Do I expect too much when I order Mexican food in Iowa…read more.. I guess coming from Los Angeles my expectations run very high when I get Mexican food. Now I know we were smack in the middle of Iowa, and ingredients can be hard to get, I get it. Overall our food wasn't exactly what I would call great, it was tasty and cooked well but the flavors were just not there. Maybe they adjusted their recipes for the local plain Iowa diet, but this is not what I would stop for if i ever run through Iowa again. Prices were good and the service was o.k, it was just the food was so plain and lacking of flavor that I honestly could not give them more than 3 stars, but I'll let you decide for yourself, Aloha

It was busy but not so much that we didn't get sat right away. Our server was also busy so someone else took our drink order - and then gave us menus. We ended up ordering the meatballs, a salad, and a classic pie, and walked out also with a cool vintage looking Pagliai's tee! The meatballs were large, came with two, and really flavorful. The sauce was classic tomato but not basic, you could taste the aromatics and that was so good. Basic salad but really delicious runny ranch to go with it, which I loved. I dipped the crust from my pizza in it and it was just so good! For the pie we split it in half - half with meats and the other half with special. The crust was thin and also seasoned nicely and couldn't say enough about how delicious the cheese was. It was so gooey and thick - it made the pizza so incredibly good. Besides our server taking us on due to the prior one being too busy, the vibes inside were chill and casual, music was good and the atmosphere was pleasant. Everyone behind the pizza counter had smiles and acknowledged you. Was a real delight. Everywhere in Grinnell folks rave about Pagliai's and we understand why. We'll definitely have to come back!

The cheese curds were just okay, nothing that really stood out. I also ordered fries with cheese and gravy, basically going for the Chicago-style disco fries I'm used to back home. The gravy ended up being mushroom-based, which unfortunately wasn't for me since I'm not a mushroom person. That one was more of a personal preference issue than anything else. Overall, it wasn't a bad meal, but nothing really blew me away. The chicken wrap was solid, while the cheese curds and fries were just okay for me. Still worth trying if you're in the area, but I probably wouldn't go out of my way for it. 3/5.

The young people working didn't know about my order at first, then said it was not ready and they would make it in the next 10 minutes. Pleasant apology for being "behind". The two people working were loud and not appealing as I waited for my order. I waited inside and the food was ready in 10 to 12 minutes....not bad. The check out was very unfriendly, not pleasant and did not ask for my Casey's Reward. I asked how she was and was greeted with a sullen, "Alright".
