We met relatives visiting from out of town for a quick lunch at Chalice. Originally we were reserved for 1pm (table of 4) and they totally accommodated us when we showed up at 12:15. The beautiful bar area was filled and they had reserved a table for us near the fireplace. Allie was our server and we will be back just to visit with her! She was super friendly, efficient, and kept checking back with us to replenish drinks and food as needed. The seafood bisque soup was piping hot and so flavorful. Two of us had the Black Forest sandwich which were overflowing with meat (ended up taking half home for later!) The Deluxe burger was juicy with mushrooms and onions, cooked to perfection, and the Chalice sauce was delicious. I should have taken photos of the food but to be honest we inhaled everything while we kept talking. Again Allie was a consummate professional--she made sure we never had to ask for a refill -- she was just there when we needed her. We will be back again! read more

Quaint and cozy little space with a fireplace perfect in the winter! There is a bar area and a small dining area so expect it to be crowded. We wound up at the bar to eat. I'm not sure if they take reservations but if you really want a table check in advance. The drink selection is great. The food menu is heavily geared towards sandwiches and burgers. Given the vibe, I'd love to see a bit more main course menu items. That said, the appetizer we got was a potato thing (starts with a W) and it was phenomenal. Lots of seasoning with onions, and a huge quantity. A few could easily share and careful you might get full. Also great as a family style side for the table. read more

I think I came here 20 years ago, with a friend. Stopped in today, because it got good reviews and because it wasn't super busy on a very busy Saturday airshow night. Far enough off the beaten path. Service was good. Very friendly, made good suggestions, stayed right on top of drink refills. I was super thirsty so they had to fill it a lot. They have a special summer menu and I almost ordered something off there, but something on the main menu look good. Lots of burgers and steaks and things, but I wanted something a little lighter, so I went with the shrimp salad. Sautéed shrimp and mushrooms, plus cheese, over lettuce and tomatoes. So, not much lighter, but a little bit. And it came with garlic bread and a peppercorn dipping sauce. Everything was very good. The shrimp were big and tender and flavorful, the tomatoes were marinated and tasty, the mushrooms were good- and I am picky about them- and everything went together, well. Price was reasonable for the quantity and quality. The place isn't super big, but there's a decent dining area, plus a bar where you can also eat, and some outdoor dining. It was nice, I remember it being nice before, and maybe my friend's favorite restaurant, and I can see why. read more

We walked into a packed bar but we were seated in short order. I ordered a tenderloin sandwich which was cooked to perfection. My wife ordered a Philly sandwich and she loved hers. The waitress took care of us and really did a super job. Overall an excellent experience! read more

First of all they are basically a luncheonette with only sandwiches, paper thin American fried potatoes or french fries, and salads. Second of all, I did not find the service to be all that great. I had to get up and ask for my condiments and waited while all the waitresses busied themselves talking while my waitress was figuring out tip amounts. I had to pay $6.50 tip automatically added (this isn't appropriate for this "diner") onto a $17.00 tenderloin open face "sandwich", which meant I got a couple chunks of french garlic bread. The Waldorf side salad was apples & dressing w/ tiny amt of celery. No cabbage or walnuts! Onions overtook the meal. Greasy! My bill was about $38.00 with tax & tip. I was sick leaving the place. A great little place. We got here early so we picked a seat. By the time we left they were packed though. The sandwich was very good. Everything was very good (except the Apple salad but that's my taste). The salads are generous. If you're a salad person you should get one here. The strawberry short cake is delicious and large... share that one. The Apple salad is apples with Mayo, I just wouldn't get that again but apparently it's a traditional dish. All in all a great restaurant to check out in Oshkosh and a short drive from the campus. read more

Ambiance very nice, food I don't know as we walked out because my sister and I were rudely treated by a tall blonde bartender. We waited to seated and blonde bartender directed us to the high tables and stools. I explained I can't sit on them as they are to high for me as I am handicapped n walk with a cane. Mind you no one was waiting to be seated, and I saw four regular open tables in the dining room. She said well can't help you then. I was so mad because my sister was just told she has cancer and told her we would go to the Chalice lunch and have a nice quiet chat on what our next steps would be. Never again!!! read more

