I've been to see Asia at this location three times now and each time I've been blown away with how amazing my hair looks. The first appointment she worked a literal miracle in changing a terrible hair cut I had gotten at another place, to honestly one of the best hair styles I've had, and it's growing out really nicely too. The last two appointments have been color correction with highlights and lowlights that matched my natural hair perfectly, and the last time we had some fun with a really pretty mauve color. She is incredibly talented, super kind, and fun to hang out with. She's taken all the things I've asked for in my hair and made it even bette. 20/10, she's awesome. I've been looking for a long time now for a hair salon that knows how to do a traditional bob cut. When I go to trendy or younger leaning salons the experience is great but I find the cuts can really be a mixed bag. A lot of places when you ask for a Bob just cuts your hair straight and doesn't take in consideration the way you will stylet. At this salon the stylists really know How to cut a bob and actually shape it so it grows in and styles nicely. I just got a haircut here by Renee and when I come home I realized that the left side is longer than the right side. I needed to get a quick appt and I asked for a senior stylist and this is what I got! Never going back again - I seriously do not leave reviews like this but for the haircut I received for $70, I feel like I need to let people know. The place itself is not very clean, pretty much all stylists had bad hair themselves - that should have been the sign! One of them looked like she didn't even comb her hair! After cutting my hair she asked me how I wanted it to be dried and I asked for something natural. She wasn't going to style it if I had not asked for a blow dry but just send me home after drying my hair with a hair dryer. It is a freaking joke! I feel comfortable here. They've taken care of my hair needs very well, respected my requests, and honored their price quotes. It's a clean and busy salon, always full of customers who seem to be loyal and pleased. What has really stuck out for me the most is the diversity! Not just the stylists, but also the clientele. I've not seen this at other salons here. Have also seen the most male clients here than any other salon in the area. Nice to know that they feel comfortable here too. The location in Monroeville is also diverse, my only gripe there is it's in a mall with no natural light exposure, so I've not returned. Otherwise, their customer service is also very good. On my first customer visit I received a $10 off voucher on a subsequent visit. What I also love about PP salons is that they're open Mondays. Most salons in PGH are not. So in a pinch, they're available. They are clean, unpretentious, and have their own product line which makes my hair feel and smell great. Ok, I've been away from pgh for about a year but here is my honest opinion--the caliber of service depends on your stylist. Unfortunately, those stylists who are capable & will give you what you want will cost you an arm & a leg. The reviewer who said that the chain runs like a hair academy is correct. Pelusi bills itself as a high end salon like Frederic Fekkai..it's not, but it charges like one. I don't know what the prices are like now, but we would end up paying $55 for a man's haircut; and that's for someone who doesn't have a lot of hair. My kid's hair cut, with clippers, was $28. IN PGH. Are you kidding me? Phil may think that he is Frederic Fakkai but he definitely isn't nor is his salon. And a tip to those going for the first time...look at your stylist's hair. I am also not really a fan of this chain of salons. It almost runs a little bit more like a hair academy, than a true salon. They seem to cycle through stylists pretty frequently, and the price of your cut is prorated depending on the level of experience of the stylist. Unless you find someone that you really connect with for cutting and styling your hair, I'd pretty much recommend finding another salon. I went to this location a couple of months prior to my wedding for a hair trial appointment. Apparently, the client before me was having a disastrous experience with a perm, and so my appointment was getting pushed back. In hindsight, I should have just left the salon and made another appointment, but I stuck around because I was visiting from out of town. I finally get back and show her how I'd like to have my hair. She quickly pins it up, and says, "Oh, but I'll do it much tighter and nicer on your wedding day." Yeah...I was not sold on her services - at all! read more

