    Handpies

This review will cover several items at this Perkins. Not all were consumed at one sitting. I'll start with the food I'm eating tonight-the turkey meal, which includes turkey slices, stuffing, cranberry sauce, turkey gravy and two sides of your choice. The turkey was juicy and had good taste. I got mashed potatoes and corn with my meal. The mashed potatoes were good. The stuffing was typical restaurant type, perfectly hydrated(not too dry). The corn had very little taste, but looks bright yellow and pretty(!). All in all, it was a good hearty meal that I would enjoy eating again. As I tell most folks in my reviews, sign up for emails and get the apps. of the places you like to dine at. Perkins has a couple good deals that come via emails. Also, be sure to clock in with your phone number at the counter. Last week, I had the three "handpies" and they were good. There could have been more blueberries in the blueberry one, but it was ok. The two breakfast ones, one with bacon and the other with polish sausage, were also good. Overall, these ranged about a 5-7 on a 10 scale. The previous order I had gotten was the $5 for 5 meal. This week, that will cost an extra $0.50 per egg, due to scarcity of eggs and high prices(I thought this dude was supposed to reduce the prices on day 1-or that's what he PROMISED) anyway, this order had 1 egg, over easy, 2 slices bacon and 2 pancakes and it was hot, fresh and I enjoyed it very much. I've taken all my meals to go, but the restaurant is clean, staff is friendly and there's such a wide variety of food here that you can't really get a bad meal. Lot parking. Prices not much higher than fast food, yet it's a sit down place. MarcyDiner'sTantrumScale 5/5- NoScreamingKids. CyHawkApproved and loved. I'll post a pic of the handpies.

The server was okay, checked up on us and made sure that everything was okay. And the food was also okay, I ordered the eggs avocado Benedict (that comes with fruit) and I found 3 small black hairs in my fruit. Other then that overall everything was good. Edited: Slow service

    NEW Potato Pancake Platter

Your typical breakfast diner food! One thing that really intrigued me on their menu is the potato pancake platter! Three potato pancakes with two eggs, fruit or bacon, and a small side of apple sauce. This will have you full in no time! I definitely recommend this dish. The portions were very filling. I could hardly finish all of my food. The customer service was very friendly and we got our food fairly quickly too.

What exactly is the point of going to Perkins if they are not open 24 hours? We went there at 9:50pm, the manager or the person there just told us we were their last table and was super rude to only us although 2 other parties walked in with us. Why did we walk in at 10pm? Because their website says they are open till 12 am. So does google. The rice was undercooked, the tilapia was without any seasoning. The only thing that was good was the apple pie. Come on, it's tilapia. How do you not season it is beyond me. It also seems like they are understaffed. There is only one person in charge of an entire room with many tables.

My friend said it best "I'm not overwhelmed but I'm not underwhelmed!" Good pancakes, eggs that always confuse me, and PIE!! I'd say it's equivalent with all the other Perkins I've gone to. But I keep coming back. I convince myself it's cheaper than other places but it's probably about the same. I like coming here late at night they have some specials that start at 9 but occasionally I'll crave it in the mornings. It's like a once every few months place or a great place to easily get a big group!

    Hearty Man's Combo

Good value for money. The food was neither awesome nor poor, it was okay. However, my daughter and I enjoyed splitting our meal. We ordered the HEARTY MAN'S COMBO* Two eggs, smoked sausage, two Applewood smoked bacon strips and two sausage links with choice of hash browns, breakfast potatoes, tots or fruit and choice of three buttermilk pancakes, Mammoth Muffin®, buttered toast or two biscuits. We got the buttermilk pancakes. The eggs were fine. We enjoyed the smoked sausage. The bacon was okay. We liked the link sausage. Tots were perfectly crispy outside and soft on the inside. The pancakes satisfied our sweet tooth. Breakfast was pleasant and nice for the wallet.

    Here with family traveling through.

Desperately poor service. Hostess avoided us for at least 5 minutes. Looks like it's Chick-filet next time.

Perkins serves snacks from 9pm until 6am the next morning.

Perkins is one of the few restaurants open 24-hours and the Perkins in Ames, Iowa is one of the best Perkin's restaurants in the country, in my opinion. It's especially nice in a college town where students can go to eat and study late at night without bothering roommates (or vice versa). Perkins offers real food and is famous for their breakfast menu. They have a special late-night snack menu from 9 pm until 6 am. They offer pies, cookies, muffins, and other desserts to "take home." Perkins has a special "Gluten Sensitivities" menu as well. I especially like the slogan on the back of their shirts that says "Kindness Served Daily" because the servers seem to exemplify it. Two eggs, two bacon strips, hash browns and two toasts, and a coke cost $12.50, so about $15.00 with tax and tip. That seems a bit high but kind, quick service makes up for it.

Pork Belly app: thick cut pork belly in lettuce cups, topped with sweet thai glaze, pickled carrots, onions, celery, mint, thai basil, cilantro, scallions and crushed peanuts. A tad sweet for me but overall this was a great app. Slice of Sourdough: delish. Chicken Japchae: since my mom has celiac disease, we were very excited to see this on their menu - dining out with her can be a challenge. Especially at a place specializing in breads! The only unfortunate part about this dish is (I think) they forgot they already salted the chicken and salted it again...and then again. I'm not one to say something is too salty, I love my sodium but this was mouth-puckering salty. Inedible, actually, but the noodle dish itself was SO GOOD that she set the chicken aside and ate the entree. NY Strip Steak: perfectly med-rare, served with a garlic-rosemary potato pavé (like a potato casserole of sorts), roasted broccolini and a house steak sauce that was similar to a demi glaze. Not a bite left - no leftovers with this one. I ate the whole dang thing. Myself. And I have zero regrets. Crème Brûlée: I also couldn't leave without ordering a crème brûlée because there are some really bad ones out there. This did not disappoint. I also took home a Dubai Chocolate tort, Raspberry Crumble and a Flourless Chocolate cake. ZERO regrets but if you love Dubai chocolate then you know there are some discusting renditions of this in the market. However, the Dubai chocolate tort at Provisions Lot F is . I can't even describe how delicious this was and is worth the drive to Ames just for this dessert. If you're north of DSM for a game or whatever, I highly recommend Provisions! I'm already scheming a way to get back there...soon!

Disappointed to say the least, I came in the back door not realized there was a correct door and was rudely cut off by other patrons at the front desk. I had to wait several minutes to be waited on and the place had plenty of spots. Maybe because I was a party of 1... they didn't seem to care. After I shared what drink I wanted, I learned they were out... fine no problem. I asked about the Thai specials, the waitress was clueless. I had to ask for the restaurant week menu and ask about the specials. She said they looked good but couldn't describe them and hasn't tasted them. I got the salad on special, but get this... they were out of the main restaurant week special... such a let down. The ambiance was mixed, one corner was a cute date night the other corner was crying children. All dimly lit and outdated decor. The whole experience was off, I ended up leaving after my one drink and salad. I hope to give this place a second chance sometime but hope they aren't out of dishes and I can get a trained server. Maybe another night for sure!
