I've recently moved to Austin for graduate school and has been looking around for a decent salon for Asian guy hair. I tried out a few american places like Sports Clips and Great Clips but had horrible experiences with them. Those places literally just use the electric cutters on my entire head while watching TV. I found this place on Yelp and decided to give it a try. The place looks very clean, organized, and spacious. The owner, Tony, has been in the business for over 20 years and has owned the place for 15 years. Tony, is very very nice. He chatted with me for the whole duration of the haircut and shared his life story with me. I have thick and curly hair so I usually don't have much preference on hair styles. Tony stepped me explained to me the different types of hairstyles and gave me recommendations. The result: I like it! He tries his best to conform to the request of the customer. It took about 30 min total for the process. And he only charges $12 for a guy haircut. He said that you can probably get by by making appointments on the same day during the weekdays but prior appointments are usually preferred on weekends. I left Austin earlier this year after finishing school. Always made the trek from UT campus to see Tony and now that I'm gone, I'll miss his cuts! He's gotten really busy lately but he still keeps going at it. It took awhile for me to find a place that I liked but for my time in Austin, Tony was consistent and took his time. My boyfriend tried to call to make an appointment in the morning after seeing such great reviews about this place. They told him that Tony was booked but to come by at around 3 anyway. We got there at 3 and Erica greeted us when we sat down. She made a face and spoke to Tony in a low voice (he was cutting someone else's hair) and I heard him say "I don't know who told him to come at 3, I didn't talk to him, I can't do it" without ever acknowledging our presence. She awkwardly covered up by asking if it was OK if someone else cut our hair, which we agreed. The haircuts were fine, but we were there for an hour and a half and not once did Tony even look at or speak to us the entire time my boyfriend or I were waiting. To be clear, we had no problems with the haircuts that we got- in fact, Erica was very nice and did a great job. But the one star is to reiterate how rude it was that we were not even acknowledged. All Tony had to say was "hey I'm sorry I'm booked today, next time make an appointment further in advance and I'll see you then". This kind of shitty customer service on his part makes it extremely unlikely that we will ever come back no matter how great his hair cutting skills are. read more

I typed in "asian hair" in the Yelp search engine and this was one of the places that came up. The other Asian reviewers said to make an appointment with Tony. Those other Asian guys couldn't be more spot on. I've been to Birds and Floyds as well as Pete's Flat Top Shop. None compare to Tony of Studio Cuts (at least if you are an Asian male) Another bonus is that this place is cheaper than those other 'shops as well. Even though Tony was late by half an hour for my appointment, I still rate this place 5 stars. Growing up, I used to get my haircut from Great Clips for around $8. Simple cut, no styling, buzz. When I started working, I decided to invest my money in a good haircut. My first good haircut was in San Francisco, where I paid $50 to get my hair cut by a top stylist at a hair salon. When I got to Austin, I was debating whether or not I wanted to pay that much for a hair cut here. The salons around Austin run around $30+, so definitely not cheap. After doing some research, I decided to get a haircut with Tony after hearing about the good reviews online, especially regarding Asian hair. It was honestly the best haircut I ever got, and definitely very very affordable, at only $15. Tony was super helpful and listened to what I wanted. I showed him just a few pictures of good hairstyles I found on Google images, and he did the rest. Compared to the haircut I got in San Francisco, it was honestly on par if not better. For all you fellas out that hate to do ya hair, wave your hands in the air and say heeeeeeyyy... So yeah, I'm writing this review on the basis of my husband's haircut experience with Tony. Shawn has this really thick and coarse, kind of wavy, Indian hair that's a bitch to tame. I sent him to Tony based on Kevin's review, as I was guessing he has "Asian hair." It looks best shorn tight to his head and he needs to have it cut pretty frequently, so Tony's pricing and availability are an awesome asset for him. He does a flatteringly good job to boot and believe me I've seen Shawn pay over $30 bucks and come home with something really bad, so we're both glad we found Tony. read more

