I came in expecting the worst because of the reviews but to our amazement the food, price, and service were great! The "add a pie and drink" for $5 is a great deal. The food came out simultaneously within minutes. If you're expecting traditional comfort food, I would say this is a good place to stop. I would say it feels like a Denny's but a tad more homemade. To make it a 5 star I would say it needs a little more ambiance, and a little more down-home charm. I go to Perkins a lot and the food has been always really good. Sometimes they are busy and I have to wait, but it is not a fast-food place, so I expect that sometimes. Everyone has always been nice and pleasant. And my food has always been hot. read more

LeGand Cafe, was closed and OJS, was packed. Every parking spot was full. We reluctantly went to Perkins on Monday at lunch time. So I was met with an older man yelling a crossed the dining room. "What can I get you to drink young lady." As off putting as this was I told him 2 coffees and water would be fine. He gave us menus and was very loud and very boisterous! We needed some time to look at the menu since we hadn't been there since they remodeled years ago. Our server was spending a lot of time at a table that had 2 ladies with their small dogs. He seemed to forget we were there. We tried several times to get his attention to no avail. Finally, I got his attention and asked for him to take our order. He was busy and finished what he was doing. Brushing us off for several minutes. When he did come to our table he was very loud and short. Cutting us off multiple times. He then left our table before I finished asking for my 2 dressings on the side. He came back to the table with the dogs and took his sweet time petting and talking to them again. I tried to flag him down to ask for a side of Ranch to go w the side of French. He acknowledged on the go back to the kitchen. He came back in a huff and put the Ranch on the table. My Father who he assumed wrongly was my husband asked for another carafe of coffee. He acknowledged and suggested we share one cup of coffee. This was so we didn't have the added cost of $4 for 2 cups. As "He didn't mind". We were not a couple! So the idea was not at all acceptable. He brought another cup. Then, the carafe of coffee which he slammed into the table startling us with a loud noise. He seemed angry and put out. We also needed some extra napkins and more cream. He got the cream frantically from the empty table next to us. He seemed to be very animated making a big deal about our needs. We never asked him for anything in any non polite way. Although, my very good mood seemed to be shifting towards a bad mood. Telling my Father, my feelings. His reply was to not allow him to ruin my good mood. I agreed and calmed myself. We finished our meals. I asked him for a box. Then needed a small box for the cold green beans. He also brought a sack which was appreciated. I went to the bathroom while Dad, paid. I asked what he tipped and he said $0. He let his $$$ reflect the service given. I do NOT recommend this Perkins. The Manager was very uncaring and could see and hear what was going on in the dining room. Bringing this to his attention would have been pointless. read more

We were seated quickly, but had no silverware. When our waiter finally approached our table he was not paying close attention to my husband, who has a speech impediment. The waiter walked away while we were telling him our order, and went the the station to enter it directly into the computer as he loudly announced it across the restaurant. Then my husband was served his hot chocolate in a tall soft drink glass. When he plate full of pancakes arrived, he was given, 3 pots of margarine and no syrup. By the time we could flash down the waiter, the pancakes (and egg) were cold. My food was so overcooked I could barely cut it thank goodness it was covered in gravy and that softened it up enough to eat. We then tried, in vain, to get our waiter's attention for a to-go box and finally we were able to get the hostess's instead. She cashed us out, and was very personable. I think we can forget about going back to this place for a while. I neglected to mention that our waiter was giving most of this attention to another table that had a single female as a patron, or to another table that had at least one other employee seated at it. read more

We tried to get seated in the half full restaurant with 3 adults and 2 babies in car seats. Several 6 and 8 top tables were open but they weren't sure if they even wanted to seat us at all if the babies couldn't sit on a chair SMH!!!! So after 6 parties that came in after us were seated and our requests to be seated or give us a wait time were all ignored, we decided to leave and support a local Mexican restaurant where we had an amazing lunch. The absolute rudeness of the staff was a huge turn off and we will for sure not ever be returning here. Sad that some employees can ruin a restaurant's reputation so quickly. read more

