I know the pictures that I took may not do them justice, but I can assure you, the sandwiches are always amazing. The quality and quantity of the ingredients on the sandwiches is great each time. All of the produce is fresh and has a nice crunch to it, and the meat has never seemed off in any way. Also, the bread that they use is really good in terms of being soft, but not mushy, and it doesn't overpower the inside of the sandwich ingredients. We got a side salad from them as well, and it was quite delicious. Service: Each time we go in, we are greeted politely, and we are able to get our order pretty quickly. There's never really a wait time, and the staff is always working really hard to ensure that everybody is served in a timely fashion. Ambiance: Inside is always kept very clean, and it is decently large. It's definitely good for medium-sized groups or a one-on-one dine-in experience. It also always smells amazing! Huge difference! Get the app-they have some good deals. This place is usually just a bit more expensive than other sub places. I had a coupon, so today got a sandwich, the loaded potato soup and some garlic bread to dunk into the soup. The steak with carmelized onions was ok. This is the first time I've gotten potato soup that was anything but loaded. There are potato chunks, some bacon and the taste of cheese in it and it's thick. After getting this soup maybe 5+ times over the years, this is the first time I've actually gotten the "loaded" part and it's really good. I think it depends on the workers. Mix it up and scoop from the bottom. My previous entries about this soup essentially said "where's the loaded part?" Staff was very friendly. Place was clean. And today, I'm glad I got the soup. read more

I worked with the manager James, who had great customer service throughout our whole process of putting our catering order together. What a nice person and was very good about getting back me when I had questions. We had a large order catered and the attention to detail and the quality of the food was excellent! His staff had our order ready early and were helpful getting us loaded and in our way. This is the third year in a row I have used them for our retreat and will use Firehouses Subs again next year. I was driving back from Iowa City a few days ago during the early evening. I had gone down to the University of Iowa to teach a class and at a 2.5 hour drive each way, it was already a long day. And after dining out with Dad and others during the previous week, I didn't feel like a sit down meal. That decision was also helped by the fact that some of the restaurants I wanted to try were closed on Monday. The more convenient chain sandwich shop choices were Subway, Jimmy Johns, and Firehouse. Although there's drive in service, I parked the car and walked in. Service was helpful enough among a wide array of confusing choices. I took the recommendation of the Turkey Bacon Ranch sandwich (Medium - 8" and came out quickly) and later dined on it at the Hotel with an Iowa craft beer from the fridge, and in front of Part 5 of the Blind Auditions on the Voice. It doesn't get any more exciting than this just outside the Iowa State campus. The sandwich was good enough, albeit a bit messy. But my experience wasn't really anything to write home about, unless it's a Yelp review of course. read more

This is a chain that is starting to show up more and more. This is the first Iowa location I have been able to try. There was someone out front spinning a sign to get your attention on the location. There is a drive through but we opted to walk in and sit down. Heads up, if this place is busy the chairs are going to fill up fast. We got in line to order. I could easily read the sign on the prices and calorie. Thee do have good options. I picked a small size of the Smokehouse Beef & Cheddar Brisket-beef brisket smoked, melted cheddar, mayo, and Sweet BBQ Sauce. I did not get a meal, just the sandwich and the dill pickle spear. Hubby got the New York Steamer-Corned beef brisket and pastrami, melted provolone, deli mustard, mayo, and Italian dressing. His was the large size which was $9 dollar sandwich before adding the meal option of a drink and chips. My thought are. For the price I am not sure if it was worth it. Its a little slower for them to make it and make it hot. The hot.. I like, and it was busy so they weren't terribly slow. I think the flavor of my sandwich was good. I think for the price i was expecting a little more girth to my sandwich than what was presented maybe. Granted they have different choices than some other local sub places, and under 500 calorie menu. The location is on a crazy busy Ames street and will be hard to get out of if you are heading back north. I felt like they did a good job, everyone was smiling and kind but just wasnt as impressed as I thought with all the hype I had heard. heartbroken. I love their sandwiches. but the way I was treated while confirming my order over the phone for uber eats literally ruined my day. I don't know what was wrong with the young man today but if you're reading this sir you literally made me physically sick. the sandwich is made wrong. i didn't deserve what you said or did today. it's not right. I was a loyal customer. I am kind when I call. it's not my fault uber eats messes up the order. I was trying to continue ordering from you. you don't want my business?. my feelings are beyond hurt. what did I do to deserve the way you talked to me and being hung up on? I'm not sure. but I hope you have a better day tomorrow. if the owner sees this just know im shocked at what happened. the service is usually great despite uber eats. the radio buttons don't allow you to choose some of the options and sometimes sends the wrong ingredients over. the store already confirmed there's a problem. I know it's only a sandwich but you never know what polite service can do. for me this very rude interaction has ran me away. read more

The positives: Infinite flavor option Coke machine. Cool Cyclone mural. Hot subs. Vintage Ames fire department photographs. Huge bottled sauce assortment. Free fire hats with kids meals. Drive thru. Good size dining room. 500 calorie and under menu. Dalmatian table tops. The not so positive: Still working out the kinks. Service can be slow. Firehouse Subs is new to Ames, but it's not a new concept. There are 900 or so locations around the country. I've eaten at a few and the service is usually very quick. I'm sure this franchise will eventually get the hang of it as well. Ames is fortunate to have a location with a drive thru. Most locations I've seen don't have one. Overall, a nice food option and a step up from the Subways of the world. read more

Excellent staff, the employees were extremely friendly, especially the manager who took time out of his day to talk to us. We stopped in on a Saturday afternoon. This was my first visit to Firehouse Subs as I walked in the door I quickly found the line to order food I found the menu to be full of variety to choose from. As I finally settled on a sandwich I wasn't sure of the size of the same went so I went ahead and ordered the large because I like food. Got our number sat down the restaurant was fairly busy so I was okay with the five minute wait to get her meal brought to our table. The sandwich that I ordered did come out fresh and hot. I did notice that the restaurant was fairly busy and for a for my $10 sandwich I did not feel like this was the best deal and pick of choice. All in all I had a good experience I just was not blown away by Firehouse Subs as I have had several others Rave about how good it was. I will probably try it again it just probably won't be my first choice next time. I do however really like the idea of how it was fond founded by firefighters and all of the extra proceeds do go to help firefighters and First Responders. That in itself may get me to come back. read more

I have been looking for an awesome sandwich place since I moved here from San Diego. My new yummy place to eat.

