My family and I went to Starbucks Drive-In. The service was great, the food was delicious. The homemade tenderloins were excellent. The cheese curds, and onion rings were good. Other food items in our group were fried mushrooms, grilled chicken sandwich and a double bacon cheeseburger. No complaints. Hadn't been there in years but will be back. Iowa lays claim to a very unusual form of a hamburger where the ground beef is served "loose" without being formed in to patties. It's the equivalent of a sloppy joe, without the sauce and it's scooped between buns and dressed in the traditional manner. To my knowledge you'll find no other as satisfying for the price than here at Starbucks. I've tried them at the big loose meat chain and at many mom and pop places, but this is the best in flavor and proportion. It's a very large sandwich, and they have the best seasoned beef that I have found in this style of sandwich in their jumbo beef burgers. Their beef burger really takes top billing here. They have a wide selection of ice-cream treats and deep fried goodies as well. They excel at their niche operation. This is not a fancy place. It's simple in concept and decor. This place is AWESOME!!! We would go here in elementary, Junior High and High School. After our track meets at Nevada we would go over to Starbucks to get a Cyclone (Blizzard). They have the best pork tenderloins and great maid rites. If I remember correctly they have great pizza burgers too. If you're in central Iowa and looking for some good food at a hole-in-the-wall place Starbucks is your place. Four of us got two pork tenderloin's (they're huge so my mom and I shared), one maid rite, one order of cheese balls and one order of chicken gizzards for $21. But it does have that old school, only open in summer, ice cream shack feel. It's nostalgic and all that comes with that. It's not as glitzy as a modern Dairy Queen but it's not as clean either. The summer we moved here, my husband mentioned as a kid they rarely ate out. In fact he could only remember going to Starbuck's (this Starbucks, not coffee Starbuck's) a few times as a kid. At that time we had only lived in Nevada one week but I was obscenely pregnant and had already outstripped his childhood record of times eating there... Here's the thing. The soft serve sherbet is out of this world and one of a kind. The ice cream and fries are reasonably priced. The rest of it is just ok. The food is frozen/fry vat stuff and can run a little high with large order. The building lacks updating and gets a little grungy toward the end of the day. The lines are ridiculous sometimes. They charge extra for a credit card, which they never even took for years. The service is pleasant enough but rarely friendly. Those ladies are busy and they can't talk because it's loud in there. Call in your order for pickup, and stick to ice cream unless you're starved. It's just fast food. The sherbet is the best. If they have the peach-black raspberry twist, thank heaven and kiss your babies. You're having a very good summer week. read more

The jumbo beefburger is huge. A Maid-Rite on steroids. Comes with your choice of mustard, ketchup, pickle and onion. On this visit, the jumbo, with skinny fries and a drink, was the special of the day. Under six dollars! What a bargain. My husband, who grew up in Iowa, has forced me to eat at Maid-Rite, B-Bops and Starbuck's, in consecutive days (he misses this style of sandwich). Of the three, I can definitely say that Starbuck's was my favorite. I understand that ownership has recently changed, with the reins being turned over to a long time employee. The aforementioned husband, a long time customer, tells me nothing material has been altered. Well, maybe a little paint. Certainly nothing at all negative. Only positive. What is that now? Three owners in sixty years of business? The menu is surprisingly diverse. I plan to return to sample some of ice cream in the near future. I may get strung up in my hometown for saying this, but I think Starbuck's (the true Starbuck's - not the stupid coffee chain) is just alright. They close for the winter and every season we all look forward to our return to this local eatery in March. Things have not changed here for many years and I think that's part of the reason that things seem average. The food is good but they don't have any specific item they make that I haven't had elsewhere. Take their breaded pork tenderloin, for example. Compared with other tenderloins, this one is dry, flat and somewhat bland unless you cover it in mustard and ketchup. It's big, but they pound the loin so thin that it dries out. A favorite of many is the beef burger, which again, is good, but not as good as the likes of a place like Taylor's in Marshalltown. Does that mean I'd drive to another town to eat it? Of course not. Sure, the food is alright here, but don't expect to be blown away by it. Their sherbet, on the other hand, is as good as I've had to date. They typically have several flavors available and occasionally have freezer packs available to take home. Their ice cream creations are good, including the "cyclone" which is similar to DQ's Blizzard. They also serve up a mean Slushie. The building itself seems to have been somewhat neglected and needs to be repaired. One of the AC units is falling out if the window, the place needs a coat of paint and they really could use more places to sit. I don't remember whether they have a restroom available to the public or not. The service could be better, but it's not terrible. Overall, Starbuck's is a good place to grab some food, but don't expect to be blown away by their food. Well, except the sherbet - it's a thing of beauty. If you can look past the crowded dining get area, the noise and the slightly under-kempt building, you'll probably enjoy your visit. read more

Everyone in the area looks forward to this place reopening every spring (they close for the winter). They do serve good food, and good ice cream treats, I just wish it wasn't so small (the building and parking) and that it wasn't all kids with attitudes working there. Yes I realize they are relatives and friends of relatives, but honestly, sometimes I would get frustrated when my order took forever or was wrong. I know a couple of the Starbucks personally, and they are really nice folks, and they run a very popular establishment, but they could improve upon it by hiring some better counter and kitchen staff when they aren't there to run it. Again, it's great food and great summer time treats, but the employee and wait time and order correctness issues that cause me to only give them 3 stars. I hadn't had a Starbuck's pork tenderloin in a year or so and was really glad they were still open, as they close in the winter. However, they had two options for the sandwich, and none of the workers knew which one was the large thin and crispy version. I chose the one they suggested, the pork fritter, but it was a disappointment. Maybe they don't have the dinner plate sized pork tenderloin that is flattened and breaded in a machine.