This has been my hair salon off and on for about a decade now, between moves, and a few of my early stylists disappearing to other random locations throughout the city. I think my issues with Philip Pelusi are with the company itself, not with the staff here (or at any of the other locations I've visited, to be honest). The stylists push the product, but the way that it is promoted throughout the entire store leads me to believe this is a mandate from HQ that they must push product or risk losing their jobs, and not that the staff themselves want to be pushy (but so it goes with retail and companies). That being said, I love love LOVE my stylist Ann. I've been going to her for about six years now, and she always does an amazing job with my hair. She listens to what I request and has made several suggestions regarding color and treatments that I've loved. I also got a keratin treatment here (at Ann's suggestion), and I'm madly in love with it. It was about $300 and several hours of my time, plus three full days of no washing/pulling up/touching my hair, but SO WORTH IT. It took drying and straightening time down from about 25 minutes to 11 minutes. I'll just say that again: the keratin treatment took FOURTEEN MINUTES off of my style time each day. That's a miracle to me. Regarding their products, in general, I'm not a fan: everything feels a little too-goopy and greasy for hair like mine that is already thick and prone to get oily, and the smells are pretty bad (I'm a sucker for Herbal Essences and good old Head & Shoulders scent). However, when you do the keratin treatments, your options are rather limited, and I have found a product of theirs that I can use pretty regularly without issue (it's the Fade DePhy color-saving shampoo, which I rotate with Tresseme, a pleasant-smelling shampoo does not over-oil my hair... gosh hair is so high-maintenance). I feel like my hair is kind of sticky each time I leave the salon. But, my mum goes to Ann as well, and she has a ton of fragrance allergies, so if you ask, the stylists will accommodate you! All in all though, I love this location and will keep coming back. Ann is a great stylist, and I also adore the girl at the front desk with the red hair (sorry I forget your name!). But I feel like Mr. Pelusi overshadows the talents and personalities of his stylists with the product placement, which is a shame, as the staff deserves to be in the spotlight instead. Notes: hair service costs vary by stylist. Also, they accept credit cards, but if you tip on the credit card instead of in cash, it gets divided amongst the staff, and does not go to your individual stylist. read more

Nice work. I got a great short cut and color here. People complimented me on my hair for at least 2 months afterwards. The stylist REALLY listened to me about the color. I knew the effect I wanted and at first she seemed a little surprised, but she went with it and totally made it work. Yes, she was very talky, but in the last 5 years I've gotten two haircuts that didn't make me cry (and I cry over a decent haircut, just not a great one). This was one of them. I am visiting Pittsburgh from Maryland due to a family emergency. After spending 2 weeks in a hospital waiting room it was definitely time for a hair wash. I went to this salon based on a recommendation from a friend. I was alitte nervous but I figured you can't really mess up a wash and flat iron, right? Well..... My 1st hairdresser was Traci. Everything was going well until it came time to blow dry my hair. Apparently Traci's blow dryer only has 2 temperatures, "North Pole or Hell". I complained several times about the "Hell" temperature so she finally turned it down to "North Pole". Then she proceeded to tell me that my hair wouldn't get straight on that temperature. Well my hair doesn't get all the way straight on any temperature that's why I requested a flat iron also. After several exchanges it was clear Traci had an attitude and wasn't really interested in me as a client so she left, came back and said her manager was going to finish my hair. At this point I was over all of it. I asked the receptionist if I owed anything and promptly left the store. Wet hair and all. Being as though this was my first time in Traci's chair I expected a better level of communication and customer service. I am not new to any of this. This was her first time touching the hair I have lived with for 33 years so I'm thinking I may know something about what works for me. I was trying to respect her as the professional but when I realized she could care less about learning about my specific hair routines/experiences I stopped caring as well. I do know if you are going to use 400 degree heat on my head I shouldn't need a flat iron also but that wasn't going to be the case therefore I wasn't going to let anyone burn my scalp just because they didn't know what they were doing. About 5 minutes later the manager, Kristen, called me and asked me to return. She apologized and we discussed the situation. I was still ticked off but reluctantly returned. Kristen was kind, blew out my hair without burning me, and flat ironed it to perfection. When I left my hair almost looked exactly the way it should. And the next day it was even more fabulous. (we all know that is the true test lol) I'm glad I went back and I'm now a fan of Kristen. Hopefully I get to go home soon and won't need to go back but if I do, I recommend Kristen. She turned a really unnecessarily upsetting situation into a positive one. (which means she is also a great manager, not just a hairdresser) Price - I thought the original price was very reasonable. $38 - 45 minute blow dry, $17 flat iron. I live in Maryland though so I guess it is relative. read more

