A place like this make Ames seem far more exciting than it is, ha! Right on Main Street surrounded by thrift shops and random bars, you'll find this gem. I was here a few months back for the wine bar part of it. Think: vending machine but wine! I mean, C'mon! If you're doing wine from the machines, you load money on a card when you walk in and use that to dispense wine throughout your visit. When you leave, you close that tab and they will reimburse the $ on the card you didn't spend. Win win! But Friday's are my favorite. They probably had 8 different kinds of Copper Coolers, their version of Moscow Mules and almost everyone in the bar has one on a Friday. Visited this wine bar with my girls for a night out! It's located on Main Street away from the other (college) bars. We all got Moscow Mules because the deal was $5 on Friday's. I chose to get the southern peach mule, which was pretty good, but not the best I've ever had. They had plenty of seating, a few TV's, and lots of games to play with your group to make for a social evening. The two bartenders were nice and made conversation. It wasn't too loud and the music selection was fantastic, made me want to sing some karaoke! I feel like this place is something you'd find in a larger city, so it was a surprise to find here in Ames. read more

The wine self-serve machines are so fun! It is a great way to taste different wines! In addition to great wines, there are delicious cocktails, mules, and local beers on tap! All of the "snacks" are wonderful as well. We got the salmon plate, the cheese and charcuterie, and cheese and baguette plates and loved them all. Two plates suited us well when we went in as a couple and then three was great for the four of us last night. The workers and owner are energetic, nice, and welcoming. They are always working hard and bustling around to make sure everyone is happy. They also make sure to clean and wear their masks. I really like this bar. Maybe it was Ana, the amazing bartender, or the wide selection of beers and mixed drinks, but I get a good vibe from this place. With lots of sitting room and various games, you will not be left feeling uncomfortable here. What's also cool is that they have a wide variety of wines that you can try and pay by the size of drink, so you may try several smaller samples if you'd like. The woman behind the bar was extremely condescending and rude. They had many empty bottles and were in no hurry to change the bottles out. We waited 15-20 minutes to get their system up and running. Collect concept I've seen! I'm originally from Saint Louis and they have nothing similar to this. No waitresses makes it super easy to hold conversations with your group without interruptions and have a great time! Comfortable seating is available, but I hear it can be a challenge when it's busy. Tonight (1/9/16) wasn't too bad and we were able to find a seat on the front couch. Several varieties of wine are available however was a little disappointed that more description wasn't available. They are sorted in body/flavor type which was very helpful. Wine glasses were acceptable quality, wish they had white glasses above white and red above red though. Beer and additional cocktails are available for those non-wine drinkers. They also have a select pick of cheese/chocolate plates for consumption that are great! There are plenty of wine choices across a variety of price points in a relaxed/classy environment. Friendly service with cool music and lighting make for a pleasant evening. The wine card procedure (described in other reviews) provides a veritable buffet for a tasty oenological experience. You can buy just a sample or a small glass as you get familiar with the wines available, then, when you have locked on to a favorite, fill a large glass and enjoy! Della Viti is handy for couples, small groups, and parties and they liberally let you bring in your own food to consume with their wine. My only complaint? I've been there many times (not by choice, but to meet co-workers) and I like the concept, but hate the execution. The wine is expensive, but I am willing to pay extra for the ambiance. The problem is the bartender, who I think is also the owner. She may be a good business-woman, but she is an awful bartender. She belittles me every time I am there, usually because I don't want to leave any $$ in the account, but prefer to cash out. She routinely informs me that it would make more sense to leave $$ in the account. She also makes me go to the back of the line, if there are people who just came in and want to start the tab, while I just want to cash out. Once she yelled at our group for getting extra chairs from a different table. The bottom line is that if I am paying $7 for half a glass of cheap wine, the least I expect is nice service. Wow, I just read Bethany's response, and she managed to even then sound condescending. I don't need you to "encourage" me to do anything when I am out with friends. I just want you to be polite and not belittle me and my friends. And it's not a one time thing, it's systematic. I dread going in there because of your attitude and have (and will continue to) encouraged my co-workers to go elsewhere. read more

