My friend told me to try this place as he claimed it was as good as Wasabi and Oiistar. I highly doubt that. I was really hesitant to try this place after reading all the Yelp reviews (mostly negative) and knowing this place is in Chinatown. It was until I read a certain "5-Star" review, claiming to be "authentic," that I have to try this place. However, I have to wait until my sister was back for Spring Break so I can bring her along to check out this "authenticity." She had studied abroad in Japan for a year and certainly ate a fair share of ramen there. I'll take my sister's word if she says this place was "authentic." With my sister, I decided to check this place out. I am amazed at those who gave this place 3 stars or higher.
My sister asked for tea while I got ice water as usual. She got disappointed when it was regular Chinese tea. It would be nice if the servers left the glass container of water on the table instead of consistently refilling my small cute cup.
I ordered the Tonkotsu Ramen with Kuro Buta (pork belly) and my sister ordered the Tonkotsu Ramen with Kamo and Kuro Buta (pork belly). My sister and I did not like their noodles. It didn't have the spring, firmness, and bite I was expecting in an "authentic" Japanese ramen. The noodles tasted similarly to regular dense Chinese egg noodles you would find in the surrounding Chinese restaurants. I admit that there were enough noodles in the bowl to be satisfying and not crowded. Plentiful as it was, the noodles did not have the texture and size that one would associate with Japanese ramen. The tonkotsu broth was not perfect in any way. The "48 hours boiled black boar bone broth" was not rich, no depth, and overtly salty - "too heavy without dimensions" as my sister puts it. The overtly saltiness comes from overuse of MSG. As stated in the menu, the ramen was served with Kuro Buta (and/or Kamo), mayu, garlic oil, fresh chopped garlic, sesame seed, scallion, and menma. When we got the ramen, we had bean sprouts. We had never eaten Japanese ramen with bean sprouts; it awfully added a different texture of the noodles with each bite. If we had Shoyu Ramen, which has bean sprouts and nori, instead of the Tonkotsu Ramen we ordered, this place definitely sucks. If so, where was the boiled egg? The menma (bamboo shoots) were undercooked; it was tough and fibrous. I did not taste any garlic oil. The only thing I liked about the ramen was the Kuro Buta (pork belly); it was tender, crispy, fatty goodness. My sister said Japanese usually have thinner slices. I like my meat one-inch thick; it gives more of a flavorful bite. It would be awesome if there were two of them, but it might to be too much for one bowl of ramen. The pork belly was more flavorful than the one served at Oiistar. My sister did not like the Kamo (duck). It was served diced instead of slices and the Kamo was not noticeable. After we left, we were extremely thirsty - not experienced in other good ramen places. My sister got a Starbucks drink on the way home. Later that day, I got really bad headache that I would usually get if I consumed too much MSG. It was the worst MSG-induced headache ever...
For those who think this is authentic Japanese ramen, you are severely mistaken. Your taste buds must have been severely screwed up. As my sister summarizes it so nicely, "It's a far cry from Japan [and it] screams Chinese." I would like to add, "It's a Chinese restaurant with a half-a**ed copy of Japanese. Strings definitely did not remind my sister of Japan; it's more of an insult to Japanese cuisine and I agree. If this place reminds you of Japan, you have sadly forgotten and should go back again soon. It is perfectly located where it should be - among other heavy MSG-using, poor quality, fake restaurants. The service and décor was great, but that doesn't cover the fact that the food was bad. If the service was bad and the food was great, the restaurant is okay. This is not the case. If the food is bad and the service was great, the restaurant is bad. No beautiful décor and great service can compensate for bad food. My sister gave this place 2 Stars. I would give this place 2 Stars as well for the pork belly; however, I have to give them only 1 Star because the heavily salted broth gave me a bad headache. Deduction of another star will be accounted for if the order was incorrect, totally to 0 Stars. Will we go back again? H*** NO! I'm definitely not coming back. I rather drive further to Wasabi or Mitsuwa.
On a side note: My sister said the Oden Ramen looks ridiculous. It's not Japanese as she points out. With the skewers, it's Korean. read more