Stoped in to Chalice for the first time and was underwhelmed by the food. I ordered a Chicken Philly and though the bun was huge and filled with lots of grilled peppers, mushrooms and onions, the "Philly " was 3 chicken tenders. I also ordered fries and though they said they only had "American fries" I was again underwhelmed. The portion was about 1/3 of a small potato sliced thin and pan fried. They were not exactly worth the $4.50. Outside of the food the atmosphere was nice and though the bar tender was overworked she was pleasant. Finally, as I was ready to leave, I learned that there was a dinner special for the night. read more

Came up here because a friend was staying in the area and someone recommended it and said they had good sandwiches. Holy freaking crap! This place is hands down one of the best places I have eaten in Wisconsin. Food- I got the pastrami sandwich. Best pastrami sandwich I have ever had! The flavor of the pastrami was absolutely perfect. The toasted French bread is really what makes this sandwich fantastic. It was crispy on the outside and soft and warm on the inside. Damn near perfect. The bread and pastrami combined with the provolone cheese and Chalice sauce makes for an out of this world experience. The sandwich also came with a choice of salad. I chose the pasta salad with tomatoes added and topped with ranch dressing on recommendation of the server. It also was delicious. Drinks- Didnt try any drinks but they have a full bar. Service- Service here was also incredible. We were sat quickly. The server was very attentive and answered any questions we had. Made sure to check on us regularly and kept our drinks filled. If you want a great place to take a date, make it Chalice. Its absolutely perfect. It is even worth the drive from the Fox Cities. This will become a regular place for me to go. Came here during a horse show. We had eaten here a year ago and it was good. This time it was awful. Their sides are just stuff swarming in mayo. We tried the nachos. They were ok. I had the burger it was awful. Completely overcooked. My husband got the Reuben. It was made with some processed stuff that they fried. It was definitely not a Reuben. My friend ordered what they told her was a Patty Melt. It was awful as well. Will not return here. read more

Great place for lunch in Oshkosh. The fish fry is awesome. The soup is great. I usually sit at the bar, because table seating is limited. The parking is also limited. The choice of sides is nice. Each of the salads is great and you can something to match your mood. Certainly much better than being offered fries like so many other places. The food is excellent here! I wish I knew what was in the Chalice sauce so I could make it at home. It has a great local bar feel. The tables are a little close together but the wait staff maneuver through the space expertly. The wait staff are attentive and friendly. I come here every time I come up to Wisconsin to visit my family. I highly recommend this place for lunch or dinner. Trust me, you will be taking leftovers home! read more

A lovely place with great atmosphere, I ordered the half pound hamburger. I thought surely I could dispatch it quickly but it was a lot bigger than it looked in the picture. The meat was cooked medium to perfection the bacon was very crispy with a lovely flavor lettuce and tomato and of course my favorite straight mayo in quantity. I went to Chalice for the first time last week and what a wonderful experience I had. The place is as cozy and welcoming as could be. There are not 1 but 2 fireplaces. The bar is super inviting and the dining room is surrounded by windows. My coworker and I were seated by the window at a table for 2 which had ample space. I usually don't like tables made for 2 because there's never enough room. This table was perfect. I ordered the Portobello Sandwich and it was out of this world. It was a very big portion and I can't believe I polished it off. It was that good. Our server was very attentive and kind. Overall, I give it a 10 out of 10. My compliments to the owner and the chef! Thank you to our server. We ate lunch at a decent distance near the bar area. Your server offered hot cider with cinnamon, and my side salad with a little ranch, and Waldorf salad. Our lunch was perfect. Mine grilled fish, and my friend said his burger was the best he had in 10 months. It was my treat, so we left some cash, and I doubled the tip on my card. The Chalice was rated "Best Vegetarian Restaurant in Winnebago County 2018". I would disagree. There are a few vegetarian options, however, not even half the menu. I would say it is one of the most romantic restaurants. Very warm & visually appealing. Impressive "warm" drink menu for the winter months. They are known for their great cocktails year round. It is primarily a soup & sandwich place(excellent), with a few larger plate options. Waitstaff exceptional. If you are Gluten Free, this is not the place for you. read more

