This place was great. An absolute closet of a restaurant (although they do have seating inside AND out on the sidewalk), but that's irrelevant; the food and value were exemplary. Strolled in after the lunch rush, was greeted right away, and skimmed the menu for a minute. It's pretty straightforward and delineated well, but I later found there was a discrepancy in pricing between their website and the actual in-store menu. The website menu says a burrito is $7, but in-store, it's listed as 9 bucks, if I remember correctly. I'm realizing now I should've gotten some pictures of it. Sorry, gang; next time. Since I still had some walking to do, I went with the simple corn tortilla taco to go...and got more than I expected. They HEAPED on the meat, boys and girls! A generous amount of asada on my two little tortillas, then they piled my condiments on like they were my grandma who thought I was too skinny. It was glorious; I got basically two LOADED tacos for 3 bucks. My only minor, slight, teeny-tiny disappointment was the relatively scant amount of cilantro on my almost-authentic street tacos. The lime wedge was a fantastic inclusion, and, as I enjoyed my meal by Lake Laverne, I offered that spent citrus crescent to a nearby Canadian goose. He declined my gift. The barbacoa taco with the hot salsa 10/10, carnita taco was ok I'd get 2 barbacoas next time and the quesadilla with chorizo my husband said was very good on flavor. It took me forever to try this place solely due to the name. Could there be a more Americanized inauthentic name for a Mexican restaurant? Sounds worse than "Taco John's". Well yesterday my wife went with a friend and said the taco was pretty good and there were authentic items so I decided to give them a shot for lunch today. My wife and I are both women of color born and raised in Texas so we have extremely high standards for Mexican food. The food here tastes fairly decent. The quality of the items could be better. The food wasn't piping hot and fresh. Des Moines has better Mexican food joints. There are items only found in a Texas taqueria such as lengua (cow tongue) and tripa (pig intestines). The owner is from Puebla, a hour drive from Mexico City and he keeps it real. I wish the guy would've changed the name of the restaurant when he bought it from the previous owner. He's keeping southerners away with that watered down whitewashed name and hideous mascot, though I know it's to keep and appeal to Midwesterners. Don't fear it's too spicy - it's flavorful, not spicy. Unless you're one of those meat and potato kids that can't even handle onions and cilantro and garlic. Anything spicy is all on the side and optional. Other negative is the prices. Back home I can get a torta (sandwich) for $6 or less. Here they're like $8. But I'm sure to get the ingredients in Iowa are more expensive than in Texas. read more

Mr. Burrito is fantastic. Freshman year I lived in right across the street in Friley and there were many late nights spent with Mr. Burrito. The building is very small, making it tough when it is busy and only big enough to fit like two tables so it is better to get it to go. The ladies that work there are super friendly and seem to be passionate about what they do. But most importantly, I think that this is probably the best mexican food in Ames. It has an incredibly authentic feel, they have an awesome assortment of meats to choose from(Asada is my favorite), wonderful mexican rice, and all the other toppings you could want. Just picture a local Chipotle...but infinitely better. This small family-owned business is the real deal. My boyfriend is an alumni of Iowa State, and swore by this place. During the months leading up to my first trip to ISU, he would often mention his love for Mr. Burrito, and how we'd be paying it several visits when we go to Iowa. He honored that promise and Mr. Burrito did not disappoint. Both times we went to Mr. Burrito was right after 2:00am...it can't get much better than fresh, hot Mexican food after bar-close. I opted for 3 corn tortilla tacos each time. The first time, I got a carne asada taco, a carnitas taco, and a barbacoa taco. I discovered that my favorite out of the 3 was barbacoa with carnitas as a close second. The carne asada was great too, but the barbacoa meat was especially tender and juicy. The second night we came, I got the barbacoa taco, the carnitas taco, and al pastor taco. The al pastor was good, but I don't think I would get it a second time. What I love about their tacos is that the tortillas (you can get flour or corn) are fried upon order. A lot of Mexican places don't have piping hot tortillas, but Mr. Burrito makes sure that each one comes out steaming. I also like that you can put as many toppings as you'd like on your taco or burrito. Not only did I get the standard onions, cilantro, and lime, but I loaded mine up with corn, guac, and queso too...YES THEY HAVE DELICIOUS QUESO. Quick service, open late-night until 2:30am from Wednesday-Saturday (they are closed on Sundays), and budget-friendly! While I was in school and even after I was done with school, this was my go to place for lunch probably 4/5 times a week. The food is so good, taste and freshness. I personally for the burrito bowl pretty much every time. The pineapple pork is phenomenal and if you can handle spice the macha salsa is guaranteed to open up your tastes buds. Chips and queso as a side is a must! The queso is really really good! By far the best authentic Mexican food in Ames, family owned as well so it's nice to support local business. Only downside is during rush hours dining in can be difficult, never really bothered me because I always got it to go. And they have coke in the glass bottle. . read more

