Service: 0/5 Food: N/A After seeing that this was the go-to spot for some authentic Irish food and reading up a bit on its history, I couldn't wait to visit and try their shepherd's pie. I got in and asked about whether we had to wait to be seated and was told it was open seating! Excellent. We sat ourselves and, after waiting a bit, pulled the menu from the table next door and started reviewing the menu items, shifting around slightly to allow some other young ladies space to sit as well. After waiting about 10 minutes, and seeing those young ladies getting served ahead of us, I went up to the bar and asked about placing an order since we weren't serviced, and placed my order there. I told her we hadn't selected our drinks yet and will submit an order for those soon. Got back to my seat and the waitress who served the neighboring group ahead of us finally popped up to give us utensils and take our menu, which I held on to telling her that we were still using it (since we were still figuring out our drinks order). Realizing the general lack of attention that we were receiving, I cancelled our order and we left, heading to Slattery's instead. A sucky experience to be sure but onward and upward. read more

We had the best time here! Michael is the best bartender ever and took great care of us while in Ireland. Molly makes the best Irish Coffee. The only regret I have is I couldn't bring them back to the USA and be able to go see them daily like we did while in Dublin. They even bought us a notebook and wrote in it for our anniversary. The fish and chips there are wonderful too. Michael really took care of us and I will miss our nightly visit to see them. Love this place. If you are in Ireland please go here! I DIG IT! It's old, it's traditional, and not so touristy (even though I am one). Across the street is another bar (Jack Nealon's) that supposedly pours the best Guinness on tap. But it just sucks they were busy as hell, so a coworker and I decided to kick it here instead. And I actually liked it here, but didn't love it. With the bar being pretty small, it too can get crowded. We kicked it at the bar with patrons trying to buy drinks over our shoulder. I mean it's typical to squeeze in-between patrons at a bar, but this was a bit too close for comfort. I can see why most peeps headed to the "function room" lounge area upstairs. It also seems like a place where you can catch a game or football match. As far as grabbing a beer, I didn't really have any issue with the bartender as we were served a varietal of Guinness on tap. The decor is also pretty cool too, especially with that big taxidermy boar head, some old photos along the walls, and a few antique items. I'd say, if you want to kick it in a traditional Irish style bar with less people at times, then this is one worth checking out. Although the Boar's Head isn't as popular as the bars down Grafton street, but I'd rather be here than there. I can't review their food, but I heard their stew is good. The wife and I had never been to an actual Irish pub before, so walking in here felt a little awkward. The place was full of people (seats about 20) with locals enjoying their drinks and watching rugby. We weren't sure what the protocol was, so we just waited by the door. I thought it'd be like in a movie where everybody suddenly stops talking and turns to stare at you in a disregarding way. Fortunately that didn't happen. The bartender/owner was friendly and seated us at a small table underneath the bigscreen TV. He didn't bat an eye when we ordered only hot water to drink (though he was probably thinking "are these people for real?"). We enjoyed watching the game and listening to the locals watching the game while we ate. The wife and I ordered: * Soup of the Day (€4.50): Chicken and veggie soup served with brown bread. This was a flavorful, hearty soup, but a little on the salty side. * Shepherd's Pie (€10.95): This was enjoyable. Flaky crust and meat and veggies cooked just right. Served with potato wedges and a side salad. * Fish & Chips (€9.95): This was just ok. The fish was lacking in the rich flavor characteristic of a good deep fried fish. We didn't finish all the chips, so we asked for a to-go box. I guess restaurants here aren't accustomed to that, since the owner had to fetch us a takeout container from another restaurant for our leftovers. It's a classic small pub just North of the river and next to the tracks. Food was average (Irish breakfast and vegetarian egg bake). Only one staff with 15-20 patrons during lunch so was a struggle for her. Worth swinging in for a quick pint but many options just south of here. read more

On a whirlwind 2 week vacation to Ireland, the girlfriend & I tried to see & experience absolutely as much of this incredible land as we could. We did not accomplish every last activity we wished we could have on our rather ambitious itinerary. Nonetheless, we did discover a land of numerous stunning & magical wonders. We did see a land of unending natural beauty. We did learn of a land with a monumentally long history of trials, tragedies & triumphs. We did get to meet many kind, humorous, warm & generous people. Our vacation to Ireland was just 2 weeks, but that was time enough to know this is a land easy to love & a land to be sorely missed. Wandering the streets of Dublin our 1st night in Ireland, the girlfriend & I were looking for someplace casual to pop in for dinner & a few pints. Coming across the Boar's Head, it looked as though it would fit the bill & it certainly did. We grabbed a couple seats at the bar, ordered our long-awaited 1st pints of Guinness in Ireland & struck up a conversation with a couple of pleasant & very funny Dubliners. Also looking at menus, I ordered a 1/3 lb burger w/bacon & stuffing + potato wedges & the girlfriend ordered potato wedges with melted cheese & bacon. While enjoying lively conversation over pints of Guinness, we convened a short discussion amongst ourselves. The girlfriend & I agreed that the legend of Guinness is true. It really does seem to taste better in Ireland. Our food was presented shorlty after & hit the spot perfectly. I've had plenty of burgers with bacon back in the States, but this one was uniquely excellent. Served on a bap with rashers, this was something new for me & quite delicious. I had some of the girlfriend's potato wedges with melted cheese & bacon, too. It was the sort of cheesy, bacon-y, gooey goodness that was meant to downed with pints of Guinness. All of our food was superb pub grub. The Boar's Head is a great pub with a comfortable feel & solid pub grub. If & when we're ever back in Dublin, we'll definitely be by again for a few pints. read more

