We stopped for lunch on a Friday. The lunch special was $10 - - a drink, 3 ounces of onion rings and a 5 inch pizza. We decided we would just order a bigger pizza to share. We got onion rings to start and they were good, as usual. I just think 30 seconds more in the fryer would make them a little crisper and tastier. Our Canadian bacon mushroom pizza was awesome! The crust was just right. The amount of sauce was just right. The waitress was friendly and took our order at our seats. Drinks were self serve. Fabulous pizza. Thursday special free order onion rings with med or large pizza. Ordered med Chicken Ranch, Bacon, Ham. Rings came quick, crisp and light with ranch dressing. Pizza right after that, crispy crust and very, very tasty. Great service, atmosphere, and food - we'll be back. read more

While the food & service was wonderful I found out that the servers,busters etc are forced to give the owner all of their tips which besides being just wrong it's also illegal!! I guess they the staff are afraid of being fired. I will also be notifying the BBB, and labor department. It will definitely make me think twice before using a credit card for a tip again at this establishment!! read more

I love the ambiance of Gio's, it's also a nostalgic place for me (good memories). Great small town local pizza place. My favorite was the taco pizza! This seems to be a Midwest type of pizza because I usually only see it on the menu when I am in Iowa! I love that they put the taco sauce on the side so you have the option of using it or not. We also got the garlic cheese bread which was loaded with melted gooey cheese. We were on our way to Indiana from Utah. Got to the hotel and called to order a pizza. I ordered the Italian stallion. They said it will take between 30 minutes to one hour. My pizza came within that time frame. The pizza was hot and very good. I couldn't stop eating. I then received a call from Giovanni's they accidentally made the wrong pizza. They offered to deliver and make the correct pizza, but this was so good. I believe I ended up with the grinder. I refused the offer. Excellent customer service. This place is a local gem. If you're local to Newton IA and Giovanni's is something you've missed, we'll get there! And if you're a traveler, this is a not-to-be missed spot. You can't go wrong with it. Giovanni's pizza is generally a thinner-crust pizza but not "crackery" or limp - it has enough thickness to give it some chew but not so thick as to be bready. It has a nice crust rim on it as well. Everything is house made except for the obvious prepared meats like Canadian Bacon and pepperoni. The owner, Bob, grinds and seasons his own Italian sausage and "American" sausage (which is basically a mild Italian sausage). He makes his sauce from scratch too. And everything else is fresh. His onion rings re hand cut and hand battered. He makes dough fresh every day and it is aged/fermented at least overnight to make sure it is perfect for pizza. Most of the dishes are all house made with the same care for quality. All of this makes a huge difference in the quality. I am from Chicago and I can say this pizza would hold its own and beat any pizza from Chicago of the same type. The location is easy to get to right on the "main drag" on the east end of Newton. The pricing is, honestly, absurdly inexpensive. I always tip heavy here as the ticket is always surprisingly less than I expect. The location is tidy and always clean - it's a simple pizza joint - it won't win awards for design. You won't care once you dive into the pizza. I strongly recommend and endorse this restaurant. It was super busy. Took 20 minutes after seating to see server. The food was nowhere near as good as my past experience. We will be back for another try hoping this was a fluke. The parking is terrible. We had to park in a equipment leasing lot, hoping not to get towed. I know these guys can do better. Giovanni's is my favorite pizza place in Newton! It's a great place for a casual dinner during the week. Being newer to Newton, I've heard the great history of this place from friends and co-workers. While it might not be inviting on the outside (although improvements have been made) the inside has had some nice work done to improve the dining experience. The food is a little expensive, but it's not a chain restaurant and the food is worth it. There are usually great deals during the week nights and they even have some great lunch specials. I love their taco pizza - it reminds me of taco pizza from back home in Minnesota! The staff and management are always friendly and service is prompt. read more

I am traveling on business from the Twin Cities and I decided to give the local pizza a try. And am I glad I did. On Thursday's, their onion rings are half price so I ordered a half portion. They brought me what appeared to be a full order and they were out of this world. What a great surprise! This place isn't much to look at from the street but inside is clean and comfortable. The server was friendly and attentive and Curtis the manager was happy to walk the dining room to see how his regulars and the stranger liked his pizza. The pizza is very good and the crust tasted like the dough was made right in the kitchen and according to Curtis, it is. As an added bonus, the restaurant has an affiliation with a local farm and wants to be transitioning to organic and plans to offer a gluten free crust in the near future .