So my appointment was schduled for 9am this is the time they open on Fridays. I had to wait 20 minutes for my schduled appointment. The place is very clean and tidy, 6 stations and 4 wash stations a nice little waiting area with leather chairs. They have only one look book one for men one for woman. And magazines so if you want a look I would bring a picture. The gals are very friendly and chatty. Omg! I had a wonderful experience Carmen fixed my hair it was all bolchy and uneven thanks to a previous hair nightmare. She knew exactly what I wanted layers in the back and front, she did a wonderful job. She even gave me tips on what to use on my hair for to manage the texture ( frizzy and thick). I had to wait a little bit for her on the schduled appointment but I have to say I left one happy camper. For $30 you get a great cut, style, and blow dryer. OK, to be honest, I'm used to very upscale salons where I have spent around $200-250 for a cut, color and highlight. You get what you pay for, right? The name studio cuts kind of made me think of a place like Fantastic Sams. Add in that it's in a little strip plaza, I was concerned I was going to look like a plucked chicken. But I was trusting my friends recommendation that went to see Petra here, added I was and desperate so being quoted $85 TOTAL for cut color and highlight, I took a big gulp and chanced it. Boy am I glad I did. There was an Asian guy behind me cutting an Asian guys hair that I couldn't understand and everyone else there was speaking Spanish, but I didn't come to socialize. What I did get was probably THE BEST HAIR CUT AND COLOR THAT I CAN REMEMBER!!! AND IT WAS SO AFFORDABLE!!!! I am going to do a before and after photo and post it. I have very long, very thick hair and after giving her my ideas, she got busy and worked her magic. She seemed like a perfectionist, continuing to trim a little there and little here until she was totally satisfied. Highly recommend and am sending all my friends to see here! read more

The only spot in Austin where an Asian guy can get a great haircut. I am so picky about my haircuts. Been to every Great Clips and Supercuts in Austin. None does it better than Studio Cuts. Poor service... I will never go back to this salon. My daughter and I came for an eyebrow waxing and waited for her because she is doing highlights to the customer when we came in which is understandable. A lady came in that she knows after us and they started talking in spanish! She called my daughter and let her sit at the chair for the waxing knowing that she will start the service.... But that was not the case, she let my daughter sat in the chair and she moved to the lady that came after us to do her hair and started coloring her hair! I just got my hair cut by Petra and it looks fabulous. Very hip haircut! This was my first time to go to this salon and to Petra. I told her I wanted it short and she did the rest. I'm used to going to fancy salons and spending around $100 for a haircut. Petra gave me a better haircut than I get at the fancy salons. I made an appointment for 4:30 PM, a time which I repeated back to the hairdresser twice, but when I arrived at 4:25 PM, she had already left. The remaining staff, while polite, offered me nothing other than a brief "sorry..." for my inconvenience. I understand that they may have had other appointments for the staff that was there, but it's quite unacceptable to drive all the way out to this place after clearing your schedule (I'm a busy attorney) only to be turned back with a vague apology. Now I have to take off from work on Monday to get a haircut because I have a client meeting on Tuesday. read more

Petra is the one that does my highlights and hair cut. I can not be happier! She does great job and it's really affordable. For the highlight, cut and style I never pay more than $90 and I have a long hair. They are couple down sides - girl that is scheduling is very disorganized, so can happen that you come for appointment, but you are not expected. Also, you can come on the time, but still end up waiting for a hour or so. Another thing that bothers me is that Petra can drop brush on the floor, pick up and continue to use. OK, I know that is not an upscale place, but still... However, she really does great job and it is worth to deal with mentioned issues. read more

I recently had an appointment with Erica and she absolutely ruined my hair. I had shown her pictures of how I wanted to color it prior to starting and she claimed that was something she could easily do. By the time she finished my hair was a completely different style and color than I had asked her to do. She even put highlights in my hair, not to mention some very uneven highlights, which the look I had shown her in the pictures clearly did not have any highlights at all. Seriously it's like she invited her own thing on me. She obviously had no idea what she was doing. I got home and saw the already bad job was way worse with my lighting than the lighting in the salon had let me see. A good amount of my hair was orange and the highlights were a hot mess with half thicker and completely uneven. I got in touch with her and she said she would look into giving me a refund, but then she just ignored me and I couldn't get in touch with her after that. So after embarrassingly going through a week with my hair like that, I had another salon fix it and the ladies there were so shocked at how badly my hair was done and kept showing me all of the things that Erica messed up. It's no wonder she was the only one available to get me in when everyone else was booked up for like a month from then. I am reporting her to the secretary of state licensing board because I honestly believe she has no clue what she is doing. DO NOT GO TO ERICA, SHE HAS GIVEN ME THE WORST SERVICE I'VE EVER HAD DONE TO MY HAIR!!!! read more

Owner, stylist Petra cut/colored my hair off/on for 5 years; relatively cheap-nothing exceptionally good or bad until last cut when I specifically told her NOT to cut off any length, just even out my long layers (hair was 3 inches below shoulders) & she cut layers 2 inches from the top of my head. She over-layered all of my hair & thinned it out so it looked like a mullet; the right side was 2 inches longer than the left. No excuse for this. I had to cut 5 inches off to fix the over-layered mess. Worst hair cut I have ever had. read more
