For starters, the staff is great! They were patient and extremely kind. They all had smiles on their faces and were quite happy :) They're all very fast, but very efficient. Our food was delicious!!! The portion sizes for the price is perfect and the ingredients are FRESH! Everything tasted wonderful and it wasn't too much. We also got a smoothie, which was SO GOOD! It was very well blended and somehow stayed blended? Lol. Other places tend to half a** blend things and they wind up separating, but that was not the case here thankfully. It was also packed with flavor. They even have kid friendly options on the menu, too. Inside is more on the "intimate" side. It's small, but not cramped. The decor is upbeat and it's delightfully bright. It was a bit "noisy", but they blend smoothies, so ‍ lol. We didn't mind because it wasn't too loud; we still had a normal level of conversation without having to yell. I'd say it was an average noise level; not too loud and definitely not irritating. I usually have great experiences at this location, but at the latest I was disappointed. I spent $15 on a full meal, and every ingredient fell short of the regular proportion. I received a couple spoonfuls of corn, a paper-thin quesadilla, and my salsa was missing. I know working food service is difficult, but at the end of the day people are paying for food and you are providing it. Please train your workers better. :) read more

Since high school, Tropical Smoothie has been one of the best places I regularly enjoy coming to in Ames! The environment can be busy during lunch hours, but is pretty quiet in the mid to late afternoon. They provide a comfotable space that isn't too big but isn't to small and makes the experience with your food great! The best part about their food options is that none of the food makes me feel heavy upon consumption. I know that I'm getting genuine energy to my body. Health food restaurant! It's similar to Smoothie King only they offer so much more than smoothies! Healthy sandwiches, wraps, salads, flatbreads, fresh fruit, cookies, and trans fat free potato chips. On the pricy side? You bet! You see the blending and washing and toasting right from your seat. This little place was the only thing that came up when we did a search for vegetarian on yelp. I laugh cause I am sure there are other options out there but since it popped up we decided to try it. So glad that we took the chance on something new. It looks like a chain, but I am not sure as I have not seen one in Des Moines yet. You walk up like a fast food chain and place your order at the counter. Behind the register person there is a hive of workers blending shakes to order. There is smoothies but also salads, tacos, wraps, flat bread, sandwiches and more! They don't cater much for gluten free but there is enough to choose from that you can get around that. We decided to split the spinach supreme salad. He told us all the yummy stuff that was on it and with Mom being gluten,red meat, and cheese free we decided she would just give me those goodies and it would be fine. It come with a red raspberry vinaigrette and was very good. The salad display was very pretty. Everything was not just tossed on the top, it was separated out and made is really easy to remove what she could not eat. We then decided to try the new smoothy they had in the window. The Avocado based smooth. Oh so glad that we tried and split it. The gentleman at the register asked us if we wanted it in two cups which was very kind so we didn't have to try and do it ourselves. They took our name and then once the smoothie was ready, they brought that right over, and then the salad shortly after. I would recommend this place to anyone. You can take your food to go or sit and enjoy. We really did enjoy the meal and how clean and fresh everything was. I now want to try and duplicate the avocado smoothie. So good! read more

They serve food too! I had never heard of a Tropical Smoothie Cafe. I assumed it was just smoothies. I was wrong. Yes, there are smoothies, but there are also tacos, wraps, sandwiches, and more. And, they're tasty! I've tried two tacos and a wrap (not at the same time) from Tropical Smoothie Cafe. The Korean BBQ which comes with steak, was tasty, but the meat was a little fatty. Same went for the Thai steak taco but it won in the flavor department. The best thing I've eaten there has been the Thai chicken wrap. Holy smokes I could eat that every day. It's loaded with a spicy peanut sauce, chicken, carrots, and cilantro. Yum! The smoothies are very nice but I wish I could sub an included protein for something else, like a vitamin. I'm not so interested in whey or soy or pea protein, but if that's your thing then you can get it at TSC. I've tried both the health nut and limey blimey smoothies. I preferred the health nut by a long way. The limey was good, but a little too one note. When I went to the Tropical Smoothie Cafe on 517 Lincoln Way Suite 101, Ames, IA 50010 in November it was about 8 o'clock pm. My mom and I were thirsty, and there wasn't anything to drink. I suggested going to " the smoothie place " (aka Tropical Smoothie Cafe). When we went there were 2 friendly employes who didn't mind a little conversation. The smoothie I got was the Mango Magic, and my mom got the Island Green. The smoothies taste really good, and it seems really easy to make them. They make the smoothies in front of you, and I also enjoy how they don't just have smoothies, they have tacos, sandwiches, etc. They don't give you cup options, but the cups are pretty big. For the size of the cup, the prices are fair. It takes about 5 or so minutes to get your smoothie, and the price is about $5 per smoothie (the cups are 24 ounces).
