NEW AND IMPROVED According to some of my sketchy sources (jk just my roommate) Morning Bell just remodeled their cafe in Downtown Ames, so I went there to check it out. The "new" Morning Bell has white wall and huge windows with daylight light-bulbs. It gives off a very natural pleasant feeling whilst sitting and studying. The cold-brew was great. Gloomy cold winter days call for great coffee! My Brother in Law and I share an appreciation for good coffee. He was visiting from San Diego (great coffee city!) and I knew I needed to bring him here. They had a ton of great flavors! I opted for the cookie butter breve YUMM!!! The place was full of customers but the ONE girl working welcomed everyone warmly, didn't rush people ordering, and gave attention to each person. When the half and half for my drink didn't look quite right to her she let me know before remaking my drink that it would be a little bit longer. I wish this place has some more seating. At 8am all tables/chairs were called for and with 2 people and a baby in a car seat we had to take drinks to go. My brother in law was so impressed we came back the next day, we order the Austin it was delicious! read more

When I step in to Morning Bell I always feel the batista truly care that I get my caffeine fix, haha. The staff is always friendly, safe and so caring. I usually get "The Austin", the "Matcha" with honey, or a cortadito - they're never more expensive than it should be and it's always better than the other coffee chains. They have all different milk accommodations and many local flavors you can add to your beverage. They never use ice for a colder beverage, but that just means more coffee! This is a place where I am proud to go to, and I'm proud to recommend this place to my friends, family, and out-of-towners. Morning Bell -- known to some as ~the bell~ -- is the best coffee shop in Ames. they roast their own beans in house and serve beautifully handcrafted coffee beverages. they also have dairy alternatives such as soy, almond and oat milk with no up charge [the way the Lord intended]. if you're looking for a place to sit and grind out some homework, this is the place for you. the minimalistic interior creates the perfect, low distraction environment to get things done. at times it can get a bit noisy if the place is filled, they're grinding the beans and playing music. however, a pair of headphones and a lofi beats playlist is the solution. even when it gets noisy, it only lasts a moment and the music is very unobtrusive. another detail worth highlighting is the bathroom experience. there are two, very clean, gender neutral rooms that are stocked with nice smelling soap. all in all, if you find yourself downtown Ames, stop by Morning Bell. actually... it's worth making a special trip for. read more

I can't get over the no ice. I get not wanting to water down drinks, but it's just odd, like room temp coffee. (Barista also seemed annoyed to have to explain that to me) My 12 espresso drink was also $8 which was...surprising. I was stoked by all the reviews, but I like my coffee cold and they just don't offer that. I got mine to go so I can't speak for the space/atmosphere, but it's a nicely updated space with communal seating. TLDR: Good coffee, no ice, minimal seating, modern white clean look, clean (coed) bathrooms, friendly helpful staff, minimal, unfortunate parking, productive seating, good for to go coffee. After outstanding reviews I chose to venture to this shop praised by most Ames coffee specialists (mostly college students). I was a little shocked, but not necessarily disappointed. Coffee: Watery espresso, they weigh at 16 grams and dial in the shots to taste good. Had good flavor just no body to it. It felt like the la croix of espresso. I also ordered a drink similar to what most shops would call an iced mocha. The issue here is that there is no ice in this building. The drink I received was more a chocolate milk with espresso, pretty good! Their drinks were satisfactory, nothing to keep me away! Atmosphere: There is minimal seating and only 1-2 staff members per shift. Not the fastest service but also not the busiest coffee shop. If you're looking for a study spot, this location will more than likely be filled with busy students or young adults. Very clean setting and modern white everything. Not the coziest spot, but for sure a productive one. I wish it wasn't such a hike for free parking. Staff: Very friendly! wanted my experience to be as best as possible. I was guided through their menu very well and his explanations were thorough. He was eager to hear how I liked my drinks and took criticism well. I love this coffee. I am typically a no frills black coffee, good black coffee, but no fancy sweeteners girl. At morning bell I order a chai latte but a dirty chai latte which means there is a shot of espresso in my tea latte. It is not too sweet which means I dont have the sugary, fuzzy teeth feeling all day. One person I work with drives 40 minutes to Ames to purchase these roasted coffee beans. The location is nice and bright but sterile with not a lot of seating. I wish they would relocate to the floor of the old sheldon munn hotel on main street. That space would be a great vibe for this fabulous coffee. read more

Wow, so much coffee on one street! Main Street in Ames has got it going on for coffee! This new (to me) addition is just fab! Morning Bell is tucked down a long hall way, through an entrance on the north east side of main street. It's worth finding! I was there on Saturday for Maximum Ames Music Festival as they were hosting small shows here! The coffee shop is really modern and sleek. The staff was super nice and welcoming! The place smells amazing even with smelly touring musicians filling it up! And I love a place that has cold brew taps, ready to roll for your coffee drinking needs! It was a really cozy spot to watch some live music, snag a drink, and enjoy the community that is rich in coffee and art! My son enjoyed one of the pastries here as well! Morning Bell has the best coffee in Ames, and it is not particularly close. I am a huge coffee fan, love going to cafes, and am a self-proclaimed coffee connoisseur. If you are a fan of good coffee, you will love Morning Bell. They have awesome single origin coffee, roasted in-house, and clearly brewed with care by their friendly baristas. The coffee is nicely extracted, pretty high levels of acidity with hints of tropical fruits and very little body--so delicious. My only "complaint" is that I wish they had a little bit bigger space to hang out but the space they do have has a great clean, modern design. Possibly the best coffee spot in Ames! The hallway from previous reviews is no more. Morning Bell is now right on Main Street with huge windows that let in the sunshine. It's minimal and modern inside. So pretty! The drinks are amazing! I've stopped by twice with a different barista each time. There is no upcharge for oat milk and they have house made syrup. WOO! I got a decaf vanilla latte with oat milk for $5 even. That would cost about $1.50 more elsewhere in town. And it was delicious! It ia conveniently in central Ames. Parking was available both times. Morning bell is one of the top coffee/tea places in Ames in my opinion. The Alex and Nitro Chai are the best cold and hot drink options I think. They also let you exchange milk for non dairy options at no charge. There are tables to study at in the shop and lots of plants and art on the walls. Good atmosphere. read more

