We were 2 couples. Early Saturday afternoon we made reservations for 6:30pm. We arrived about 6:20pm and we were seated right away in one of their booths. The decor is pretty low rate. The whole restaurant desperately needs an update. The restrooms are only for one person at a time. This causes some major lines. But the service and food quality makes up for all of those issues. Our server was on the ball and came around frequently. We all ordered the prime rib. This is the ONLY place I will order prime rib. Everywhere else it's been flavorless, pure fat or tough. It's been none of that here. The salad is nothing special, just iceberg lettuce, a little cheese and a few Fritos. But it was pretty good, anyway. The blue cheese dressing was excellent, with some nice chunks of cheese. The baked potato was very good, nice & fluffy. It was done all the way through. So many time they're hard in the middle, but not these! We've been here several times before and we'll be back again! read more

I've never been able to stay here. My husband has service-related hearing loss. We walked in and he turned right around due to the extreme noise. Places with all hard floors, walls and furniture in addition to clattering dishes and crowds make this an unpleasant atmosphere for people with hearing issues. read more

I'll start with the very off-putting part: your sign on the door telling me a mask was required if not vaccinated. I still sat and ate in your establishment without either, now what? You don't get to make that decision for myself or anyone else. Now that we got past that awkwardness. The interior/dining area was a bit different/off the wall. The prime rib definitely made up for it, the meal was a definite win. The food was excellent and we had good service despite it being pretty busy. My only other minor complaint was there was only one stall in the women's bathroom. It would greatly help if there was more than one in each women's and men's restrooms. Yum! Our first time there! The guys prime rib were 5 Star. Perfectly cooked and a nice portion! Friends broasted chicken with seafood pasta salad was delicious. My broasted chicken breast was moist and big. I had the 1/2 seafood salad and it was great!! The ice tea was brewed and only $1! Don't forget dessert! $2 for dirt cake and $3 for ice cream pie! Service is top notch! We had Lisa as a waitress and she was amazing. We had about an hour drive here and I will do it again. I'm not a prime rib person nor a steak person but I've heard how good the prime rib is so I wanted to try it. It was sooooo delicious! My husband and friend got the ribeye and her husband got the Broasted Iowa Chop! We all rate it a 10 out of 10! The specialty pasta was seafood pasta salad and it was DELICIOUS! I came here the other evening with family for the prime rib special. My grandma is a regular and knows all of the staff by name. She raved about the prime rib and the charm of this local joint. Apparently, That Place is The Place to be on a Friday evening. We had reservations, but still struggled to find a parking spot. The restaurant is exactly what you would expect to find in small town Iowa -- antiques scattered around, friendly staff who knows their customers by name and a simple menu. I ordered the 8oz Prime Rib with fries and the baked potato soup. Everything was delicious and I was pleasantly surprised by how tender an 8oz prime rib could be. Very disappointed, way overpriced, my sister ordered 4 pieces of the fish and got 4 frozen Vande Camp breaded fillets for 16.95, I ordered 2 pork chops and got 2 thin way overcooked tough, dry chops for 16.95. I ordered hashbrowns with it and got one square toaster hashbrown like you can buy in the Walmart freezer section. The dinner salad was lettuce, some shredded cheese and 5 fritos on top, no tomato, no carrots, no other vegetables. If you want extra tartar for your frozen fish fillets or extra dressing for your salad it was 30 cents more for a small plastic cup. Are you kidding me? After driving past that place from years prompted us to stop after the UNI football game victory. We made a reservation early in the morning but our name wasn't written down when we got there. They quickly accommodated us and took us to a crowded booth. Even though this place has been open since 1971, it's overdue for a major overhaul. Nostalgia only goes so far and it's time to take a good hard look at inefficient layout, gaudy decorations, uncomfortable seating and the entry way. Think about it, if Robert Irvine walked in, he would gut the place! It's time to remove the clutter, booths, folding tables, and ugly bar. All of this overshadows the great food and service that place is known for. Just think of the breath of fresh air you'd bring to the community as the showcase restaurant in the area. While in Marshalltown on business That Place was one of the dinner stops. It seemed to be forever out of town, about 25 minutes or so, and quite creepy in the dark. Eventually I saw a sign with a kangaroo on it and I had arrived at That Place. Having had steak a couple nights before at Rubes, I opted for the broasted Iowa chop... The waitress described it as a more "healthy" fried thick cut pork chop. I chose the side salad, and baked potato. The side salad was lame iceberg which I've discovered is pretty much the lettuce you get in Iowa. Nothing amazing, fritos instead of croutons was an interesting touch. Baked potato was good, but doesn't come with cheese or bacon, just sour cream and butter. The pork chop was moist and tasty, not amazing or particularly memorable. The Texas toast wasn't good. Tasted weird to me. As if I hadn't had enough food I did order the dirt cake... It was good, very sweet, I only made it through half. Our waitress was a sweet lady, and took care of are large group with ease, she refilled my ice tea like 5 times and I never had to ask!!! The place was kinda old n dumpy but on closer inspection very clean... The old bathroom was spotless! Always a good thing in my book. So final thoughts, I guess you should stop by if you're in the area but really the star restaurant in the area is totally Rubes. read more

