Doheny & Nesbitt was our first pub stop in Ireland. It was the day we landed, and after taking the cool Vintage Tea tour around town. After the bus dropped us off, we took the short walk over to enjoy a wee pint. Gayle, Fern, and Don chose Guinness Stout, while I went for a Murphy's version. We arrived late afternoon when the there were available seats. Service was good, people were friendly, and this place soaks of Irish history going way back. We were also excited to be in Ireland and perhaps let our conversations go on a bit long. By the time we looked up, the place was packed and it was time to move on. Grateful for the recommendation from our concierge it was a treat to take in the history and decor of Doherty & Nesbitt! It took a beat to find a table with enough seating we were able to swoop in and grab but it was worth the wait! The energy and music is buzzing and the food and drinks certainly match! My mum talked about the amazing smoked salmon the entire trip and it was so flavorful with the soda bread. I had Bangers and Mash while my husband had Fish n Chips. Our first stop while arriving in Dublin. Great service upon entering the pub and the bartender gave us some good insights on what to do while being in Dublin. Ultimately it was a lovely chat and made it a good start of our trip. I had my first pint of Guinness I absolutely loved it and became my favorite beer. To go along with the pint, we had cottage pie (gluten free) and a classic toastie. They were both quite excellent and blew our expectations out of the water. While in Dublin visiting for the first time, I had a list of pubs that I wanted to check out and Doheny & Nesbitt was on the list because it was a historic pub that has live music. My husband and I did visit D&N (on Thursday, 10/08/2025) but sadly, we didn't enjoy our experience at this charming pub. This pub has multiple floors and each floor was packed full of young adults when we went. And I do mean packed FULL. The noise level w/ everyone talking over each other was insane! There was no way we could enjoy our drinks at this pub. Even the bartenders looked frustrated w/ it all. There was a performer who was going to start playing about 15 minutes after we got there so we stayed & had a drink at the bar & waited to see if the crowd was going to lower the talking once the music started but NOPE, the noise level stayed at 100. We finished our drinks and left. Super disappointing for sure. read more

I couldn't leave Ireland without trying a traditional Irish Stew and this place was suggested by the pub down the way. They were out of take away containers so we opted to sit inside. The Victorian styled interior has a dim, close-knit layout and plenty of period pieces to appreciate. Though it could have used a touch more salt, the stew was hearty, the mashed potatoes on top were creamy, and the lamb melted like butter. read more

So this place is a really good time. 3 floors of fun. I had one of my best night in Dublin at this pub. We went here a couple times. The drinks were good. They pour a good Guinness. Good beer selection. Good gin selection. Good pub food. But when live music is playing...it's a party! We had the pleasure of seeing Fin Furrey play and the whole place was singing and dancing. It was so much fun!! I can't wait to go back here. Oh and the bartenders are great. But when it's really busy, it's hard to tell cause the staff is so busy at work. Great crowd too! read more

Came out after an afternoon of learning to Irish dance and this was the perfect Pub. We got the Plater for Two - everything on our try was delicious. Good service, it was packed and they checked on us often. Live band, multiple stories, with different vibes and decor. Definitely recommend, I think we got a drink from each bartender! read more

Was just looking for some food to warm my stomach on a chilling Sunday night and walked into a complete and pleasant surprise of 100% traditional Irish pub experience. Skillful fiddler and guitarist playing live Irish country music. All the Gaelic football jersey and mementos on the wall. Cellars packed with Irish whiskies. Lively vibe. Had a lovely pint of freshly poured Guinness (of course) and a bowl of beef and Guinness stew (of course). The stew was nicely done. The broth was neither too thin or too thick and was packed with spicy aroma all around, all the veggies were braised to soft texture, and the beef packed beefy savory taste and bouncy texture of lean Irish beef. We were visiting Dublin and asked hotel staff for a locals spot that would not be full of tourists only and they suggested this. It was a brief walk from our hotel and the servers themselves were a little hit or miss, the food was GREAT the pints were perfect and they had a nice liquor selection. I have a gluten sensitivity and I ate very well here with the shepherds pie, Irish stew, and baked potatoes offered. They have live music nightly which was played at a normal volume to be appreciated without having to shout over. I had a lovely time here, so much so that we came back 2 nights in a row! We went here and sat outside, because both floors inside were packed due to a match that was on TV. Still, service was fast and friendly. This is an extremely popular spot with traditional Irish dishes and drink, worth the stop. The Bangers and Mash were excellent! The gravy was very flavorful, and the mushy peas (don't let that scare you) were also delicious. The Fish and Chips, however, were just ok. The "chips" were more American fries, served thin and a little too crispy for our taste. The coating on the fish was also a little too crispy for our taste. read more