Both Monica and Joanne do amazing work. Joanne has been doing my aunt's hair for decades, in a range of different styles, and my aunt always looks incredible. Joanne was booked when I needed an appointment while visiting from California, so I went to Monica, who does Joanne's hair, which also looked absolutely knockout. I was thrilled with my cut as well as the color, which had gotten badly screwed up by other stylists. They showed me color samples and consulted with someone who is apparently a color specialist (Lisa?), and absolutely nailed it better than I could have ever even described. They knew what I was after better than I did - and how to do it right. And Monica is just a doll. Monica and Joanne are definitely 5 star material, unquestionably. I was also amazed by the prices - *so* much less than I'm used to paying in San Francisco for both services and products. There are several reasons I'm only giving the salon itself four stars, though. First, the place is unbearably loud, with pounding house rock music at full blast, creating a din like I've never experienced in any other salon, because it's so loud that everyone has to shout over it - which of course makes the noise all the worse. They also have a lot of stylists in one room, but they do not have a good enough ventilation system, so all the sprays and other chemicals in the air gave me an asthma attack quickly, which has never happened to me like that at any other good salon. It would be a really fun space and scene if they just toned the music down some and had better air handling. They do have a currently unused downstairs space which was blissfully quiet and odor free, but very dark. It was a lot better than sitting upstairs among all the chemicals, though, and I was OK with the darkness because we sorted out the color upstairs by the window. It would have been much more fun to be upstairs, though, because let's face it, part of the fun of a hip salon *is* being around all the other people, but my breathing comes first. The place is also kind of a factory, and I felt kind of "processed" through - friendly, but kind of impersonal, slick and packaged, as others have mentioned. And they have their absolutely set policies, by God, which apparently neither man nor anyone else can alter. I was offered the formula for the color while I was there because I don't live there, but knew I'd lose it at that time, so I was told I could just call and get it any time. I just did call - and they flat out refused to give it to me, saying "that's just our policy". The girl wouldn't even put the manager on the line as I requested, so I doubt he even remembered who I am, if she even mentioned my name at all. So now I have to have my salon here make a long distance call - such an unnecessary waste of time, and a big disappointment to have them reverse what the stylist had told me and refuse to do what had already been offered to me. And I really hate to ask other people to spend money on long distance calls when it can be avoided. At least they'll give the formula to the salon, but still... I also seriously dislike their products, which they do indeed push hard, to the point of having standard forms for filling out their recommendations. Most good salons I've gone to do have lines they sell, and I think that part of being at a good salon *is* being able to get good products there (and it's *way* more convenient), but I've never seen them *so* pushed like that. They also smell terrible. Monica was very gracious and did not insist on anything, but it just seems weird that they pile you up with all kinds of recommendations like that without even having asked for them. I needed products badly at that point, though, and they give a great discount for first time customers, plus they were also much less expensive than I'm used to spending even without the discount, so I gave them a try. Everyone's hair is different, so they may be good for others, but they leave my hair harsh-feeling and limp compared to what I'm used to. They are just simply not up to the quality standards I'm used to with products like the Unite and Label M lines, though - just not even in the same league. They did offer to let me return the products, but I thought that maybe it would be better with some more use, and again, I'd run out of what I had brought with me so I still needed *something* at that point and didn't have the time or energy to run all over town looking for what I wanted, so I did keep them. Finally, I found out later that evening that my aunt had actually called and paid for my haircut before I ever got there as a gift, but they charged me for it anyways, and then there was a big mess trying to get it straightened out. I'll definitely go back when I'm in town if I need a haircut because the work itself was just so good, but I'll take my own styling products, take my preventative asthma meds in advance - and wear earplugs. read more

I finally "manned up" and got Highlights by Daniel. He knew it was my first experience with color and he did these super finely woven highlights that look extremely natural. I've been to Philip Pelusi twice, once before for a hair blow and yesterday I went for a manicure. I must say that both times I received a descent service, although I wouldn't say I was over the moon about them. Their manicure is priced reasonably for a salon, you can get a gel Mani for 25$. What they don't tell you though is that they charge 10$ to remove your current gel!! I was annoyed since, well, they told me that at the check out, and that almost any other salon I've been to waives the gel removal charge when you are getting a gel mani. With the unexpected added charge, I don't think I'll go back here for nails. I'd be paying the same and get a much more pampering experience at nail spas. read more