Back in the day when I went to ISU, this space was a middle eastern place. Awhile ago, a friend of mine in Ames told me the space changed to Mexican and told me it was pretty good. I didn't have a chance to try this until the other day when I was in town for a wedding. Before arrival, I had driven for about 5.5 hours from Chicago and didn't have a lot to eat. I remembered what my friend said, and headed over to Mr. Burrito. Nobody was there, as Ames was pretty dead. Nonetheless, we went there and I ordered two Lengua (that's cow tongue for those of you who don't know) tacos. Corn tortilla, meat, and cilantro. Of course I added a LITTLE bit of cheese and a few jalepenos. It was really delicious. So delicious, I ordered two more even though I would be having a rehearsal dinner two hours later. My friend's Chicken Quesadilia was great too. If you want a good place for AUTHENTIC Mexican, come here. This place is actually very good for being in Ames, IA. Sorry to a reviewer before, but Fighting Burrito is not authentic. A real taco in Mexico would have only meat, corn tortilla, and cilantro. Not even cheese, or very little cheese. I recommend this place, although it might not be for everyone, it's very good from what I tasted and it's inexpensive. I was hesitant when I walked in the door and saw someone new and no customers fearing it was under new ownership. Alas, same owner thank goodness and same delicious food! Though unfortunately at a bit of a price hike since I was last in. On to the review! Mr. Burrito doesn't only make superb burritos, and although strongly tempted to reunite with my beloved banana leaf wrapped tamales I opted to try something else. .... Dear God, I'm in love! Mr. Burrito's tortas are the best I have ever had! The bread is warm and crusty yet soft, the meats tender and succulent and bursting with flavors same as long ago, the toppings and sauces and black bean paste simply the angels of perfection to this massive $6.75 dinner! Normally I wouldn't be able to intake such a large meal, a mexican sandwich larger than my head! But I couldn't help myself, each and every bite just as tantalizingly delicious as the last. First things first, don't bring a big party of people here looking to get burritos. There's probably only 10 chairs total and one table of 4 is the biggest. The restaurant is tiny, I don't think it could hold 15 people. That said, the food is quality. When I first walked in the woman behind the counter - presumably one of the two owners - asked if I'd like to sample the meats. She dished me up a bite of each of the barbacoa, chicken, and pork. That made my decision much easier. I opted for the barbacoa and I wasn't disappointed. It's got plenty of kick but not too much to scare anyone away from eating it. The burritos, by comparison, aren't quite as big as those at Fighting Burrito but they're every bit as good, if not better. Unfortunately they don't offer wild rice, and I feel that's a staple of a good burrito. White rice just doesn't cut it. Bottom line - it's definitely worth trying if you like burritos. read more

I love Mr. Burrito. I lived in Ames two years ago and am about to move back, this time for good. I am so happy to see Mr. Burrito is still in his location on Lincoln way making excellent burritos. I hope he has success for a long time. The owner of Mr. Burrito is a very nice, funny guy who really loves his food and values his customers. Back when I lived on Hayward I was a regular. He remembers your order and preferences and makes great suggestions. I love his barbacoa, chorizo, carnitas, etc. The meat is always fresh and flavorful. The hot sauces are also fantastic! I'm partial to the chipotle sauce but my husband likes the habanero. Other menu items are great as well and his tortillas are always fresh and soft. A refrigerator in the shop has Mexican sodas, a perfect complement to the authentic food. Seating is limited as it's a small shop but you'll always feel like you're dining with family at Mr. Burrito's. Hands down the best burrito spot in Ames. read more

Fresh. Authentic. The food stands out here in very small and modest surroundings. You'll find the most permutations of ingredient combinations here. Really good barbacoa, carnitas. A large choice of protein, beans and toppings. Cilantro and onion, corn relish. Several hot sauces to choose from. Wife had a hefty pork burrito. I had the best torta in Campustown since the first incarnation of Panchero's left in the mid-90s. Enormous. Filling and flavorful. I was pleased that it wasn't overly salted. I was able discern many of the subtle flavors without being overwhelmed by salty meat. Tacos, burritos and tamales (although they were plum-out when I wanted one). I am not a fan menudo, buche or other organ meat based items. But I applaud the fact that they're available here. This adds to the cultural depth of offerings in campus town beyond the ostensible Americanized favorites. You know that they're doing it the same way they would back in the old country right here in Ames. The place is really small and things seem to move slowly here. We were the only patrons at the the time of our visit, but I could see seating and serving times being an issue at busier times. One of the best options in Ames for a burrito. A real competitor. But I'll be back again for the great selection of authentic meats, toppings and that awesome large Mexican torta sandwich. read more

The burritos are super good - so good that I haven't even bothered to try the much more popular Fighting Burrito around the corner. $5.75 isn't bad price to pay for the quality and amount of food you get, either. The staff is really nice and you can tell they're dedicated to what they do. The place used to be owned by another guy who had some great employees, but as far as I know the current owner only works with his family. My favorite part about Mr. Burrito is that I can get a chorizo burrito.....yum!!! My only irk about Mr. Burrito is that the prices can get a little high, but it's not a huge deal. the new burrito spot in Ames! Like Mark B. said yes it's a small spot, but who cares as long as they keep on dishing out good food. I've had the burritos, tacos, pozole, menudo, tortas and tacquitos. All have been above average compared to the "Mexican" food restaurants in IA. I can't wait to try some of other stuff on the menu. I do disagree with Mark B. on the rice thing. Real Mexican burritos don't have rice or veggies, cheese, lettuce, pico de gallo. A real Mexican burrito is about half the size of what is served in most restaurants and only has the meat and beans. money! They just changed ownership a few weeks ago and modified some of their recipes. I think the new owners are the same owners of AJ's liquor store if you're familiar with campus town.
