The last time I went to Stephen Todd's mobile salon was on my birthday. I was hoping for a nice birthday experience, but instead, I got a 15-minute SuperCuts-style BAD haircut! Apparently, this man had an actual salon pre-Covid. And after losing that, he has been schlepping his mobile trailer across town to various parking lots for the past 5 years. I can't speak for his pre-Covid salon, but my experience in his trailer was very disturbing! Not only was the haircut bad, but Stephen Todd also seemed to be highly agitated in very close trailer quarters. A substance problem? A hangover from the night before? Mental issues in general? I have no idea---but this guy was not a professional, not a good stylist. Just some creepy, agitated, addled guy in a hair-cut trailer----to AVOID, gals! p.s. Stephen Todd just responded that my above was a "fake review" and that I was an "evil person." Nah. It's just that I think Todd has, for years, gotten away with behaving in a creepy, unprofessional manner, especially once he was reduced to his trailer. Most of us women go to a hair-stylist for a relaxing hour in the afternoon! When I visited his mobile trailer, this guy was clearly either ON something (or recovering from something the night before) and wasn't there to provide any sort of "good experience" to me or ANY client. I got my hair cut again at Steven Todd's new mobile location 1/9/21. Great setup. I don't now his schedule but you can look him up online or send him a text. He was recently featured on the local Austin news and bookings are increasing. I have never met a Master Stylist who can give you a great cut and you are done promptly and looking amazing. If you are looking for someone to cut your hair from long to shoulder as I did or any other style, Go for it. He is rolling a few days a week so check it out. I first went to Steven Todd's mobile salon on Burnet Rd in March 2021 (hard to get into my regular salon then because of Covid backlog), then a second time in July 2021. Had I written a review after the first two visits, it would've been 4 to 5 stars: Very good haircut (better than my regular place) despite the less-than-deluxe "hair truck" venue sitting in a mini-mart parking lot! At my third visit today, though, things went south. My appointment, booked online, was scheduled for 45 minutes, from 3:15pm to 4:00pm. I arrived at 3:10. After what seemed like a quick shampoo and VERY quick cut/blowdry, Steven Todd was "finished" and gave me a mirror to check the sides/back, etc. I immediately saw that one side of my bob was longer than the other, and that there were gaps in the line on one side. I asked if he could double-check those areas; he had me stand up and snipped a bit more. My cut STILL did not look as good as what he'd done the first two times I'd been there, but I shrugged and took out my wallet to pay. But then I asked what time it was---the whole visit had seemed very rushed and I wanted to make sure. As it turned out, it was only 3:30! Todd had spent a total of 20 minutes on me instead of the scheduled 45 minutes. I then flat-out asked him, "Are you in a rush to get me out of here?" He responded that his next client had arrived; I looked out to the mini-mart parking lot: There was neither a car nor a person there waiting to come in. (Plus I was scheduled until 4:00pm and it was only 3:30!) Todd then became very agitated and asked if I was not happy with the cut. I told him, no, not really; this cut was not as good as the first two cuts that I HAD been really happy with. He then---instead of fixing the cut---curtly told me that since I wasn't happy, I didn't need to pay, and guided me out the truck door. Wow. What a bad, weird, passive-aggressive vibe. I dunno---every hair stylist that I've ever gone to usually does your hair, asks you to look at it, then makes adjustments accordingly. And, unless you're at SuperCuts and paying SuperCuts discount prices, the stylist takes more than 20 minutes. Todd, though, was clearly agitated about something and took it out on me. No one needs this type of creepy psychological stuff during what should be a pleasant visit for a haircut. read more

My reviews tend to be too wordy and too lengthy, so I will do my very best to keep this short and sweet :) I have had the blessing and luxury of having the same hairdresser for 13 years. Of those 13 years not once has anything happened where I thought I needed to try someone else out. However, with changes to his schedule, he currently is not booking weekend appointments. And his salon is in my hometown, 5 hours away, hopping over to the salon on a weekday in the late afternoon isn't a feasible option for me. This caused me to step out of my comfort zone and search for someone here in Austin that uses Kerastase products and has Saturday appointments. Through hours of pouring over web pages and reviews, I came across the name of David Bain. Nearly every single one of his reviews was stellar, and multiple people said that he has been the only person they will see for their hair for over 20 years. Worth a shot right? Arriving at the salon I immediately felt relaxed. It has this chic-modern, yet warm atmosphere. I was immediately greeted (unknowingly) by Dave who was finishing up a blow-out on a client. Once I was in his chair, we discussed what I was looking to do with my hair, showing him a few pictures of what I was looking for, how I came to see him at the salon, etc. David was meticulous with my highlights (love!) and I enjoyed being able to chat and get to know him and his story a little better as we went. He put up with me having like three different drinks on a tray at once, my keys, purse, and the fact that I was exhausted (night out for a friends bday the night before, didn't get to bed until 4 and my appt was at 10:45, so I assured him I wasn't yawning at him just simply so, so tired lol). Fast forward past the highlights, there was some miscommunication between David and another hairdresser there, and when it came time to wash/rinse/tone, it was definitely not what I had asked for, or shown in the pictures. Dave was quick to correct what had happened, I felt just awful taking up so much of his day, but he was diligent in making sure that I didn't leave the salon unhappy. My appointment definitely took much longer than either of us anticipated, there was definitely a hiccup, but in the end, I feel so blessed that I found David Bain! A rough start for sure, but hopefully if he is willing to put up with 2-3 drinks on a tray again, I am 1000000% confident that the next appointment will be absolutely perfect. He is so calm and so patient, has such an interesting life story, and I see why he has a client rapport of 20+ years. If you're looking for someone that will go above and beyond for you and your hair, I recommend Dave Bain. read more

