Irish pubs are truly the living rooms of Dubliners -- warm, cozy, filled with stories and friends of all ages meeting to chat. The Duke was a beautiful old space, filled to bursting with happy groups of people, their conversations echoing off the well-polished Victorian woodwork. Dave at the upstairs bar served us our pints and tasty bowls of Irish stew with a side of brilliant humor. (Thanks, Dave!) We met here for the Literary Pub Crawl (my favorite experience in Dublin)... worth coming back for a pint and supper (but arrive early, as the place fills up fast). read more

Another great old-world pub in Dublin. I love the woodwork here and the overall look of the place it has a classic, cozy atmosphere. The staff were friendly with fast service. The food is solid pub fare done right. I had the Guinness pie, which was very tasty, hearty, and filling. Honestly, it was the perfect meal for a cold, wet evening. read more

The bartenders hate Americans. Never got to express personal opinions. Asked for toilet and then he kicked all Americans before he knew anything. He claimed too drunk but kicked before he talked to us. Then when questioned he said he hates Americans. And never welcome The Duke after I said we don't need drinks just food. read more

We participated in a literary pub crawl that kicked off at this pub. Before the crawl started we had dinner at the pub and it was delicious. I had the Irish stew which tasted homemade and warmed the belly. The brown bread that it is served with was a especially good. Menu prices are some of the most reasonable that I have found in the city. Atmosphere was relaxed, yet lively. I would wholeheartedly recommend The Duke! read more

No parking-downtown. Easy to get to. By everything. Service was very quick and efficient. Menu is somewhat small, burgers, Irish stew fish and chips as mains. I had the the stew, my friends had the hamburger and the salmon sandwich. We also ate the bread pudding as desert. The stew was good-but not quite as flavorful as say Guinness stew was. This was a great stop. I had the Traditional Irish Stew--very good. It was a bit quiet early in the day, which made it a perfect stop for lunch. During a recent trip to Ireland, we were searching for the perfect Dublin pub and found it at The Duke!! We had a large group of about 20. The staff members were incredibly nice and made us feel as if we were family. The food was very good and was delivered quickly inspite of the size of our group. The service was excellent, and we never had empty glasses on our table. The pub owner, Thomas, visited with us several times during the night and we really appreciated his kind demeanor and humor. Just a simple and traditional Irish Pub. I came here on an early afternoon; there weren't many patrons at the beginning. However, as the day progressed it became more and more crowded. Service is outstanding. But Irish people in general are incredibly friendly. I ordered a traditional Irish stew. I've never had lamb before my life and I was pleasantly surprise. I thought it was a good warm hearty dish. It was perfect for the weather because it was snowing that day. I ordered a few pints of different Irish beers. I really can't remember any of the names. But there's no such thing as a bad beer in Ireland. 5 stars. It's a genuine Irish Pub experience with your traditional Irish dishes and classic irish beers. All right stop everything you're doing if you're visiting Dublin you need to go visit Dukes. And now they're not paying me for this review LOL. If you're looking for that true Irish Pub experience along with a delightfully tasty Irish dining experience this is the place to be. The servers are very attentive and friendly and will answer all your questions. The drinks keep coming, the food is served piping hot, and is absolutely tasty, and satisfying. Our visit to The Duke was another outstanding meal we had in Dublin.We only opted to have desserts and drinks here. It was rather busy around 8:30 PM. We were able to sit outside. We showed our vaccination card at the door as well. During our visit we opted to have an Irish coffee and a Jameson on the rocks. We also came for the banoffee pie which was delicious. The Duke is a traditional Irish pub and I was looking for a traditional Irish pub. I didn't travel 7500 km to eat at McDonald's or have Italian food, though both were options. I wanted to see if the Irish pubs back home were good representations or pathetic carbon copies. I can say in many ways they are good representations except for a few differences. 1. The service was great. My friend and I sat at the bar and at first the bartenders were a tad standoffish but it melted quickly away replaced with laughs and smiles. 2. The food was great! While the bangers and mash were similar to stateside and the fish and chips were also similar the portions were larger. One thing I quickly found was that they use full fish fillets. There's no puny little wisps of fish here! I don't quite understand, nor can appreciate, peas being served with fish and chips. 3. This is one area where Irish pubs in Ireland and the US differ - the drinks. Sure, you'll find beer but The Duke offered a variety of creative and super delicious whiskey cocktails. I'll be honest - before Ireland all I had was lousy whiskey cocktails. I'm not an Old Fashion or Manhattan kinda drinker. I don't want a bitter drink. The Duke had fantastic cocktails. I was very happy with my pub experience. I was extremely happy with The Duke. read more

Cute pub a bit off the main drag in Dublin. Shepherds pie was super delicious and the fish and chips were quite good.

