The only Pub in Straffan. Simple fare that centers on Pizza. An extension of the K Club with attentive staff.

McEvoy's - The canal and the pub

The staff and the crowd of regulars at this charming pub are among the most welcoming we have experienced in all of Ireland! They were as excited to tell us about their country and as they were to ask about ours! They were funny and friendly and the highlight of our day. Aaaand should the Sam Maguire ever make it back to Mayo, we should return and celebrate with Sean!

Sunny Day Central…read more Nothing beats sitting in a beer garden on a Sunday in Ireland. Absolutely nothing! Except maybe sitting in a beer garden on a Sunday in Ireland on the water. Now that takes some beating. McEvoys is one of those places that is just made for one of those ultra-rare-not-a-cloud-in-the-sky days. Set right on the canal just outside of Celbridge is this gorgeous pub. Full of walkers who have come along the canal on a stroll with their dogs plus lots of locals and even some lucky houseboat owners. The mood is always friendly and jovial, with an atmosphere that's second to none. Here you will find: - A pre-pint walk along the canal - A load of benches with a view of the boats and the water - A super cosy and comfy bar inside if it gets a tad chilly in the evening (you know it will!) - A great pint of the black stuff - A dog friendly bar To be honest, whether it's raining or shining, I'd still recommend this spot. Gwan the outskirts!

Good bar food…read more American chicken served hot. Easy to substitute for other stuff on menu. Spotlessly clean..... So clean it was impressive. Reasonably priced and staff appreciated a tip. Wished she hadn't said "Have a nice day" though. When Euros say that I always think they are taking the piss. I'd eat here again .... Excellent pub grub style food.

"The Birthplace of Guinness". Well ye can't get better than that!…read more The Village Inn is on the site of the old brewery in which Arthur Guinness brewed his first beer way back in 1709. With a pedigree like this, you would expect to find the finest pint of Guinness in the land within those four walls. And you wouldn't be let down. Creamy consistency. Perfect pour. Careful consideration of the Black Stuff. Beyond the Guinness, the management of this watering hole take a commendable interest in keeping things lively and the regulars (and not-so-regulars!) stimulated and happy to be there. From drinks promotions to a trad night on a Thursday, various bands on a Sunday (excellent Sunday Sesh to be had here folks, for those inclined), to poker nights, six screens for watching sport in the lounge, and a function room with private drinks taps on each table. Bar staff are really friendly here too - they've all been there for ages so are well versed on the lay of the land. The lounge serves breakfast from 10am to 12 noon, carvery lunch is also available daily and bar food is served throughout the day. Above all, the pub has a warm, welcoming atmosphere. There is a lounge and a bar, with a perfect little snug right next to the bar if you can get down there in time and beat the locals. If you ARE in the bar, make sure you also save all your receipts, because every Sunday, each receipt is put in a draw to win a pot of money to go towards funding those ever-so-tasty beverages (minimum of €500 each week!!!!)

Hmm this is a toughie to mark…read more On the one hand, I can't stand these types of places. On the other hand, as 'these places' go, it's probably one of the best! Right let's go for the objective marking. ("Marking"?! Do I think I'm a teacher or something?!) - It does what it says on the tin. It's a general, all ages late bar that's there for havin the craic. Pretentiousness can be left firmly at the door - When you are going in for a full night of popular music, you may as well hear it from a live band, versus an awful DJ (who does come on after the live band btw..) - As mentioned above - it's all ages. If you're a cougar on the prowl, there's plenty of pray here for ya, but if you're wanting to celebrate a 40th birthday, or equally a 21st, there's room for everyone in the Roost! - Drinks aren't too expensive, and there's no cover charge - Bouncers are friendly and there's rarely trouble here besides drunken ladies falling down the stairs (of which there are many - watch out if you're debuting your new 5 inchers in here, ladies!) - It doubles up as a nice quiet and relatively cosy pub during the day. So there ye have it. If you're going, embrace it, and you'll have a grand old time. If you've got a hankering for some black rimmed glasses, skinny jeans and hipstagramation, this is probably not your spot.

I'm 50 years old and aside from some accidentally swallowed spoiled milk this may be the worst meal…read moreI've ever had. It was so bad it turned funny. We were travelling on the nearby M4 and randomly visited this pub in a college town very hungry for a late lunch. The environment was nice with candles and a cozy feel but our 'strict schoolteacher' waitress left a lot to be desired in the attitude category. Poor students probably mean crappy tips and we got the tail end of a bad lunch rush. No matter, we ordered the "Hot stuffed roast beef sandwich with vegetable soup or fries" - 7 euro. I don't exactly know what was presented 20 minutes later, but here's a description. The soup was a sallow opaque gruel more like a gritty yellow/puce bisque but without quality or flavor, a bit like wallpaper glue in texture. No vegetables I could see survived...none. Perhaps it wasn't vegetable soup in hindsight, but it was warm, neutral and nontoxic so I had three spoonfuls before I quit it - my girl didn't make it that far. She was distracted by the entree which consisted of two mushy cold toast slices with a firm grey organic mass in the center that I took to be meat of some sort. Tough, completely without flavor and overcooked my post mortem was this was a boiled bovine something at one time and then maybe it was microwaved to withdraw any remaining taste, I don't know. It was laughably inedible and dissecting the sandwich we later discovered some soggy little sponge cubes that probably were the 'stuffing', though we couldn't be sure, as by this time they had attached themselves to the bread to make a small henge around the meat sacrifice. My lady finished her pint and we laughed off the experience. After a while gave up on our waitress again who perhaps was hiding out of shame and eventually threw a 20 euro on the table and left. I'm sure this is a great place most of the time and we just had a rare lousy experience.

After getting settled in, our amazing hosts (Tony and Iris) recommended The Dew Drop Inn for our dinner. We stopped in and were seated promptly. The location was a 5 minute walk from where we were staying, and is absolutely cozy and lovely inside. They also have a patio (where we sat the next night!) We ordered: The fish and chips, confit of duck, and sticky toffee pudding for dessert. Let me tell you, we eat a lot of fish and chips. We also travelled all over Ireland (and Scotland) for a month. The Dew Drop Inn is tied for the BEST fish and chips we've ever eaten. (The other location is the Dingle Ahoy! cart/window in Dingle.) They were absolutely perfect. Crisp, lots of fish, well seasoned. The chips were a revelation as well. I may well be ruined for mushy peas for life, because these were exquisate. Also...the confit of duck was SO good, we decided to come back the next day and order that again!! The second night we were there, I sadly don't recall exactly what we had, but I believe it was a potato soup, and seabass. They were all delicious. We honestly wished we had more time in the area, and part of the reason was to try more food and drinks here!!! The cocktails and beer were grand, and the service was absolutely perfect. We absolutely plan to return to Ireland, and to stay with the same B&B hosts (I want them to adopt us, they were that incredible), so we will absolutely be returning to The Dew Drop Inn.
