Finally!! I've found a place I can go back to. I had very very long hair - and I decided I wanted to chop it off. I'm hispanic so I have naturally wavy, thick, and frizzy hair. I wasn't going to chop it off without making sure that was taken care of. After searching for a while this place had the most affordable Keratin option. I've done Keratin for years in Miami, FL but hadn't found a trustworthy salon in Pittsburgh. I've had a couple rough experiences w/ cuts and coloring over the years here. Due to COVID I had to get my hair done locally and I have no regrets. Nikki was super nice, friendly, and gave me exactly what I asked for. My cut - which I was nervous about because I went from hip length to an angled long bob - looks great! The keratin was great too and my hair is so smooth. Salon Ivy recently moved from the South Side to my neighborhood and I am very excited because I've always heard great things. A couple months ago I started having Nikki cut my hair and she's great! She cuts it exactly how I want it and even takes the time to curl it at the end, which is really nice because my appointments are already long because of how long and thick my hair is. I plan to keep coming to Nikki for my haircuts. The salon is also really cute. It's a renovated row house/building right in the main business district in Allentown and they've done a really nice job with the space. It's spacious and tastefully decorated and has an awesome exposed brick wall. I'm a sucker for old charm elements like that in buildings. She was super down to earth and I appreciated that she wanted to consult with me and discuss my options before she ever touched my hair. I showed her pictures of two styles I would be happy with and she quickly told me which would take best on my grown-out brassy blonde ombré. It's because each and every person working there sincerely cares about their clients needs, wants and making them look great. Professionals at the top of their games in a salon that would rival some of the best in bigger cities like NYC or Chicago. Though my friend Sarah works at Salon Ivy, I'd never seen her professionally. That's all changed because I can never go to anyone but her again. She's known in the city for her master color skills and extraordinary cuts as well as her perfectionist nature. You will not leave her station without looking and feeling like a million bucks. Many of our mutual friends are clients and they always look amazing. I've also met many strangers with beautiful hair and when I compliment them I'm told they go to Salon Ivy; either to Sarah or one of her esteemed colleagues. I went to Sarah with extremely damaged hair. I'm a natural blonde who has always gone from one extreme to the other (platinum to red or black or the other way around, pinks, purples, etc). However for several years I'd only gotten highlights. Until I decided to go platinum again for two years and then back to red. The bleach ruined my hair causing so much breakage. Doing this only caused more breakage and my hair lost the ability to hold the red because of the bleach. So essentially my roots were sort of red with kind of pink/blonde ends. I was a mess in every sense of the meaning. I've got natural curl (wave) that was all but gone. Thanks to Sarah it's back and I once again have the ability to wear my hair curly or blown out. She corrected my color to give me the red I wanted and she also gave me an amazing precision cut; inverted bob. I'm back to the old me and couldn't be happier. I absolutely wish everyone would give this salon their business and especially Sarah. If you're worried about prices at this high end salon you need not be. I had to sit down and write a review as soon as I got home, because I am just so happy that I found this place. I have long, thick, 3c curly, multi-ethnic (Black + Latin American) hair, and after 30+ years on this Earth, I've learned that I can't entrust it to just anybody. I had recently re-located back to Pittsburgh after several years away and my old hair stylist is no longer in the area, so I fretted for months before finally doing a lot of research and finding Salon Ivy. I went to their website and filled out an appointment request form, and they got back to me very quickly with available times. Easy peasy. Chelsea gave me a wash/condition, blow-dry and flat iron, plus a trim, and I walked out of there just over an hour later feeling like a new woman. It takes most other hairdressers far longer, like upwards of 1.5-2 hours to do what she did! I also found the price to be extremely reasonable (I believe my exact words were, "That's IT?!" when the receptionist told me the total.), and I made my next appointment right then and there. Not only that, but the salon space is beautifully, tastefully done. Very open and inviting, and right in the thick of all the action on East Carson Street. I look forward to my next visit. read more

