I have been a very longtime customer (since they opened) of Izzazu Salon in downtown Pittsburgh. I have always enjoyed a great experience with my haircuts there. Recently, I decided not to travel to town. When I found out There was a South Hills Izzazu, I checked it out. I found a super great stylist named Mitzi, she cut and styled my new look exactly the way I asked her. I loved it. So, today was my 2nd appointment with Mitzi. Izzazu Salon in town has always been "the place" to go in downtown Pittsburgh, but I just tried their South location, and it was also fantastic! It's a relaxing atmosphere with nice and friendly staff. Gigi was just AMAZING. I was looking for a color expert, and wow, I found one in Gigi. She has a very high level of technical knowledge and offered great advice and a perfect plan forward to get where I want my hair to be. NOT IMPRESSED. I had a very unfavorsble experience receiving a cut from Gino. He said he could do a cut for me that was like the easy care, no need for extra styling, type cut that he'd demonstrated on a recent TV segment. He cut my hair quickly, focusing chatting with everyone in the salon, rather than me or my hair. Needless to say, i didnt recieve anything like thw cut I'd asked for. Then, he parked me at the stylist station, who spent a full 45 minutes styling my hair, not what I wanted, but not getting the cut I wanted, I figured I'll see what starlin could do. And as soon as I steps outside, all the starling blew out, which is why I didn't want it in the first place. He should have known that about fine hair. And, oddly, I noticed, he changed his tie 3 times while I was there. read more

For "Thankful Thursday", I'm reviewing a great experience that I had at Izzazu Salon! I live in the south hills, so I normally wouldn't book a hair appointment downtown. However, I ran across a great deal on Groupon for a highlight and cut at Izzazu, so decided to check it out! Booking through their website was a breeze, and I was surprised how quickly I was able to schedule my appointment. I came in on a Friday afternoon, and the salon was not overwhelmingly busy. Covid percussions were followed. Sign in required with temperature check, stations were all 6+ ft. Apart, and the hair wash stations even had screens in between them. My stylist wore her mask properly the entire time. Lindsay was my stylist, and I couldn't have been happier with the whole experience. She was an awesome person to talk to, took her time, and made my hair look and feel amazing! There is a parking garage directly below the salon. It was around $12 to park for a few hours. Upon booking via Groupon there are strict instructions that only certain stylists accept the Groupon bookings - Lindsay is one of them. Tip for "Thankful Thursday".. I am a huge fan of a great deal. It's always important to remember to tip your stylist based on the original service cost, rather than the discounted deal you received. The deal I received was unreal! She's taken me from box dyed red head to platinum blonde to the color you see in my profile picture now without ever "frying" or damaging my hair. I also think the prices are extremely fair. Absolutely unprofessional people and horrible experience. We got two Groupons for this salon. So we called them a week in advanced and booked time with Messi for the weekend and confirmed that we will be using Groupon. Once we got there and checked in, Messi, the stylist came in and said she has booked someone else between our appointments and we need to wait for another hour! Then, as soon as we mentioned Groupon, the reception desk ladies gave us bad look and said Messi does not accept Groupon. After we insisted that we had confirmed time and Groupon, they tried to find another stylist, of course of lower grade, to take care of one us and no one actually bothered to take care of my appointment! I am not one to review anyrjinr very often, but THATS how great my experience was. And it was 100% thanks to Mischa. I was getting my hair done for a bodybuilding competition. Izzazu typically opens at 9, but I was so afraid of not making my competition on time. Big ask, but I begged them the night before to somehow allow me to come in before opening hours: 8am. The manager explained politely but rather reluctantly that the woman doing my hair, Mischa just had a death in the family and likely couldn't come in that early. I understood, I knew my request was unreasonable. But they called me back within half an hour saying it was possible!!! LIFE SAVED. Anyways. Morning of, as soon as I open the door, I am greeted so warmly by the most sunniest woman!! She immediately made me feel comfortable and listened intently to my very specific needs, and got started immediately. I honestly wouldn't have known she was going through the strain of losing someone dear to her, that's how sweet, kind and professional she was. She was 110% focused on ME and what I needed. I gave Mischa my indredibly ratty, synthetic extensions with no expectations. I knew they were not of good quality anymore but I needed the length desperately. Thank have only shoulder length hair. Yet she made MAGIC happen, all within an hour and a half. Brought my dead extensions back to LIFE, shared some pleasant (and honestly great) conversation in the meantime and made me look and feel SO beautiful, so confident!!!!! The styling was perfect. My hair never holds a single curl, yet my hair stayed in place without a single issue ALL day. Extensions were comfortably placed and I was getting compliments all day. I had nothing to worry about, which is so important on a special day. I truly and sincerely wish I could take Mischa back with me to California. She is so sweet, and clearly so very experienced. This made my WHOLE day perfect. I cannot thank you or recommend you enough Mischa. Do yourself a favor guys. Book with this ray of sunshine, you will not be disappointed! read more