Why such a low rating? It is their coffee! By far Perkins coffee is the worst in the world. This Perkins is a stones throw away from Dunkin and a McDonalds which both have great coffee. I've been there twice, first time I was being treated so I didn't really look closely at the prices. I ordered French toast it was raw inside. 2nd time I went there I had waffles it was raw inside. We had an early lunch on a Saturday. The restaurant was about half full. No wait for seating and it appeared that there was enough staff, which was nice to see. I had meatloaf that comes with mashed potatoes and gravy and a couple onion ring halves fora tasty garnish. I chose grilled asparagus for my side. My husband had the teriyaki grilled chicken with mashed potatoes, gravy , & asparagus. Both of us liked our meals. We were surprised that the asparagus was served in bite size pieces, but also happy that they were more tender than full length grilled spears typically are. They were seasoned nicely. Our server was new. Today was his first day solo after training. He did a good job and was polite and attentive. Service was a lot slower than it should have been for the number of customers and staff present. It seems the delay came from the kitchen, though. It was obvious that it wasn't our server's fault. He did apologize that it took so long for our food to be ready, which we also appreciate that he acknowledged. (It had taken about 40-45 minutes from the time we ordered) If the food would have arrived quicker, like half as long as it took this time, I would have given at least one more star. It's open 24-7, has wireless, and a place to charge my laptop. They were more than willing to accommodate my seating to keep my laptop charged, which while traveling across the country is a nice bonus. They wait staff were kind and courteous. Never offered refills on our drinks, asked for peanut butter 4 times had to stick my head in the kitchen before I finally got some. I have had so many consistently bad/slow experiences at different Perkins over the years that I stopped going to them. I decided to give this location a try after seeing online ads about their Cobb salad. I arrived at noon on a Friday and even with many folks waiting for a table, I was seated within a few minutes. My order was taken within moments, and drink arrived quickly after. It was within 20 minutes to receive the salad (and roll). If you look up what a Cobb salad is, you will see most places do not make them correctly. Often, they cover this by calling them something else, like a Southwestern Cobb or similar. The Perkins version was called a West Coast Cobb Salad which I expected might make it different, but it had all the proper basic ingredients except chives/onions and black olives. The serving size was large and it was tasty without dressing (one reason I like Cobb salads). A real Cobb is completely diced, which this one was not (though the tomato was). Perkins has one of the best I have had outside the Brown Derby (where it was invented about 90 years ago). The only place around that made a real Cobb was California-based Mimi's Cafe in Des Moines, and they have closed. I think Perkins is now my top local Cobb spot (and certainly best I have had in Marshalltown). My server, Amy, checked back with me frequently and was nice. During checkout, I was asked "how was your meal and service." Excllent. I will return the next time I crave an excellent Cobb salad. read more

I have never been to a Perkins this slow. The kitchen was behind, and to make matters worse, our waitress was completely checked-out. Good service can salvage a mediocre experience, but not so in this case. She took our orders for drinks, and by the time they came out my Coke was flat. During our 45 minute wait for food she didn't come back once to check on us. That would have been helpful, because we hadn't received silverware, which was deposited unceremoniously in a pile in the center of our table a few minutes after our food arrived. Four of us went to Perkins for breakfast this morning at 9:30am. The place wasn't very busy but noticed there seemed to be only one waitress. We didn't get waited on until 10am. Placed our orders and didn't receive the food until 11am. There were a couple other tables of people that came in after us. They were waited on, served, ate and left before we even received our food. There was another couple that never did get waited on. They ended up leaving. Waitress never checked on us to see if we needed anything while we patiently waited for our food. I ran out of a pot of hot water for my tea while waiting. Not only was service very poor, I went into the not so clean restroom and there were no paper towels in there. Management seemed to be more interested in cleaning up a couple tables than waiting on customers. Perkins used to be a good place to eat but it appears they need new management before this restaurant takes a nose dive like so many others have. We are four people that won't be back. read more

The food was mediocre. They filled the special requests of no dressing with my sister's turkey and real butter for my pancakes. But, mine was the only dish that was hot and my butter was frozen so hard it never melted. The service was abysmal. It took over an hour to get our food, my glass of tea sat empty for 30 minutes before I could get my server's attention. And, when I responded to the manager's question, "How was your meal?" truthfully, I didn't even receive an apology. We are here for three days. While Perkins is a fall back for me while I'm on the road, I will find someplace else to dine until I get home. read more

My wife and I have attempted multiple times to find a good aspect of this Perkins. Every time we have visited this establishment it has taken forever to be seated. Once we are seated it is at least 15 minutes before we are asked what we would like to drink. Then another 20 minutes for them to come back and take our order. Mind you, the restaurant is not busy at all. Then it takes the normal allowable time receive our meals. While dining, not once we're we voluntarily asked if we needed refills, we had to request them. Once our meals were gone we neatly piled our dishes and placed them on the outer edge of our table. Hoping the waitress would take them away, which she did not. She did manage to come to our table and ask if we needed anything, my wife and I looked at each other and replied no thank you. Then the fastest thing of the evening happened....she produced our bill on the spot. So needless to say we will not visit this Perkins ever again.
