The orders are shipped to me in Colorado and I've not had any problem with how they arrive. Super pricey BUT it's actually worth it! We experienced quality collocates, where I've never had it. I never knew what great chocolate was until I tried it. I'm afraid it raised the standard from here on out but it was an exceptional experience. They also have gelato which is amazing as well and the ambiance inside is just very cozy. Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow! Loved the service, the selection, and the location in Ames' historic downtown district, but I have to admit, I LOVED their chocolate. An incredible array of various chocolate options, and I had a tough time making a decision due to the superb way they display their wares. Lots of dark and milk chocolate choices to pick from, and as a milk chocolate fan, I was pleased to have that variety. I was told by a local that their gelato is incredible, and watched others sample and select it, but I did not have the time of the stomach room to do it. Rain check? Definitely stop in the try the gelato! The gelato here is a perfect treat on a summer day. Like many, we were greeted by charming live piano music. The seating is definitely more spaced out since covid but they still kept the charm of the place. You can eat indoors or at one of their outdoor tables. I'm usually never in Iowa, but when I'm there, you could find me at Chocolaterie Stam. Such a cute little chocolate shop! They even have a gelato corner. Walking in reminded me of the Werther's commercial thats always on t.v. The shop had a super classic, old school, and homey feel. There were comfy couches and chairs along the side and in the back corner. Homemade chocolate lined the other side of the wall. The smell of chocolate overwhelms your nostrils (in a good way). The owner even gave us samples to try before buying them! Everyone was super friendly and welcoming. If I'm ever back in Ames, Iowa, I'll definitely stop by to buy a bunch to bring back to NYC! read more

What a cool place! Very interesting and fun! There was a man playing the piano and taking requests when we were there. There is multiple types of seating, such as a cozy sofa, coffee table and arm chair, several tables with chairs, and several arm chairs with drink tables. There were many different types of chocolate to choose from and they were all beautiful! I ended up having vanilla gelato and a latté. Very yummy! They also have a few fun gifts also. My girlfriend and I stopped here to beat the heat with some gelato and we instantly fell in love with the place. We were greeted by a beautiful young woman and elderly man playing the piano and couldn't get over how quaint it was. The chocolates all looked charming and delicious, and we ate the lemoncello gelato and peach together, as well as the cinnamon roll and caramel macchiato. okay. this place is truly a hidden gem. it's typically quiet so it makes the perfect study spot. the only reason i'm not giving it 5 starts is because i wiiiish they had comfy seating. they only have tables and chairs. no booths or couches so that's a bummer but otherwise great vibes. i've tasted several of their chocolates and haven't been disappointed. the cashier informed me that the best deal was to buy 5 so i did. i will say, it is a bit pricey so that also keep that in your back pocket. their coffee drinks are regularly priced but i went with a hot chocolate because i figured they should have the best in town. it was pretty good. i usually order coffee at coffee shops so i don't have much to compare it to. while we were in, the owner stopped by and chatted with us for a bit which was so sweet. he is a very nice man and ultimately made this visit in much more special. overall, i like Stam's for their environment. it's homey and cozy and just a treat to stop in and hang for a bit. read more

The weird thing about my memory of this shop is that I don't remember walking up to it or ever having the intention of going. I just remember being in the entrance way and looking questioningly at my boyfriend, the words "this looks like a tearoom" escaping my mouth of their own accord. He regarded me with a nod and a smile, and together we perused the assortment of delectables. Sadly, I cannot comment as to the quality of their drinks or their gelato. I'd just eaten an awesome sandwich with a giant mug full of Earl Grey and my stomach rebelled against the idea of stuffing much more in to it. My heart and brain didn't care, though, when my eyes settled on the words "tea truffle". I had room for a little piece of chocolate, right? Of course I did; It was TEA chocolate! Who turns down either of those things even when they're separate, let alone combined together in to one lump of awesome? People who don't like them, that's who... and I happen to not be one of those people. So, to make a long story short, I had the tea truffle. Dan had the rum truffle, I believe - which is a beautiful commentary on the differences between he and I. I imagine us sitting in our parlor one day, him sipping a cup of brandy in a smoking jacket, and me with my dainty cup of perfectly steeped English Breakfast. We lived that dream partly as we moved to the two chairs in front of the shop's little fireplace and sampled our chocolates together. Also by "partly" living the dream, I meant not even slightly. In any case, we both agreed on the deliciousness of our treats. I didn't try his, but I definitely got the distinct taste of black tea out of mine. Either that was quality, or power of suggestion. Pretty cool that Ames is included in the company of Amsterdam and Utrecht with a Stam location. This is a elegant and sophisticated retail location in downtown Ames. I like to stop in here to pick up treats for my wife. They have a large selection of chocolates (stateside candies are made by Iowans off-site) and some very good gelato. It's fun to be able to walk down the counter and assemble a box of a wide variety of chocolates. It tends to lean on the expensive side, a couple of small gelatos and a handful of chocolates will run you over $20. There are some really nice difficult to find imported candies from French and Holland as well. A nice place to wrap up a date with a dessert or grab a box of goodies. read more

