They were supposed to order new rims (most likely $150), replace them, and call me when they're done. Instead they immediately tried to upsell me on a new wheel (likely in the range of $600), they forget about my order, they refused to call me back with updates - including when the job was finished, they missed their deadlines repeatedly without telling me or resetting expectations, they FORGOT HOW MUCH I OWED THEM, and they sent me off with A CROOKED WHEEL!!! My advice, go to "The Loose Wheel" outside Montclair. Or buy the tools and figure out how to do it yourself. Both options will be cheaper and more time efficient. read more

As an avid biker, it took me long enough to finally pay a visit to this place. I came in with the intent of getting some serious maintenance on two of my bikes and not only did I get that, but I also walked out with a few grand spent on wheel upgrades and some new tires/tubing etc. Reason why that happened was because they have a good selection of items and also a very passionate/knowledgeable group of folks who work here and really know how to find the best items to augment and enhance high end bikes. It was really nice to see my Cervelo get some really nice upgrades. It took a while to get the wheels, but that's generally what's happening these days with custom orders. Given all the supply issues everywhere, it's just par for the course it seems so you'll probably want to take all that into account as you deal with upgrades etc. The work they did on the bikes by the way were solid and top notch. Better than the work I used to get in the city. Granted it was fairly pricey but it's worth if if you have some decent bikes that you really want to give some love to. All around a great shop for the avid cyclist. read more

I drove by Strictly Bicycles one day and told my boyfriend to check out their website since he was in the market for a new bike. This shop was one of the few where their online inventory was actually up to date! He was able to purchase a new Specialized bike online for in-store pick up in the midst of the whole national bike shortage that was 2020. The pick-up process was very smooth, the store is pretty big (two levels) and there's a decent sized parking lot. The workers at the shop were helpful with any questions we had about the bike we were picking up (and other bikes) and adjusted the seat before we left. There was also a little coffee bar! read more

After visiting most of the bicycle shops in BERGEN County, I won't go anywhere else but Strictly Bicycles. This is the beat cycle store in NJ. CJ and the entire staff provide exceptional services not just on the first day you visit but every day after. I received such personalized service and instruction. After doing much research into the Specialized-bicycle I wanted, I still had some questions. CJ answered my questions and didn't try to undercut like many places do. He knew what I wanted and what I would walk out happy with after. He helped me pick out great tires and clipless pedals. And even "trained" me on how to properly use them. There is also a nice community of cyclists that visit the shop and cafe. Community is key. This shop has everything you need and they also have the means to customize wheels etc. I love this place. read more

Just so happened to be in this area riding by the river when the piece connecting my rear derailleur to the frame snapped off. Brought it here. Excellent customer service had someone look at my bike almost right away. They were able to reconstruct it at a very reasonable price quite quickly. I went from thinking my bicycle was going to be out of commission for weeks if not longer to be able to ride the next day. Couldn't be happier. And on top of that just so happen to be looking around for helmets and shoes and one of the employees was able to provide excellent information without being an excessive sales person. I can't say enough nice things about Strictly Bicycles! I used to ride a really old, and somewhat busted, 1970's steel road bike. One day I ambitiously rode this beast from Queens up the 9W. I was really far from home when my tire blew (it seemed so old it might have been original to the bike!) The only bike shop nearby was Strictly Bicycles. Even though they seem to cater to a more elite crowd they never put on airs or disparaged me or my old bike. They were incredibly nice and accommodating- because my bike is so old they didn't cary the tube size I needed so they jury rigged a way to put two tubes into my tire so I could ride across the George Washington Bridge to another bike shop who had the tube I needed. In a city as expensive as New York it's not uncommon to be treated poorly when you're not sporting the most expensive whatever. I've been back to this shop on similarly busted bikes (why do my bikes always break down in NJ? I think I'm cursed) and these guys have never made me feel second class. It's refreshing. On a side note. Observing the other clientele I've seen the most finely honed calf muscles on the east coast. I swear they could cut glass. read more

