Someone at Culver's HQ has some really good ideas! I don't recommend the skittles in concrete mixer(got it at another Culver's, because they ordered the wrong thing-it wasn't good), but the skittles in the cooler is awesome. That's what I was driving through to get. But, they had the new cereal concrete mixers in a 3 pack mini "flight". If you like cereal, get this. It definitely brought me back to my childhood. They have CocoPuffs, LuckyCharms and CinnamonToastCrunch concrete mixers and all were good. I tried 'em, so you could decide or not to buy 'em. Lot parking. Friendly staff. Went through the drive-through while I had my entire family waiting at the hospital we got our drinks and they were all incorrect. We were missing three we finally got our food got back to the hospital and every single order was incomplete wrong and we were missing items, completely disappointed in their service. read more

I visited on an extremely busy Sunday early afternoon, and they performed incredibly well, like a well-oiled machine! The store was clean and not chaotic, and the server (Register 1, 1PM) was an exceptional guy, smiling and pleasant despite his busy surroundings. Don't know how to follow directions got order completely wrong honestly almost threw up

I was running errands with my 93 year-old Dad last week. After a trip to 2 banks, plus shopping for cat food/litter and other supplies at Walmart, I wasn't quite ready to take him home. A suggested a stop at the American Legion (he's a Vet) for a couple adult beverages, but instead we agreed to stop at Culvers for the 2:1 cement mixer special. You get a lot of frozen custard for your money here and even more so when there's a special. My choice of vanilla ice cream with hot fudge and cookie dough bits added in, was perhaps a little too chocolaty. Dad's choices were similar, but with a lighter touch. And we both finished. On a weekday Winter afternoon, we pretty much had the place to ourselves. There was an "older" guy across the aisle pecking at his iPhone, of which Dad bemoaned his lack of digital skill. After Dad wandered off to the bathroom, that guy explained (with no prompt) that he was filling out an online form and ended up having to call that company's office and straighten it out. I guess the point is that digital skill isn't the end all and it always pleases me about the chatty (and sometimes revealing) conversations one finds when I'm back in Iowa. read more

My favorite "fast food" restaurant in the Ames area. Always quality food and nice service. They have a classic midwestern feel with lots of good beef and real cheese. Inside- Kept nice and clean and looks newly remodeled. Plenty of booths and table for various sized groups. Staff- Always looks like a lot of people are working, drive thru is attended and people are served quick. Food- I like to get kids meals because they are only $5 and you get custard! I also enjoy their concrete mixers, cheese curds, pretzel bites, and root beer floats! BEWARE! FOOD POISONING!!!! I would give Culver's in Ames a -10 if that was a choice. Unfortunately, it was not an option. My husband and I ate dinner at C ulver's in Ames. I had a kids meal with chicken tenders and coleslaw, and he had fish and french fries. Within hours of eating there, I started to feel sick. I developed dizziness, nausea, and diarrhea. By the next morning, I had explosive diarrhea, great fatigue, horrible stomach pain, and joint pain. I am a nurse practitioner, retired, and knew that these symptoms were from contaminated food. I was not ill before eating at Culver's! My husband was not ill bur he did not eat the coleslaw. I suspected that the cause was the coleslaw and that someone who worked at Culver's went to the bathroom, had a bowel movement, and returned to make the coleslaw without washing their hands. I became more and more ill and subsequently went to see my physician early the next morning. My blood pressure was extremely low, I was cold and clammy, and by that time, I also had blood in my stools. My physician ordered lab tests which confirmed that my white blood count was elevated. This would indicate an infection. He also ordered a Cat Scan, which showed that I had infectious colitis, which I am sure was caused by the coleslaw. My physician confirmed that as did the radiologist who read my Cat Scan.. My phsician prescribed pain medication, nausea medication, and 2 antibiotics for 10 days, and told me if my condition worsened, I should go to the emergency room. I decided that the responsible thing for me to do was to call Culver's and speak to the manager about this issue. I used to have my own business and would have wanted to know if there were problems affecting other people so that I could correct them. I spoke to the manager, told him the problem, and he immediately asked me what other restaurant we had eaten at. I told him that Culver's was the only place we had eaten at away from home. He then went on at length that their policy was that their employees wash their hands after using the bathroom; further, that they then put on plastic gloves and only then make the coleslaw. I told him that I did not believe he could follow all his employees into the bathroom and watch them wash their hands or observe all his employees while they were making coleslaw, and obviously someone had not followed their policy or I would not be so ill. Furthermore, I told him that he apparently cared more about making excuses, explaining his policies and denying that this happened and. I told him the test results, and he put me on hold. When he continued the call, he again made excuses and went on about his policies and said there was nothing he could do about this and he did not believe that one of his employees did not follow protocol. I told him that I was not expecting him to do anything for me, that I was just calling because I thought he would want to know about this problem. Further, I ended the call by telling him that he was obviously more interested in making excuses and denying the problems they were having than finding out that he had a serious problem on his hands. I then told him I was hanging up, which I did. After my phone call with the manager I realized that Culver's in Ames has more serious problems that the coleslaw. In my opinion, their manager needs an extensive course in dealing with people!!! Lyn W. read more

I have been in love with Culver's ever since my husband first introduced me in December of 2011. I had just moved from California and had my first taste of Wisconsin cheese curds and the wonderful Caramel Cashew Concrete Mixer. The best part was my delicious butter burger. My husband then asked me if I liked In N' Out or Culver's better. I told him they're so different they just can't be compared. Today I had their Crispy Chicken Sandwich with tomato, mayo and extra lettuce. I always ask them to cut my sandwiches in half and they're always happy to do so. The chicken is always cooked to crispy perfection. Dessert was two scoops of creamy vanilla custard with hot caramel. My husband had the mushroom and swiss burger with a side of onion rings and a root beer. Next time he's going to ask for extra mushrooms. We have been to this location several times. The service is usually okay/decent. However, during this visit we were hardly acknowledged. Finally, a girl reluctantly came to the register to help us. Watched an employee named Lucas wipe the excess ice cream off the cup of the malt he was making with his fingers and then lick them. When that didn't do the job, he licked the cup itself! When I refused to accept the malts and demanded they be remade, he was extremely RUDE and admitted to licking his fingers! The food was great. I had a crispy chicken sandwich with 5 small bowls of ketchup. Not to cover up the great chicken flavor by any means! The best part was that my friend and I were invited in 40 minutes before the scheduled opening on a sunday. And, the server came to our table and asked if we wanted any more food. Two Times - Too Many! I took my mother for a little outing from the nursing home & decided to get her a Culver's treat. This is the first time I have returned to the Ames location in probably two years since my daughters and I were greeted with insults and rude remarks from the person working the drive through back then. Today I asked for a shake made from the flavor of the day but the employee said they could not make one. I ordered something else but when I got to the window inquired if Culver's changed how they make shakes because ordering the daily flavor had never been an issue before. The staff member working the window said they could not make a shake with the daily feature because pieces may get stuck in the straw and I might have to use a spoon to eat part of it. What difference it makes to them how a customer chooses to drink or eat what they order is a wonder. Our family frequently stops at other Culver's locations and has never had bad service. I don't understand the issues with drive up staff at the Ames, Iowa location but I do know we will not be return customers. read more
