We were in Nevada for my boy's basketball tournament. We had time to kill and needed lunch, so we stopped into this place not sure what to expect. This place is a bit of a dive. And I don't say that as a bad thing. It's an old school small town bar, and place for people to gather and eat pretty reasonably priced pizza. The building is old and not real attractive, but don't let that fool you. I don't know anything about this place, but I'd guess it's a family run joint. The bar tender was also our server....it was a quiet day there. She was quite pleasant and really did a good job. She may have been part of the owning family. The food was very reasonably priced and the pizza was surprisingly good. We had a thin crust pizza. The crust was very good. The fried pickles were pretty good too, although they were served in one of those red plastic baskets without any paper lining. I was a little surprised by that and hoped the basket was cleaned, but I was so hungry I actually didn't care. It tasted good. The beer was good and cold and pretty cheap too. I debated on giving this place 3 stars. My gut said to go with 4. If you can appreciate an old school pizza joint, that looks like it's held a couple of small town wedding receptions or parties in the back room, then you'll know why I gave it 4 stars. Not all people will love this place, but it sure hit the spot and helped us kill some time and drink a few cool ones before we had to move on. read more

BEST FRIED CHICKEN!!! I'm from Houston Texas. Frequent in Nevada Iowa. It took me 3 yrs here looking for the best fried chicken... totally unaware that this pizza hole-in-the-wall spot has the super secret great tasting fried chicken in the entire Iowa!!! Chicken meat is really moist and really tasty & crunchy on the outside! OMG I'm super hooked! Love it love it love it! Slurps slurps. Yummmyyyy to my tummmyyyy! Ahhhhh... They're in the middle of a remodeling project, but the the pizza was every bit as good as last time we stopped in. This time we ate 1 there & ordered 1 to go for my wife's sister. They had great pizza when back in Ames years ago. While the ambiance is not great yet, the pizza is great. Service was good & the prices were very reasonable. The beer selection was satisfactory & cold. We live in Norwalk, so don't get that far too often, but will definitely go again. read more

First of all they've moved downtown to 1218 6th Street. Not hard to find. If heading East turn left at the stop light and it's on your left in the first block. I was a customer of the original Georges in Fairfield Iowa in the 60's. When I moved to Ames the old George's in Nevada was owned by a guy who worked at the original and used the same recipes. These new owners kept most of the recipes but unfortunately changed the quality of the cheese which brought the over all taste down considerably. Can't mess with a good recipe and not pay the price. As a result I only buy from here around once a year. Used to go about once a month. I'm ordering today and if it's back to better I'll change my rating. read more

Wow this place was terrible. We are from out of town and walked into the pizza side of the business and approached the counter. The young girl behind the counter ask us our name for pickup. We said "No we want to order a pizza." She told us to go over to the bar and she'd be over in a minute to get your order. She never came over... we were shocked because all of the empty tables were full of dirty dishes. So we walked back over to the "to go" and asked to place an order to go. We asked if we could order the George's special but we wanted to substitute the green peppers for green olives and the guy making the pizza said "We don't make substitutions that would be a custom order. So I proceeded to place an order. I told her I would just wait over on the bar side until my order was ready. She asked for a name and I said Ron...I paid for the order and we walked back to the bar side. No tables were cleaned yet so we pushed back from a dirty table and just sat back away from the table. Another couple came in and we offered the a place at the other end of our table. After about 10-15 the bartender came over to take their order but still did not wipe off the table or cleaned the table of the pizza pan and glasses sitting in front of them. He brought them a drink and about 10-15 minutes later he brought their appetizer to them. They were not offered any silverware or even places. They had to share one basket for the two of them. Our pizza still did not arrive another 10-15 minutes later my husband walked over to check on our pizza. They said what's your name?? He said Ron. Oh yeah it's been ready. He complained. What a joke they never apologized, offer to make us a new one or even discount it for their mistake... Before we left I went to the restroom. Their was a big sign that said ALL Employees must was their hands before returning to work...needless to say there wasn't any soap.. We will NOT BE BACK!! This was a diappointment!! read more

The menus are so old the prices say they're sooo much lower than they actually are. We understand that inflation is high and prices are changing but for my buffalo Alfredo pasta it was supposed to be $8 and I was charged $12 (a 50% price increase!) They charged a base rate of $9 for just the alfredo, plus an additional $2 for chicken and an extra dollar for the buffalo sauce. Extremely ridiculous, they didn't even bother to warn of the price changes. If we were warned we would've understood. The tenderloin was subpar and also several dollars than marked on the menu. Soda cost over double the price on the menu. Would not recommend. Several things on the menu weren't available anymore. read more

The pizza here used to be good years ago. Since they moved to the current location, it has suffered. We order veggie pizza and very few toppings. Mushrooms are canned and not fresh. I even messaged through FB about sub par pizza and got no response. No ambiance to the place either. read more

I grew up in Nevada and only had George's a few times. We grew up with Pizza Hut and Breadeaux in our town and George's wasn't convenient. Plus, at the time, we never knew when it was open because they kept weird hours. We recently started ordering from them again and we have been missing out for all of that time. George's serves up some good pizza. The family that owns it is friendly and the ingredients and dough are fresh. I have been ordering now on a semi-regular basis and pleased with the product. There are a few small drawbacks, but nothing that would stop me from eating there. To my knowledge, George's doesn't have a posted menu or a price list anywhere that I know of unless there is one inside of the restaurant. I don't know because we order over the phone rather than going in and picking it up. Prices are good compared to most in town. If you get pizza there they have very few places to eat it at the restaurant. Only a few booths in the back and nothing else. None of those things are that important to me and most others because they have been in business for at least thirty years and still kicking. read more

I am originally from Nevada and grew up on George's pizza since the mid 70's and always loved it and wanted my fiancee to try the pizza. We visited from out of town on Jan 8th and liked the pizza and cold beer. However, we were absolutely shocked when we inquired about being charged more for our pizza than what the menu stated, and the staff's response was the owner has not gotten around to changing the prices on the menu. This is either an example of false advertising OR the wait staff running a scam by hiking up the prices. Either way this is unacceptable and we will be making all of our family and friends who live in Nevada and Ames fully aware and advise them not give George's any of their business, unless they want to get ripped off. read more

If you're looking for a pizza that is a different from all the chain restaurants give this place a try. I highly recommend the breasted chicken and deep fat friend chicken gizzards also with your pizza. Ask for extra cheese that's the only draw back for me. I like my cheese. read more

Since there weren't any pictures of the actual pizza, I wanted to add one for George's. The crust is on the thinner side, but it is not at all a crispy crust, it is more of a floppy crust. Not a bad thing, just a different style. I have only ordered from them once, so after future visits if I get a different result then I will update the review to reflect that. The pizza was very good, only slightly oily, I thought from looking at it that it was going to be messier. The sausage was good. Not the best pizza that I have ever had, but there is absolutely nothing to complain about with their pizza. read more
