Studio Raw is insane. It doesn't belong in the suburbs of Pittsburgh. It belongs in a loft in New York. The people here are totally wacky. There is a grand piano in the middle of the salon. There is always a box of wine in the refrigerator. (If you are judging, let me ask you--does your hair stylist serve you wine, out of a box or not? Didn't think so. Besides, Franzia is the shit.) Dan and his "Raw Hog" studio friends run around Pittsburgh prank-calling people and videotaping themselves crashing events. They are also first-class, stand-up individuals that put on great fundraisers to raise lots of money for things like cancer research and cystic fibrosis. They also do great hair. And makeup. And pedicures, and Botox, whatever you want. You will always leave Studio Raw looking, and more importantly, feeling like a million bucks. If Studio Raw were my fifth grade crush and they passed me a note in class that said "Do you like me??, check a box, [ ] yes or [ ] no," I would check YES. I like you, Studio Raw. I'm not impressed. There are a lot of bells and whistles at this salon, but the service was subpar. I have long, straight hair and needed a cut and some layers. She barely cut any off even though I stressed I wanted it shorter. She applied a ton of product before asking if it worked for me. I won't waste my money there again. Oh, and don't offer drinks if you are going to rush the client to the chair. I showed up early to relax a bit and felt rushed in and out. I could get that at supercuts. read more

I've been using the same stylist since I was 15 or 16 years old. I've followed her to a few different salons throughout her career and she's been at Studio Raw for a few years now. They recently opened a new studio after their original place burned down. The new studio is amazing. There's so much space. There's a kitchen fully stocked with beverages, including water, wine, beer, pop, and juice. There's also always snacks and Kimmy Cupcakes delivers baked goods like cupcakes and cookies for the studio every day. There's a large wrap around deck with chairs and tables for you to sit at while your hair processes and there are seating areas inside with televisions and tons of magazines. With the new studio, they also offer a ton of improved and new services like nails, spa services, waxing, botox, massages, and a man cave in the downstairs for mens cuts. I think everyone should come to Studio Raw at least once to just check it out. read more

I want to give Studio Raw 10 stars! I am so incredibly happy that I found this amazing salon in the North Hills. I've spent years paying overpriced stylists in the East End of Pittsburgh who really didn't give me haircuts/styles that I loved or that made me feel fantastic when I left the salon. In fact, I had been asking my previous stylist for 2 years to give me a couple of pink streaks in my hair and she always conveniently forgot or found a way to talk me out of it, so imagine how thrilled I was when I went to my first appointment at Studio Raw with Jenna and she not only gave me an amazing, easy to care for and stylish cut but gave me beautiful highlights and a streak of pink in a semi-discreet area so that I could test drive it before committing to more and I absolutely LOVE it!!! I haven't loved my hair this much since I moved back from Portland, OR in 2006!! I highly, HIGHLY recommend Jenna though I'm certain that you couldn't go wrong no matter with whom you schedule an appointment! I love the openness of the space and how welcoming all of the staff are to their customers - they have a great lounge area and free coffee and pastries to boot! I also scheduled a pedicure with Brittany while I was there. She is equally amazing and hilarious as Jenna and did an amazing job on my feet and was great about making the necessary accommodations for a medical condition that I have. She treated me with such care and made my feet feel and look beautiful! The best thing about supporting/patronizing Studio Raw is the fact that they give back to the community. They are constantly helping others in need particularly causes/charities related to children. This company not only treats their clients (and staff) well, but they give back to the community that supports them and that makes me want to give them my exclusive business. Also, the prices at Studio Raw are significantly less than the other salons I've patronized in the past AND the services are even better than anything that I've experienced in the last 9 years in Pittsburgh! Let's talk about what an amazing experience I had here! I walk in for the first time and boom they give me a tour of the whole place. My stylist gave me THE BEST consultation I've ever had!! My color turned out perfect and my cut pow pow. I'm on fire! The only thing negative I have to say is that it took a REAAAAALY long time. I was there over 3 hours. Love the modern look. I found this place because my mother (who does live in the area) was sick of her old place giving her not quite what she wanted and a heavy dose of their world views. I saw Gina at Studio Raw. I asked for a very angled cut and showed 3 pictures of exactly what I was requesting. I was extremely hesitant as she was the 5th stylist I had gone to for this cut. All of the previous had said they could do it and butchered it. She assured me she could...aaaand then butchered it. As in embarrassed to go out in public butchered it. I also got a partial one color highlight which is looks ok, but cost $115. Seriously?!? I really wish stylists would just be honest about what their limits are. My hair looks awful and is too short to "fix". So I am stuck with this Edward Scissorhands mess that I spent in total almost $200 for. read more

