The sauces!
Clare D.

Jethro's BBQ is a local chain that serves heaping family platters, such as The Iowa Platter with four different meats, four sides, and your choice of Texas toast or cornbread muffins. Six different sauces provided ample variety for the most discerning palate. The three of us ate a meal that easily feeds four... and the price of the platter was under $30! That's just insane! You must go here! About the only issue we had was our platter was not hot, but just a little above room temperature, so I get the feeling that the food was just sitting around all day in containers waiting to be plucked out and served. Still, the meats ranged anywhere from good to very good, so I'm satisfied with the food here and the great value for your money.

Worth the visit!! Jethro's has been on a number of food TV shows and famous competitive eaters have made their way out to Ames for various food challenges. The facility itself is HUGE. They have a large game room, private dining rooms, bar and regular dining space. It was pretty busy during our last visit so we took a seat at the bar. Plenty of big screen TVs to keep you entertained. They got a little bit of everything on the menu so you can't go wrong. We tried the wings and then we got the Cajun Sandwich and the Fried Pork sandwich, they were both very good and packed with flavor. All of their sides are homemade! Service was also great which made our stay even better. It will likely be a regular spot I visit the next time I'm in Ames.

Carolina & Garlic Parm 3

When you enter it feels very homey, like a dive bar with the budget for a few extra televisions. Tuesdays are 2 fo 1 wings at Jethro's, our service was amazing and super attentive, couldn't of asked for better. I ordered 20 wings with the Garlic Parm and the Carolina sauces. Amazing. Not too much nor too little, the Garlic parm was completely different to what you may find anywhere else, definitely a worthy choice (garlic parm and jethro's).

Brisket sandwich, mac 'n cheese

This is one of a small chain of BBQ restaurants in the greater Des Moines region. The menu offers many of the same quality dishes that were served up in the main Des Moines outlet, which was destroyed by fire and never reopened. And don't let looks deceive you. Physically, this is an enormous sports bar, with tv's, pool and other games galore. It is also a full service bar. But the 'cue is squarely in the Jethro's tradition, and the service is very good. $19.51 + tip purchased a hefty stockyard sandwich with a side of mac 'n cheese, and a refillable soft drink (Pepsi products). Taking the sandwich apart revealed sliced brisket and burnt ends that were moist, tender, well smoked, and flavorful. The mac 'n cheese, a Jethro's signature dish, was creamy and loaded with flavor-- but the pasta was rigatoni, so naturally the flavor exploded in one's mouth. In sum, this is solid 'cue, and it is well worth driving in from the interstate.

Very good service and tasty entrées. We originally told would be waiting an hour for our seats but ended up only being 15 minutes.

Ragin' Cajun on the menu

Man, this place is huge! It's a sports bar, BBQ restaurant, game room, and hotel conference room(s) all rolled into one. The Ragin' Cajun sandwich was great at first, but by the end it was only so-so. I kind of felt the same about the Jalapeno Cream Corn. If I had a do-over, I'd probably try the brisket instead.

Jethro's is a staple in central Iowa for a good reason. They have a large variety of foods and a relaxed atmosphere. The Ames location has a large waiting area and plenty of tables to accommodate large groups. There is a bar as well. The staff is always welcoming and accommodating. They have many TV's to watch any big game. The decorations include Iowa State memorabilia and other country things. Most often I get their wings, which are a little different then your typical wing (see attached picture for visual). They have a list of their sauces and the ones I've tried have all been good. My favorite is the BBQ rub which is like a glaze. I have also had their brisket and chicken which is also very good. They know how to prepare their meats! They are open from brunch which also includes a lot of great breakfast foods that will appeal to everyone in your group.

Rib and wing combo with Mac and cheese and jalopeno cream corn

So I'm waiting for work and this place was recommended by my hotel peep! Said I would love it! She was greatly disappointed as was I! Pros of the place is large area, lots of TV's for watching sports and a very solid beer lineup both tap and cans! (Btw cans are like 16oz ones)! Got the rib and wing platter and the wings were very good and big which I appreciate! The jalopeno cream corn was very good and had a great smokey taste to it! Not a pro was service was poor! I ate at the bar and the bartender was not engaging, not really friendly and barely checked in on me! Ribs were decent but not ones I'd run across a busy freeway for! They have 6 locations I was told all over the Des Moines area and some have specific things they are known for! I'm willing to give it another shot but if I go and see the same bartender working I will do a quick u turn out! This place is pretty good for bbq. Wide open space and easy to find! As someone who doesn't eat a lot of American bbq or enjoys it too much, I really liked the food here and the sides are excellent

Like I said in another review for a different location, I try to stop by one of these places whenever I'm in the area. This was my first time trying out this location, as I moved away before they had opened. This location was a little different. I didn't get pictures, but much more ISU stuff around (since we're in Ames, makes sense!), a big arcade with pool tables in a separate room. I ordered my standard waffle fry nachos (seriously try these if you haven't yet!) and this was the first time my waitress/bartender told me to ask her for more fixings if I wanted. I was impressed at my appetite this time around. Normally it's such a big serving I have to take some back to the hotel. This time, I was able to finish it all. Great service, as well. If you've been to Ames, you'll know it's almost a "two-season" town. You've got the "student season" when school is in session and restaurants and everything is a lot busier and then you've got "summer season". I was lucky enough to go during the "summer season" and this was a great visit with no wait at all.