Popular cycle shop along Hudson Terrace, convenient location for starting or ending a ride. City rides, up to NY state rides, "not supposed to be on the trails" rides, etc. Stopped in to fix my Shimano cleat shoes and they could have just sold me the replacement kit but fixed mine without even charging me. On April 1st 2018, I had a mechanical on 9W and called Strictly to see if someone could pick me up. My cassette locked and threw me off my bike so I couldn't pedal anywhere. Without hesitation, Joanna - one of the owners - herself picked me up. She brought me back to the shop so they could fix my bike - they noticed I was bleeding through my pants, and asked to check my leg. When I lifted my pants, we realized I had split open my knee and needed to go to a hospital for stitches. The team at SB, including a former fireman, calmly patched me up when I froze seeing the deep wound and all the blood - and Joanna again brought me to the nearest hospital and WAITED with me for HOURS until I was seen and my husband could come and get me, keeping me company and entertaining me with stories to keep my mind off of things. Mind you this was EASTER SUNDAY, and they were busy as usual as it was a weekend, and was her DAY OFF. It doesn't stop there. When my husband got there, she still waited and brought both of us back to SB, including his bike, so we could get an Uber with both bikes from SB home to the city. This is the kind of people Joanna, Nelson, and the folks at SB are. They truly care about the cycling community and treat everyone with the same dignity and respect - they even called to check in on me after some time passed. Reading some of the negative reviews, before someone judges, 1) be patient because they're busy and popular for a reason, 2) if you're not happy with something ask to speak to a manager or owner (Joanna/Nelson) - they strive to do right by people at all times, and 3) don't blame them for things they can't control. I am grateful that the SB family were available that day, because it could have been much worse. A wonderful family owned business! I have never had such a pleasant experience at any service-based store. I had the unfortunate experience of crashing my bike. My bike was quite banged up. Most notably, my rear derailleur was completely broken. This is a part that is impossible to find - I scoured the internet and called bike shops all over, to no avail. The staff here can apparently work miracles - they found the part in a few days. It would have been perfectly reasonable for them to say that the part was impossible to find, which would mean paying two grand for an equivalent new group set. They they did not try to push a sale - they only gave me great advice and helped me get back on the road as fast as possible for the least cost. It is worth noting that I have never left a review for any business, but I am taken away by the amazing service here. I can't thank them enough! read more

CJ spent most of the afternoon fitting the bike and making minor part swaps to get everything dialed in perfectly. She couldn't be happier with her new bike. Nelson runs a great business that epitomizes every reason why you would want to shop local and shop small. We have been coming to Strictly for almost three years now. First to get some cheap online bikes assembled, then for service, and now for new bikes and service. Although we have not broken the bank shopping there, we have always been treated like the most important customers. I've been there twice, once for parts and to "look around", and second to pick up a Specialized bike I bought through the Specialized website (that wasn't in stock at any bike shop). I was happy that Specialized drove traffic to local bike shops, i just wish it wasn't this one... The bike I received had deep scratches in the rim that traveled through into the machined braking surface and not only did they willingly send it out the door, but they said they didn't have a means of fixing it and that i shouldn't worry as the soft brake would smooth out the hard metal. After calling the manufacturer they told me to return the bike or just the wheel to the bike... Back to the shop?!?!? If your a roadie and are all into carbon fiber high end road bikes this is the place for you. A staple for all the training rides up 9W or through eastern NJ and up to Piermont, Nyack, and Bear Mountain. Strictly offers the right casual space in the summers where there is a outdoor patio area for cyclists to rest and chill out before continuing in on their ride. Free water is set up as well outside. Love just rocking back in the rocking patio chairs after a hard training ride. It's a pricey shop for service and items but they do a good job at servicing and have a decent selection of items. You'll find high end Pinarello bikes here which is a plush since you hardly see shops carry these in the metropolitan area. Has a great lil cafe for coffee and a quick pastry. Throughout the season you'll even find bike clinics or other bike demoes taking place in their parking lot. I wouldn't stop by if your looking for a commuter bike though. A great place to hang out during a training ride or a bathroom break and also great for emergency servicing or on purchasing a high end bike. read more

I can't say much about the bicycles, clothing, service or accessories, but I dig this shop. They always have music playing when you ride by, and you get a vibe that riders are welcome. I've joined a couple of rides from here. I've biked from Midtown Manhattan and stop by here for a break to use the restroom and refuel on food, coffee and other goodies. Most of the clothes are about the same as what you would get at any bike shop or even online. Of course you can do better online, but you can't sit on your computer in the middle of a ride for a break or chat up some friends and make new ones at home, right? read more

