Was there 11/10 a Friday. Was fairly busy. Close to 10 minutes to be greeted after being seated. Forgot our appetizer. Drinks were delayed (server apologized, bar is busy) Pizza was quite good. Burger was average, fries were good. Menu on website didn't match what we were given at restaurant. Asked for ketchup and a water - didn't come. We were visiting Appleton on a Saturday and found this wonderful brewery for lunch. The building has great history. We sat outside on the patio. The service prompt and professional. The server, a young man, was knowledgeable on the large beer selection. I had the Elk burger with fries. It was cooked just as I had ordered. Our other sandwich was the roast beef with beer cheese . Stopped in here for lunch. Charming brewpub in the basement with brewery above. Tried the small beer flight: all were fresh and good, of course some more to my taste than others. My son had the steak sandwich without the toppings, served on a toasted hoagie roll with super crispy, fresh fries. I had the pretzel with beer cheese and mustard and the cheese curds (when in Rome) that came with ranch and salsa. Pretzel was really good and my son stole half of it. Historic old building. Loved the bar downstairs! Great service and small talk from the bartender, including building history and stories about the building being haunted. Enjoyed the Sessions Pale Ale which paired great with the Elk Burger. We also tried the Duck Wontons which we'd highly recommend, especially with the sweet Thai chili sauce. Tried the fried cheese curds. Huge square cubes of cheese rather than small naturally shaped curds, so the cheese-to-batter ratio didn't suit my palate. We will definitely be coming back! read more

This is a very cool restaurant with great food. I went with a group of my co-workers so I was able to try the pretzels, scotch eggs, cheese curds, mac and cheese as well as the shepherd's pie. Everything was delicious but my favorite was the shepherd's pie. They also make their own root beer which was perfect, not too sweet or syrupy. We did eat in a bar area rather than the restaurant so we had to order at the bar and it was a little loud to me but it was still pretty cool. Came here for a birthday - we asked what the birthday specials were. The bartender told us drinks were free on your birthday. We order a drink, gives them to us and takes our cash. Then comes back to say "oh sorry, guess the rules changed, no more free drinks just free beer. I can't break the rules, you need to pay for that now". Okay? We didn't walk in here asking for a free drink - the bartender told us it was free that's why we ordered it, they then turned around and made us pay! Food was good, about average. The price compared to the amount of food was on the higher end. The cheese curds were $10 and we got 7 curds. The service was mediocre. Wasn't very attentive but we eventually got what we needed. We did sit outside so not sure if that was the problem. We were in middle of 3 tables both ends had errors in their meals. Ours were correct and tasted as anticipated but the service was pokey. The restaurant is located on the lower level of an old stone building so it's like going to a secret dark place. The beer and sodas are made in house - can't get more local. Popped in for a business lunch, would have loved to have tried the beer but it wasn't meant to be. Plenty of vegan and veg options. I went with the black bean burger (healthy) and kettle chips (not healthy). The burger was homemade, not the cruddy Morningstar stuff. Came with avocado, lettuce and tomato. The building is cool but needs some serious updating. The service was good as our waitress was very attentive. My cheese curds were mush in the center and were not breaded. They were all the exact size and shape so not a true cheese curd. The schnitzel was awful and the breaded cauliflower was gritty. The cauliflower had good flavor except for the pieces that were gritty. My daughter ordered the Mac n cheese and it was very good and the chicken tenders were also good. Stopped in while in town for the weekend for a Green Bay home game based on yelp reviews. We had a brief wait on a Saturday night so we headed to the bar where we had quick and attentive service despite a full house for a Badgers game. The great service continued after being seated at our table. As a party of four we order an assortment of entrees and shared a pub basket and man am I so glad we did - the cheese curds were bomb! We had a bit of a snag with one of the dishes but they quickly corrected it and the manager was awesome about it. Hubby and I tried the sirloin cooked to order and the mac 'n' beer cheese which was a bit on the soupy side but still very good. A must stop if you're staying in Appleton. read more

I'm in town on business and was looking for dinner options when I came across this place. After reading several good Yelp reviews I decided to give it a try. I was a little hesitant at first walking in the building, unsure where to go. But I followed the signs that lead me downstairs to a really cool bar area. I sat at the bar and ordered the BBQ Pulled Pork and Pear Cider. The sandwich was messy, knife and fork style, but it was so good! And the cider was much better than I expected. The look and feel of this place is very cool. If your in the area and looking for something different, I highly recommend the Stone Arch. My only complaint would be that service wasn't great when I first got here, but it got much better as the night went on. There is only one bar tender and he is quite busy so I understand that. The staff wear masks and they do temp checks before they will seat you. They are also diligent about sanitizing between customers. They are strict on being in your seat with a drink in your hand which I appreciate. This place is taking COVID seriously. Thanks for a good dinner. I will be back next time I am in town. read more

