I loved how she listened to me and knew exactly what I wanted. I wanted a frame cut and something light. I don't really like dark hair. I also wanted a hair color that wasn't going to dye my face or clothes. I have always had pink, purple, blue or some type of semi permanent hair color. She picked out a mauve pink color, which i love. I can't wait to go back for another change in color. Not sure what I want but I do know something different. The first time I went to Salon Vela and got a haircut from Jessica, I loved it. Months later, 3 months postpartum, I wanted to chop my hair into a simple bob -- nothing complicated, just a short, clean cut with thin face frames. My hair was falling out, always tied back, and giving me headaches. I desperately wanted something easy to manage so I could feel human again. To make it worse, it was my birthday weekend, and I wanted to treat myself to a haircut that would help me feel better. When I called I specifically asked for Jessica, but I couldn't make the times she was available. The salon gave me a list of other stylists. They quoted me $65 and told me Kendall, a "level 1 stylist," could take me. I checked their website -- Jessica was also listed as "level 1," so I figured no problem. At no point did anyone tell me Kendall was still learning, still a student, or not ready to do a bob haircut. If they had, I would have waited or gone elsewhere. The haircut with Kendall took nearly 3 hours. She split my hair into a million tiny sections, moved painfully slow, and kept stopping to fuss with my hair. She was gentle after I told her I had a sensitive scalp, which I appreciated, but the actual cut? A disaster. I rushed out to get home to my baby, but once I looked closely at home, I realized my hair was an uneven, jagged mess. So yes -- I had to spend my birthday weekend with a botched haircut that made me feel worse than before. I'm not confrontational, but I messaged Kendall on Instagram. To her credit, she admitted the cut was uneven. I gave her a second chance -- against my better judgment -- because I thought maybe with guidance she could fix it. She told me her boss would help her. That gave me some reassurance. When I went back, she apologized and sat me down. I asked about her boss. She went and got him -- he came out from the back (where he was eating lunch), looked at my hair, pointed out everything she did wrong, and gave her instructions on how to fix it. He reassured me that they had "practiced over the weekend" and she'd be able to do it. Then he left after 5 minutes. So there I was again, sitting in Kendall's chair. For the next 2.5 hours she brushed my hair nervously over and over, looking like a deer in headlights, hoping it would somehow fix itself. Meanwhile, I watched the boss and another stylist take multiple clients each -- they both did two full clients, started on third -- while I was still stuck there with Kendall struggling and making no real progress. By that point, I was crying in the chair. Imagine: 3 months postpartum, hair falling out, hoping for a haircut to make you feel better -- and instead sitting there for hours while the stylist is clearly clueless and the boss, who admitted she messed up, refuses to fix it. When I finally asked him to step in and please just fix my hair, he brushed me off. His exact words were "Nobody has time for you. You'll have to come back again. I can't fix it for you today." Let that sink in: I came back specifically because Kendall messed up the first time. I gave them a chance to make it right. Instead of fixing it himself -- which would have taken him 20 minutes -- he chose to take her other client and leave me sitting there in tears getting experimented on. If he was going to take any client, it should have been me. That is basic accountability. I told him I couldn't keep coming back -- it's a 35-minute drive each way, plus another 3 hours sitting in that chair. I said I didn't want to come in a third time. His response? A shrug and: "We'll just refund you. I don't know what you want me to do. My niece has been waiting for me. Nobody can fix your hair today." That's it. When I came to the two of them frantic they PICKED UP THEIR PHONE ON THE SPOT and said "Shawn has an opening at 12 this Thursday, he'll see you then". Shawn was amazing. Disclaimer: I have lived in Austin for 4 years and still travel back to Phoenix at least once per year to get my hair done. I have tried several top notch Austin spots but leave underwhelmed and not as happy. So when I was calling around Saturday for a last minute appointment for highlights, the bar was low. Salon Vela was able to get me in with Lauren, a level 1. I hadn't heard of Vela before so was skeptical. That being said I also chopped my hair off at Floyd's a few weeks back so I've been taking some risks lately (they did a fine job actually). But my color grow out was too much for me to handle. The salon itself is on the hidden side of a less that busy shopping center with a nondescript sign. The interior is warmly lit, open, and clean. Lauren finished up with a cut before me and got me started. She asked what I was looking for and if I had brought