I have been to Strictly many times over the years of cycling past on my way back to the GW Bridge. This shop is a regular stopping point for cyclists out on their ride. The great thing about this shop is that they are friendly to everyone that comes in, whether you are buying a $10K bike or just want to use the bathroom. That is great customer service as the guy who one day uses the bathroom may come back in for a bike and then come back again and again for service. I purchased only a few odds and ends and had some minor mid-ride services done here, but the staff here has always been good and they do a great job fixing little tweaks on my bike. That said, they have an amazing selection of bikes. My most memorable experience here was over the winter, when I was out on a ride and a snow storm rolled into town early. I was soaked and cold and pulled into Strictly. They were very accommodating. I bought new socks and one of the mechanics drove my back to my apartment in Manhattan on his way home from the shop. This place is the best. I, unfortunately, happen to go to Hudson Bikes first. The customer service is so poor, and the guy who I dealt with was obnoxious, I called the place THREE times and no one answered. And so I took a look for other options. Thankfully, I found Strictly Bikes and the customer service so SUPER. There is always someone who is willing to help you. and THEY ANSWER THE PHONE. Hudson Bikes never answers the phone. I wish I had found this place sooner so I wouldn't have wasted my time at Hudson Bikes. My bike is at the shop and I am waiting for the repairs to be done. So I went here today with my friend looking to buy two bikes. Pretty simple. We walked around the store and had to ask the first guy if anyone worked there. We get a response of "I do sometimes". Ok, great. Second guy came up to help and brought down a year old bike, which was deeply discounted (2017 bikes are sticker price and non negotiable). Guy had a new seat put on and it was way too high to ride it comfortably. Asked if the seat could be adjusted and we were told "yeah I'll adjust it if you buy it". WTF? Who says that? We went to a bike shop in North Bergen and got good deals on 2017 full-carbon road bikes and will pay for them when they arrive. Last time I will ever step foot into this place. The douche factor was off the charts and you're a nuisance if you're not covered in full spandex. Sad. read more

I cannot say enough good things about Nelson and his team at Strictly. I was interested in purchasing a new high-end road bike and started by shooting them an email. Nelson responded promptly and put up with my 20 questions back and forth. I had concerns about bike fit and geometry, so he recommended I come in and we do it the right way: He built up a lower spec bike in my same size, invited me to come to the shop for a fit and then take a test ride. I was very happy about the bike and placed an order for a new one in my higher spec. There was never any high pressure sales and he took the time to walk me through all the details of the bike. The bike was delivered on-time and built perfectly. His team accommodated my last minute requests on the day of delivery and performed a final bike fit. On Day 2, I went to update the Di2 firmware and wound up bricking the junction control unit due to a bug in Shimano's software. I felt like an idiot bringing it back to the shop the next day, but Nelson and his team fixed it all up at no charge. I would highly recommend buying from Strictly. read more

First person from Strictly that adjusted my bicycle overlooked a chain link issue that caused an accident, broken derailleur, and dented frame. Owner seemed understanding and agreed to fix my bike and correct his shop's error since his work is "guaranteed". Two weeks later I called the shop and was told the work was completed. I went to the shop to pick up my bike and noticed they had done nothing to the frame and didn't even replace my chain. I asked why no work was done on the frame like the owner had promised and the response I got was, "we don't have enough time for that." On top of that, my front derailleur wouldn't shift from the big ring to the little ring after their "completed work". I had to do my own research and set my own limit screws after this professional bike shop worked on my bike. I wanted to like this shop but I will never go back there and I highly recommend taking your bicycle anywhere else - couldn't be more disappointed with everything about this business. read more

In a nutshell: Poor service; complacent management. If you're not already one of their regular customers, forget about it, the staff will chat away and you will be ignored. Dropped my road bike off on a Monday for an end-of-season tune up and scheduled to pick it up on Friday. Showed up Saturday morning and the bike hadn't even been worked on; it sat in their shop for a whole week. Only when I showed my ticket/receipt did they begin to work on it and was told to come back in 20min. So let me get this this straight: The work takes 20min, they had 5 business days to complete it and still missed delivery. If that is not the very definition of management incompetence, I don't know what is. When I returned to pick up my bike, the drivetrain, brakes, and wheels/tires were tuned but they didn't even bother to wipe down the frame with a shop cloth. There was grease on my down tube and chainstays. Furthermore, I asked for a discount because they failed to deliver on-time and was told "No, it's just that time of the year". Failure is apparently accepted by management and for the prices they charge, this is simply unacceptable. Sounds like other Yelpers have faced similar customer service issues so this is not a one-off issue, it is systematic. read more