Studio RAW is a gem in the North Hills. I agree with other reviewers that it could totally be a salon in a more bustling metropolitan area, like NYC or Philly. They offer every service under the sun (hair, color, nails, massage, spray tan, facials, makeup, wax, etc.) So far, I have only tried the nail salon part of the spa, but I am oh-so-eager to try more very soon! I found this salon when I had out of town guests and we decided on short notice that we wanted to get pedicures on a Saturday afternoon. There were 3 of us and with ~24 hour notice, I thought for sure we were destined for a cheapy nail place where you worry about fungus. I called Studio Raw after reading the reviews and they fit all three of us without any problem. Since then, I've been back multiple times. All of the nail technicians are amazing and they all have quite the following. Myra is amazing at nails and you can tell she is determined to give you the best service you've ever had. And she exceeds my expectations everytime. No nicking of the cuticles, no messy polish, just perfect nails and goodbye nasty calluses! Don't worry if you're in a rush and forget to eat before you get there as they have plenty of delicious snacks like cupcakes, bananas, and other munchies along with tasty coffee and adult beverages. What other salon has a huge fridge chockfull of wine for the taking? It's really like you're coming to visit friends than just getting your hair done. This place is the best! Made an appointment for a haircut- I thought I wanted a long bob. Met with my stylist, Amy, who gently talked me out of the long bob cut, which I was worried about anyway. Really I just wanted a change to my hair that would make me look sleek and sophisticated. She did just that! I was so impressed, I have honestly never had a haircut this great before. Ashley was my hairstylist yesterday and she truly listened to me when I asked her if she could help blend in my colors! She gave me a BEAUTIFUL purple black color and I just love it so much - not only that but she evened out my hair and made my hair feel really healthy again - which was a big plus considering that I always had dull hair when I did it myself. When she does my hair (blond highlights and a cut) strangers comment on how great my hair look and ask where I went and who did it. As far as the salon itself, it's very inviting. The front desk staff are very friendly, I've never had a problem making an appointment and there are tons of goodies for a client to enjoy. They have wine, beer, cookies, a popcorn machine, multiple kinds of soda, you name it. Over the years when my husband and I had to go through some rough financial times, my hair was always the first thing to suffer because I wouldn't be able to go to my amazing stylist and buddy Kim. And the cost that she could charge if she wanted to could be much, much higher with the talent and skill she has. Luckily for me, I finally got a raise at work, so Kim and Studio Raw are stuck with me. The salon is very inviting. The staff is friendly. It was my first time there so the receptionist showed me around which was a pleasant surprise. They have a great selection of beverages and snacks available while you're waiting (including beer and wine! ) Jade did my hair. She was great. I had a fantastic first experience here. Allison helped me to embrace my natural color and I absolutely love it. The prices were very reasonable and the atmosphere was fun and relaxed. I was also very impressed by all of the causes they support (they were collecting prom dresses for teens with disabilities when I went). This place is exceeding any expectations I had. The facilities and accommodations are beyond any other place in Pittsburgh. Today I got a manicure done by Brittney and a pedicure by Kim. This had to be one of the best pedicures I have ever had. Kim gave me a tour listing all the services they offer. When I was on my way out I was talking to Sara about getting my hair done. Zero stars. I am a hairstylist and have worked in the industry for 10 years. I was referred to salon raw by a friend because I really need my hair colored before I left for vacation. I was able to get an appointment the day before leaving for vacation with the owner. I wanted what is considered corrective color. The receptionist were not overly friendly. I had to wait past my appointment time. I showed the stylist a picture of what I wanted. She did not seem like she wanted to do my hair at all. She bleached my hair out some and then applied color. I wanted a violet red color. When I left my hair was brassy orange at the root and the rest looked like a muddy mess. Since she didn't seem to care I just paid and left. I also had to go on vacation with my hair like that because there was no time to fix it. Don't waste your time or money. read more

