Gayle, Scott, Dad, and I had just experienced a forgettable meal experience at the nearby HyVee Cafe. Instead of heading straight home, Scott suggested that we drive past our former Ames house and then stop for a drink at Mother's Pub, which was known as Dugan's Deli when he attended ISU. We had a nice time, as we ordered our drinks, took them to the patio outside, and let Scott reminisce about his college days. And even though I graduated as a Hawkeye, I could tell my own Ames stories, like the time Bob Merrill and I stormed onto the old Clyde Williams Field with others to cheer the ISU football team during coin toss. As ISU is not in session, Mother's Pub was a bit quiet, like we were almost the only ones there. I wouldn't mind coming back to hear some live music and hanging out with family again. read more

One solid year I've been going to Mother's and I could name off every experience I've had. Mostly because they've been full of great times and great beverages. They are always having deals as well, which make my pockets a little happier knowing I'm not losing a lot of change. The environment can be either quiet, kind of busy or so packed you can't get in. Most nights I'd say are fairly easy to get in and find a table. Its also a great place to take some birthday shots! Definitely recommend the green tea shots. I had a whiskey sour during their whiskey Wednesday and it was awesome! They have many options so you can't go wrong of what you choose. Talk about a hangout spot! Mother's is a frequent bar I attend to with friends because of how close it is to campus and the space. Walking into Mother's you are greeted with a large space with long tables and a pool table. There is plenty of seats at a table so you can come here with a decent size group. Depending on the week and time it can be very crowded or very empty. Our favorite activity is usually playing the board and card games they have to offer! When It comes to drinks this a great place to get mixed drink. I love a good old fashioned so whiskey Wednesday are always calling my name! The bartenders are very friendly and if they don't know how to make a drink they'll look up instructions to make it! They have a decent amount of beer options most of them being ones you can find anywhere. They do have food options, but I would recommend not paying for the food. Their pizza is really just over priced Jack's pizza. They do allow you to order food from other places which is a plus! Arguably the best part of Mother's is the trivia. Although my friends and I have yet to win a trivia night they are tons of fun and often have topics over pop culture. Overall Mother's is always a fun night out with friends! read more

Perfect little spot for economical drinks. I quickly fell in love with this place. Oh and they now serve Rico's Tacos every night.

You might be wondering why I rated this a 5 star. Don't wonder any longer. This place has the best White Russians I've ever had. For those of you that don't know what a White Russian is, it's a milky blend of vodka and coffee flavored liquor. Mmmm. My only complaint.. which doesn't merit a loss of star... is one time when some friends and I tried to get drinks, they would not serve us. It was my birthday and I was pretty sad. Instead, after some banter, the bartender gave us shots. My friend yacked his up right outside the backdoor. Overall, good selection of drinks, but Christ almighty... those Russians are so good.
