The staff and the crowd of regulars at this charming pub are among the most welcoming we have experienced in all of Ireland! They were as excited to tell us about their country and as they were to ask about ours! They were funny and friendly and the highlight of our day. Aaaand should the Sam Maguire ever make it back to Mayo, we should return and celebrate with Sean!

Now that takes some beating. McEvoys is one of those places that is just made for one of those ultra-rare-not-a-cloud-in-the-sky days. Set right on the canal just outside of Celbridge is this gorgeous pub. Full of walkers who have come along the canal on a stroll with their dogs plus lots of locals and even some lucky houseboat owners. The mood is always friendly and jovial, with an atmosphere that's second to none. Here you will find: - A pre-pint walk along the canal - A load of benches with a view of the boats and the water - A super cosy and comfy bar inside if it gets a tad chilly in the evening (you know it will!) - A great pint of the black stuff - A dog friendly bar To be honest, whether it's raining or shining, I'd still recommend this spot. Gwan the outskirts!

Good bar food…read more American chicken served hot. Easy to substitute for other stuff on menu. Spotlessly clean..... So clean it was impressive. Reasonably priced and staff appreciated a tip. Wished she hadn't said "Have a nice day" though. When Euros say that I always think they are taking the piss. I'd eat here again .... Excellent pub grub style food.

"The Birthplace of Guinness". Well ye can't get better than that!…read more The Village Inn is on the site of the old brewery in which Arthur Guinness brewed his first beer way back in 1709. With a pedigree like this, you would expect to find the finest pint of Guinness in the land within those four walls. And you wouldn't be let down. Creamy consistency. Perfect pour. Careful consideration of the Black Stuff. Beyond the Guinness, the management of this watering hole take a commendable interest in keeping things lively and the regulars (and not-so-regulars!) stimulated and happy to be there. From drinks promotions to a trad night on a Thursday, various bands on a Sunday (excellent Sunday Sesh to be had here folks, for those inclined), to poker nights, six screens for watching sport in the lounge, and a function room with private drinks taps on each table. Bar staff are really friendly here too - they've all been there for ages so are well versed on the lay of the land. The lounge serves breakfast from 10am to 12 noon, carvery lunch is also available daily and bar food is served throughout the day. Above all, the pub has a warm, welcoming atmosphere. There is a lounge and a bar, with a perfect little snug right next to the bar if you can get down there in time and beat the locals. If you ARE in the bar, make sure you also save all your receipts, because every Sunday, each receipt is put in a draw to win a pot of money to go towards funding those ever-so-tasty beverages (minimum of €500 each week!!!!)

Nice pub in the centre of Maynooth…read more Decor is new Irish bar in a box (like so many nowadays) but is tastefully done. Clean warm and spacious. Was in for Sunday lunch here and ordered the Sirloin Steak (€15 good value) and was looking forward to it but somebody made a mistake with the menu. Not the friendly waitresses fault and I ordered the Turkey and ham instead (I felt it was far enough past Christmas to start enjoying this dish again). Food arrived in good time and I had ordered no veg but half chips/half potatoes. Somebody is on serious portion control here. Not that there wasn't enough but I may be used to a bit more being piled on my plate. One roasty and one scoop of mash and a side plate not over flowing with chip. My only other minor issue was another one or two more fluid oz of gravy wouldn't have gone to waste. Food was very tasty and I polished the lot (portion size was probably spot on). Followed it up with the very tasty chocolate fudge cake with ice cream. Toilets down the stairs. TV's on around the place with sport of the day. All in all no real complaints if I'm being honest. Staff exceptionally friendly and I'll be back.

The bar side is a small wooden door that does not look appealing or welcoming with a marking that says bar over the door. There is a tiny bar with many men sitting drinking their beers. I found one empty seat and bartender came over to ask what I wanted. Beer: got a local IPA made my Dew Drop Brewery. I selected this because it was the stronger of the two IPAs available. Food: pizza but the kitchen was closed. I was able to get a pizza delivered to the bar by the hotel. The pizza was just ok. But I was hungry. Come here for the beer and meet the locals. I had so much fun talking with them! What a hidden gem if you are willing to strike up a conversation with a local stranger. They are very friendly. Bathroom: there was a bathroom just for men. I did not see a ladies bathroom. Maybe it was in the Lounge side??

The Lounge is larger & has an outdoor patio. The Bar is smaller and that's where the locals usually are to be found. This is a MUST VISIT if you are in the area!!