any pictures - we agreed on an approach and we got started. She provided a gentle reminder that it may take two or three appointments to get exactly what I was looking for. Lauren is bright, cool, and friendly - with some rad tats. Once I was done processing she toned me - which is where I always get scared as most folks in Austin tone me to a weird brassy color. I wasn't sure how it was going to turn out even when I was back in front of the mirror, but as Lauren began the blow out I was impressed. It was the perfect color and well blended. I felt so much better. Lauren's skill and personality, and the salon's price point will have me back. I paid $75 for the partial and $18 for a gloss. So now that I've calmed down more and can type about my horrible experience I had Friday December 1st I will share the dilemma. I had a hair appointment scheduled for Friday to get my hair color and to get something new. Same place I had my amazing cut done. I found the ideal look I'm aiming for and walked in ready and happy for the much needed change. Mind you never have I ever met a stylist who couldn't do my hair with any picture I've ever brought in. So get there at 5:20 appointment is at 5:30, I had to wait just a few minutes before being seated. Chris starts asking me what I'm looking for and I show him my picture. Right away he was like that will look great but it's going to be hard to achieve because my hair is so thin and damaged. (I thought this was highlights but it's different technique, but what I wanted to aim for. Funny part is I just was in there for my cut and he said my hair was very healthy and when I was ready to color it will take color nicely.) So he starts to show me other looks that he thought would be better for my hair. I hated them all! So he proceeded to go talk it over with his boss and kept me waiting for 30 mins. They finally come out and spend another 30 minutes over-talking about what I want is going to be impossible to achieve because I have dark hair that pulls a lot of red. I just gave in a said fine let's do one color I want the Gray covered!!! I can't keep going around in circles and frankly it's NOT what I want but at this point I felt bullied by them. So now I've sat in his chair for an hour and nothing has happened. I finally get so overwhelmed and anxiety attack was setting in when my lovely sister called. I walked outside to take my call since they went back to figure out a color plan. While on phone I fully break down in tears because I'm about to pay for something I can do my damn self for much cheaper!!! Sister says walk out that is unprofessional, I bet you it has nothing to do with your hair as much as it has to do with time. (They were closing in a hour 7pm per hours on door) Just as I was trying to pull myself back together he pops his head out and ask if I'm ready. My sissy still on phone says don't pay for something you don't want, you'll regret it. I hang up and walk back into the salon and he starts asking me again what I want. I finally snapped I went in there feeling like a million bucks and I left feeling like a homeless person. I felt like I walked in there with a plan and was talked out of it. Chris apologized for how I felt but it doesn't make up for what was done. I walked out of there feeling worse than I did going in, my hair is still not colored, and I just lost it breaking down crying in my car. I want to spare anyone from having to be treated like this because today I am still very upset about the unprofessional approach that was received Friday. Let me start by remarking on salon vela's exceptional customer service. Everyone I interacted with was very sweet and accommodating, and the salon lacked the cold pretentiousness many salons of its kind have. I went in to get my overgrown dark roots dyed so they matched with the rest of my lighter colored hair. I thought this would be a simple job, but then again I know nothing about hair dye. The first dye attempt left my roots looking almost exactly as they were - dye was too dark. I was given a complimentary appointment to come back and retry. Color-lifting shampoo was applied to my roots to get out the first dye attempt. After that, it was too light. So, after a huddle session between a few of the stylists, another dye attempt and.... Again a bit too dark, though strangely my non-roots seemed much lighter. After this both my stylist and I wanted equally to end the ordeal. I said it was ok, and was given free revlon hair products for my troubles. It doesn't look bad, but not exactly what I wanted. I do believe my texture has been affected negatively by the color lifting shampoo. Salon vela is a great salon, but I left feeling like they just do not know how to color naturally dark hair. **Update: Hate to kick a dead horse but over a year later, my hair quality never returned to what it was after the color correcting at my roots to lift the mistakenly too dark color by, - I believe it was -Rachel. It got much worse as time passed and my weakened hair broke off. I haven't colored it at all since the incident and have tried numerous hair treatments but the breakage is unmistakable. I'm just trying to grow out my hair and cut off that part so it can regrow to how it was before. Please don't go here and get color by Rachel if your hair is dark. She needs more training and shouldn't be allowed to experiment like this. read more