For my first appointment, my stylist was literally 2 hours late because he slept in. He apologized and did a really great job on my hair, my highlights turned out amazing. For my second appointment, I was 15 minutes late and he refused to take me. After sitting an hour in traffic to get there, I had to turn around and sit in another hour of traffic on the way home. I left Izzazu thrilled! I have been coming to Izzazu for a while and have always left happy. I usually come for a trim or a couple inches off but this time I came in wanting a big change and Markus was up for the challenge. I was back and forth on the length I wanted, if I wanted to donate it or not, and he helped guide me and made my vision come to life. I ended up getting 9-10 inches off and I've never felt more beautiful. Markus was so kind and welcoming and made me feel very comfortable in his hands. He was meticulous and took his time. My wife and I go here for a couples cut about every 6 weeks. We have been going to Izzazu for years. Everyone here is super nice. We consistently ask for Brandi-Lynn. She takes extra special care of us. Always making sure we have water or coffee. They have other services that my wife enjoys as well. Had a very bad experience here. I put my iPhone Down on the small counter in front of my stylist's station, and knocked over her stack of business cards which were held up by some ceramic flowery thing. When she started washing the color out of my hair she kept pulling my hair and hurting my scalp on purpose, and then she said - oh you don't like my business cards? So I said, what are you talking about? And she said well you knocked over my business cards so you must not like them or something bizarre like that. Then she kept pushing on my head and pulling my hair and hurting me ! I guess she was mad because I accidentally knocked over her business cards. What a mental case! Totally unprofessional stylist, if I owned the salon I would fire her in a heartbeat! I will never come back to this place and I will tell all my friends and family to stay far away ! read more

Wow is all I have to say. Markus did an absolutely amazing job with my balayage. It looks so natural and I get many compliments on it. He was very meticulous and could tell he cares very much about making sure what look you want is done right. I also deeply appreciated that didn't try to force conversation. I'm a pretty shy person and don't really enjoy talking while I'm in the chair, so I liked how he let me mind my own business and get some work done on my phone. I got an appointment with Mazie/Marian on a Friday afternoon. I started from work in Oakland thinking the estimated travel time would be true. However, I got stuck in the traffic and I arrived 15 min late as a result of my search for parking as well. I parked on a street and walked in to be greeted by Heather. She promptly accepted my groupon and let me in. Soon, Mazie appeared to have me seated. She got me water in a wine glass when I asked for a water fountain. She used a peppermint flavored shampoo to rinse my hair and applied a deep conditioning treatment after that. I had to run to my car later as I realized there must be no parking on the street from 4-6pm or else the vehicle would be towed. Mazie wrapped my hair in a towel and let me out. I then moved my car and parked in a garage on Oliver Ave. I returned after a few minutes just to see Mazie waiting for me. She cut and blow dried my hair. I really appreciated her patience with me. I do recommend this salon and I would be back if this wasn't in downtown. read more