I've been regularly booking appointments with Amber for a relaxer retouch and she's sincerely the best stylist I've ever had. If you're looking for a really top notch salon experience that has stylists who are knowledgable about AA hair types, you've definitely got to stop by. It's so difficult finding a good stylist that won't either rip my hair out (looking at you, kitchen beauticians) or have no idea what to do with it altogether and I'm soooo happy I decided to give Salon Ivy a go before swearing off of salons for good because it's perfect for me. The atmosphere is very peaceful; I'm a bit shy and not much of a chatty type and when I go to the salon I like to rest, so I love closing my eyes and zenning out to the dope playlists they always have on while I get my hair treated and styled. All of their stylists seem to be highly skilled and passionate about their work, but Amber is just phenomenal. She's super sweet, understanding of your preferences, and really cares about the integrity of your hair. She's insanely gentle with my hair and my relaxers are never overprocessed, nor do they overlap and cause any breakage or any of that tragic nonsense. Needless to say, my hair has been thriving with her help - and she works so quickly! I've had other salons manage to take AT LEAST 2+ hours for a wash and blowout, so I'm always amazed when she's able to get me in and out in about an hour and a half after detangling, relaxing, washing, and blowdrying/flat ironing my hair. Exceptional service every single time. My boyfriend (a white guy with thick, frizz-prone, mid-back length hair) also loves getting a good wash and trim from Bethany, who was able to convert him into a repeat-client as well. She was also able to provide excellent maintenance advice and just seems to have an all-around great understanding of hair health, so he recommends booking with her as well. Made my appt with Chelsea at the recommendation of a co-worker. As with most other black women, I was nervous about visiting a new salon since I had been going to the same salon in North Oakland for the last 10+ yrs. Salon Ivy is very convenient to my house, which is great, but I was worried about parking. Luckily, there is a public parking lot ($0.25 for 15 minutes; about 30 spaces) right next to the salon and there were plenty of spots open on a mid-morning on a Tues. I had a balyage & style appt with Chelsea. She was friendly and easy to talk to about my hair color ideas and concerns. The best part about my visit was that she only worked on my hair while I was there. Unlike other black salons, where the stylists are working on 2 or more customers at the same time, Chelsea likes to get her customers in-and-out. I was finished with my appt in 2 hrs - practically unheard of for a black woman getting her hair colored & styled...and she had time to do a quick trim! To me, pricing was as expected. I knew it was easily going to be over $100 for all I had done. It was worth it to not sit in a salon chair for 3+ hrs like I was used to doing these last 10 yrs! My stylist asked questions about my hair and how I wanted it cut. Since I do scuba diving, I needed a cut that would not interfere with my mask or flow over into my face. This is all my fault. I should of had a black stylist do my hair. I called on Friday and asked if someone can do my texture, since I saw pictures of black women. They said that Amber can do it, but see was booked. Unfortunately, I wanted until the last minute, so I asked if anyone else can do it. I just needed a wash and flat iron. They said that Nikki can. I came in the morning, she washed my hair and hardly blow dried it. She didn't even flat iron it and she just curled it. My hair is still wet and it's not flat. HOORAY! I have a new hair salon! After reading a hundred or so Yelp! reviews on the various salons in the Pittsburgh area, I came across Salon Ivy's living social deal and snatched it up. Full of split ends from six months of abuse and neglect, I made my way to south side for a little TLC. Sarah greeted me shortly after my arrival and asked what I wanted to do with my hair. I showed her a few pictures of my "hair idols" and she understood what I was looking for immediately--flowy hair with lots of body. We chatted for the entire hour I was there about boys, driving in snow, traveling, you name it. Haircuts are boring and awkward without someone fun to talk to, which was exactly the quality I'd been looking for since leaving Austin and my beloved stylist at Hearts & Robots behind. And the Owner Chelsea actually came up to me the second appointment I had and apologized for my phone call experience from my first review. I was so pleased with her response and I have to say that my experience has been nothing but wonderful every time Ive walked in the door. I love this place - it's kind of a hole in the wall, cozy kind of salon, and any excuse to head out to the South Side is a good one. My hairdresser at MCN stopped working after my first cut with her, so I wasn't too excited to go looking for another hairdresser so soon, but I was really lucky in finding Salon Ivy and I've been a client of Shannon's ever since. Shannon is a great listener and answers any questions you might have about hair styling. I brought in a photo spread from Vogue and she was able to do the cut and color perfectly! She is also a lot of fun to talk to and completely professional. I've been seeing Sarah for nearly a decade, and this being the third location for Salon Ivy and it's staff. Today I had my first visit at the new location on Warrington Ave. Walking in the door I was greeted with an airy open brick walled room, a long staircase to the second floor with turn of the century woodwork in tact added so much character, and the decor did not busy the space. Sarah and I have a personal connection as fellow lefties, but no matter what I ask of her as my stylist-- she comes through with her best. We've done short pixies, "Axl Rose hair," a fun black/teal ombré, and even simple root touch ups. I can always count on her to pay attention to detail and i'm happy to advertise her work. read more