I've been going to the Squirrel Hill location here for about two years now and I always receive awesome cut / color. The really experienced stylists are super (perhaps overly) expensive! I go to Tatiana, a wonderful stylist whose prices I can actually reasonably afford :) She's been cutting my hair for a while now, and I ALWAYS get compliments. She is also super nice and considerate. My hairstylist, Corinne, is great. She knows how to cut and style very curly hair, which in my experience is uncommon in most salons. From the beginning, she asked me what style I preferred and we browsed some of them together. She cut my hair in such a way as to boost my curls. This salon is mediocre. The person on the phone was very nice and the salon itself is fairly clean. I've gone here because it is close to campus. In terms of stylists, avoid Amy if you can. I first went to her to get my hair dyed red--I emphasized I wanted it to look natural, I even showed her a picture of the color I wanted. Instead, she dyed my hair exactly the same shockingly tomato-red shade that a few of the stylists there have. For my next haircut I went back to a different stylist for a haircut and had a good experience (unfortunately I can't remember her name). Then, for my next haircut I made an appointment for a haircut with the only stylist available during the time I was free. I didn't realize that it was Amy again until I got there. She spent the entire time trying to convince me, to the point of being very pushy and rude (insulting the way my hair looked at the time) to come in to get my hair dyed by her again and to get other expensive treatments. She also seemed very rushed doing my hair--I told her she was burning my scalp with the dryer and she didn't even apologize! In the end, I was happy with the way my haircut turned out, but it was not at all worth being treated rudely. There are plenty of stylists in the city who do a good job AND act professional. read more

If I could rate "0" stars, I would. I chose a more "experienced" stylist, let's just say that the cut I received did not measure up. The sides did not match in length and one-side was completely hacked. Almost the worst cut I've ever had. Against my better judgement, I went back to have the issue corrected. The result was a completely hacked cut - now, both sides are choppy, way too short, and do not blend with the back of my hair. This is the worst cut ever. This time the "stylist" was the manager. This salon claims that they consider hair texture and face shape when performing cuts. What an outrageous lie. I have thick, wavy hair which is not responding well to the layers or angling of hair around my face. I scheduled and had a pedicure here April 2012. They have a downstairs level that they use which is where my nail stylist was when she was paged upon my arrival. Apparently she didn't hear the page and I ended up waiting until asking again 30 minutes past my appointment time. I was trying to be patient but should have spoken up sooner. This salon need a better system of greeting and handling its customers at check in. The waiting areas (two of them) are very small and in direct line of site from the front desk - so it is really beyond me how I could have sat there for 30 minutes. This is not really the best place to get a pedicure. Pedicures are a bit of an afterthought here I think. They have one very low end pedicure station - they carry warm water buckets in from another room. And because of that water is sometimes too hot or too cold and there's no foot massage or such built into the plain plastic foot bath. The pedicure itself once it finally started was very nice. Nice massage and polish application. One hour total start to finish and the cost was $28 which I thought was quite low - though I do not have pedicures regularly so I don't have too many points of reference. read more

I went to Philip Pelusi in Squirrel Hill to donate my hair to locks of love since my regular salon doesn't donate hair for you. I was super nervous never having my hair significantly short before. I read all these reviews before going and when my stylist Tracie introduced herself I remembered the below review. Well she did an amazing job! I am so happy with my cut & being able to help someone out by donating. I continuously receive compliments on my hair. Everyone at the salon seemed professional and caring about me and my experience. I didn't feel pressured to buy anything or add any extra treatments. I did end up buying a heat guard since I will be styling my new cut everyday. It was reasonably priced for how huge the bottle is. It will at least last me a year. I couldn't be happier with the experience & my new do! :) read more