An absolutely terrific experience! I chose Izzazu because of the convenient location and the Groupon they have running. I was so pleased when I arrived. The interior is absolutely gorgeous. Very posh and clean. I felt so pampered the second I got in the door. I was greeted immediately and invited to have a seat until my appointment. My stylist actually came to get me out of the waiting area which I thought was very classy. I explained to Kathryn what I wanted and also asked for her opinion. She spent several minutes going over everything and assuring me it would look perfect. The shampoo and deep condition was so relaxing! It also smells divine! The cut went so quickly. Kathryn is a great conversationalist and spent what I thought was more than enough time on my hair. The cut turned out exactly like I wanted it and I am thrilled. What's the chance of visiting from out of town, calling late on a Saturday morning, and getting an appointment anywhere for a cut? Zero, right? But not this place. The receptionist put me on hold and went to work negotiating a slot for me, a stranger. They fit me in at 2:15 with Gino himself! I got there early so his assistant could do the prep, and i think that helped. Gino cut my hair, and he also gave me a lesson in how the shape of my hair should work with the shape of my face. A true pro, this proprietor. Patient and willing to share what we all take for granted--proper hair care. The whole place was abuzz with men and women giving and getting cuts, dyes, and touch ups. Filled with pampered customers and positive energy thanks to what is clearly a very happy work environment. What a great place to be on a Saturday afternoon. And what a treat! Pittsburgh? Love ya. Was actually the worst haircut I ever got, the whole experience was torture and very unpleasant. the girl I had was very rough and she mutilated my hair. Anyone with long hair knows then we go for a haircut and asked for a trim and a shaping we don't want to be butchered and that's exactly what happened to me I was butchered I have so many uneven different lengths and the front of my hair looks like shit it's going to take a long time from my hair to grow out. I am a jack of all trades and a do it yourself-er at heart. While in college I worked as a promotional photographer for my very dear friends salon. As a barter service she always did my hair for free! !0 years I had this deal going on. As you can imagine I was pretty spoiled and didn't want to start paying to get my hair did. I began coloring it myself. Now as a licensed skin care specialist you pick things up from the cosmetologists working with you. I killed it, fried it and melted it. My hair was in dire straights! I have dark hair but I love being a red head. Marcia Cross red to be exact. Whoops! Lightening that many levels should not ever be done by a novice. What can I say? I'm stubborn that way, and think I can do it all! I reached out to Emilio for help! I have to say that after many hours of laying down color he managed to make my hair healthy again and I left feeling like a movie star. A red headed movie star! I was flipping my hair all the way to the parking garage and even did a photo-shoot later that evening. Yes I did a photo-shoot because I needed a professional head shot for my work portfolio. I don't know if I'm being too harsh but my hair did turn out much darker than I had wanted it to be. I know sometimes it is hard to predict the outcome when mixing chemistries. The other problem I had was the price tag, or the surprise when I went to pay. $250.00 for a color correction! I know this is normal sometimes when fixing the damage but it is also crucial to give your client some kind of idea on payment. I had gone in for color estimated at around $70. I think they did a decent job but for that money It should have been closer to what I asked for. Needless to say I haven't been back but would recommend in a jam. read more

I've been going to Meg F. for two years and I've loved every cut she's ever given me. She listens to what I want but also always talks to me about how my hair type will respond to certain styles. I have difficult thick wavy hair and she does a great job managing my hair and teaching me tricks on how to style at home. Plus, she's very nice and always in a great mood so I really enjoy my time there. Izzazu has a beautiful new location, right downtown next to the Capital Grille. Parking is super easy, too. If you tell the people at the garage on Oliver Street you have an appointment there are reserved spots and you can just take the elevator right up to the salon. Great for bridal parties, too they have a gorgeous place for groups called the Serata. It's a formal styling suite for groups and private parties, really unique! read more