The atmosphere is amazing at Della Viti! Very cozy and casual place. Della Viti is basically a self service wine bar. They have some nice black leather couches along with some tables (a wine barrel in the center with a wood counter top like thing wrapping around it). When you first walk-in they ask you for your ID and you are then given a hotel like key-card with pre-paid money you put on it. You then walk up to the wine station you want, insert your key-card and choose between three options: a taste, half glass, and full glass. They have a good selection of different wines. It seems that they go in order from sweet to dry. If you happen to like that particular wine, you have the option to purchase a bottle (to take home or drink there). They also have a small selection of beer and hard liquor as well. When you are done with your visit, you must give your key-card back to them and they will save the remaining dollar amount on your account. If the wine bottle happens to run out and not dispense your full amount; you are not fully charged for the option you chose. The only drawback to this place is the price of the wine, but really it is not all that bad. The price is comparable to what you would pay at a restaurant. I went with a friend for the first time. She showed me the ropes. It can be a bit confusing so definitely have staff or a Della Viti Veteran show you. I kept forgetting to put my card in the machine! I think the prices are right for the types of wine they had on tap. After just moving back from living in Europe for 2 years it's nice to find a place with good European wine. The gentleman working spent a lot of time talking and explaining the different types of wine I didn't think it was too expensive as previous reviewers did. You get what you pay for. My friends and I visited Ames last weekend for a wedding. I'm a sommelier from California and I deal with wine daily. I was very satisfied that they offered a nice variety of wine and even Ports. Also, not many places pour white Burgundy or Côtes du Rhône by the glass. The prices are appropriate considering the quality of wine. My friends and I started with a wine card, had a charcuterie platter, and had so much fun that we decided to stay a little longer and pop a bottle of 2010 Saddleback Cabernet (an outstanding wine from Napa). I met the owner Beth who was very friendly and knowledgable about her wine inventory. In my opinion, Della Viti deserves considerably more kudos than is currently posted. read more

Expensive. Nice place, different, worth a visit but the prices are ridiculous. I think they have a lot of wine to choose from but the staff needs to pay attention for when bottles go empty and change them before customers ask them too. Doesn't seem to get very busy so the staff has no excuses for not keeping tables clear of glasses. Also if they are going to have a tv behind the bar they need to decide what they will show...while me and friends were there they had mma cage fighting on??? (It's a wine bar for goodness sales) Then a half hour commercial for adopting starving children in Africa, Neither was appropriate for this type of place. Yesterday I had my first time in this place, I think the last one too. You have to give them your card with a minimum charge of $10, so far everything great! then you go to the self service wine. But at the end, I just had the chance to drink one complete drink. Two more tries and the bottles were empty, but no matter that, the complete charge in both of the cases was done. I let "Abby" the waitress know two times about it and she explained me that the machine will just charge the exactly amount dispensed. And it was at the fourth time when the wine card didn't have more funds. So when I went to the cashier for my credit card the total was anyway $10. I know that is not a big deal, but definitely is when I just could try a small drink of $2.50. And even worst when you ask for the service people to help, and the just ignore you as if it was convenient just to keep empty bottles and to get the money anyway. I report the case to the official business control, I guess this is not the first time and I'm not the first person who has the same situation. And if the do the same to a certain number of people, it turns into not that legal activity. read more

Seriously! Warm white wine.....when I asked about it they said it takes 5-10 minutes to chill when they put in a new bottle. Why isn't the bottle cold before they put it in the machine. The crazy part is I walked up to the machine as they were changing the bottle and asked when they were done if it was ready and she said yes. Really! Even after 20 minutes the same white wine still wasn't cold. They didn't offer me a new glass or anything. She acted like warm white wine is normal! I don't want to drink warm $12 Pinot Grigio! There are far cheaper places to drink in Ames, but I haven't found a better wine place than this. This is a wonderful place to kill several hours trying great wines, settling in on one, visiting w friends! Full bar, great atmosphere, yummy appetizer and dessert choices for noshing. Staff is great, Beth the owner is warm and welcoming. This is not your average wine bar! It's casual and comfortable! We also recently found out its a great place to host a private event, our sunday afternoon bridal shower was fabulous with mimosa bar, huge cheese boards and veggie trays. Was a big success! I was at the wine bar with my wife and a couple of friends last Saturday. The music was insanely loud, to the point where it was very difficult to have a conversation. That wouldn't bother me at all if I was at a regular bar or nightclub but it's not something one should expect at a wine bar.