We eat here about once a month and I would place their prime rib at the top of any I've ever had. Completely amazing and worth every nickel. They also have the best, most delicious seafood salad. It's only offered on the weekend (as is the prime rib). Worth a drive from anywhere in Iowa. My only negative review, and the reason I can't give them a five star rating, is because they have the worst wine selection of all of the steakhouse's I've ever eaten. While in Marshalltown on business a coworker talked us in to going here. I was doubtful at first, even after reading some good reviews. It is way out there though, about 15 minutes north of Marshalltown. And it isn't much to look at. The outside resembles an old storage building or something. But looks can be deceiving. The interior is a mix of old skating rink seats and worn out booths, to walls covered in business cards from as far back as the 1970s, to a bar that looks like it dropped out of a saloon. The surfboard on the ceiling is crazy since we are roughly 10,000 miles away from an ocean (seems that far anyway). But the food. Wow. We went on a Tuesday night and had to make reservations. Even though this place is in the middle of nowhere, they are famous for the Tuesday night rib special and they have a right to be. The place was packed. The ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender. I had a baked potato and a goofy little side salad upon which they used corn chips instead of croutons. A slice of Texas toast and a couple of frosty mugs of beer so cold there were ice crystals on top and I thought I had indeed found heaven in Iowa and baseball had nothing to do with it. My coworkers tried the fried walleye and a steak. The fish looked perfectly golden brown and I may have to try it next time. My friend's steak was precisely medium rare as ordered. There aren't a lot of choices in and around Marshalltown but if you are ever here, put this one on the top of your list. Just be sure it is on a Tuesday and you have reservations. read more

