I've been to multiple stylists here and always leave happy. Lately Heather is my go-to for my new shaggy mod cut!

unethical. thieves. i was on the phone with the front desk to kindly let them know i would be five minutes late. BECAUSE i was on the phone I missed a turn, so it bumped up to 15 minutes. They knew this, because I said it out loud when the time changed from 5 to 15. She said "whoa, pittsburgh, right?" She said, "come anyway." I am a graduate student and a single parent. Exactly 15 minutes after my appointment time I am parking outside the place. At 16 minutes the front desk calls me. They tell me to reschedule, and I did then and there from my parked car, even though I had driven all the way there with their full knowledge of what had happened. One day later, I see the charge. They basically said, "oh, it had been more that 15 minutes, so we are keeping the full cost of the appointment." That is $150. I cannot afford that. I spoke with management for over an hour on the phone. They stole it anyway. I think this was unconscionable -- I did not blow off the appointment, I was late because I was trying to be considerate. Inhumane application of policy, as I was in touch the whole way. I will of course never let them, or Destinee, touch my hair. I will remove this review if they refund. I am leaving this here after some time because it turns out I am still pressed about it. I never go out of my way to leave negative reviews of businesses. EDIT: oh good, now i am being gaslit by Heather. Okay, it was 110$. Again, communication was on point the whole time, this specifically happened because i am *not* okay being late, and they could have seen me 16 minutes after the appointment time if 15. They knew i was coming anyway, and TOLD me to. Further, they shouldn't be scheduling their stylists appointments so close. They should refund this stolen charge. read more

I made an 11:30 lunchtime appointment with Destinee.. I booked it online weeks ago because I have a hectic schedule. While I was driving they emailed me to move my appointment to 11:45. When I walked in Destinee did not acknowledge my presence and was doing highlights for another customer. After sitting there for 25 minutes I asked politely how much longer she would be. She said at least 15 minutes. I told her I had a meeting at 1:30. She casually told me I should just leave. So I did. No cut, just absolute disrespect. I'm a good customer. I would never go back and I'll never recommend this salon as I was doing after I had my first cut. So rude Destinee. read more

The worst salon experience I have ever had. I showed my inspo picture to the stylist and she said, "you can't have that." She didn't explain steps that could be taken to achieve the look, or give me the options on how to gradually get there, just stated I couldn't have it. When I went back for a fix because I was disappointed in the outcome, I was judged and disrespected. On my visit to fix, it was then that I was told how we would achieve my inspo pic, and she continuously explained how expensive it would be (not that I ever once asked). Once we finished her "fix" which was still not what I asked for she ended the appointment saying "well better start saving to achieve what you want!" Not that it matters, but I paid for my service in full without hesitation. I tipped my stylist very well without blinking. Never once brought up an issue with cost until I called back to verify if coming in for a tone to fix would be an additional cost. Even then, I didn't complain about the price I paid, I just didn't want to pay more when I didn't receive what I asked for. My hair was ruined. The stylist and the salon should be embarrassed I was allowed to leave looking this way. Wouldn't recommend to anyone. read more

I have been a customer for several years, and have always been satisfied and tipped well. After a military deployment I no-showed inadvertently for 2 appointments. One was because I had unexpected surgery for an injury sustained during my deployment. I was charged 80 dollars. Okay, I can accept that slap on the wrist. Yesterday, I totally forgot (no confirmation is ever given - text, email or otherwise) I was charged $180 dollars. Outrageous. It was for all over color. This is criminal. My I also add I am a dentist and have my fair share of no show appointments. Never would a patient have such an egregious amount debited from there bank card. If you're looking for a salon in the Pittsburgh area, stop searching and head on over to the ladies at Alchemy Salon. From the moment you walk in the atmosphere Is lively yet peaceful. The fashionable receptionist greets you with a warm smile, and asks if you would like a wide variety of drinks. I was seen by the extremely talented Jessie. What I love about Jessie is that she has such an incredible way of making you feel like you're the most important person in the room. No suggestion I make is ever shot down. She's always game for whatever I want, and has a gentle way of nudging me in a better direction if my petitions are out of line. The entire staff here is so friendly and happy. I loved how they encouraged each other and supported each other. There is nothing worse than going to a salon where everyone hates each other. Sometimes you just want to get away from all the drama! Thankfully this haven doesn't have any of that nonsense. The salon is squeaky clean. They use Aveda products. And, they have a t-Rex head in their bathroom. I have been visiting this new Lawrenceville salon to see Sarah, my hair stylist, for a hair cut and color since it first opened in October 2018. I remember the excitement I felt when I first stepped into this space and upon follow up visits. I love the decor and upbeat music playing in the background which makes the time go by so quickly. Plus, the hedge wall adds a an earthy touch. Sarah has given me wonderful cuts and color for many years and now with high quality, botanically based products from Aveda. Sub-par haircut. The stylist didn't listen well; I had asked for my hair to be cut to shoulder length and for natural layers, but they cut to the middle of the neck and left very blunt layers that I had to point out during the cut. They put heavily scented products in your hair without asking. There were also errant long hairs that were left from before my cut that i ended up fixing myself. Near the end, I felt a little bit rushed; the stylist who was working on me had another appointment walk in while I was still there. This was probably because, although I'm a man, I have long hair, which I know takes longer. Perhaps it would do this business better to leave room for taking extra time instead of putting bookings too close to one another, or to make scheduling based on hair length (short/mid/long) as I have seen in other salons. While I could go back for a fix, I don't think I will, as I don't need someone to chop off a few more inches than I asked for yet again. The end result I got was fairly shocking as they have decent pictures of their haircuts on social media, google, etc., but I figure now that they must have been cherry-picking those. That part really grinds my gears quite a bit. As someone who at most gets their hair cut once a year, I rely on honest portrayals of a stylist's abilities. This was a poor choice for me, and I would not recommend this shop to anyone else. Save your money and go to something like a GreatClips -- you'll get similar quality! read more