Good ambience and service but the food was average. Shepherds pie was good as expected and my wife's salmon salad was decent. However I had the steak sandwich and every bite but one was laden with gristle and fat. The steak was a thin and depressing offering on par with an IHOP or Waffle House steak. Low quality. Reliable Irish pub food priced slightly higher than most. We grabbed a bite on our first night in Dublin. Food was slightly salty but good. Service by bartender was friendly, the waitress was very curt and to the point, don't know if she even cracked a smile. We tried Fish and Chips 4.5 stars, huge fresh piece of fish, fries were house cut and perfectly done, tartar sauce was on point, mush peas were gross..sorry...and side salad had an unexpected curry flavored dressing, not my favorite. Historic Pub with lots of nooks and crannies full of history. A local hangout that is welcoming to the many tourist that frequent the Pub. The bartender was more than happy to chat about the history of the Pub, even providing postcards and pamphlets. Best pint of Guinness I have had in Ireland, and I have been to Ireland nine times. I had Fish and Chips, (I know, such a cliche.) The Cod was big, tender and flaky, cooked to crispy perfection. It even came with a salad! This Pub/restaurant is on multiple levels. I went to this bar during a quiet period in the afternoon and was bitterly disappointed. I ordered a pint of Guinness and whilst it arrived very quickly, almost too quickly, it tasted bad. When I asked the barman to change it as it was not a good pint, I got a gruff and rude reply. Let's just say, after this, I will never be back and advise anyone to go to one of the many other good pubs in Dublin. Maybe I got the pub and/or the barman at a bad time but the experience was so bad that I won't take a chance on this pub again. Enjoyed this pub for a private party event and it was rockin'! We utilized the private L-shaped space on the very top floor. It was perfect for a group of about 40 peeps and we even had space for a DJ! Also, the restrooms were right outside our room so that was very convenient! The space overlooks Baggot Street and was just right for a group of peeps who could mill around our private bar area and chat or make use of the larger floor space for dancing. They also served up a nice platter of chicken strips and potato wedges to absorb all that alcohol intake. Everyone was happy - especially me after five Gin & Tonics... ;) I'd return here to check out the main bar areas and would consider it for a casual private party. Now this is what I call an old man's pub. Don't get me wrong, it's a great spot, but there's loads of 'Dads' everywhere. It's a realy guys pub - all my lad friends like to go here for pints. There's something really Irish about this place that I love, but the simplest way to describe it is that it's a pub. Plain and simple! It's always so busy at the weekend with lots of the Dads, middle aged, and some young people. It's a mix really I guess! The last time I was here it was so jammers that I couldn't find my group of friends. We searched everywhere, and eventually found them in the tiny little upstairs smoking area. Disclaimer. I'm from the US. Came because it looked neat and served lunch near the museum and govt buildings. Three in our group and we all ordered different dishes. Not one of us left satisfied. Meatballs , Shepard's pie and salmon open face sand which. My sister didn't like the sammie bc it was cold... As it should have been but the menu does not tell you that. Located in the center of town near everything (well . . . not everything) - the Doheny and Nesbitt pub is a great place for a pint and a bite to eat. There is so much history and so many great conversations going on in the nooks and crannies. There are multiple "bars" in the pub and it can be a bit confusing to make your way around - ask for directions. The staff are great and really eager to help. The food is so-so - with the exception of the fish-n-chips. They are great! I loved the fish. It was flakey, light and amazingly delicate. The french fries were some of the best I've ever had. Honestly. Really great stuff. One of the best parts of the pub is the fact that they have O'Hara's Irish Pale Ale on draft. I love O'Hara's and it is not easily found in all the pubs in Dublin. The long and short of my review - great fish-and-chips, wonderful service and great draft beer. read more

I love Doheny Nesbit and am a regular visitor. It is a quintessential Irish pub especially the front section where they still have two little snugs and the original bar from when the pub first opened. They have manged to keep all of the old charm of the pub which has been there since 1860 (ish) and the building is now a protected structure. Due to it's proximity to The Dail it tends to attract members of the legal profession, journalists and politicians but don't let that put you off - haha ! It is pretty much always busy but especially so at lunch time and on match days. The lunch is really good, super fast and not bad value - I am a big fan of the baked potato. The staff are incredibly friendly and also very efficient If downstairs is too full check upstairs as they also serve lunch up there. They have function rooms upstairs that can be hired for parties. read more

Basically it is a old man's pub. Antique decoration. That is cool, I like those places too, especially when I am not in a party mood - like that day. Old being the operative word. its always full of older people. nothing wrong with older people. nothing at all. but it affects the atmosphere a bit i feel. on the night of the 12 pubs of Christmas however its a different story. the old men are joined by throngs of people in Christmas jumpers as they make their way along baggott street, most of them are drunk because there are on the 9th of 10th pub or so. it gets good then. its the only reason i would go in here really. nothing wrong with the pub, just old. read more