My stylist created perfect hair just like I envisioned, they created a fun atmosphere and had champagne and cup cakes available, and all of bridesmaids looked great. I've been going to Studio RAW for over a year now. My hair is as healthy as it's ever been! I've been going to Carly and she is awesome. I can't say enough good things about her. She's really knowledgeable and very good at educating her clients too so you can do your hair after you leave. The lounge has complimentary snacks and a beverage. I used to love it here but that's the problem, it seems the regulars over time get worse and worse service. Unless the owners are there don't expect anyone to be kind to you. If you don't like your hair you will literally get a shoulder shrug. I hated my color. It was not what was discussed in the slightest and looked awful. My eyes had tears in them and she not only didn't care, she seemed annoyed I didn't like it and there was no offer to fix it. I asked how long it would be to get the horrible color out and she said a few more visits. At over $200 that's not okay. I went to a salon further North soon after and it isn't as 'fun' of an environment but they fixed my color 80% in just one visit and was just $180 with the tip. If you want a fun atmosphere, this is a great place. If you want your hair to be spectacular then don't come here so often that they take you for granted. read more

This is probably the best salon I have ever been to in the Pittsburgh area. I searched for years for a regular salon that was good all around, but never found it until I tried Studio RAW. All of the staff have always been very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. They go the extra mile to make sure you are happy with your service and make sure you are comfortable while you are there. There is coffee, drinks (did somebody say wine?!) and snacks to keep you content while you wait. Nicole is my go-to stylist, but I would not hesitate to try any of the other stylists. When my stylist finished cutting and styling my hair, I was pleased. It wasn't until I styled it myself the next day that I realized the cut was severely uneven. I had a different style on my left and right side: one half of the back of my cut straight and the other half was cut at an angle down towards my chin. I called the salon as soon as I noticed, which happened to be while they were closed. I left a message with my name, number, and explaining what I discovered. I was willing to come any time asap. No one returned my call. Called again the following day without answer. If they would have returned my call, I'd be less upset. Overall disappointed, having someone else correct the cut and I won't be going back. read more

The place is very nice. Love the ambience. I think I got unlucky with the stylist, Nicole. I went to her because she had amazing reviews. But she ruined my side bangs completely. She cut them way too short without a thought and of course couldn't be fixed after it was so short. Even the rest of the cut was pretty bad. I haven't this bad of a haircut for years. I've been waiting for it to grow out so I can get a decent cut! As an update, I got a haircut again here but with Hannah and it was fantastic. Posted pic above. After free 15m color consult with Amy Ellwood, we were assured the color would take and she would be able to replicate the silver lavender color requested. See above pic for bleached out result compliments of Amy. Spoke with Lorraine about correction one week later. Lorraine insinuated I washed hair with non sulfate free shampoo and that's why color didn't hold. Wrong. Please own up to the colorist/salon mistakes. Bottom line. If you mess up, correct it. Say sorry, we'll fix it. Use manners. Be polite. Jenna: thank you for recognizing the color needed to darkened a bit to hold pigment. Told the pigment will fade a bit after a few washes and the silvery lavender we wanted will pull through. I'll post another pic so y'all can be the judge. We've used the salon about five times for various cuts and styles. I'm unsure we'll be heading back and especially think the PR handling by Lorraine was really insulting. Amy should have also recognized the color didn't hold after i questioned her in the salon. She did not. When you're wrong, take responsibility. Especially when you got $210 from our pocket with assurance during color consult that 'you can do it!' I've supported this salon, the team & went to a fundraiser for Rohn where energy and support they have for one another is evident. I support Dan's dream but hey, where there is a flaw, fix it. I'm not a complaint biatch, just someone who came to you for services and am fairly reporting what happened along the way. My advice would be to address it. Step up and address what went wrong and not blame the customer. It was NOT our fault. read more

I went to Raw for several years before I got totally sick of the atmosphere. It can be very loud and stylists can get pretty obnoxious. I don't like people yelling back and forth across the salon. The conversations can get rather innapropriate/unprofessional too. They may think it's funny but it just got to be a serious pain. Getting my hair cut was no longer relaxing and I was tired of the second hand embarassment of seeing adults act like a bunch of raunchy teenagers. Otherwise, my hair was always done pretty well. I got multiple up-dos done and was always very happy with them. If the stylists would've been more professional and seemed more focused on their work I would have stayed. read more