My appointment was with Shannon, my first time there. Shannon greeted me warmly & asked & listened to what I wanted my hair to look like after my cut. I hadn't had a cut in about 18 months. So I am all natural and have not been to a salon in 10 years. I made an appointment with Amber and I am very satisfied. She started my hair at 10am sharp and only worked on me while I was there. I wanted a cut but didn't have much of idea of exactly what I wanted so I let her do her thing. She layered and blew out my TWA , my hear feels so healthy. How I found this salon was by reading another yelp review, and I'm so glad I did! I moved to the city about 3 yrs ago, and was looking for a place closer to the inner city to do my hair. As a black young lady it's hard to find a place to get my hair done or feel comfortable getting it done. I have what the industry calls "textured" hair, which is also relaxed, But this place is great, they have a multi-ethnic staff that can do everything from relaxed and natural styles, to highlights and Mohawks. Any style and any texture hair, they got you! However don't try to call same day expecting an opening. Make sure you try to schedule at least two weeks in advance. I have two different hairstylist in New York and Malaysia who did my hair told me whoever your previous hairstylist is (Megan) did a great job on my highlights. I purchased a LivingSocial deal for an eyebrow wax and a woman's haircut. Maureen was my stylist, and she also did my eyebrow wax. She was friendly and skilled and gave me a few tips on how to style my hair. The wax was great, very quick and gentle, and the results look just like a better, neater version of my normal eyebrows. The best part was that she listened to me and did exactly what I asked for or made good suggestions for what to do instead. I have thick curly hair, and I have had A LOT of terrible haircuts over the years, so I've learned what I prefer to have done with it. I did not want any of the bulk removed with thinning shears, and I did not want a shag. I asked for a long bob, slightly angled towards the front, and very slightly taken in in the back. Maureen delivered exactly that. She suggested a way to take in the back that wouldn't leave me with a stacked look, which I did not want. She was great at checking with me to see if I liked the length and shape. Maureen ended with blow drying my hair with a diffuser and styled it curly, which has never happened to me before. Usually stylists give me a quick blow out or straighten my hair before adding curls back in. I love that she did this instead. I wear my hair curly all the time so it was great to see what it would actually look like when I styled it at home. This was probably the fastest haircut and wax I've ever received. Maureen knows what she's doing. I was in and out within 45 minutes. Loved that, especially on a weekday night! I will definitely be returning to her the next time I need a haircut. A few notes on the Salon: a cozy little waiting section with water and mints available, nice decor and lights, and the bathroom was huge and had a place for me hang my purse so it was off the floor. I am so sad that I'm about to leave Pittsburgh and I finally found a nice, professional salon that does black (African) hair with stylists that I can apparently trust! I got highlights and twists done by Carmen today and she did an awesome job. She was easy to talk to, gentle with my hair, and very knowledgeable about how I should take care of my natural hair. I left feeling like I had been right to trust her with my very first color ever. The only reason this doesn't get a 5-star is the fact that I got charged an additional $40 for a "haircut", which apparently my trim was, in addition to the cost of my highlights and twists ($100). I have never had to pay $40 for a trim. I badly needed them though, so I don't regret getting them. I will be going back hopefully to Carmen for more twists but will be taking care of my split ends at home :-) read more

This was by far the best salon experience of my life. Shannon was someone I knew from my circle of friends and who came highly recommended to me by those friends, so I felt confident allowing her to cut and color my hair. Mind you, I am EXTREMELY picky and my hair is my mojo, so it takes a very specific cut and even more specific color variation to make me happy. Shannon did an absolute perfect job on my cut and color. I honestly couldn't have possibly been any happier. She was also lovely to work with and I had an enjoyable time chatting with her during my appointment.