If you are looking for somewhere to get your hair done, I would highly recommend Alchemy! You can read about each stylist online and make reservations for appointments online as well. Their time slots fill up fast. I recommend making an appointment as soon as you can and in advance if you're looking for a specific time (evenings fill up fast). Heather was my stylist. She was great! She listened to my wants and needs for my hair and cut accordingly. She washed and cut my hair then finished with a dry cut. I love it! The dry cut at the end allowed her to see exactly how my hair falls when dry and make finishing touches on the cut as needed. Every stylist seemed friendly and knowledgeable. Every client seemed to be very pleased with their hair! Their studio is located in Lawrenceville and it is decorated very cute inside. They offer you a beverage while waiting. They sell Aveda products at the salon. My haircut was $70 and this is comparable to the prices of other salons in the city in my opinion. read more

Since the high reviews, I was referred to Jamie with long wavy hair by the receptionist. I had some faded color in my ends. We discussed I liked my color growing in and long hair. I have had great Aveda experiences in CA and on Penn Ave. They always did a shade darker with some lighter enhancement. Jamie cut my hair, and the worst cut of my life. i have never had bangs and she chopped into the right side and left the other side 1.5 inches longer. She for some reason chopped into my crown shorter With no blend like bang. She highlighted the top with an ash color. I could tell it was very dry. My hair is damaged from her color. It looks like someone pulled it through a cap. I was horrified when I left. Usually Aveda makes my hair look richer. My hair is a mess! I have to curl it to style it now. I never had to fix my hair, it always fell in place. People at work said don't go back; I made an appointment with another stylist with curly hair thinking maybe she can help fix this mess. I cancelled it while struggling daily with the mess. I stopped in at an Aveda salon and they noticed the mess right away. The experienced stylist was in disbelief this was done my an Aveda salon. She had to blend three haircuts to one. She gave me free treatments to go home and felt bad my hair looks like this. I wish I would have went to the shampoo girl instead of Jamie; she probably would have listened. I had pictures taken of this mess of a haircut and color! It is beyond horrible. Maybe Jamie can have someone hack her right bang and leave the left side longer and have someone cut into her crown shorter than the rest and color the top 101 beauty school drop-out. I am sending my pictures to Aveda, she should not cut curly hair or color. I tipped the other Aveda salons 60 for their art but this is not salon work. Heather has been cutting my hair for 8 years now and I would follow her into a paper bag if it meant she was going to trim these bangs, but LUCKILY her new space at Alchemy is no paper bag. It's funky and cool but still comfortable (and there's a dinosaur head in the bathroom). Heather is truly my favorite hair stylist I've ever had -- she's fun and always figures out a way to add a little extra to your hair style, even when you just want a trim. Go see her! read more