I went to Steven Todd Salon last week and saw Dave Bain for my haircut. It was late in the day for me, so I had a beer while Dave fixed my hair. It started with a trim, then went for the shampoo. Dave always adds a nice treat with his signature head massage. Finished it off with a blow dry. In and out in 30 min. All in all...Great men's haircut. Good price and good salon. It's always so hard to go into a new salon not really knowing what hairstylist will work with you and if they will understand you. I had no appointment when I just walked in to ask questions about my hair that my husband had been eager for me to get done and like it. Well as soon as I walked in two great ladies helped me right away and wasn't expecting them to say we can work you in today. Steven Todd came highly recommended by my sister-in-law, so I knew I was in good hands. Her adorable bob that always looks shiny and put together is always the envy of my curly-haired self. As a person always struggling with the frizz, I've embraced the fact that my hair is curly, no one (even if they say they know how to cut and style it) knows how to maintain it, and it's not going to change. 31 years on this planet and I am still losing the battle. But that's the beauty of it. It's got a mind of its own and I am at its mercy. Never will be the days when I have lustrous silky long locks. Instead of placing the blame on user error, they promptly accommodated me with a stylist who wasn't expecting me and got to work on my wild mane. Keiko (I believe that's how you spell it) was kind and eager to cut and color the curls on a whim with no appointment. My cut was perfect for my kind of unpredictable curl and the color brought life back to my graying hair due to new motherhood. I recently went to this salon for the first time and I was not disappointed. I was having full-color change with highlights done for the 1st time + I have really dark hair (like almost black) and was going to go much lighter. My fear was that it would be over-processed and the color would be off and not look blended. I can't tell you how GREAT MY HAIR LOOKS !!! Dave Bain is the best!!! Dave has been doing my hair for many years. Whether I've been freshly cut and coloured or due for a recolour and cut, I am always getting complements on my hair. I average at least one compliment per day and either the cut or the colour- or both. When laying back in the shampoo bowl, I have a hard time staying awake through the shampoo and scalp massage. read more

My daughter (10), my son (13), and I (nydb) all get our hair cut at Steven Todd and we are all very happy with it. My daughter wanted an angled bob, and she brought in some pictures to show Steven. He gave her a seat and asked her some questions and really listened to her answers. He didn't do exactly what the pictures showed because as he talked with her and asked questions, he understood what it was she really wanted, which was a little different from the pictures. She got exactly the style she wanted and she's extremely happy with it. I'm glad she has had the chance to learn what it's like to go to a professional who treats her with respect and care. For myself, I wanted a short haircut style that's short and spikey in the back and longer in front, similar to a woman French chef in San Francisco who I like a lot. I've tried to get this haircut before in Austin (brought pictures) and it was a disaster. By the time I got to Steven I was pretty neurotic about it and talked with him for at least 10 minutes before he made the first cut. He was so attentive and kind, on top of the fact that the man cuts hair like a boss. He did it! And when I decided the next day that it needed a little fine-tuning in one spot, he fit me in that day. For my son, he has enough hair on his head for two people, and he likes his hair a little on the long side and shaggy. So this rules out Sport Clips and Birds and anywhere else where they just give boys all short hair haircuts. Mckalla got it right the first time. He won't let anyone else touch his hair now. Everyone here is so nice, and they really--no *really*--know how to cut hair, both long and short styles. And Steven won't let you go wrong with your hair. If you suggest something he thinks won't be flattering for you, he'll suggest some adjustments for your face and features and hair texture that will make the style you want even better. For the attention and skill they have, they're a great value, too. I'm so happy I've found them. read more

Customer service: Everyone is really friendly and accommodating, and go above what's asked of them. Price: The prices are more than fair. I can't believe I've been going to Supercuts for 2 years even though Steven Todd costs a similar amount and the results are much better. Service: I have hair that almost reaches my knees. I know highlighting and dyeing can be a real pain but they made the process much quicker and easier than I've ever experienced before. McKalla even braided my hair afterwards and offered advice about how to pull off a faux bob if I wanted to change things up. Conclusion: I wish I had the (1) money and (2) excuses to go in every week just for fun. read more