I think I may be in love with Kayla! She listened to exactly what I wanted as far as my cut and color were concerned. She took her time with my color to ensure that it was done beautifully without any weird color deposits. She gave me a gorgeous dark brunette with loads of gold and red highlights and I just adore it! Not to mention the fact that after she cut and dried me, she took the time to curl my hair and teach me how to curl it using a flat iron! The vibe here is fantastic. A very nice kitchen area with loads to drink and eat (love the mini cupcakes). I will say it was kind of a bummer that no one took the time to show me where to hang my coat or where the restroom was. I was shown to the kitchen to wait for my appointment time but it would have been nice if someone had pointed out the restroom and coat rack. I would have loved a cup of tea but couldn't find a tea or coffee cup (only glasses). It was my first visit and I felt like a big goober who didn't know where anything was. But, I was there for the hair, not the tea and Kayla was awesome. I will definitely be back! read more

I'm seeing my hair two weeks after my first cut at Studio Raw; frankly, it's a mess. The young woman who worked with me did just that--she was interested; she listened; she was obviously skilled and she still screwed up. The part I wanted long is too short and the parts that could have been shorter--too long. All this was achieved for the highest price I've ever paid (or tipped) for a haircut. My point here is not that Studio Raw doesn't have great operators--I'm sure it does and my cutter may have been one of them. What I'm saying is that it's quite possible to get what you want at BoRics for $16.00--and I got the best cut of my life in NYC for nearly what I paid at Raw--it's a crap shoot if your operator doesn't know you and what you want. I am so happy that I have finally found a place in Pittsburgh to get high quality hair care. I have been there twice. The first visit was at the temporary space. My second visit was at their new decked out space. The new space is the Mack Daddy of hair salons. Everyone there makes you feel right at home. I lived in New York for many years and I can honestly say that if I hadn't driven up Babcock Blvd. to get there, I would swear I was in the Village in Manhattan. I had so much fun, I forgot I was there to get my hair done! A great atmosphere, which is a direct reflection of the owner, Dan Burda, who had the vision to create this wonderful space. Ive been going to Studio Raw for well over a year now. I was going to the same mall salon before that for well over two years and just wasnt happy with my cut and being talked out of coloring my hair all of the time. I was tired of my hair never looking like the pictures I brought in. I looked at Studio Raw's facebook page all of the time and some of the awesome makeovers being done and thought about going while still going to my same salon and not ever being happy. I felt like Studio Raw would be too expensive but it was the same price as the mall salon I was I decided to go in one day and scheduled a haircut with Nikki James. I am so happy I made the switch! My hair always looks like the pictures I bring in or the way I ask for. I love my color and always changing up my look just a bit to keep it fresh. I am so happy I made the switch. Even though I now drive 45 minutes to get my cut every 5 weeks. I feel so comfortable when at the Studio and they really do cater to you and make you feel at home. Always asking if you need a drink or anything at all. Lorraine the owner always makes time to say hello and chat a bit. Dan is always making you laugh and entertaining you with a song or story. I am so Happy I found Studio Raw and my amazing Stylist there Nikki James. I think it is great how Studio Raw also participates in the community having charity events and fundraisers and throwing awesome parties and raw raves. Absolutely love this place! If you haven't been to Studio Raw, you should check it out, its so beautiful inside, and everyone that works there is very friendly. My stylist is Kristy and she does at great job! I've never been to a salon like this one before, they have a beautiful waiting area and a kitchen that is there for clients to help themselves, they have coffee, tea and other drinks in the refrigerator to choose from. And also they have cupcakes and other snacks, And this is the only salon that I know of that also offers wine, beer and even different mixes if you want to help yourself to a cocktail! I'm originally from southern California and I have tried to find a salon for the last 3 years. So many salons were overpriced and disappointing. Studio Raw, however, delivered exceptional service and care, decent prices for the quality, and friendly staff. My fiance goes there for his haircuts and they are probably the lowest prices in town with the same quality of service. As long as I live in Pittsburgh, I will commute from wherever to have my haircuts and other beauty treatments here. read more
