Nice drink menu (I enjoyed their take on the old fashioned) with cocktails and a nice craft beer selection. Everyone loved their food, from the barley soup to the ravioli, burger, Brussels salad, and the salmon I got. Hidden gem perhaps was their incredible dessert selection. Pork Belly app: thick cut pork belly in lettuce cups, topped with sweet thai glaze, pickled carrots, onions, celery, mint, thai basil, cilantro, scallions and crushed peanuts. A tad sweet for me but overall this was a great app. Slice of Sourdough: delish. Chicken Japchae: since my mom has celiac disease, we were very excited to see this on their menu - dining out with her can be a challenge. Especially at a place specializing in breads! The only unfortunate part about this dish is (I think) they forgot they already salted the chicken and salted it again...and then again. I'm not one to say something is too salty, I love my sodium but this was mouth-puckering salty. Inedible, actually, but the noodle dish itself was SO GOOD that she set the chicken aside and ate the entree. NY Strip Steak: perfectly med-rare, served with a garlic-rosemary potato pavé (like a potato casserole of sorts), roasted broccolini and a house steak sauce that was similar to a demi glaze. Not a bite left - no leftovers with this one. I ate the whole dang thing. Myself. And I have zero regrets. Crème Brûlée: I also couldn't leave without ordering a crème brûlée because there are some really bad ones out there. This did not disappoint. I also took home a Dubai Chocolate tort, Raspberry Crumble and a Flourless Chocolate cake. ZERO regrets but if you love Dubai chocolate then you know there are some discusting renditions of this in the market. However, the Dubai chocolate tort at Provisions Lot F is . I can't even describe how delicious this was and is worth the drive to Ames just for this dessert. If you're north of DSM for a game or whatever, I highly recommend Provisions! Since Dad's now a bit more mobility challenged (at 97), I've taken him to Provisions Lot F for dinner during my last 3 visits to Ames. The booths are large, the aisles are wide, and the bathroom is very accessible. He "complains" about the prices, but we both agree how much we like the menu, the service, and atmosphere. Actually, I came by myself the other night and sat at the bar as the restaurant seating was pretty much full. And despite a solid menu, I'm a creature of habit and chose what I "always do (with a glass of white wine). SOUP + SALAD + BREAD cup of soup (my choice: Salmon Chowder), house salad, warm multigrain roll, whipped cottage cheese dip Delicious, relatively healthy, and just the right amount of food. And I don't forget to pick up one of their wonderful baked goods on the way out. read more

I stayed for brunch and would recommend to anyone going to Ames. I was with a larger group and they were able to accommodate us quickly. They have a waitlist you can join ahead of time which helps especially if you have a larger group. I had the provisions breakfast and finished my plate. I went to Provisions for dinner on a weekend, and one thing to note upfront is that their menu varies significantly by time of day. I originally walked in at brunch, only to realize the menu was completely different and fairly limited for vegetarians. So, we came back for dinner instead. I'd recommend going for lunch or dinner on a weekday, or dinner on the weekend, if you're looking for more vegetarian-friendly options. We started with the sourdough onion rings, which were excellent. They came with a chipotle-style sauce that paired incredibly well with the onion rings and really elevated the dish. For entrées, we ordered the crispy rice salad, the barley ravioli, and a side salad. Starting with the crispy rice salad: when I hear "crispy rice," I usually expect pan-fried jasmine rice as the base. This wasn't that. Instead, it was more of a fresh salad with avocado, cashews, a peanut dressing, and a few crispy rice puffs on top. While it wasn't what I expected and was initially disappointing, the salad itself was very good and made with fresh ingredients. I added tofu, which was cooked well and paired nicely with the flavors. I'd order it again if I were specifically in the mood for an Asian-style salad, just know it's not a rice-based dish. The barley ravioli was beautifully presented and cooked perfectly. It was very soft and topped with fried onions, which added a unique savory element. The cranberries and oranges brought a sweet contrast that worked well overall, though the dish did lean quite sweet for a savory entrée. Dessert was the highlight of the meal. We ordered the banana toffee bread pudding, which was served warm with ice cream and was absolutely delicious, the perfect way to end the meal. This place is on my top 25 favorite restaurants of all time. I went YEARS ago on a work trip and finally was able to return. Let me tells you, they are still just as excellent as I remember. I ordered 3 appetizers for my meal. Starting with the baked brie, warm gooey middle with a crunchy walnut topping. They served it with crostinis which were absolutely delicious and paired perfectly. Then I dug into the house roasted brussels sprouts. Crispy, savory, and piled high with cheese and a balsamic glaze. Finally I finished with chicken liver. It was cooked in a rosemary, blackberry, and bourbon. Honestly I have not been able to find (or make) chicken liver as delicious as this. The restaurant is beautiful and upscale in a modest way. Anyway, I had salmon again for a second takeout dinner in a row, but the preparation here was disjointed and a hodge podge of flavors. The walnut rice crispies just made me angry because just classic white rice would have been solid with the salmon. The rest of the accoutrements were clashy and confusing. No thank you to the blood orange reduction, beets, and fennel. The saving grace of my meal was the French silk pie. It was $7 for a slice, if my memory is correct. It was creamy, sweet but not overly so, and silky and rich in flavor. So satisfying and my absolute favorite flavor of pie! My stomach is grumbling as I write this. I was visiting my niece at Iowa State