Shawn did an amazing job on my daughters hair and the five stars are solely for him. Unfortunately, if I had to give it on the actual salon It would be a 1 star. My 14 yr old Daughter was scheduled for her cut with Shawn/ This is our first time at this salon and my daughter hasn't had her hair cut in years. She's been growing it out to donate 12 inches. So we walked in with my husband and 2 year old son for her appt and the front desk girl checks us in then immediately goes and grabs another women hairstylist ONLY to ask us if we were planning on staying. Now we had only been there for 2 mins, hadn't sat down and my husband was holding our son. I let her know that we were not staying we just wanted to get her checked in and let the stylist know what she wanted. She then rudely says okay good because we aren't kid friendly.... Completely unnecessary to tell us that since we just said we aren't staying. We realize it's a salon not a playground. She isn't just not kid friendly she isn't friendly at all. I had never had a real salon experience and going in, I was terribly anxious. I originally wanted a gray balayage and spoke both with Simon and Lou about this. In turn, they were honest about the fact that it was most likely not achievable due to how dark my hair was. Thank you for that. Honestly, another place could have fried me up like Sunday dinner and called it good. I appreciate the honesty! I decided that I wanted a copper toned balayage instead and let me tell you, I feel brand new! During my time in the chair, Lou was easy going and likable. Great conversation and laughs were shared. A friend of mine recommended Ron at Salon Vela after my stylist could no longer do hair due to an illness. I had waited from March till the end of September to get my hair done by someone else because I didn't want to "cheat" on him. In the mean time I had growing out highlights and gray hair and had decided over the summer to home color -which wasn't going well. I have a lot of fine and long hair. My first visit Ron spent considerable time examining my hair, what had been done, and what I wanted to achieve. He was up front stating that I could not be as blonde as before (I showed him a pic) without him possibly damaging my hair. So instead of many highlights he color corrected what I had done and gave me subtle highlights. He spent far longer on my hair than I anticipated and all because he wanted me to have a fabulous experience and not have damaged hair. It did take 4 hours and I thought the fee he charged, including some product to keep it looking good, were very reasonable. Ron is a master stylist and teaches others in the Salon. The COVID precautions were very apparent, everyone in masks, no magazines/food/drinks, and constant cleaning. I felt very comfortable. Ron and Simon were incredibly gracious and made my entire afternoon fun. I truly hate to sit in a chair (nails, hair, etc) and also have a tender head. Again, my end result was incredible, soft to the touch, and we have agreed on a schedule to get me back to my "blonde" self. I highly recommend Ron and the entire Salon Vela Crew! read more

First off, I cannot say enough about how great the customer service is at Salon Vela. I was promptly greeted as I entered and did not feel out of place or uncomfortable they way some of those other salons can make you feel. Then there is Gabrielle...She is absolutely amazing! Never I have I been to a salon where the stylist is not only professional, thorough, and friendly. She talked me through options for my Balayage color, answered all questions, and was completely upfront about pricing. During the entire process, she told me what she was doing and provided clarification as needed. AND, a huge plus is that she wasn't a pushy product sales person. She told me about the product she was using and its purpose but never did I feel "obligated" to purchase any of it. She did make a great recommendation on a product that wasn't outrageously priced but necessary to the upkeep of my color. Today I had the privilege of being taken care of by Chris. I wanted color and a cut. I was not sure what kind of color service or color. We talked and came up with a plan. I'm a newbie to Salon Vela. I'm a transplant from Northern California, and have never strayed from my hair stylist back home in 12 years! Sufficed to say, I was extremely nervous about trying a new salon in general. It had been over a year since I had gotten a cut or color because I was that nervous about it! My hair was ombré, long layers, and down to my butt. I wanted a trim and to add lots of layers, because this Austin heat sucks and I am not fully ready to part from my length totally. Today was my first visit to this establishment, and unfortunately, my string of bad luck with salons continues. I had Christopher as my salon person and I came in for a cut and blow out. I told Simon when scheduling my appointment that I have A LOT