I've been going to Izzazu for a very long time, almost 7 years now. I have ALWAYS gone to Cesare and will never stray from him! The first time I went into him, I was 18 years old and had some crazy red, blond and black hair. He really helped me go back to my natural color without damaging my hair (even with color stripping!) He always knows exactly what I want, but isn't afraid to give me suggestions to liven up my look. He literally does the best color and cut in the city. And believe me, I've done some crazy stuff with my hair with a lot of hair dressers. The atmosphere is very hip/chic and makes me feel like a celebrity when I go there! Also, I LOVE their product line. I still only use Izzazu leave-in conditioner, hairspray and dry shampoo, even while spending over half of my year away from Pittsburgh at school. The loss of one star goes to the attitude at reception. I understand it has compelled people to give them 1 star, but it IS a salon, meant for cosmetic services. You aren't going there for the reception. But, It wouldn't hurt them to smile or be a little less brash. read more

This salon has an exclusive vibe as soon as you walk in the door. They clearly tailor to a more sophisticated, higher class type of client which can be just as intimidating as it is intriguing. I don't mind paying a higher price for a good haircut and color- I'm willing to spend more money on my hair than anything else I partake in. I do mind, however, that they try to take advantage of you by making you purchase their higher end products because you "need" them for your hair to be healthy. I was very displeased with my hair and had asked the next time I could come in for another appointment (I'm very aware it would take maybe two appointments to reach my desired outcome). My hairstylist told me she wouldn't be willing to touch my hair again until I purchased and used a deep conditioning treatment they were selling. Although the treatment was nice, I am not satisfied with this type of manipulation. I was admittedly skeptical of buying the Groupon I used yesterday [$65.00 off salon services], given the location that was closest to me was downtown. The address Yelp has listed is their old address. They are now located at 301 5th Ave and have been since October of 2010. My apprehension was due to the downtown location. Not so much parking per se, but loathing a pretentious salon atmosphere. Pittsburgh salons never seem to lack pretension and not surprisingly if you have read my other reviews pretension is something I could not abhor more. Nevertheless, the reception staff and my stylist were very courteous and service oriented. Thankfully, hoity-toity is not a word I could use to describe either of them. As I have never been to an Izzazu salon before, nor have I asked my friends if they have either, I did not know which stylist to request. When I made my appointment I asked the woman, "who would YOU want to color and cut YOUR hair?" I was told Frank is an excellent stylist and had availability for the time I requested. Frank was knowledgeable, personable, and kind. He was meticulous and diligent about the low-light placements as well as making sure I have the proper amount of them. Too often, especially when using Groupons stylists hurry through placement and provide them sparsely. But this stylist did not forget the point of businesses choosing to provide Groupons. Provide excellent service, and those new customers will return! I've read one or two other reviews that commented on dirty bowls and a lack of sanitation. Perhaps I am not retentive enough to write a thorough review. I am not here to nit-pick businesses. Not to say that I did notice my color bowl, it resembled a normal color bowl not dirty or offensive by any means. Perhaps in the past they possessed such bowls and learned the errors of their ways. Or perhaps some people can never be pleased. All I can say, I was not worried about any sanitation concerns. I highly recommend visiting this salon and requesting Frank. Nuff said. read more

DO NOT GO HERE!! This is the worst haircut I have ever gotten. I thought maybe it wasn't that bad because it was "styled" but as each day goes by I'm realizing how bad my haircut here was and people even pointed it out to me. I asked for ONE INCH off and slight face framing. I was left with my hair thinned, chunks of my hair missing and "shelf-hair." Emilio cut my hair and he was all over the place and rushed me. I should have left before he started cutting. He did my "consult" for what I wanted while in the middle of cutting other peoples hair, he left leave me countless amounts of time to talk to other people while cutting my hair, and overall he ruined my hair. I told him I didn't like it and asked why he sectioned off the top part of my hair and cut extreme layers all around it and he told me "to wear it and it's what we talked about." I showed him pictures, asked him multiple times to just listen to me bc I wasn't done explaining what I wanted but he ensured me he "knew what I wanted."