Wow! I drive by this place every nearly every single day but I have never once stopped in. Big mistake on my part, as I could easily become a regular at this joint after my initial visit. I decided to stop in this evening with the GF and our dining experience was exceptional. The interior is very quaint and inviting, especially on a chilly Wisconsin evening, and both our hostess and server were cordial and pleasant. Our server, who could probably tell I had never been in before from the quizzical look on my face, gave us a full breakdown with superb accuracy. I am not normally a fan of "foo foo" martinis, but on the servers suggestion I tried out the mounds bar martini and it was fantastic. Just enough of the heavy stuff to know I am drinking a cocktail, but not so strong that I could use it to peel paint with either. Quite refreshing. I am a huge fan of mushrooms, and the portobello bites were heavenly. I have had stuffed mushrooms, and a million other variations as appetizers before and this was among the very best I have tried. I had the Haddock Au Gratin for an entree as it seemed like a fresh take on a familiar fish. I enjoyed every bite of it as well. It was topped with fresh broccoli, lots of provolone, and a side of garlic toast. Yum! I am not normally the type of person to give out 5 star reviews like candy, especially for places that I have only visited once since I feel that consistency is a critical variable that warrants 5 stars. However, in this instance I am willing to make an exception as I do not get "wowed" when out dining often, especially in Oshkosh. Fairly busy Saturday night, seating was pretty much immediate. Brat fest was going on so we got a Philly Brat, a Classic, and a steak. The steak was medium but dry. The classic brat was overcooked and served on a toasted Italian roll with no evidence of an onion ever having been near the plate. It was dryer than an oxen's fart. Service was slow enough that it was pointless to complain as everyone else had finished eating. This place can serve good food, but it has been too hit and miss to consider in the future given all the choices in the area. read more

I may make Oshkosh a travel destination now. No kidding. It started with a little sample plate of tomatoes, cukes, pasta and the sauce that is The Bomb. Chalice sauce. Mustard, wine and mayo never married so well. The seasoning in the tomatoes and cukes was so good they package and sell it. The portabella bites were divine with the Chalice Sauce. But the soups. Be still my heart. The tomato bisque--and I'm a snob here--was one of the best I've ever had. The mushroom soup was also excellent. Our group had the Reuben and the Pastrami Burger, which was delish per the report of my table mate. The Reuben was quite good but I like to have the generous serving of sauerkraut positioned between the slices of meat to prevent soggy bread. So that was the only thing I experienced that was less than stellar. And then don't get me started on the strawberry shortcake. Huge and just soooo good. They finished with the complimentary gooey peanut butter chocolate bites which required a stretcher so I could exit the restaurant. We were traveling and so glad we found this spot. Needed a late evening spot to grab dinner while on the road and saw the good reviews that Chalice had. Ordered a sweet Bourbon Old Fashined and their Chalice burger with bacon. Don't waste your time if you want a good dinner. The ambience is very nice, but the food just isn't up to par. Beware: they only have one side to chose from, no substitutes. Their side is called the "American fry", but it is far from an American fry. It is similar to a scalloped potato al gratin, minus the cheese sauce. Fair warning- don't order the garlic and butter haddock. It is a small piece of haddock that is buried in a pile of undercooked green peppers and mushrooms. It's seems like a fajita mix over the haddock. Why try to cover up the main part of the fish?? I won't be back. read more