of hair and to leave a lot of time for my scheduled slot. It did not happen and there was an overlap with my time and the last client of the evening. Due to this Chris had to have a second salon artist help blow me out and I could palpate the tension and stress, the whole experience became stressful for me- the paying client left more stressed and anxious leaving the salon than coming in. During my blow out he would pull the side he was working on and when I finally couldn't take it anymore and told him to let up, he would blame my hair getting tangled in the round brush- maria, on the other hand, had the other side of my head and never pulled. It was a stressful nightmare, and I won't be returning again. The haircut was fine nothing spectacular I cut a significant portion of my hair and got layers, the blow out was less than mediocre, honestly, I do a better job myself at home. My hair looked flat and lifeless in the end since I was getting rushed out of that chair so he could help the next client. I just didn't get what I wanted, which was a voluminous bouncy hair blow out which I asked for and didn't get. It sucks to be a paying customer to be rushed out and still pay the $76 AND NOT BE HAPPY WITH THE RESULT. I won't be returning. It really feels horrible to be overbooked and have your time be rushed and for the client to be in stress. I didn't even get to drink my wine they provide gratuitously. I end my evening unsatisfied and with a migraine due to the merciless hair pulling by my salon person. Yay. read more

I hate leaving negative reviews, especially when everyone was so friendly at Salon Vela. Booking an appointment was easy as pie and being offered a drink and a complimentary hand massage by Rachel was above and beyond what I've experienced at other salons. However, my hair cut was absolutely terrible. What should have given my hair movement and flow, instead looked like my hair had been hacked off. I had uneven layers and had to cut my own hair at home to even things out. Luckily my hair's pretty long and can hide an uneven cut. Still, I have higher expectations of stylists with 10+ years of experience. It was October at the time and I needed a little change so I decided to dye my hair aubergine. The color came out beautiful and natural, however, I was told color would be $60 over the phone. I figured that was all inclusive, but my stylist added two bottles of glaze which added another $60 to that (my hair is long and thick but two bottles is a little excessive). What I thought would be $120 for a cut and color ended up being $200 with tip - that's what I would pay for a full head highlights, not for a simple color application. I have to agree with those who claim Salon Vela is not successful lifting dark hair. I spent over $700 in under four months trying to achieve a non brassy balayage with Rachael. After 7 appointments I finally stopped trying and found Trey at Milk n Honey ... Trey fixed everything in only one visit!! He is new in the industry yet super knowledgable. You would think an "experienced" stylist like Rachael could get it right on her own but it is pretty apparent she needs coaching. Salon Vela will waste your time and drain you for money. Several times they charged me for ash glaze but never used a second bowl of application! Salon Vela will get you in the door with a coupon then scam you into coming back by "a no color guarantee". In other words, they will continue to charge you even if they did not meet expectations. I am not one to post on Yelp and tried to resolve the issue privately in person and via email to the owner. Again, I was dismissed without a resolution to the charges. I plan to report these charges to Wells Fargo Bank and share my experience with a relative who works with Austin Monthly Magazine. Don't make my mistake. Best to save your time and money at Milk n Honey. Unlike Salon Vela, Milk n Honey guarantee their service and promise to make it right without additional charges. read more

Never going anywhere else! I've been here several times now and can say I finally found a place that I love. I first went to Angela to fix my poorly done balayage at a previous salon. She not only easily fixed it, but gave it a wonderful color. Every time I leave here, I always love my hair and have this new confidence! My usual experience at Salon Vela: You're greeted at the door by Simon and offered a drink immediately. The salon itself has a welcoming yet chic vibe. Angela first asks what I would like, then me knowing little about hair, asks for her suggestion, then I go with it. I'm very low maintenance when it comes to my morning routine and explained to her I don't do much to it, but still like color & movement. Angela always knows exactly what to recommend. 100% happy every time that I follow her advice! She always explains what products she's using and why. I've received endless compliments on my hair the last time I went (before/after pics will show her talent)- she explained that she tried a new balayage technique. Even though I'm leaving Texas soon, you can bet I'll be back to Austin just for my hair appointment (and ATX food, of course)! read more
