The Filling Station is a gas station, an extra stocked convenience store, a breakfast/lunch food counter, and a tables inside and out to enjoy your refreshments and the view. Gayle and I stopped in today after reading about it within some "48 hours in Ames" article. I ordered a brisket grilled cheese sandwich, while Gayle chose a similar one with blackberry flavoring. We split a can of Guinness off the convenience store fridge, and then sat outside for our street and car wash view. We had nice shade on a not too hot day and took the opportunity to hang out bit after we finished our meal. This was a tasty and pleasant experience of good value overall. read more

Was nearby for an early meeting and had a gap before my next one. Decided to grab breakfast and rolled the dice and just went here for a quick bite. Wow, it is a lot more than a quick breakfast at a gas station! The kitchen was complete and had a full menu offered up. It was also a commercial bakery... multiple bakers working on cinnamon rolls that looked divine! I had a breakfast quesadilla. It had real flavor in it with candied jalapeños. It was a lot but judging from all the plates I saw come out of the kitchen everything there was solid in serving size. The chai latte was good too. And the folks were nice. They definitely have loyal fans locally, folks were ordering for tailgates! read more

Stop here if you are in Ames. They have an incredible breakfast and lunch. ISU guys come here to eat often because it is so "filling". Also has fuel for your vehicle and a great variety of beer with a walk in cooler. Service is great. read more

I was recently diagnosed with Hashimotos and immediately after had to travel to Iowa for work. I was desperate to find something gluten and dairy free to eat, so I wouldn't get sick. To my utter DELIGHT and SURPRISE, this "gas station" across from my hotel is much, much more than a gas station. They had healthy food options, supplements, and protein powder, in addition to other food that looked amazing. At a time in my life when I was not feeling well and very discouraged, The Filling Station was a miracle to me. I was able to eat healthy, feel good, and my business trip was a success. I was staying at the hotel across the street and didn't have time to grab breakfast at the restaurant there. On of the hotel staff recommended I check out the gas station across the street. I went over to the Filling Station and was impressed with what I found. It's a great little spot with a good variety of breakfast options and they make a great breakfast "Toaster" sandwich that I'm still thinking about. The main reason for only four stars is that I couldn't give a gas station restaurant 5 stars. read more

Been wanting to try this for years. Finally went for early breakfast on Sunday. 7 am there is no crowd! Later could get busy. Small seating area and an otherwise cool store with a nice selection of food and liquor. Breakfast was great. Got basic breakfast plate- ton of food! Great service, friendly staff. I stopped quick on my way through Ames for work. I needed a quick bite for lunch so grabbed the Cowboy Quesadilla from the warmer and ate it outside on the patio. It was THE BEST. I told my husband I had good gas station food and he laughed at me. So, I've been on a mission to get him to go eat in at the restaurant. How many times have you been trying to find a place to get a decent breakfast, fill up the tank, and grab some snacks for the road before a daylong drive? This place has it all. The diner is excellent. I confess I'm terrified of what "blueberry brisket" really might be, but you needn't venture that far. I had some biscuits and gravy the other day that were just right. The coffee is also some of the best in Ames, despite being merely a gas station. I grabbed food here for breakfast last week. The building is half restaurant and half convenience store, with a complete gas service area in the front. I walked through the convenience store portion before walking over to the restaurant to place an order for breakfast. I asked the store associate if the English muffin breakfast sandwich or biscuit breakfast sandwich was better, and she told me that she recommends the biscuits, as the biscuits are baked in-house every morning. I went with the bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit, and I also bought a cinnamon roll from the bakery case. I waited in the restaurant seating area while my food was prepared, and the chef hand-delivered my food to me, which was really nice. The customer service was fantastic, and I felt very welcomed here. The total for the breakfast sandwich and cinnamon roll was a little over $10. The sandwich was wonderful and the biscuit was the best biscuit I've ever had. The cinnamon roll was overly sweet and probably needed a cream cheese icing to cut the sweetness. I will definitely come back here, and I am eager to try some of their other menu items! read more

This is a COOL gas station/convenience store. I've driven past it MANY times and never realized they serve actual food inside or that it was so hip. We stopped in to look around and try out the food. It was pretty good! The ONLY reason this wasn't a 5 star experience is because the food is spendy for what you actually get. BUT this is definitely the best gas station food I've ever had. The smoked salmon toast was delicious and my husband loved his pork belly blt. We knew we were going to enjoy it though because it smells SO. DANG. GOOD. in there. This place is super clean, with cute decor and every worker we interacted with was super nice. The food came out fast and my mocha was warm and delicious. I would highly recommend this pit stop if you are just passing through, need something quick for lunch, or need to fuel up (in more ways than one) for a road trip. My husband works in Ames and said he would love to come back to try some other items. read more

Decided to give the Filling Station another try after the burnt food last time and again... the worst breakfast ever. Stopped by on April 14, 2024 around 8am and ordered the basic breakfast of two overeasy eggs, bacon, hashbrowns and toast along with two other orders. What I received was two eggs overcooked to where the eggs were dark brown and rubbery, three slices of very thin ham, no hashbrowns with okay bacon and toast. The other orders were not any better and were also not correct and cooked poorly. Unforntunately, we took the orders to go and were already on the highway, so we did not turn around. We will never go back. This use to be our place for breakfast when in Ames - no longer, which is very sad. read more

I normally do not look to gas stations when in search of food. However, the filling station is an exception. I needed to fill up on gas, went in to prepay, and noticed that the Phillips 66 hosts The Filling Station inside. It has options for both breakfast and lunch. I ordered the farmer's burrito and it did not disappoint. The staff were very friendly and was patient with me when I could not decide on what to order. I highly recommend this spot for anyone needing a quick bite to eat in the morning or for lunch. They have a sit-down area as well if you are wanting to eat inside. read more

What a great find in Ames. During ISU move in we stumbled upon the filling station near the apartment complex. We picked up donuts but that was to sweet for me so I went in and got a breakfast sandwich on an English muffin with ham, fried egg and cheese. It was great!! I think they make the muffins and biscuits. I bought the donuts for my daughter but she ate half my sandwich. They also have breakfast burrito's and serve lunch but close at 2PM. They also make all the baked goods sold in the store. I'm worried as the rice krispy treat was delicious and almost as good as mine. I'll look forward to this place on my returns to ISU. read more

I didn't know what to expect when we stopped in for breakfast. We are out of towners and finding a good place can be hard. After reading other reviews we decided to give it a shot. So glad we did! The pancakes were amazing! Biscuits were amazing. The store attached sells baked goods, cookies, scones etc. A very nice young man took our order and delivered our food to the table. The service and food were do good we went a second time. The place is cute, clean and welcoming. My only regret is that we didn't have a chance to have lunch there. This was a pleasant surprise. We were traveling and spent the night near Ames and the hotel recommended this place for breakfast. The employees are just the greatest and the food was literally the best breakfast we have ever had. We ate breakfast in their restaurant area. Biscuits and gravy with eggs and a veggie omelet with hash browns. Who knew we would get great service and great food there? We will definitely stop there the next time we are in the area! read more

Fantastic breakfast cooked to order or grab-and-go from hot case. Also make good Americanos at full-service espresso bar (order espresso at grill, not the self-service machine). Love the breakfast quesadilla, but might want to share. Good sized portions. Highly recommended!!! read more