The boyfriend and I had dinner here last night with another couple, and honestly, we should have just stayed home and cooked ourselves. I called earlier in the week to make a reservation (assuming that Chalice is pretty popular), but was told that while they do take reservations during the week, they do not on Fridays and Saturdays. Which kind of defeats the point of taking reservations, if you ask me, and should be clearer on their website. On arrival, the boyfriend and I went in what turned out to be the back door and came in around the bar. There's no host stand -- the people behind the bar seem to take care of that. Our request for a table for 4 (this was exactly 6pm on a Saturday) was met with an estimated 20-30 minute wait...but as soon as I asked if he needed a name, he then said that he did have a table and just needed to set it. Ok, then. Btw, this place is TINY. I estimate it can seat 30 people max in the dining room, plus the largish bar. Seated, we browsed the menu and placed drink orders. They have Spotted Cow, though I somehow expected it to be draft (it was bottled, but they brought a glass). The white sangria was decent. The waiter was friendly, came by at regular intervals, and kept my water topped off. However, everyone at the table agreed that the food was, not just bland, but boring. The boyfriend ordered the broccoli bites appetizer, which was steamed broccoli (to be fair, cooked through and piping hot), topped with mushrooms and onions, with a side of ranch and garlic bread. He also ordered the entree special, a steak cooked in French onion soup, and substituted the potato side for broccoli, resulting in an entree that was pretty much the same thing, only with steak added. A mention from the waiter about that would have been nice! I ordered the garlic and butter haddock, but I saw and tasted neither garlic nor butter on it, and in fact it arrived completely covered in a pile of onions, mushrooms, and peppers, kind of like fajita veggies. The entire thing was completely flavorless and boring -- I would have believed it was any kind of fish, and it was not remotely interesting or enjoyable to eat. The side of sliced potatoes had been pan fried, I think, and some were very overdone and crunchy (in a bad, chewy way), while others were totally underdone. Italian seasoning had been dumped across a portion of them, but it didn't add anything. My side of tomato salad consisted of sliced tomatoes again covered in Italian seasoning, but needed some oil or vinegar or something to liven it up (the boyfriend makes much better). The weird thing overall is that I can pretty much tell you their grocery list based on the things that were on practically every dish! Plus, their "Chalice sauces" or whatever mostly appeared to be mayo-based -- mayo and Dijon mustard, in the case of the person who ordered the turkey sandwich. Not that secret or amazing, guys. The menu itself seemed a little weird -- as someone else pointed out, melted cheese on all the salads, bleu cheese on a LOT of items, etc. Total for the table, including 2 drinks and 1 appetizer, was $78. However, we realized that the French onion soup that someone had ordered had never arrived. It didn't appear to be on the hand-written check, but it's pretty annoying when things get forgotten. I accepted an offer of a box (since I mostly ended up eating bread) and left it on the table on purpose, but the waiter ran after us with it. So, credit for that, but the meal overall was terrible. I had the chicken cordon blue sandwich. It was yummy. The side tomato salad was good but it tasted like the tomatoes were old. If it was fresh I bet it would have been delicious. Ordered carry out for 6. Did not receive one Waldorf salad that it came with. The Roast beef should have been "toasted French bread with a side of roast beef"! Three thin dry slices of roast beef on a very nice toasted piece of French bread. My first time eating food from Chalice. Not sure I will be back anytime soon. read more

The Chalice is my new favorite place to eat in Oshkosh! I had never been here before, despite having spent all of my teenage years living in Oshkosh, and I wish I had eaten here sooner! I went to lunch with a ladyfriend, and ordered a Black Forest--roast beef and turkey with mozzarella instead of Swiss, pasta salad, and iced tea. The sandwich was great, and came with Chalice sauce, which I could literally dip anything in, it's that good. The pasta salad was good, but a little dry, like it had been sitting around or didn't have enough dressing on it. The restaurant is really cute and cozy on the inside, and the service was great! The hamburgers are the best I've ever had. I actually stopped eating so many hamburgers and I vowed that the only time I would eat hamburgers would be at the Chalice. When people visit from out of town, we drive down to Oshkosh to get some hamburgers. The homemade fried potato chip thingees with cheese are awesome too.