First, I want to clarify that we have not been back here since Bernie & Collen sold the restaurant. It was a GREAT place to take guests from out of town or special events. I called the restaurant @ 5:30 pm and talked to a gentleman about several things. Do you accept reservations, YES. Do you still have RIB night on Tuesdays, YES. Do you accept credit cards, YES. Made a reservation for 7:15 pm since we live in Grinnell & Conrad is 50 miles away. Arrived on time and was greeted by a friendly person at the bar and then seated at a table with split vinyl on one of the seats next to another table of 4 people when plenty of tables were available that time of night. We were greeted by a friendly elderly waitress who took our order for drinks and a combination platter. Said she would be back in a minute to take our order. When she came back she informed our group they were out of RIBS, out of RIBS on RIB NIGHT when your open for less than 4 hours a day, SERIOUSLY! I ordered the 8 ounce ground sirloin, the rest of them ordered the 4 piece broasted chicken. The combination platter came, EXCELLENT! Then the salads came with FRITOS on top? We got our meals and the food was good but nothing special with dried out texas toast. Then to our suprise SENATOR CHUCK GRASSLEY (R) came in with two other people. As we were getting ready to leave guess what their table was served? RIBS!!!! If your going to tell some of your patrons there are NO RIBS don't serve anyone else after that! If you can reserve RIB dinners we should have been told that since our reservation was for 7:15 pm and I specifically asked if it was RIB night. Wouldn't you agree! Anyway, what was supposed to be a GREAT birthday celebration night of RIBS turned out to to be a 100 mile trip for chicken & ground sirloin we could have found in Grinnell or surrounding commuties. We weren't even offered any of their famous desserts! Thank goodness for the DQ in Marshalltown. Will we be back, NO! Will we recommed THAT PLACE, NO! We have always enjoyed the food and the service at That Place but our last visit was marred by the fact that someone added a 20% tip to our receipt after I signed it. I got change when I paid the bill and left a cash tip of more than 20% on the table. I checked my bank account the next day and found the charge, I called the restaurant and was told they found their copy and it was signed and showed the tip written in. I explained that I didn't add the tip as I had left cash and was told this has happened before and I should tell them next time not to write anything on the slip! Beware if you use a credit or debt card don't leave the tip line blank. This was so unfortunate because the server was excellent and I thought we had left a nice 22% tip only find they decided a 42% tip was in order. Good food, good service.. .honesty ??? I've heard about THAT PLACE from a variety of people, so out of curiosity, a need to get out of the house and also to take advantage of our IPTV member card, we drove north of Marshalltown to a place literally in the middle of nowhere in the crossroads of cornfields and a nearby town of Conrad. Believe it or not, you do need a reservation to dine here (at least for a Friday or Saturday night). It's very popular in the area and I can see why. It's a no frills restaurant that serves a great steak. The interior is a very curious mix of nostalgia over the years, graffiti and business cards. My husband ordered the large prime rib and I had steak and shrimp. Both were seasoned and cooked to perfection. The shrimp were few, but large and hand breaded. As others have mentioned, the sides are nothing exciting, but I wasn't expecting in the way of artistic dining. The fritos were a fun touch replacing the standard crouton. It was worth the long drive and word of mouth. We don't usually travel up to that area, but would most likely make a point of visiting here once a year due to the distance from our home. And you 100% need to indulge in one of their amazing desserts: black dirt cake, prize winning pie or grasshopper pie. Best Ribeye and best prime rib around. It may be a bit out of the way for many people, but it's worth the drive. Very fare prices. A "10 oz ribeye" (which was thick and DEFINITELY larger than 10oz, and cooked to perfection!) with sides and the best root beer you'll find all for $20. I've eaten here many times and they are consistent. Friendly staff too. BTW, the environment is completely different from, but the steaks are every single bit as good as, the highly acclaimed Rube's... at a WAY better price. read more

Nothing fancy, just great food and good people...and they keep one of my favorite beers on tap (I like to think they do this just for me, but deep down, I know it's just a coincidence). Whenever I'm in Iowa...I HAVE to eat here. When I took my wife here for the first time, I was telling her all about the place (and how we always make reservations). We pulled into the parking lot and she said "you need a reservation for THIS place?!" When we walked inside, she understood. That Place was packed...like (almost) always. Meh! Went on a Thursday with reservation at 6:30, recommend reservation. Linda was our server - personable, attentive, pleasant and not over intruding. Wife had filet and I had broasted chicken. Filet flavor was ok, but these are 3/4 inch steaks and they're gonna get overdone pretty easily. I had a view of the kitchen and the kid leaning on the grill press got any juices out of them pretty good. Chicken was flavorful and crispy. Wing was cooked fine. Other three pieces, while not uncooked could have cooked longer. I like it when my leg bone pulls out clean of the leg meat - thigh, leg and breast were not to that stage. Nothing was bad, but Conrad ain't exactly next door and I'm not sure I would go out of my way to eat there again. It's certainly not as good as it was when we were here in 2008...... read more

Had heard great things about this restaurant. Reservations in place and arrived on time. It was an OK atmosphere and if you are from rural communities you come across places like this every so often. It was just fine. Hurriedly seated and menues handed out. I was with another couple from the area. That couple made a simple request as to the appetizer and things quickly deteriorated. The waitress acted insulted, rolled her eyes and provided minimally acceptable service from that time on. I think our bill for four was close to $120. I later was told this was the owners daughter. She needs to find a new line of work, customer service is certainly not her calling. Food was pretty darn good, service, not so much. read more