This is a very popular lunch spot and now I know why, the portions are huge for the money you give. I got a cheese burger with some fancy sweet pepper & onion relish. It came with wedges and salad, way too much for me, but it was great value for €7.95. It's a cosy little pub with a bigger upstairs. My lunch was made even more pleasant by the presences of a handsome man with a sexy Northern Irish accent... I really should have read the reviews more closely. I came in looking for a hearty delicious meal and was heartily disappointed. The food was all very bland and mostly over salted. I had the soup of the day (beef and veg) Which tasted like it was from a can. Then ordered their signature shepherd's Pie which comes with a side salad and fries or wedges. (The Irish really love their potatoes) The pie was clearly pre made and was served barely warm. Really nothing special. I expected more. Sadly the tastiest part of the meal were the potato wedges. There's so many pubs in Dublin, you shouldn't have to settle. read more

What a gem! Great ambiance. I sat downstairs by the window for a few pints and some whiskey which was recommended to me by the staff. Teelings whiskey was great and my tried my new favorite beer, 5 Lamps. Staff was very accommodating and attentive, prices fair, relaxed atmosphere. I'm American traveling through Europe during this whole Covid experiment. The pub was very welcoming while following the new safety guidlines. Good job guys! I came into this restaurant with 5 of my friends and we were seated right away in the upstairs section of the restaurant. I ordered the stead sandwich with chips, but my friends ordered the shepherd's pie, Irish stew, and other meals. My meal was tasty and big for about 10 euro. Our waitress was wonderful and made it easy to split the check amongst us. I would highly recommend going here for lunch or dinner in Dublin. read more

I heard great things about the shepherd's pie here so thought I would take my wife and 4 year old son here to try it out. I walked in and this old grumpy man walks up to me and immediately says "we're full" and pointed at the door several times even though there were tables open in the restaurant. I've never felt so unwelcome in my life and hated having to explain to my 4 year old that the old grumpy man kicked us out. I paid a lot of money to come vacation here and we are great tippers. This is a great little pub on a side street in one of the main shopping areas in Dublin. We popped in for a quick pint and. sandwich and both were fantastic. This pub gets the honor of being the spot of my first pint of Guinness in Ireland and therefore will always hold a special spot in my memories. I ordered a club sandwich and was amazed at how great it was. The bacon, the chips, the bread were all fantastic! How do they make the bacon taste so nice here??? The landlord was incredibly friendly and nice and gets bonus points for not smacking the American tourists who said to him that Dublin was a bit boring and that three days was too long to spend here as there is nothing to do. The look on his face was priceless though. It looked like he just stepped in some fresh dog poo! Free wifi too if you ask for the password but its pretty easy to crack the password yourself if you wanna give it a try. Horse racing on the tv and locals in the corners means that this is not by any means a touristy pub. Just great. read more

Old school to the hilt, The Boar's Head is one place I've never ticked off my list til yesterday. There were five of us standing around, wondering where to go, what to eat, we looked 4 metres to our left, and there ye go, in we went. A swift pint and a nice hot meal was the order of the day, and that's what we got. The menu is standard pub grub - shepherd's pie, baked potato, burgers etc, all with a variety of carbs on top like potato wedges, chips, some nice slaw-y slaw, etc. It came out quickly and was piping hot. Pretty standard Irish pub fare - nothing too complicated or crazy but it was tasty and comforting - grand! The bar woman was maybe a little.. disinterested.. or maybe was just done with work that day. No biggie, just not massively into welcoming or serving food...;-) read more

The Boar's Head is something of an institution in Dublin. It ranks amongst the dozen or so early houses around the place that supposedly cater to those who work all night but still deserve a tipple after their shift. I imagine the new licensing laws have put a stop to this essentially harmless and noble tradition but I don't know. As a digression, it's only a matter of time before that bloody EU, in conjunction with our weak chinned government, and their bizarre rules manage to iron all the idiosyncrasies out of the whole continent. Baguettes? Too pointy - potentially offensive shape . Pretzels? Too twisty - potential for children to get tangled up in them. Siestas? Too lazy - must return to factory on account of global economic melt-down. The list goes on and we must stop them before we all end up living and working, alone, in prefabricated plastic cubes under dim but efficient light, taking an exactly fifteen minute break to socialise (by not smoking cigarettes) under constant police surveillance. But I digress, it's small inside, and resolutely traditional, with murals of Celtic fables and tales adorning the walls where GAA memorabilia isn't. The staff are as friendly as it gets, the regulars are devout and the food ain't half bad. Four stars. read more

Popped into the Boars Head on Dec 22nd as our son badly needed to use the toilet only to be refused because we weren't customers, when my husband asked again to use the toilets explaining that our 8 Yr old son had special needs he was told again that they were for customers only and that the Jervis center was the nearest toilets. Absolutely disgraceful, the Boars Head don't deserve a rating!!! read more

The Boars Head is a traditional, old style Dublin pub with a Celtic feel to it, i think the atmosphere is relaxed and conversational with music playing in the background. There are two bar areas, the main bar as you enter and a lounge upstairs. Amazing place. As an American, this was by far my favorite bar in all of Dublin. Hospitality from Mike and Hugh was amazing and made me feel very comfortable. I can see why there are so many regulars, as I became one the 3 nights I was there. Oh and the lasagna is unbelievable good! A must-have!!!!