Okay, first and most important--the coffee is amazing! I'm a cream-and-sugar person, but I liked this coffee without putting anything in it. That's a big deal. Their prices are beyond reasonable. $4 for a large latte? Good luck finding that elsewhere. (And they use Picket Fence Creamery milk, which is the best.) They sell cold brew coffee in glass bottles. It's the neatest thing, and you musssst go check it out of you enjoy iced coffee. So good. I tried some tea because the owner was giving out free samples. Normally, I'm not a tea drinker. After trying this place's tea, I'm reassessing: It was that good! This is the type of place you can go if you really appreciate coffee the way some folks appreciate wine--OR if you want a good, solid, reasonably priced cup of coffee or tea. It really does hit the mark for both of those "types." Reminds me of San Francisco, but at Iowa prices and with Iowa-friendliness-level owner and staff. Love this place already! I usually go to Cafe Diem when I'm Downtown Ames, but today I thought I would try something different. (For the record I love Cafe Diem and highly recommend them, too). Morning Bell Roasting Co. hasn't been round long, but in the short time they've been here I think they've got quite a following, since I went in in a Monday morning and the place was pretty busy. This place seems popular with people who are my age (39) and older, though students would also enjoy the laid-back coffeehouse atmosphere. The coffee is roasted and brewed on-site, making it the freshest possible coffee Downtown. The roast I sampled was a dark roast, I believe it was an Ethiopian Yirgacheffe if I remember right. For a dark roast it was smooth while not at all bitter. When the weather warms up I'm coming in to try some of their cold brews since a lot of people say those are great. No real complaints, just a goid cup of coffee at a decent price. Friendly coffeehouse atmosphere and great staff. I'll be back! read more

In Ames and need coffee? This is the place to be! I've tried quite a few coffee shops around the cities I've lived in over the years, but this one is by far the best I've ever had! The espresso flavor in a large latte is strong, not not overpowering, and you really can taste the flavor they went for when roasting it. Okay, first off, I feel a bit like I'm cheating on Vinyl Cafe by writing this, because for my 1 years in Ames, that has been the coffee palace for my husband and I. But, there is no denying that Morning Bell has done something so incredibly right. They are also different enough from Vinyl that they can both have a special place in my coffee heart without any damage. lol. Yes, I am serious about my coffee. What makes Morning Bell so great? Well, it's a combination of quality of product and personalization of it as well. I usually don't care if there are few choices as long as the coffee is good. Actually, in many coffee places, more choices means more non-coffee additions that take away from the glorious bean and its magic. That is not the case here. They have so much choices that the few times I have been there so far they start out by asking what kind of coffee I like and then match it to what they have in shop that day. Today I had a Mexican bean (I did not ask the region, which I am kicking myself for cause it was amazing and I def want it again!) in an aeropress. I have had hohum aeropress experiences to date but this combination changed that forever. It was rich, smooth and bitter-I was in heaven. I have also had espresso, a few sips of my husband's ice brew and such. Their space is very light and airey, and the staff are super nice and inviting. There are a few comfy chairs near the window and then a long, gorgeously made long, wood table in the other sitting area. I have lounged, played Bananagrams and today, just stopped in for a to go cup. I can not recommend them any more highly. Go, go now and go often. And thank you to the owner for adding to the coffee culture here in Ames. Spending a lot of time in cities where coffee nerds are becoming more and more spoiled (myself included), it is nice to see that kind of quality oriented behavior in a small town as well. read more

The coffee is serious. That's all you really need to know. But if you want more... The place is a little hard to find. The Yelp map shows the correct location. There is a small storefront sign and they had a small folding sign on the sidewalk as well which helped. You enter the front door and go down a very unassuming hallway. Then you enter the shop. It's clean and fairly empty looking except for a few tables, mounds of bags of coffee beans, and the bar. We arrived at 8am on a Tuesday morning. They opened at 7. There were four or five other people inside sitting at tables drinking coffee flights (3 types or pours, or teas, for $7)- such a fun idea! They had two types of roasts available. After tasting two cold brew nitros on tap, along with a delicious cinnamon rooibos tea, I settled on the choco-floral beans. My other option was a Guatemala. The owner roasts the beans himself and roasted these choco beans yesterday! I opted for the pour-over method, but they offer to prepare the coffee one of four ways. Topped it with a little half and half which it definitely didn't need, but I'm addicted to the creaminess. 16oz for $4. 10000x better than Starbucks (and I enjoy Starbucks so that says a lot). As for food, there were a few tiny homemade baklava bars but that was it. A few other options would have been nice, but I was so happy with the coffee that breakfast was an afterthought. I could see them having more food options in order to attract more customers, especially college students coming here to study. Five stars for the coffee and friendly, un-rushed service. read more
