I have now been to see Breanne twice and can honestly say she is as incredible and intuitive at her job as any person can be at their job! Motive Salon - Fresh cut & color! - Hair Salons Near Me - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

After searching for a salon via Yelp, I decided to give Motive a try. I called and scheduled an appointment with the first available stylist, who happened to be Claire. I had some ideas about how I wanted to change up my color, but figured it might be better to start with a cut (as I was desperately over due for one!) and discuss color at that appointment. My appointment was on a Saturday morning, and parking was super easy. Plenty of on street metered parking close by. When I arrived, I was greeted warmly and offered a beverage. Claire was prompt and super friendly. We spent a few minutes talking about what kind of cut I had in mind, and also I showed her my ideas for color. I'm notoriously terrible at describing what I'm looking for, but Claire was able to decipher my goals, and we got started. The cut she gave me is fresh, flattering, and most importantly, easy for me to style. She kept a lot of my length, but eliminated the dry unhealthy ends. She added long layers to give my hair movement and volume. The cut was reasonably priced ($45) and I love it. When I was paying the bill, we scheduled time to come in for the color. I came in for my next appointment (which I thought was at 10am, but may have actually been 10:30, as I did have to wait about 30 minutes for Claire to finish with another client. Probably my mistake). We again discussed the plan, which was to lighten up my hair overall, and add in some blonde / light brown highlights. Eventually, I wanted to add in a light rose gold / lavender glaze or color wash, but Claire wasn't sure we could do everything in one appointment, which was fine with me. It turned out that the hair gods were on our side, and the highlights ended up being bright enough to accept the color wash that day. I was nervous, because this whole plan was so far out of my normal hair "comfort zone" and my hair tends to pull a TON of red when I color it. Often times and light brown or blonde highlights end up looking orange or brassy. The end product was EXACTLY what I was hoping for. Maybe even better! The highlights are cool toned, not brassy, the purple is subtle and blended in, so much so that later that day at work, no one even noticed it right away! Again, I felt the price tag was completely reasonable ($165 for lifting the color of my roots, highlights, glaze and blow out). The only thing holding me back from 5 stars at this point is that I'd like to wait and see how the color holds up as I wash it and such...I did purchase a purple shampoo to help keep the purple tones between visits. I should add that at both visits, we discussed the products I currently use, and Claire was super cool about trying to recommend products I was familiar with that might be good for me; she was not pushy about purchasing the products sold in the salon AT ALL, which I appreciated. We shall see, but at this point I'm sold. SO glad Yelp helped me find this salon...and looking forward to continuing to work with Claire in the future! read more

I cannot recommend this salon enough. Came here because I saw the gorgeous color work they did on clients through their Instagram. Essentially had two sessions trying to get my hair colored with a bayalage...but after the second session I felt that things got lost intranslation and didn't end up how I wanted. (And to be fair, my hair had been extremely difficult to lift). So I called the owner and she made time for me immediately to come back in and fix the problem--free of charge of course---since I had already spent a lot on the first two sessions. She got me exactly where I wanted. These ladies are very friendly and exceptionally skilled at what they do. Such a hidden gem. In a (mostly) residential area with a few restaurants, you wouldn't think to find a nice hair salon but off the main drag lies Motive. It is very cute and decorated so well with classic pieces yet it was modern with bold and contrasting colors. The space is small; there are only about 4-5 chairs and 2-3 shampoo stations. There is hardly any room to wait here so it's probably best to schedule an appointment; although I'm not sure they even take walk-ins. When I came here, I was greeted and offered something to drink. After that, no one cared to tell me how long until my stylist would see me. I was kind of expecting "so and so (or someone) will be with you in a few minutes," but instead was ignored so it left me confused. After a while, my stylist finally came out and took care of me. I'm not picky with my haircuts so the cut I received was great. The care and detail my stylist took to cut my hair was also much appreciated. However, it was expensive. I figured a small place like this would charge higher than a discount salon but I didn't think it would be over $50. I was kind of expecting around the $30-40 range for just a haircut. But I can't complain if that's all I'm spending a few times a year. Overall, I would come here again for the small business vibe and the trendy atmosphere. read more

Since I moved to Pittsburgh, I was on the hunt for a good salon/stylist. After about 3 years of trial and error- I finally found it! When you walk into Motive it's welcoming, with really cool lighting and decorations. Chelsea has done my cut and color (balayage) a couple times. She first sits down with you and listens to what you want and is there to offer advice. My hair has been exactly what I was looking for every time I walk out of there. I also have had Jamie do my makeup and Sam style my hair for engagement photos and I had so many compliments on them. For someone who has never had makeup professionally done, Jamie really knows how to accentuate your features and make you feel beautiful. Sam and Jamie both worked well together - hair first, then makeup, then hair touchup. My only word of caution is make sure you leave plenty of time for your appointment. Because of all the care that they take for clients, one occasionally will run over, causing your appointment to be slightly delayed. Overall, Motive is fantastic, and they really did a great job starting a salon that truly cares about their clients. read more

Rockstar experience. Unless Chelsea moves out of Pittsburgh or decides she never wants to do hair again, I am going to follow her. I asked Chelsea to color my hair with the balayage look, and I fell in love with what she did. Chelsea rocked it out and is a go-to stylist if you want your hair colored with an Ombre or Balay. And she LISTENS to what you want. When I told her that I wanted to keep the length, she took off what was dead, but kept the length. It is so nice to be able to trust the person that cutting your hair... Besides loving how my stylist cut and colored my hair, I was also very impressed with the salon, as my visit to Motive was a first. Not only was the decor in Motive Salon trendy and modern, but the atmosphere was LAID BACK. Motive has gained my business as a new regular clientele. Since Motive is right around the corner from my office and I had been without a haircut for an embarrassingly long time, I decided to swing by and make an appointment. I'm really glad I did! The salon itself is small, but beautiful, and everyone I talked to was very nice! My friend and I looked up salons near where we were staying in our Air B & B and Motive popped up. They were right around the corner from us and we both got in with Samantha. Tried this salon out a few weeks ago for a cut and baylage. Overall it's a cute salon in a good location. They did a great job with the coloring but there were a few downsides. When I made he appointment I had said I only wanted partial and before I realized it they did full. (Not really a big deal. It looks great) My bigger issue was the cut. I have some layers around my face and it looks like my stylist took too much off on one side and there's no way to even it out without cutting my hair pretty short. So one side looks great and one side is very choppy that's hard to style especially with straight hair. read more

All of the stylists were so incredibly friendly, even giving me some fantastic recommendations for what to see and do in PGH for a newbie like myself. This place!! A friend of a friend recommended it to her, then she recommended it to me, and I recommended it to my friend, and now the whole squad goes here for their hair!! After seeing my friends' hair and asking "how did you do that?!" I knew I had to make an appointment here. I've been going for about 5 months now with Bailey (who came highly recommended from the squad). She knows what she's doing and does it so well. She helped me fix a botched cut from another salon and is basically a coloring wizard. Literally 4 months after getting a balayage I still get random compliments on my color in the grocery store.
