He told me to go look in the cooler when I bent down and search in the cooler for an orange Mexican soda I hit my head and asked him if he even knows if there's any in there?? O M G, is this place delicious. This is the kind of place where you would want to come again the next day and then the next. Went out yesterday in Ames with the intent to try the food truck, Rico's Tacos. Unfortunately, Rico had other ideas. Drove to his usual spot and could only find a "CLOSED" sign. Dejected but undaunted, I doubled back on my route to Duff Ave., where I found Tacos El Primo set up in the parking lot of Ames Tire Shop. Right off the bat, I was impressed; they had picnic table seating for customers, WITH an awning overhead! Now that we're reaching the really hot part of the year, that little detail is greatly appreciated. Not only that, but as I walked up, the staff was immediately sanitizing the tables that had just vacated by some customers. Another greatly appreciated aspect. I looked over the menu and found pretty much what you'd expect from a taco truck. Nothing really popped out as strange or exotic, and that was perfect; I just wanted some standard, solid, taco truck fare. One thing they DID have that caught my eye was birria options. I'd heard of it before, but had never tried it, so this was clearly kismet. I placed my order--one regular taco and the Mega Quesabirria--and was given a pager. Rare for Iowa in August, it was a beautifully sunny, yet mild, day, with frequent cool breezes under that canopy, as I waited for my order. And I didn't have to wait long at all. The paper basket I was handed was delightfully heavy, my friends. Included with my food were two different sauces of varying heat, my cup of birria consomme, a roasted jalapeno (I think), two lime wedges, and some grilled onions lining the bottom. It was very nice, and stacked/presented beautifully. And that birria sauce is magic! Not only does it add some incredible, rich flavor, but a spoonful of the consomme quelled the heat from those hot sauces in no time. As for my food, well, my dinky regular taco wasn't half bad, and had a wonderful amount of cilantro on it. The birria quesadilla, though--I think the analytical part of my brain powered down when it hit my tongue; my mind went from "scrutinize" to "devour" after the first bite. It was incredible and I didn't want it to end. I wouldn't be honest if I didn't include my disappointment at the size of my $2.50 taco. I don't know if the photo does it justice or not, but it was TINY. The taste was fine but, compared to the value of what was on the menu and the other part of my order, that widdo baby taco was overpriced by at least a dollar. There are many taco trucks in Ames, but I have to say as a native Texan this one is the most legitimate! They even have fresh agua fresca! The horchata is my favorite. This is fresh, tastes just like Mexico because its homemade Mexican. Glorious scents, spices, and flavors. Those men are in that truck working their behinds off delivering. They do have the kind of authentic tacos you are looking for (cilantro y cebolla with all the basic meat options) but what they really specialize in is birria. I'm used to "birria" meaning goat, but here it apparently means brisket: I'm here for it. The first time around I was a little disappointed because they didn't have the consommé they normally serve with birria tacos. Went the other night and they did and I was delighted. Not your average consommé: rich in flavor and spices (even herbal) and a perfect complement to the tacos. I saw others dipping but I'm afraid of big messes (despite loving tacos which are a little messy anyway). Anyway, the birria tacos are what they specialize in so make sure to try them. It's what sets them apart from any other taco truck I have tried in my limited experience with them: being only one man, I have only tried a fraction of the world's taco trucks. read more

In my quest to try every burrito ever, Tacos El Primo was the next stop on the list. I ordered the steak burrito as that is my standard baseline test. In all honesty, I wasn't too impressed. I wanted to like the place, I really did. The burrito was overly dry, the meat uninspiring, and the ingredients too separated. I wouldn't write off the truck entirely based on this one experience, but I would advise going elsewhere if it's a burrito you're looking for. read more

Tacos el primo have the BEST authentic street tacos in all of Ames, Iowa! I highly recommend al pastor tacos (both the chicken & pork!) They come with an extra tortilla, cilantro, onion & lime wedge! So much flavor! My SoCal heart is so appreciative I can find Al pastor in Iowa! Also, they are reasonably priced! My husband loves their quesobirra tacos and consome! Chef's kiss! Perfection! Their service is quick, friendly and professional! They give a pager so you can wait in your car until your food is ready. Which is super nice in this winter weather! They are a taco truck, but they are the BEST taco truck in Ames! They're located in a parking lot across from The Dollar Tree and right next to Overflow, you can't miss them!