I was a walk-in on a Saturday and they still managed to fit me in. Kylen listened to my explanation of how my hair was starting tto grow in again following a serious illness last year, but it was not growing in at the same rate all over. Kylen is a fairly new stylist and she consulted with her manager, Steph, about one aspect of the cut. I appreciated that Kylen didn't have ego issues with asking for a more experienced stylist's input and I liked the professional way Steph interacted with her. I get my hair done (color, cut, straighten) at the Philip Pelusi located at the Pittsburgh Mills and I have to recommend Wes. He is the best. He really understands hair, plus he is so funny! They are expensive and I am not a fan of the sales pressure to buy products I have received from some of the other stylists. Wes doesn't seem so bent on selling you everything, which I appreciate. They do call me to remind me and confirm my appointments. They only thing I would suggest that would improve my experience is, I think they should offer a frequent customers discount or card where you get a free cut after paying for so many. I basically created an account on Yelp just for this review. DO NOT GO THERE. I only requested a blow out. That means, hair drying with a round brush. No product. I did call for same day service. They put me with someone named Rashid? Rashad? Anyways, this boy (young man?) appeared to have never held a hair brush in his life. Like he couldn't figure out how to blow dry and brush at the same time. I asked for fresh, clean hair - I just washed it. So he didn't even need to wash it. He proceeded to put WAX IN MY HAIR. WAX. WAX. You don't put wax in someone's hair without consulting them first. I asked for a slight curl, so my hair wouldn't stick out, and he could not achieve that curl because of the amount of WAX he put on there. I went home and had to wash my hair but WAX is not that easy to wash off. It was a disaster. The strangest thing about the whole experience was that the manager and the other stylists were watching this boy (young man?), so perhaps I was his very fist customer. And that is fine. I wouldn't mind if someone was actually monitoring what he was doing. If he asked me if I wanted WAX in my hair. I also did not complain to anyone because I felt like this kid was literally scared. Because he knew he was terrible. So I went home and washed my hair, since it wasn't a cut or color-which would have been a total disaster and not easily fixable. In short. Avoid. read more

Hill, South Side, and Robinson) and I always thought the prices, regardless of range, were too high considering the skill and personality of the stylist. Yesterday, I went to the salon to get a wash and blow dry because I had to give a big presentation. I was at fault in that I didn't articulate that I needed someone experienced. Unfortunately, I was given a young woman who just started. The young woman actually told me that she was overwhelmed and needed to learn so many things. As she was blow drying my hair, it was clear that she had no idea what she was doing. When she finished, my hair looked clownish. I give the manager, Anthony, credit ; he saw I wasn't a happy camper and asked he could fix it. I think what would serve them well would be to let customers know if they are dealing with a first time stylist. read more

This review is for the Squirrel Hill location, where out of the 5 man's haircuts and 4 stylists that I have had, let it be said, that I will be going back to Kendall. He attentively took the right amount of time to do what he had to do, and he did it very well. Here is the experience that I have had otherwise: On the second stylist I used based on her price point (the very first was an on the spot scheduling because I accidentally scheduled with the South Side shop and was UPGRADED WITHOUT BEING TOLD of the price increase) I had a good experience first, then the second cut took approximately 10 minutes, I am not joking, because I was called beforehand and asked if I wanted to come in early because the client before me was late. When that client did arrive and was ready, I was shuffled off. It was a rush job, and an insult at $36 without tip. The last cut I got is beyond description other than I have never had a more careless job. I had to fix it myself at home which included clipping a flap of hair in the back that I concluded could not have been on purpose no matter what the effect desired could be. The bizarre thing of it was that she actually vocalized some things like blending the sides and how high for the sideburns, and then left me with a mushroom on one side with zero blending and, the most fucked up hair thing that I have ever had done, actually shaved one sideburn up to the top of my ear, unevenly, and left the other intact. This is basically unfixable without duplicating on the other side. Overall, the cut was unfinished like she got the signal to take her next. This stylist assured me that I was in good hands due to her 16 years with the salon, and the previous stylist was a manager. Watch out, and only go in on personal recommendation because they will not give a shit about you and your hair or whether you may have a job interview two days after they fuck it all up (I did). read more

I used to be a fan of Philip Pelusi and went there for several years. I have had a couple of really nice haircuts in the past, several ok cuts not worth the price and most recently (hence the review) a really bad cut. I feel that what used to be a salon is now just a higher-priced Super Cuts with their own line of products. The quality has rapidly deteriorated over the years. For a $50 haircut plus a hefty tip, it is not unreasonable to expect some pampering. but my most recent haircut took all of 35 mins including shampoo, cut and blow dry. It felt like a hack job. My stylist was also too busy directing other junior members to pay any attention to what she was doing to her own client's hair. If you are a manager, then manage your own work before managing others! There was no thought put into the shape of the cut and how it would work for my hair type or face. I feel that each stylist is required to give a "Volumetric" Cut which they advertise and that drives the way the hair is cut more than the client's hair type. I'll be looking for a new place now! The first haircut I got at the the Squirrel Hill location was the worst I've ever had in my life. I decided to go back to have them fix it. This turned out to be free, and the new haircut was great. Since then I've had some good haircuts from two of the stylists but the people working there are usually a bit rude. If there were somewhere better within biking distance I would definitely be there! read more