I have seen many stylists before in Austin and NYC, when i lived there and i think Steven is a cut above all of them. i tell him what i am looking for in simple terms and he does exactly that. Steven is an amazing hairdresser. I had been cutting my own hair (poorly) for about six months when I just decided it was time to get it done professionally (my current hairdresser had just gotten really busy with makeup and film). I booked with Steven online. When I arrived, I decided to just let him do what he thought was best. He explained my face shape, asked a little bit about my life and lifestyle, turned me away from the mirror and gave me the cut he thought best. It is what I consider to be *the* cut that is just right for me. I can absolutely get right out of the shower, put product in, and have a cut that even the software developers I work with (this is tough if you work with sofware developers) noticed in a positive way. Its also a cut I can also have fun with should I choose to spend some time on it...it straightens beautifully, holds big curls nicely if I roll it, and is very complimentary to my face. It also grows out beautifully and as I am letting my hair get longer it looks better from day to day. It also makes me look a few years younger, which is a huge bonus. His price is also super reasonable given his experience. Cannot recommend him enough. read more

I've read some of the other reviews for Steven Todd Salon and I have to whole wholeheartedly agree that every time I leave Steven's salon I feel like a million bucks. Like alot of people my work is stressful, but when I walk into Steven's salon its like an oasis. The decor is amazing. the way the salon is set up makes you feel so relaxed and you immediately know you are going to be taken care of and your going to walk out, well feeling and looking like a millions bucks. Steven and his staff are true artists at what they do. They take care of you from the moment you walk in. Yes, I admit it, I have strayed a couple of times and went to other salons or barbershops, because hey I'm a guy. A haircut is a haircut, right? Wrong! If did get a haircut at those other places. it was just that, I may have had less hair than when I went in but that's about it. I wouldn't and shouldn't compare the level of service as what I get at Steven's salon. Its just a awesome place to get your hair did and I highly recommend it. I gave them 5 chances, with 3 stylists; in the end, I can't go back. Here's my story, stylist by stylist: McKalla: I went to McKalla and was actually really pleased with the way my hair turned out, the coloring was great and what I needed. However, I couldn't stand listening to her. I actually had told her that I would have to work while I was there because of a fire that was going on at work. She didn't respect that I really needed to focus and that was frustrating. When we did talk, she seemed disinterested in me and immature herself....you can tell she likes the sound of her own voice; speaking of which, she also talks in weird voices and some are actually kind of offensive... I literally had to choose between a good haircut and having to sit and listen to her for 3 hours. Gross. Nate: Oh gosh. Where to begin. I first went to Nate and had a good experience. He touched up my color and make it a lot lighter and I really loved it! However, the following day I noticed that my roots were JUST AS BAD as they had been when I walked in (we're talking at least 6 weeks since my last color, so pretty darn bad). I called him to fix it and two weeks later because of him not getting back to me between days,came in; it barely did anything. He told me that next time we were going to try something new to fix the problem, so I booked another appointment online, when I got there he wasn't there and apparently their online appointment maker wasn't working, so I had to reschedule for down the road. Same thing with communication, but on a Thursday, he texted me that he had me on the books for Friday at 5:30, which okay, I guess that works for me? Got there, no Nate. NO ONE even TALKS to me for 30 minutes (I didn't say anything because I was okay waiting for him to get there or whatever). At 6 o'clock Nate's father, Steven comes and sits by me and tells me that Nate didn't show up to work. He said that Nate was a DRUG ADDICT and going through some rough times with his girlfriend, and that he hadn't heard from him all day. WHAT??? Sorry, I can be sensitive to these kind of topics, but after what I had already been through, I told him that I needed to be seen right then or I wasn't coming back. He then talked to the stylists and hooked me up with one. Which leads me to.... Some other stylist (Jessica? Lisa?....she had purple hair): basic hair cut. She was really nice, but I was really disappointed with the color. I told her I wanted to stay light, but she darkened it with lo-lights. My blonde was also REALLY brassy. She checked my hair twice under the heater and eventually (literally) said: "I guess we'll just have to be a little brassier than we want". WHAT? No, fix it! Ugh. Good haircut, though. So, WHY did I keep going back and give them so many chances? Convenience. I work five minutes away and can't get off work before 5. They take later appointments. They're also cheaper than others I've come across. StevenTodd Salon has some great reviews, and honestly probably well deserved. However, I always felt like it was a mess over there. I probably shouldn't write this rating because I don't want people to find out my secret, but it's true.. Steven Todd is a master with scissors and color. When I first started seeing him 18 months ago, I had damaged hair with a terrible cut. He has, not only improved the quality of my hair, but is so much fun to consult with. I love to color and change my look and he always has practical but fun suggestions. If you are looking for a stellar cut and color, Steven is your man.. but don't book too many appointments, I still want to be able to get in to see him!! read more

If you want your hair cut, this is the place to go. Steven cut my hair and you can tell his hands had been cutting hair for a long long time. I mean 30+ years!!!!!! I had been cutting it really short and he really cut it the way I wanted and I love it. I don't even have to comb my hair sometimes. I'm a mother of a 2 year old so he made it possible so I don't have to struggle with it by cutting it short and above all a great hair style.