I love their boneless bbq dry rub wings. So delicious and tasty and reasonably priced. Especially on Thursdays for half price wings.

Boulder Tap House

We ventured into Boulder Tap House for a later dinner this past Sunday. Boulder Tap House appears…read moreto be a midwest chain with 11 locations throughout Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. It's amazing how many restaurants are closed on Sunday in Ames... Not much of a demand for Sunday dine-in business in a college town I guess...? Lol Fortunately Boulder Tap House is open from at least 1100 AM until 1000 PM every day of the week. Boulder Tap House sits just off of the Southeast corner of South Duff and East Lincoln Way. It has a large parking lot and it's easy to access. We were greeted right away when we walked in and shown to a booth. Seating is a mix of low and high top tables and chairs, booths, and standard stool seating around the bar. There are TONS of TVs around the dining room and bar; most of which had football games running on them. Our server was named Zach. He stopped by shortly after we were seated, introduced himself and dropped off menus etc., and took our drink orders (Pepsi products). He was back shortly with the first round of drinks and to take our food order. We ordered: 1x Unsweetened ice tea 1x Cherry Pepsi 1x Cheddar house made Boulder cheese cubes 1x Medium (12) order of wings with their honey BBQ sauce. Blue cheese on the side 1x Side salad with ranch dressing 1x Swicy burger and fries Zach was attentive and personable and provided good service the entire meal. He made sure to check on us several times and kept our drink glasses topped off. I HIGHLY recommend the cheese cubes! Choose cheddar, white cheddar, or pepper jack cheese. Served with Burger Co. sauce. The Burger Co. sauce reminded me of a spicy ranch. These things are HUGE. Each will take you at least two bites. They were hot and fresh right out of the fryer. I cut mine in half with a fork to make them more bite size... And to avoid 3rd degree burns from the molten cheese! Lol The wings were sauced well and cooked perfectly! Very good! The swicy burger is where I'm torn. I see other reviews of this burger and everyone really seems to like it. It tasted okay... But I feel like it's trying too hard. Here's how it's described on the menu: "A little bit of sweet and a little bit of spice. A 6oz Angus burger patty topped with ghost pepper jack cheese, fried jalapeños, spicy peach sauce, butter leaf lettuce, tomato and pickles. Served on a toasted bun." First of all there was no tomato or pickles on mine... I didn't request them to be held so I'm not sure what happened there. There was a piece of lettuce...it was entirely covered up by the patty. I didn't even know it was on there until I bit into it. I was okay with this. The beef didn't taste fresh to me. I grew up in a small rural Iowa town of 500 where my dad was the city maintenance man. His boss (the mayor) also ran the local meat locker... It tasted like an overcooked frozen patty. Though I believe Boulder Tap House advertises fresh ground chuck...never frozen...at a lot of their locations. I'm not sure how it's distributed to the Ames location. In any case the taste of the beef was overshadowed by the topping to the point it became a texture v. the focus of the sandwich. All of the burgers listed using the 6 oz Angus patty are advertised the same way. Very heavy on the specialty toppings... The regular burger on the menu is advertised as a 8 oz burger patty (not specifically Angus). Same with the Smashburger (two 4 oz patties). Maybe the patties on these two items are different quality? I took a small piece of the burger itself and it wasn't great. It had the taste you come to expect with frozen patties. It was just meh. It lacked the flavor of fresh beef. I expected better for a $16 burger and fry combo. I kind of felt like the last burger I got at a Chili's was better meat. Now the fries though... Lightly battered and then fried! Served hot. On the thinner side... But these were exceptionally good...! I'd probably avoid the burgers on any future trips to a Boulder Tap House. But that's just me! If you like the novelty of topping and don't care about the quality of the beef. You do you! And I could be wrong about the patty...that's just how it tasted to me. I would go back. However next time I'd stick to the appetizers, wings, or one of the other sandwiches! Our meal overall was good. Payment is done with your server at the table. Everything was reasonably priced. Zach was terrific!

The servers got our orders wrong (we ordered bone in wings and they gave us boneless) and she took it back and have us waited for another 10 mins. My potato soup was horrible, looks like from bottom of the pot that we so thick that I could used a folk to scoop and tasted nothing like potato. The Caesar salad dressing was sour. The cheese curd was good but can't have more than 2. Overall, didn't like the food and experience.