Traveling alone for work often sucks. Especially when you are eating alone. You feel like you have a giant LOSER hat on and its embarrassing, especially when the bar is full and you end up having to eat, alone, in a booth. So, this was my dining situation. I had read good things about the beers here on RateBeer, so I made the trek across the bridge from my hotel, and i am glad I did. The location - interesting, obviously historical, area. It was dark, and cold, and I walked. Under better conditions I would have checked out the area a bit more as it looked interesting. The building the place is in certainly is interesting, and the basement location is a neat space. The service - really good. The waitress did not make me feel like a dork loser, and even though she knew my tab was going to be small, I got as much attention as anyone else. She was fast, friendly, and made me feel welcome. The beer - I sampled a few, and drank two. I took a risk on the first one in the vein of trying new things, and that was a mistake. It did not suck, but I didn't like it (I won't say what it was because it is a preference thing that I did not like it, not any fault of the beer). Beer #2 was delicious (a wet hop). The food - I had a bison burger with bison bacon, and let me tell you, it was fantastic. I had desert too, and it was yummy as well. The food was outstanding. Overall, this was a dining experience I where I was expecting to get in and out as quickly as possible due to feeling awkward, and instead felt welcome and as a result had a nice dinner at a reasonable pace, and if I am ever back here I will most definitely return. We stopped here prior to seeing a show at the Skyline Comedy Club upstairs. We shared a Scotch Egg, our first, which was very good. I tried their Whiskey Old Fashioned and a Moscow Mule. Also good. Service was excellent. 70's rock was playing, which I found to be an odd but not completely unpleasant choice. Maybe it was being played ironically. I don't know. Hipsters are crazy like that. We returned to the bar after the show to have another cocktail. One note: We asked the bartender when he thought we should go upstairs to the Skyline for the 8pm show. He said 7:20/7:30ish. While visiting in Wisconsin, I was taken to this restaurant in the evening. It's specializes in beers as it is a brewery. No I do not drink beer, I am told that the beer there is very good. The menu selections match what beers would be best with each item. I thought it funny, almost a parody of wine. But this is serious food. Schnitzel and pizza and sandwiches and burgers and fish and a full variety for any taste was available. I had to special for the day - pheasant tacos, even with cactus. They were fresh from Janesville, Wisconsin. They were surprisingly good. They also make their own soda pop and root beer. Any beer drinker, or not, would be satisfied eating here. We have been to the Stone Cellar a few times and we have always had a good meal and good service today was the exception! Today was STELLAR!! Perfect food and perfect service! There was a 25 min wait but we seated ourselves outside on the nice patio. We were greeted almost immediately by a wonderful server, Bobby. He had a great personality and had good recommendations. I had the vanilla stout and then I tried the cherry stout. Both were very good. My friend had the house riesling, which she loved. It was busy but all the servers were very attentive and service was fast. We started with the cheese curds. They were AMAZING! The come with ranch and marinara sauce. The marinara sauce was soooo good, surprisingly good with the curds! I had the Brewers Schnitzel. It was very good. It is a Niman Ranch pork topped with beer cheese sauce and bacon, finished with mozzarella over spaetzel. My friend had the Cajun Chicken wrap Blackened chicken, bacon, smoked bleu cheese, lettuce and tomato with Chipotle ranch. She said it was perfect! I tried it. It was very good! We normally would have purchased dessert but we were running a little behind to go to the comedy club but I am sure it would have been good! Stone Cellar has the potential to be everything great in its area. It failed a little bit with me, but that's simply because I didn't really enjoy my burger. Here's the deal: The ambiance of this place is amazing. The atmosphere is so perfect for a great night out (and I imagine during the winter, this place is even busier). We visited as a party of eight, and ended up finding a table in the bar that we could eat without waiting for a table. I did notice that the wait seemed to be VERY long, so take note of that on weekends. Also, we called a few hours earlier to check on reservations. We were told we could call 45-30 minutes before we came, and they'd put our name in. When we did finally call, we were told that they don't take names over the phone (after a bit of confusing arguing, they finally let us). I would just suggest that anyone answering the phone is a little more trained for guidelines. We ordered a few appetizers that were really good: my cheese curds were amazing. They're squares, which is really odd, but weirdly fabulous. I loved them. We also ordered spinach and artichoke dip, which was great as well. Only down side: I feel like we only got about ten chips for the dip. We did ask for more chips, and they were delivered shortly thereafter. My burger wasn't very good at all. It's served dry, which is kind of a disappointment to burger fanatics. I also ordered it medium, after asking our server specifically if I should get medium or medium rare. I explained that I do like it to be very pink, just not dripping blood. She said I should go with medium, that it would be good. Turns out my burger was almost well done. Eh...fail. The service was great, she was clearly busy but she did not lack in any way whatsoever. We were all very happy with the service. read more