Had a very negative experience here. I am a regular when it comes to getting my hair done fun colors. I decided to give my hair a little bleach break and let it grow out (I have short hair so this did not take too long). I had a wonderful haircut from Claire, and she let me know that she does color as well, so I scheduled a color appointment with her. The experience went well while there, she is extremely nice and we had pleasant conversations. When she was done, my hair was not the color I asked for, totally okay, such is life I have gotten color done a lot and know it doesn't always turn out. After 2 hours though the rose gold (I asked for a light bright pink) has completely come out of my hair (to note I do not wash my hair at all unless at a salon). It quickly turned very orange, again all good, I know that will happen with bleach, so I my friends toned it for me while toning, this is when we realized the damage that had been done. Not only was the bleach a complete patch job, but she had burned off my hair. Again, these things happen, but to find out two weeks later that she burned off my hair and still charged me the full amount? I would have very much appreciated if she would have owned up to the fact at the time and offered assistance there, but sadly no. This is when I finally decided to call. After a long game of phone tag with the owner (Heather) who then texted me after I left a long message explaining the situation, I was sadly still not apologized to or owned up to. Rather I was gaslit about what happens when you bleach your hair and offered a free-of-charge next appointment to fix the color. I explained that I do not trust the salon anymore as they omitted the truth of what happened with my hair and would like a refund. Again, Heather explained to me that I can come in and get my hair fixed, she told me that Claire did a good job and that they will fix what I don't like, but they will not offer me a refund. Claire did not do a good job, she burnt off my hair and did not tell me, Heather gaslit me about the situation, and here I am out $315 for fried hair and a patch job. It is one thing to mess up, but a completely other thing to not own up and fix the situation, yes they did offer to fix it, but how am I supposed to trust them with my hair? Extremely disappointed in this salon and would never send anyone there due to the way I was treated. read more

They have a 48 hour cancellation policy, but send out reminder texts less than 24 hours before. I cancelled last minute and was willing to pay the late cancel fee- that's 100% on me. I was charged for a service I did not book, and have never had done. Charged $150 when it should have been closer to $45. Poor business and lack of empathy for customer all around. read more

I have had 3 really wonderful haircuts at Alchemy. Unfortunately, I was in the emergency room this past Tuesday and was unable to get to my appointment. The owner charged me the full price for my haircut, not just the 50% fee that they claim they will charge on their website for a late cancellation. Despite me sending proof of being in a medical emergency, AND proof that I called to cancel, they recorded it as a no-call; no-show and charged me the full fee. This full fee was more expensive than my ER copay. The owner claims that I cancelled several appointments, and I have rescheduled appointments (through their app), but weeks in advance. She is hiding behind this as a reason to charge my card, unauthorized, for services that I did not receive. After several emails back and forth, the best the owner is willing to offer me is to credit 50% of the fee toward a future appointment. But after this unprofessional treatment, I would rather never deal with them again. I have disputed the charge with my credit card company. read more

This place is amazing!!! Such a cute salon, located in Lawrenceville. Smaller on the inside which makes it feel like you're getting an individual experience, and aren't just a number. The stylists here are wonderful, and work so hard to make sure all of their clients are happy, confident and beautiful. My stylist Sara Karpiak is a MAGICIAN -- she just gave me the best cut and color of my life!! Sara & Addison were amazing. I do not describe style's or color well and brought pictures to my appointment with them. We are traveling and I wanted a good haircut and update my color since I haven't had a lot done since the start of the pandemic due to an autoimmune condition, but now that I'm vaccinated and boosted, wanted to look nice for Thanksgiving and seeing family. Sara did such a beautiful root touch up and subtle highlight, my color looks fantastic. Addison's cut is great and I am able to copy the way styled it now that I bought a flat iron again. The wave I add stays so much better than a curling iron, but I am not the best or most up to date on styling, so maybe this is just me. Honestly, this is the most happy I have been with a hair cut and color in like 2 years! So glad I took a chance and made the appointment. Just be aware, you can tip using only Venmo or cash, not a big deal, but realized this morning looking at my checking account, I forgot to tip because I was having trouble with Venmo that day, so will be doing it now because they were awesome. Ok, I'm not usually a reviewer but I have been searching for someone to entrust my hair with since I moved from Chicago last year. Search no more! I was so happy with my cut and color by Heather this past weekend. We had touched base by text when I initially scheduled my appointment and her execution of what I was looking for was on point!! Being Filipina, it is honestly hard to find stylists that aren't intimidated by thick, Asian hair. The moment I felt my hair in Heather's hands I could immediately tell my outcome was going to be what I wanted. Going back to the fact that have all of the hair-- the tag team coloring seriously shaved off 30 to 45 minutes from my usually expected sit time. For only being open for 3 weeks it was awesome to see a steady amount of clients when I came in and all the employees were super nice. They cut your hair dry without the shampoo and rinse. The stylist explained the procedure and spent time understanding exactly what I wanted done. I was WAY overdue for a haircut so she had to cut off a fair bit. The cut was excellent and she did not pressure me to buy expensive hair products. I couldn't love my hair more! Sara matched my hair to a balayage inspo photo and the coloring is identical, something I swear never happens! Before she began coloring, Sara showed me samples to make sure I knew and agreed to exactly what I was getting. She cut my hair while it was dry. This is new to me, but I loved the results--she was careful and precise. Everyone in the salon was friendly and outgoing and Sara was no exception. Sara also didn't try to sell me any hair products, another huge positive.