Hush up, yelp-ies. This place needs to remain our secret. Do you honestly want the unwashed masses to over-run the gem that is The Duke? No, of course not. Let them harass the staff at Porterhouse, Sinnott's, and then get totally trashed at Doyle's. :P But please don't tell them about the Duke. Those heathens might scare off the regulars, and people just finishing the Literary Dublin tour, which begins and ends right here. The Duke is totally chill and cool. It's a cosy place, which is a feat in itself. Because the pub is kind of big. It has an upstairs as well a vast downstairs area. There are endless nooks and crannies with seating. I adore the well worn furniture, the low lighting, the pictures and memorabilia on the paneled walls, the knowledgeable bartenders-- everything about this pub feels so authentic and classic. Probably because it is. The Duke even offers a nice carvery lunch during the week. I'm not saying it's gourmet, but it's satisfying and a good value. This place is brilliant at pouring an excellent Guinness too-- sometimes even better than you'd get at the bar at top of Guinness's Storehouse. :o (Uh-oh, did I just start a war?) The Duke, on funnily enough Duke street, is a very interesting, laid back pub. Unlike the rest of the pubs in the city centre its not flashy and doesn't charge the earth to get in or for overly elaborate cocktails. I'm a big fan of this place, it has a nice laid back atmosphere. While not as cool as (poser central) the Bailey or as historic and pokey as Davy Byrnes but feels like a genuine comfortable local pub in the city centre. Split over two floors with a big bar upstairs as well. Its kinda rambeling but in a nice way, gets busy on Fri after work as people spill out onto the street. What i'd call a Sunday night pub, laid back and no one trying at all to be remotely trendy. If your sick of Dawson street and its excessive prices head to the Duke. read more

My husband and I dropped into The Duke on Saturday evening to meet with my brother. Sadly he could not make it but we had a lovely evening anyway. From the moment we arrived at the door to the time we left. We were seated at a table by the door, we had drinks and food. We had ham and cheese sandwich and chips. It was delicious. Great pub, a little deceiving from the outside however this is quite spacious inside and has a little outdoor seating area if the weather permits/takes your fancy. Fellow Yelper John is spot-on when he says that the Duke is not pretentious. The kind of people that go here just want to have a drink and a conversation. They don't care about the "vibe" and are not interested in being seen at the latest trendy pub unlike so many other people who drink of Dawson Street. This pub is also massive so there are many different places to enjoy your pint and carvery meal. I go here for these reasons and I like to believe that the famous Irish writers who frequented the Duke experienced something similar. The likes of Joyce and Kavanagh are said to have been regulars at this pub or at least that's what the Dublin Literary Pub Crawl proclaims. Any place fit for Joyce is fit for me. read more

Ah sure tis a grand pub really. this is a total after work place as far as i can see, or maybe its cause im us always in here after work, never any other time, like, i wouldnt decide on saturday night that the duke is the destination of choice, maybe it could be for a pub crawl but after that, i have never decided to spend a hole night there just cause. Its a great pub though, two floors, the top one hosts the start of the literary pub crawl, jus FYI! dowstairs is where you will usually find me, in one of the many little nooks that all the walls and pillars form. as everyone else has said he fire is a big plus when it is winter time! when there is some rugby on or something its also a good place to go ,they pull down a big screen (which is right in one of the walkways, i always thought that was a bit odd!) and everyone can see and cheer on their team! read more

Its my favourite pub in Dublin. And its perfect at any time of the day... that's why I love it... alcoholic tendencies not withstanding. It's like an old man pub just placed where a trendy pub should be. It's not remotely stuffy like the Bailey or souless like Davy Byrnes (it's nearest rivals)... it's just a pub. They even have a fire in winter. A fire, I tell you! It's big enough but it's all divided by little pillars and corners so it's perfect for a chat. Downstairs there are two snugs which you must race to the pub to get. Upstairs is more open but with a function area that is used for the literary pub crawl but can be hired for a very reasonable price thereafter. To me the Duke feels as comfortable as my house. It's good for a carvery lunch, an afternoon pint with a book, a coffee meeting with friends (and then you think 'ah sure I'm in a pub I might as well have a drink!'), a quiet few to catch up with a bunch of mates mid-week, a post-work drink (for a long time this was my work local), or a lively friday or saturday night before clubbing. Part of me wants to say 'this is a great pub, but stay away because its mine!', but really the Duke is already very popular, as you can see from how jammed it is on a Friday night. Tourists wander in almost by accident from time to time. There's nothing here to cater specifically for tourists the way a lot of the pubs in Templebar do, except this is an actual pub that locals frequent and so far more indicative of irish-pubness than something like the Auld Dubliner or the Bailey (yep I've got a beef with the Bailey!!) What else can I say? Scene of a lot of silly drunkeness and certainly many of my birthdays... and so familiar to the gang of people I used to work with that we refer to it as 'Dukie wookie' on a regular basis! read more

Been coming here a bit more than usual as of late; working life demanding liquid persuasion to continue returning to the salt mine. The prices do not arbitrarily change as the night progresses, or I haven't noticed it to do so, in that you aren't ordering a Jameson and being charged 4.50 one moment and then 4.75 the next, depending on the whim of the barman. It's a great place to meet people and start off the night with a pre-dinner drink. It's quite large and the upstairs is spacious with a bar of its own. Additionally, if you're a bit peckish, but do not want a full-on meal, they do these nice platters for 4, which is of good value. If there's just two of you, they'll halve it and only charge you half the price. read more
