    The Village Inn - Front

Good bar food…read more American chicken served hot. Easy to substitute for other stuff on menu. Spotlessly clean..... So clean it was impressive. Reasonably priced and staff appreciated a tip. Wished she hadn't said "Have a nice day" though. When Euros say that I always think they are taking the piss. I'd eat here again .... Excellent pub grub style food.

"The Birthplace of Guinness". Well ye can't get better than that!…read more The Village Inn is on the site of the old brewery in which Arthur Guinness brewed his first beer way back in 1709. With a pedigree like this, you would expect to find the finest pint of Guinness in the land within those four walls. And you wouldn't be let down. Creamy consistency. Perfect pour. Careful consideration of the Black Stuff. Beyond the Guinness, the management of this watering hole take a commendable interest in keeping things lively and the regulars (and not-so-regulars!) stimulated and happy to be there. From drinks promotions to a trad night on a Thursday, various bands on a Sunday (excellent Sunday Sesh to be had here folks, for those inclined), to poker nights, six screens for watching sport in the lounge, and a function room with private drinks taps on each table. Bar staff are really friendly here too - they've all been there for ages so are well versed on the lay of the land. The lounge serves breakfast from 10am to 12 noon, carvery lunch is also available daily and bar food is served throughout the day. Above all, the pub has a warm, welcoming atmosphere. There is a lounge and a bar, with a perfect little snug right next to the bar if you can get down there in time and beat the locals. If you ARE in the bar, make sure you also save all your receipts, because every Sunday, each receipt is put in a draw to win a pot of money to go towards funding those ever-so-tasty beverages (minimum of €500 each week!!!!)

The bar side is a small wooden door that does not look appealing or welcoming with a marking that says bar over the door. There is a tiny bar with many men sitting drinking their beers. I found one empty seat and bartender came over to ask what I wanted. Beer: got a local IPA made my Dew Drop Brewery. I selected this because it was the stronger of the two IPAs available. Food: pizza but the kitchen was closed. I was able to get a pizza delivered to the bar by the hotel. The pizza was just ok. But I was hungry. Come here for the beer and meet the locals. I had so much fun talking with them! What a hidden gem if you are willing to strike up a conversation with a local stranger. They are very friendly. Bathroom: there was a bathroom just for men. I did not see a ladies bathroom. Maybe it was in the Lounge side??

The Straffan Inn is an authentic pub that serves up beer, wine & liquor. the selection is wonderful, with a focus on Irish Beverages. The food (Pizzas, Wings & Ribs) fit right in, and are delicious. The best part though.. the people! Both the Service Staff and the Locals that occupy the seats are fantastic and so kind! Note that there are two parts to the Straffon Inn.. The Lounge is larger & has an outdoor patio. The Bar is smaller and that's where the locals usually are to be found. This is a MUST VISIT if you are in the area!!

    Abbey Lodge Macmamees Pub

I've been going to this pub for twenty years since it was called Greg Allens in the 80's. I like…read morethe atmosphere and the clientele that frequent the place. The drink is always good and the food is pretty good too. Upstairs there is a restaurant where you can sit and look out over the river Liffey. They do very good steaks but tend to overdo the amount of onions. The only downside to the Abbey Lodge is the management, extremely unfriendly and non communicative even to regulars. They do a fairly good trade but i feel they could increase they customer numbers considerably if they made even a modest effort at being a bit more welcoming and appreciative to their existing clientele.

Aaah MacNamees. Very…read moretempted to go with a two-star-er for this one, but it's a nice day and I'm feeling charitable. Truth be told as well, it's not the facilities that would tip this place into two star territory, but the management that unfortunately has too great a bearing on the customer experience. Situated on the bridge just before you go into Celbridge, is the Abbey Lodge, or MacNamees as it's known locally. This pub is a bit of an institution in the area. It's been here for years, and was extended and renovated when the good times were still rolling. This means that it's been done up to a really high standard, and, cosmetically, is actually quite a nice addition to the Celbridge town landscape. There is a cosy bar downstairs in which most sports are shown. Upstairs, there's a restaurant area and giant cavernous bar. This is generally quite empty save for big nights like New Year's Eve, Stephens' Night and private parties. In which case it gets mobbed, you'll have to put up with surly bouncers, and you'll have to drink your 8 yoyo drink kout of a plastic cup. In which case, you'd really have a better time getting yourself a six pack of Dutch Gold (Celbridge can du jour) and sitting at the Liffey! (Not really, but still...!) Good points? They do nice food here - the steak on the stone / sizzling fajitas tend to be the most popular dishes, and it's a grand spot to sit on a Sunday. There's also a pretty sizeable smoking area out the front. There is also free parking outside for regulars. The problem is the definition of the word 'regular'. 'Lots of money coming in the till' I suspect is the definition for McNamees. If you're not fulfilling this obligation, there is a very real chance you may get clamped, so beware of that one! If you come here on a nice quiet day, you're likely to enjoy your sup. If you come here on a busy day, think again.