Traveling for business, and was relying on Yelp for great food and beers - definitely so happy we tried it out! Great variety of delicious beers brewed on-location - and the Schnitzel was amazing, and much bigger than my hand! Try the Fried Cheese Curds and Vanilla Stout! Shout out to our waiter, Coty, who was knowledgeable, had great recommendations, and was just friendly and upbeat - definitely made the experience even nicer. Stone Arch which is likely the top rated and most popular venue in Appleton, was packed on Saturday night and showed why it's the best choice in town. Given the crowd, thankfully we got a nice round table for our party of 6. Overall, everything from the ambiance to the waitor service, and the food/brew were all stellar. When in Wisconsin, you need to get cheese curds. Did I say cheese? We also ordered pizza (3-meat), and beer Mac & cheese. Lots of cheesy goodness and heart burn the following day. The Mac & cheese was almost overlooked but we were reminded that it's been featured on multiple food shows so I had to say yes. It was filled with sausage and bacon and was a unique and tasty take on Mac attack. I thought the thin crispy pizza was real good and possibly the best dish of the night. We also ordered the housemade kettle chips which were spot on. For entrees, my cousin & I split another Wisconsin speciality in Elk. I got da pastrami wrap and he ordered the burger. No we're good with the burger being the winning dish- I was impressed. My Dads salmon was also cooked to perfection. We stopped in after a walking tour around town. We wanted to check out this historic place and drink some great beer. They were having a brat fry outside on the patio (June 2019), so we decided to get the daily special. There was a long line for brats, so we figured they must be good. They paired the brats with some homemade chips that were really good. The brat was grilled to perfection and the bun was soft and tasty. They have some awesome mustard to try. It took my brat to the next level, for sure. The place has a lot of historic charm and is pretty large once you start exploring. Some areas are a little darker than others, due to lighting and the age of the place. We stopped downstairs at the bar and the bartender was very nice and let us try a couple of their beers on tap. This is a nice touch for someone that is new to the area and restaurant. All in all, they have really good beer and the brats were delicious. read more

My last review of this place was... unfavorable, to put it lightly. In general, Stone Arch had come off to me as an expensive and overrated establishment that talked a big game but couldn't quite match their cost with quality. It turns out that I had visited the establishment in the midst of renovations in early October. These unusual circumstances resulted in some awkward staffing issues that affected our service that day. Somehow, for the most part, things went very wrong that day. Our server was overworked and struggling to give us the attention he knew we deserved as customers. His apologies were simply not enough to convince us this place deserved another chance. After my previous review I was reached out to by management who wanted to use my feedback to improve their service. A few weeks of awkwardness in communications unfolded over Yelp and eventually e-mail. It wasn't until nearly a month later that I had a chance to talk in detail about my experience with management. I could have done more perhaps to make my voice heard about my experience, but I felt my review was sufficient and that if they truly wanted to make good on improving their service, they would show some initiative and reach out to me. In time, they did. I had the privilege of speaking directly to the establishment's general manager, and he assured me that on our next visit he would do everything he could to prove that his business could do better. I'd be lying if I said a part of me wasn't still skeptical. After all, I had waited a long time to hear back from anyone. Today, however, I'm pleased to say that I left this place feeling stunned and satisfied with our service and our food alike. And very full! I'm extremely glad that we decided to give this place a second try, and despite the cost of eating here we are already looking forward to when we'll have a chance to dine here again. As you can see by the date of my review, we came the evening of Halloween. Employees were dressed in various costumes and it was clear that they took pride in where they worked. It all looked very fun. I had only seen the tap room prior to this visit due to the renovations that had been ongoing at the time and said tap room paled in comparison to the presentation of the restaurant proper. It felt very upscale, but in a relaxed and pleasant way rather than an overly stiff way. The place was well lit, very clean, and the other guests that visited along the way all seemed equally as comfortable as we were. I was met personally by the general manager which was an all around pleasant experience. The server we had was great; I go through a lot of water, so I must have had like... five glasses. I didn't wait longer than maybe two minutes tops for a single refill, with most of them done proactively as my drink was getting low rather than when I was completely out. Our server was patient, eager to answer our questions, and generally very attentive and friendly. He earned his tip. We tried the Pub Basket again, hoping that maybe our previous visit had been some sort of fluke - maybe some of our food had been overcooked or underprepared last time. The fries and the chicken tenders were great last time, and they were great again. The kettle chips were better all around - last time there had been something strange about the taste that I couldn't quite place, but this time they were good! The onion rings were absolutely addicting and the cheese curds actually managed to live up to the hype. I was honestly sort of in disbelief that this was the same item we'd ordered last time. My girlfriend and I have a tendency to splurge sometimes on appetizers, so this time we opted for something cheaper than two separate entrees. At the recommendation of the general manager we tried their thin-crust pizza, which looked amazing in pictures. When the pizza was brought out it was picturesque! The sauce was divine, and the toppings were great... this, by the way, is coming from a guy that's not normally a big thin-crust pizza person... Stone Arch made me a believer this time around. After pigging out until I could eat no more we received boxes. Our server suggested a few desert options, and my girlfriend couldn't resist the chance to get some cheesecake. I had a few bites and it was great, but after finishing it she swore it was some of the best cheesecake she'd ever had. I'm never a big fan of leaving negative reviews, but it's clear to me now that sometimes doing so can actually be very beneficial to the restaurant. There are establishments out there like Stone Arch that truly care about their service and want to address concerns. The management at this establishment convinced me through actions that they genuinely value feedback they receive, as evidenced by their willingness to make sure our second visit went swimmingly. Somehow, against the odds, they won my girlfriend and I back as customers, and we WILL be back! read more