You just can't get bonbons like these in most places. Yes, they are more expensive that a basic cream but they are superior and well worth it. The bonbons are molded chocolates, filled with fresh whipped cream and other flavors, like berries or caramel. Divine! The chocolate itself is excellent. On my last visit we also had large coffees...as in 20 ounce ceramic mug large! We enjoyed our coffee and chocolates while listening to two excellent pianists. read more

Besides the awesome selection of chocolates and gelato, this cozy place has a live piano player on Saturdays from 1 to 5 p.m. Ken Jolls, a well known vibraphonist, from years gone by, is self taught at the piano and plays a huge selection of the good old songs from the 30s to the present. The place has small tables and other seating groupings. I prefer one of the tall stools right at the piano. Free wireless connection. Smoothies, hot chocolate and coffee are on the menu. What a lovely experience I had in this Stam's chocolate shop! My boyfriend and I had time to spare while taking a walk on Main Street in Ames. I was really wanting a coffee and pulled this place up on my Yelp app. It's like stepping into a European chocolate shop! They have chocolates, gelatos, and coffee. I decided not to get any chocolates and Im quite disappointed in myself for that decision. However, I opted for their cafe mocha which was divine and silky. A perfect blend. Luckily, I did get to try some chocolate as I asked if they had any samples. Yes! You must ask because they keep a plate of the chocolates that get broken behind the counter and they will let you sample from those! I hope I can go back someday! read more

I'm definitely not a chocolate connoisseur, but I have sampled a fair share of chocolates from mercilessly expensive chocolatiers in NYC and boy, do I wish there was a branch of Chocolaterie Stam back home. They offer average prices for their chocolates, but if you buy 5+, it's a little more than a buck a chocolate! I've only sampled 3 of their chocolates since I had an amazing dinner beforehand and had to run to reach them before their closing time. A fun, unexpected stop to this little gem left us wanting more. We had mocha frappes that were delicious. I have read many of the reviews and I understand that the chocolate may be exclusive and the best which explains why it's so expensive. However I must express my experience there. I was walking down Main Street with my 18 month old niece on a very hot day. I decided to stop here to buy her a piece of chocolate to keep her going and happy. I mentioned to the worker that I wanted a small piece of chocolate for her (hoping it wouldn't cost a lot). I picked out a tiny heart filled with peanut butter and was completely shocked when I was charged over $2.00 for it. Right after I paid, I noticed there were chocolate coins near the register for 35 cents each. I wish the worker would have pointed that out to me first as that's all she really needed. However there was a nice man (customer) that gave us $1.00 to spend. I most likely will never stop here again. I just don't feel right about spending that much money for a small piece of chocolate. read more

The best chocolates and gelato in town! The prices are a little bit higher than other chocolate shops on main street but definitely worth it. They have a huge selection of flavors and you can get nearly every piece in milk or dark chocolate and a few in white chocolate. The best deal is to get a few or several pieces in a small box as that way you are charged by weight. You tend to pay a little bit extra for useless packaging when purchasing their specific box sizes (1/2 lb, 1 lb, etc). I've only tried the gelato once the first week they had it but I can't wait to try it again. Some of my favorite chocolates are the white chocolate cream mouse and the milk chocolate forest berry. This is also a great place to stop in mid-day with a friend for a few pieces of chocolate and an excellent cup of coffee! read more

They're made in Des Moines by real people, with real ingredients, and in quasi traditional european style. Their gelato is flavorful, and they give samples with free goodwill. I usually opt for coffee, a decent fragrant roast. The best part of the experience is the store. Go there in person. Lounge awhile over a few chocolates and play some board games. Read a book.
