I just left your restaurant. I have to say it was the worst service I have had in many years. The hostess downstairs was great. She gave us menus n sent us upstairs as we wanted to sit outside. The waitress upstairs was chatting with a co worker sitting at the bar, told us to sit anywhere but a dirty table she hadn't cleared yet. She came over took our drink order then cleared a table before bringing our drink. Then after awhile took our food order ( steak quesadilla n artichoke dip off the happy hour). She didn't ask if we wanted it off HAppy hour or main...... hostess from downstairs. Rough foid up. Our server upstairs is still chatting with coworker at bar. We are almost done eating n server from upstairs ask if we need anything. We said napkins.. she brought them over n left. After finishing our food 15 minutes go by she finally asks if we need a drink . We said no just the bill. Our bill is not happy hour prices on food just drink. She comes over to collect $, we asked about why we are charged so much for our food as we ordered off the happy hour. She said "oh I didn't know. " not - oh I forgot to ask or anything.... Our first visit was a good one, as this sports bar proved to have good food, great customer service, and a solid menu for our entire party while seated on their upstairs outdoor rooftop. It's an Iowa State shrine with autographed items and photos from Cyclone legends. Our server, Julian, provided terrific customer service, combining a pleasant attitude with knowledge of his restaurant. I enjoyed my Blackened Chicken sandwich with Cajun mayo, a Wallaby's designated favorite and highly recommended by Julian. My Way Better half loved her Beet and Goat Cheese salad. read more

17 dollar chicken sandwich. Sandwich was nothing special. No avocado or brioche bun or anything that warrants it being that much. Worse or as good as a 6 dollar grilled chicken chick fil a sandwich. Horrible music. It was like 2010 pop but edm remixes. Idk if there was free drink refills but I hope there was cause the coke cups we got were tiny. Also idk why but the ranch and other sauces come in nice condiment cup but I got ketchup and it comes in this glass bottle and you can't squeeze it out. You can't gravity it out it's too thick. Can't squeeze it cause it's glass. Like ik you can like hit the bottle with some force to get it out but I'm imagining my grandma trying to get ketchup out of that bottle and that isn't happening. We have been to Wallaby's countless times for the patio on the roof, which we do love. The menu is very basic so we just stick with the burger or salad and a beer if wanting a drink. The last visit was the worst one yet. The "special" drink was not consumable, it wasn't just a dislike. Have they tried the drinks they make? I politely told the waitress that is wasn't drinkable but she never acknowledged it. The steak came medium raw- not what I asked for and it went uneaten but she never asked how the meal was. We really love eating close to home since we eat out often but probably will only go in the summer to enjoy the patio. Even for a quick meal it hasn't been good. Solid place for drinks, bar food, and to watch a game! I had a raspberry mule and the buffalo wrap with fries which was oversaturated with buffalo sauce. Hard to eat and especially hard to enjoy. Would go back but would make sure to order the wrap with less sauce. read more

DoorDash order - Ordered the steak sandwich and breaded mushrooms. Steak sandwich is described as "open faced". I ordered without arugula or horseradish. It arrived with 8 steak bites in foil and a SMALL piece of sourdough bread. ($22.95). Breaded mushrooms are burnt and inedible. I called the manager, Adam - he basically said he will advise DoorDash to update the customize option and hung up. I've been here multiple times and I've loved it every time except the last time I went. I normally hate name dropping people but Jam was the worst waitress I've ever had! She was rude, didn't write down our order and was very inconsiderate when we told her she got it wrong she said "are you sure that's what you said". She didn't even apologize, asked me to hand her my plate, didn't get us water after we asked, and acted like we were just an inconvenience to her entirely. If you ever go here and have Jam as a server request someone else. read more

We went here on July 3rd and the restaurant had a limited menu. I'm guessing it was maybe a staffing issue, but no one explained why so not really sure. Service was a bit slow which is why I'm thinking it was a staffing issue. The server was nice enough, it just took a bit longer than expected from previous visits to this restaurant. Since we didn't have many choices, I had a grilled chicken sandwich and my husband had a burger. The food was good, but nothing spectacular that I would seek it out as my first choice of bar & grill type places. A great locally owned restaurant in the Ames area! I have visited here several times when my parents or other friends come into town. They accommodate groups well and have a lively atmosphere. There's several different dining areas: rooftop, bar, big booths, and small tables. They have TV's for sports and lots of Ames/Iowa State memorabilia. The staff has always been great, prompt, and been able to give recommendations. I usually like to get their wraps (which seem to change with the seasons), but have also had their burgers. Their fries (both sweet potato and regular) are very good. As for drinks, I've only had their Moscow mules (deals on Mondays!) and the peach and raspberry are my favorites. read more

My Dad lives within walking distance of the current 4 Somerset Restaurants (The Cafe, Brick City Grill, El Azteca, and Wallaby's). During our recent trip to Iowa (a week ago), we managed to dine at all of them except El Azteca. Our trip to Wallaby's turned out to be a Saturday afternoon Lunch, upstairs on the semi-outdoor terrace. It was a pleasant early afternoon upstairs, with my only complaint being that my 92 year-old Dad had to walk a lot of stairs to get here, as the restaurant doesn't have an elevator. Once we got past that inconvenience, service was friendly and efficient, the company (me, Gayle, Scott, and Dad) was excellent, and the food was very good. I remember Scott having a Taco Salad, and me the Turkey Melt, but the only thing I remember past that is that we all enjoyed our meal. read more