Everything is a matter of taste. In order to get to the bicycles, you have to wade through a ground floor filled with clothing and accessories. None of the bikes in the showroom are actually rideable--you have to wait for the mechanics to do something or other for ten minutes for every bike you want to try. The mechanics are in the basement where you never see them. While you are waiting the salesman will urge you to try something at the cafe (another one of those things you walked past to get to the bikes). This is all a pretty good indication of the shop's priorities. If those sound like the priorities you want your bike shop to have, then you are welcome to it. Maybe I had a big sign on my head that read: "This girl doesn't know what she's talking about." That would explain why when I told the guy I didn't want a bike with carbon parts he went off on a lecture about how great carbon parts are. That's not the point. I do understand it might be an emotional issue for some people because there are some misconceptions about carbon. The point is that if you are touring in Alaska and your carbon seatstays break, you will quickly be hitch hiking in Alaska instead. When I said I was hoping for a bike with V-brakes, he decided to lecture me about how caliper brakes are actually better. The point is I find it easy to adjust and repair v-brakes myself. And you know, it's really not that difficult to ask the customer _why_ they think they want v-brakes or not to have carbon parts. We both might have learned something. When I mentioned I might like to try a steel frame because it was for touring he actually said: "No one makes steel touring bikes anymore." When I went to try the bike, somehow they had put together a small when we'd talked about my trying a medium. I will say they have a fitting station where they help adjust a bike you're trying which a lot of shops in Manhattan don't have. read more

I'm writing this review on behalf of my husband who had a bike built by Strictly Bicycles in June 2012. Great shop in terms of merchandise - I always find myself buying something on my way back from a Nyack ride or something - whether it's a jersey or a Probar or something, they have cool items and a great selection of stuff, and it's a fun place to grab a macchiatto and watch some racing on the TVs. They have some super high end really nice bikes, too. Ones that the manager has admitted carrying because middle aged white guys who are bored will spend lots of money on them (whoa dude). Anyway, that's where the positives end. I will probably update this review when I get the full details from my husband, but here's what I remember from the situation: My husband wanted to build up a bike - he wanted the new black on black CAAD 10 frame, and Strictly was the only shop in the area that carried it, so he did it through them. He had them put new SRAM Red components on, as well as some other fancy parts. Easy enough, right? Well, after picking up the bike, he immediately noticed there were issues with the crank which needed to be adjusted again... a couple of weeks later, he noticed the bottom bracket was secured with a wrong piece and after a couple of hundred miles, it was starting to come loose. The mechanic actually admitted that they used whatever they had that was similar but that they should have used the correct piece... the manager tried to salvage the relationship by offering my husband a $250 gift card. Meanwhile, my husband and I go on separate rides one weekend in August, and he was going to stop at Strictly to get some more things adjusted that just didn't seem right before heading up to Nyack... I ride to Piermont and decided to stop at Strictly on the way back, and my husband is STILL there, HOURS later. Turns out, the whole crank needed to be replaced - the mechanic would bring it down to the shop to adjust, bring it up again, my husband would ride it around the parking lot, bring it back in... this went on and on and on - the mechanic was such an idiot - he was seriously pissed off when my husband brought the bike back in because he couldn't even turn the crank fully - the mechanic had screwed it up so bad, the manager yelled at him in front of us "how can you give that back to a customer without even testing it?!" The mechanic could not believe he would have to re-install a whole new crank and tried everything to get out of it. It was pretty unbelievable. My husband spent A LOT of money getting this bike built, and ended up spending A LOT more money getting it tuned up and re-checked by another shop because he was so shaken by the incompetent mechanic there. If you want some cool gear, Strictly is fine, but if you want any repairs or tune ups, get ready to be floored with the poor service and shoddy mechanics! read more

First of all, for you Bay Area cyclists who think that NYC can't hold a candle to road-riding in the Bay Area, you're sorely mistaken. NY has a pretty awesome cycling community, yo! I witnessed this on a great century ride from Manhattan to NJ. But, about 10 miles into the ride, I really needed a toilet, and was afraid that between the concrete roadways of the GW Bridge and NJ's countryside, I'd have to start digging a hole. But, luckily, Strictly Bicycles positioned themselves perfectly along a busy road-riding route only a few miles from the GW Bridge. One of the cleanest bicycle shops I've come across. The folks inside were helpful. I was able to pick up some much needed Gu for the hills I was about to climb later in the day, and most importantly, a clean porcelain toilet to make the rest of my ride less uncomfortable, if you know what I mean. Should you want to lounge with fellow-cyclists before or after a long ride, the cafe here offers a good venue for it! Wish California had more bike shop cafes like this! read more