University, and we came here for dessert this time around. But we also ate dinner here last time. This is a nice restaurant with very good food at decent prices. The service has been good both times. For dessert we got the Apple strudel and the chocolate cake. The Apple strudel was very good with light flaky crust and tasty apple fillings. Once again I am so grateful for Yelp for helping me find an amazing restaurant last minute while traveling. Atmosphere was beautiful and Ella our server was very nice and helpful with the menu. My Dad and I shared the tuna tartare. Loved the house made crispy crackers it was served with. I was a little underwhelming with the brussels sprouts caesar salad. It seemed like the kitchen forgot the dressing. Very dry. Sausage mushroom pizza was perfect. Crust was crisp but still chewy. And fluffy. Crimini mushrooms were a treat. We've been here a few times. It's kind of hit and miss (in my experience). My mom and I had the shrimp tacos thinking they would be a healthy option. They were deep fried and over done, both orders. My daughter had the salmon and thought it was great. My wife ordered the penne alla vodka and described it as "fine". The pizzas were also "fine". Service too was "fine", nothing exceptional. I hate it when salad and appetizer plates clutter up the table until after the entrees are finished. Overall, not terrible but nothing I am in a rush to get back to. Dined at Provisions Lot F on a Tuesday evening while on a business trip in Ames, IA. Even on a Tuesday evening the restaurant was bustling and busy which immediately told me we were in for a treat. Our group of 6 was seated in a booth towards the back of the restaurant which made us feel a bit better about being loud. For the table, we ordered the Deviled Eggs and Crispy Potatoes, both of which were really good. I was torn between a couple items but ultimately went with the Brussel Sprouts Caesar Salad with chicken for my main entrée. It was an elevated Caesar Salad that hit the spot especially because the chicken was tender and flavorful rather than bland grilled chicken which typically is added for Caesar salads. We had a vegetarian at the table and she found plenty of options to choose from and enjoyed the Quinoa Burger. Our server was attentive to our needs, drinks, and was friendly. I have lived locally for 4 years & always wanted to try this place. Last night my boyfriend & I went for dinner. The ambiance is romantic with soft lighting & some really cute sweetheart booth's. The cocktails; between the 2 of us we sampled almost all of the seasonal craft cocktails on the menu. My favorite was the Tequila, Mezcal with blackberry agave. The blackberry was sweet then the mezcal hit you right at the end of the sip. 5/5 my favorite drink, it's not easy to do Mezcal correctly. My boyfriend's favorite was Mrs. Smith cocktail with granny apple puree, served martini style. The bartender was amazing, I believe her name was Marley, Marlene? Sorry if I got that wrong. Food; Apps we ordered were Daily bread (with spreadable cheese) & pork belly (with pickled veggies) both VERY GOOD & presentation just as great! Main dishes; NY strip was cooked poorly, rare not medium rare. The meat itself was just not good quality. Chicken thighs; my complaint was that the sticky rice was absolutely flavorless & overall the dish could have used 3x as more of the soy based sauces. Dessert; I could come back to just have dessert. IT WAS THAT GOOD! We had the Rhubarb pie with homemade strawberry ice cream & the chocolate Salted caramel cake. Our server (who was awesome) said that the salted caramel cake never gets cut from the dessert menu for any season because it is so loved. I am a regular costumer of this place, specially the cafe area. Today, a Sunday, I stop by a pastry and coffee with my mom. As usual, I git my coffee and found a table to eat my pastry quickly and leave. As we are waiting our coffees to get ready, an employee comes over to ask us to leave the table. Apparently, during the weekends, we cannot seat without ordering from the menu. Note: there were many available tables. Is not like the restaurant was packed. It rubbed me the wrong way. This place has a lot of promise with their rotating seasonal menu...have always and always will love this concept. I started with the small portion of brussel sprout Caesar. Has a combo of roasted leaves of brussels, Along with raw shredded sprouts, tossed along with romaine in a Caesar vinaigrette. At least it didn't taste like a traditional Caesar dressing, but delish in its own right. It was a great starter. My main was dubbed "pork porterhouse". While technically correct, it's effectively a thick cut center chop. This is where some of the stars come off. It was tasty, the sides (especially beet salad) were really nicely done. But the pork, which I ordered medium, was overcooked and dry. It was very much a medium well, almost well done. The only touch of pink I saw was right at the bone. I stole some of my friend's country fries he got with his burger. They are addictive! Perfectly crispy on the outside while tender and fluffy inside. The service was fantastic though. I'm visiting IA from Detroit area and was told Provisions was exceptional. It didn't disappoint. I love a gin cocktail and love a Granny Smith apple. The Ms. Smith is as a well balanced cocktail and the perfect start. I had their Caesar salad with shaved fried brussel sprouts, dried cherries and candied almonds. Not terrible (that's an understatement!). The ambiance is comfortable and classy but relaxed. There's no sense of rush and that was awesome. For my main I had the Ham and Fig pizza. Wood fired and deceptively well cooked. It looked underdone but was crispy to the center. A balsamic drizzle would've set it off but no complaints here. The meal closed with the rhubarb galette and it was delicious. Topped with house made strawberry ice cream. Every bite and sip of the meal was perfect. My favorite part was the service. My server, Abby, interacting with her other table next to me encouraged them to take their time, not rush and enjoy one another. It's an appreciated difference for the rush of many restaurants.