We stopped in on a Sunday afternooon. My girlfriend had been to one in Kansas City and though it was pretty good so we decided to give this one in Ames a shot. We waited in line breifly and then were able to place our orders. I ordered the steak and cheese and she ordered the new york steamer. The meat was pulled out of a hot water bath and then water dripped onto my bun making it soggy. Besides that who wants boiled meat? Her sandwich was better then mine but still not worthy of returning for. Never again! There are too many good sandwich places to waste my time with something like this. read more

This is a chain of sub shops that just opened a branch in Ames a few days ago. It may be a little unfair of me to review it so soon after opening because any restaurant needs a little time to work out the bugs and it was also incredibly busy because of all the curious people wanting to try it out. The bottom line is that the food was quite good but (probably for these reasons) things were a bit disorganized. I had a meatball sub, which was excellent, and far superior to the version you get at Subway's. The meatballs were tasty, the bread was excellent, and the cheese was perfectly melted on top. At around 6 dollars for the sub alone, it was a bit pricey, but you can ameliorate this by signing up for the email newsletter before you go and getting an email in response giving you a free large drink. Then you can do an online survey using your receipt and get a free large drink for your next visit, and so on. So for six bucks you actually get a sub and drink, which isn't too bad. Speaking of drinks, they are served via one of those high-tech coke machines that allow you to get about 500 different varieties of coke. Unfortunately there was a line to use it as well as to order a sub, but that was because there was some sort of malfunction and some guy had to come out and work on it for a minute or two. The place was, as I said, quite crowded. When I arrived at 11:45 there wasn't much of a wait but I grabbed a table even before I placed my order. When I left at 12:30 the crowd had gotten way worse and it looked like a 15-minute wait to order. There was also a lot of ambient noise, so good luck trying to have a conversation with a friend. The way things work is, you place you order, give your name, and then they deliver your sub to your table. At least that's the way it is supposed to work. After fifteen minutes without getting my sub, I inquired about it, and a person behind the counter asked my name, checked my order, and said I would get it soon. Then he said "Wait a minute, did you say meatball sub?" I said I had and he said "We have you down for a brisket sub." He immediately said he would do a meatball sub for me and a few minutes later called me over and said "Here you go, Mike." I told him my name was Mark, and now I'm wondering if some poor guy named Mike didn't get his brisket sub. Anyway, I hope these issues are just the result of "opening week bugs" and will be ironed out soon. I certainly intend to return; that meatball sub really was good. read more

The best flavor in the sandwich I have had in a very long time. We explained we had never been here before and the cashier explained all condiments. She was very friendly and helpful. I feel like my husband and I could have shared but instead we both finished our sandwich. So yummy! Also had one of those fun coke machines that you can choose so many flavors! read more

Was put on hold in drive through then after a ten minute wait and starting half our order we were told there is a four limit sandwich order in the drive through! ! We have three kids and were told we needed to come in to place our order!! Don't go here!! Unbelievable! read more

Really disappointed today. Ordered Italian and grilled chicken salad. There was no dressing on it, but the lettuce was either completely wilted or just spines. Banana peppers AND olives were soggy and tasted old. Will try again, but not impressed read more

Good food but you need a parka to eat here. Thermostat on the wall is set on 63, freezing cold in this place. Apparently "corporate" controls the thermostat according to the employees. My next trip in to get food will be through the drive thru!!! read more

I currently reside in Ames and have been to this location 3 times now and there is always very poor customer service. The most recent visit it took nearly 35 minutes to get our subs!!! Subway and or Jimmy Johns are much quicker if you're looking for "fast food". read more

I've been to Firehouse three times now and I feel they've gotten better with each visit. They offer a good, hearty sandwich with fresh ingredients. Their traditional Hook & Ladder sub is as good as any sub I've had in Ames and the Turkey & Cranberry is fabulous. I had one of their Italian subs just yesterday and enjoyed it a lot. It was loaded with Italian meats, cheeses and toppings. I like the whole list of toppings (both free or extra cost), especially the pepperocinis and cherry peppers. They have a huge selection of hot sauces on the counter as you first walk in. I think there are about 50 bottles up there, all labeled with level of heat. I love their "keep the change concept" where you are given a choice if you'd like to donate the change remaining to the next dollar (for example, if your total is $10.73, they give you a choice to either get the change back or donate the remaining 27 cents to their firefighter fund). Cool firehouse and truck-related decor. We had good service and they do a nice job of explaining their concept and giving recommendations of their menu. This is tuning into one of my favorite sub spots in Ames. I highly recommend it. read more

The subs were fine. The service included the cashier giving unwanted and unwarranted fashion advice to my teenaged daughter. He told her that her hat made her look like a loser. Wrong on so many levels. I spoke with the manager when I was made aware of the situation. He said there would be follow up and an apology. No apology so I guess that behavior was okay with corporate. The free sub coupons went in the trash. Sandwiches not worth the harassment. read more