This place is a cycle haven - for uptight New Yorker cycle-snob types who come over the GW Bridge from their overpriced Upper West Side co-ops. Its all high-end stuff here - if its not the very best, then they don't sell it. Every customer in there is a cycle-snob - Campagnola blah blah blah. Hard shoes blah blah blah. Felt toilet seats blah blah blah. If you are looking for a local, regular bicycle shop that can sell you a nice bike at a good price, this place is not for you. If you are Lance Armstrong, and you are also looking to score, then you will love it here. Break out your fat wallet rich guy - shame you don't have a wallet because it wont fit in your spandex cycle shorts that can only carry your American Express Black Card. Unfortunately, this shop isn't going to last. Why? Because they have no clue that they're there to sell to customers. Customers are paying YOU. Every time I go there I feel like they think they're paying ME to be there. Folks need to get trained on customer service. Been cycling for 16 years and I've never seen worse. This is a family run business but it actually feels like a huge corporation is running the shop. I recently saw a woman ask an employee whether they carried her size for an s works shoe. The way the employee needlessly intimidated her... and the way he spoke to her in a very condescending tone... and the way he was just silent for twenty seconds before answering her question while not even looking her in the eye - all of this just completely disgusted me. People, go elsewhere to make any significant purchases. Support a business that doesn't muddy the waters. Cycling is for everyone, someone is always beginning. SB is shrinking the market by allowing jerks to be their employees. This is bad for the sport. I have a Pinarello but also have an old Schwinn model that my father gave to me ten years ago. When I take my Pinarello they are nice. When I bring my old Schwinn they don't take me seriously. The thing is, they just don't remember you. Not only that. They get noticeably pissed off if you just look and don't buy. Wtf. Smart customers never just buy on impulse. It seems they think their customers are primarily people who will just pull the trigger on a huge purchase without sufficient research. Good luck SB. read more

Not my favorite bike shop. I have visited this shop a number of times in hopes that my opinion would change, but after numerous visits over the course of the past year my experiences have remained the same - poor poor service. I first came here about a year ago when I moved to the area and need a new road bike. I came in looking and ready to buy a bike and was offered little to no help. I was just told that the bikes are upstairs and I could look around. The bike selection itself was okay, not exactly what I'm used to seeing in bike shops in San Francisco but it wasn't horrible - I imagine that they can put in an order for any bike too but it's nice to be able to see/test out as many bikes as possible. After receiving inattentive service (basically no service), I decided to take my search elsewhere and ended up buying a great bike at Grove Street Bicycles in Jersey City - great prices, better service and 3.5% tax! My other visits were during bike rides up to Palisades Park/9W. I've stopped in here for random needs while on a ride and also at the end of a ride just looking around for gear or other items for the bike. Every time I have come in the service has been lacking, either no one is there to help me or when I ask for help they seem bothered and often times don't know or don't have the item I am looking for. The times I have found what I wanted and gone to checkout, it has been a slow and painful process as they employees act like I am inconveniencing them when I need to checkout - and afterwards, no thank yous or anything. Just not friendly service and pretty snobby place overall. The parking lot of the shop does have a nice area for cyclists to stop and hang out, while I haven't really taken advantage of that area, every time I pass by it looks like many people do enjoy it and I would say this is the best part of the shop. I had high hopes for this bike shop and wanted to like it but it has been a disappointment. My advice - take your business elsewhere - there are so many more bike shops around that would be more appreciative of your business! read more

This review is a long time coming. SB is my local bike shop` and I've really wanted to give Nelson every benefit of the doubt. But EVERY time I've walked in there, I walked out feeling I just got fleeced or just escaped a fleecing. It's a bike shop that caters to pretentious rich fools who enjoy displaying wealth by overpaying for anything bike related. Probably a great store for those who intend to spend more than $10,000 on a bike with all the trimmings. But just stop in for some parts or accessories and you better hold on to your wallet. If you enjoy paying $50 for something that costs $15 (with free shipping) on Amazon you will love Strictly Bicycles. For the rest of us, any other bike shop will better serve. And other bike shops won't make you feel like you're a trespasser at a private club for just not wanting to get ripped off. read more

We had a great experience at Strictly Bicycles. Our salesperson, CJ, was fabulous. He's extremely knowledgeable about e-bikes and recommended the ones that would work best for our height/weight. He let us ride them around the block a few times until we were comfortable and patiently adjusted the seat height and positioning incrementally a number of times. Strictly Bicycles is an amazing bike shop. It's not like any other bike shop in the New York metro area, in so much as it focusing on not necessarily the most popular bikes, but rather on the best bicycles. It's easy for a bike shop to follow others, but it tough to lead. If you want "best in breed" bikes, wheels, tires, pedals, clothing or accessories, this is the right ship for you. The staff is knowledgeable. The service department is trained on SRAM, Campy and Shimano as well as sophisticated frames and wheels. If you want quality, this is the right place. read more