Stopped for lunch for the first time in a very long time. Wallabys used to be pretty good, but the food has really gone down hill. Had the Ames Philly Cheesesteak. The meat/cheese mixture looked about like canned dog food, and tasted about the same as I would imagine dog food would taste. Had fries as the side, they were fine for the 11 that it came with. Our last 2 trips have been disappointing. 1) Bad service- we've had to ask for silverware, drink refills and appetizer plates, and even though the place was not busy either time we had to go to the hostess to ask for our server several times, 2) Bad food- my wife got the fish and chips- the fish was cold and soggy, our fries were cold to the touch, and when we asked our server for fresh fries and to take back the fish she replied, "I can but its going to be awhile before you get new food." Really????? I'm sad about this because it used to be one of our favorite places in Ames, but the last 2 trips in have been bad, so we are done with this place. read more

It's a cool family friendly sports bar with plenty of TVs (duh, it's a sports bar). The food is decent, but the service experience started off on the wrong foot. I walked in and found the hostess stand, but I couldn't find the hostess. I waited for about a minute or two and finally I decided to seat myself. I grabbed a table and waited - and waited - and waited. I got up and grabbed my own menu, then a server finally showed up. He apologized for the confusion and the delay. After that little hiccup, the service was spot-on. The drink refills were frequent without having to ask, and he followed up frequently to see if I needed anything else. I had the veggie burger and a side salad with tomato vinaigrette dressing (I'd skip this dressing folks, it tasted like it was just ketchup). The veggie patty was made from black beans, quinoa, and roasted red pepper. The burger was ok, but nothing to really write home about. The place has a nice atmosphere but it got a little loud around lunch time as customers started trickling in. I was in Ames working a basketball tournament and after a rough night out on the town the night prior, was in dire need of a Bloody Mary and some quality food after I finished up work. Amidst COVID, the only seating tha t was available was on the rooftop, but it was perfect! At the point that we went (late June/early July), Ames wasn't requiring masks, but still everyone in the restaurant was wearing them. I went with the pork tenderloin sandwich, as it seems to be an Ames specialty! While I don't often eat pork, I figured that I had to go with one of the things that they were known for. The server recommended me getting it fried and I had it made spicy. Definitely as good as one can get, especially for someone who isn't in love with pork tenderloin. In the past I was less that impressed with Wallaby's and after a few years.. I've got to say I still don't understand the hype. We waited a little while to get a table on a Sunday afternoon, which was to be expected. We started with the breaded mushrooms, and these were certainly the highlight of the meal. I'd come back for those. I had a burger while the other two in my group had wraps. The wraps looked pretty filling and decent, however the stuffed jalapeño burger just seemed to lack much effort. Presentation was decent, but upon the first bite things started to get messy fast. I appreciated the concept of the burger but the grease from stuffing it with cream cheese was just gross. Sweet potato fries seemed to be from frozen, and were either not cooked to a crisp or left waiting and got soggy. Overall not a great experience, I'm not sure I'll give Wallaby's a 3rd chance, but we shall see. read more

Came during an iowa state basketball game and had to wait to be seated. The hostess were super nice, there was a tv to watch and we could go to the bar to grab a drink if we wanted. We were seated before the estimated wait time. Our waitress was super nice and attentive. We started with some drinks. I ordered the grapefruit martini and it was great; my fiancé had a local beer which he enjoyed. Our food came out super fast. I ordered the Buffalo chicken sandwich with a side salad. It wasn't super spicy but it was good. My fiancé got the sunny side burger with fries. His burger was cooked well, but the egg was very runny which I love, but isn't his preference. The crinkle fries were amazing! Definitely will come back when it's warmer and we can sit outside :) read more

Went in a few days ago. Overheard the bartender and server talking poorly about coworkers and management quite noticeably. Bartender was tall with glasses and I believe someone called the server "Bree". I found that to be very unprofessional and unpleasant. Even if coworkers are doing a poor job and management is "slacking", don't speak like this in front of customers. Maybe give more thought to who you hire. Food and drinks were good. read more

Wallaby's is a pretty classic sports bar where you get about what you would expect. It is in a nice location on the north side of Ames and it has a pretty clean and new feel to it. They have classic bar food and the burger that I had was pretty good, just nothing to write home about. This is a fine place if you want a little higher scale sports bar! read more

Ive been a fan of Wallabys for years, but an experience yesterday has pushed me into the "not a fan" group. For some background: for the last several months the kitchen has been closing before 9pm because of "supply issues" which I think are actually staffing issues. But that aside, they usually tried to cook us something if I meandered in at around 8:30, that was not my biggest complaint lately. Yesterday I went there for lunch and not only was the burger smaller, but so were the fries and the portion. I normally couldn't see the plate through the mountain of fries, but not only were they scarce, they were all the little bits not bigger than an inch long and they were not cooked thoroughly. I wouldv'e gladly waited longer for cooked, more whole/complete fries. A burger (downsized) and fries (also downsized) and a drink came out to $20. I know prices have gone up, but that is a little ridiculous, especially for a lunch with smaller portions than ever before. I don't think I will be back for a long time, and I am an Ames native. read more
