    Thursdays Lunch Special
    Alisa W.

This unassuming strip plaza eatery is much bigger inside than it looks with a bar area and a separate dining room that has tables and booths with plenty of room to move around. We stopped for lunch while out running errands in a rainy, chilly late May Pittsburgh day. We remembered this place has a great selection of rotating soups AND beers. How could we go wrong? We were warmly greeted as soon as we came in the bar entrance. There was a music variety playing at just the right volume to be pleasant and not intrusive. We sat at the bar and checked out the soup list first. I was super excited about the crab bisque! The beer board was great- a wide range of mostly local craft brews in a wide range of styles. The menu had a nice affordable ($12-$15) selection of sandwiches, burgers, wraps and salads, but not too many. (I am afraid of Cheesecake Factory menus) A little of something for everyone. I got the "pick 2" with the crab bisque and a 1/2 club sandwich. $12.50. Todd had the daily special; a cheeseburger, fries WITH a cold beer for $15! My bisque was creamy with a good amount of crab, but not a ton. (Sad face) It was really delicious- a great balance of salty and crabby sweet. The 1/2 sandwich looked a little small when it arrived, but on first bite I discovered it was piled high with fixings. Todd enjoyed the huge burger, a perfect medium and took half home. Fries were crispy and hot. Service was great! Attentive but not hovering. And the bartender really knew her beers! Overall, it was a pleasant yummy lunch break. Make a point to stop when you're in the area- try the crab bisque!

The Shorthorn Chili Cheeseburger was everything. Finally went to burger night. Soooo good!

It has been a few years since I wrote a review for Stoke's. Thought it was long time that I write a new one. Originally, I had said the service wasn't good. It has gotten much better over time. It doesn't take as long to sit down or receive your food. The staff is always very friendly and attentive. They take your order, bring your drinks and then check on you before and after the meal. It was great that the service got so much better. The food is still excellent. We have tried most things on the menu although we tend to have a lot of favorites that we flock to most times. My husband loves the French Dip and eats it almost every time we go. He just had it last night and loved it. The Shorthorn Burger is my favorite thing to get. It is huge, the burger is well cooked and the chili and cheese really make it. It is hard to find a good burger in a restaurant. This one is one of the best. My family really loved the BLT when they came to visit and we took them to this restaurant. We still really like the appetizers too. We have never had a bad meal here. You;ll like whatever you order. Go check them out. Get a beer, eat some great food and get some dessert. It's always great to support local businesses.

Stokes Grill is a good place to go to eat. They have a very friendly staff. The appetizers are good. The have a large selection of beers on tap. The meals are very tasty and they do not skimp on taste or portions. If you get a chance, I do recommend trying Stokes Grill!

Green Fries w Pesto Artichokes & Brie

Stoke's always has a nice beer selection on tap and plenty in the cooler to choose from. You can either eat in the bar area or the dining room - we prefer the bar area. The bartender is your server so if the bar is busy, sometimes they don't get to the tables as often as you might like but you can walk up and get their attention. Their food has been consistent over the few times we've been there. I really enjoyed the roast beef wrap which is nicely grilled and crispy on the outside. Their coleslaw and broccoli salad were both super good! We also tried the green fries which come with artichokes, pesto, and brie cheese that were very good. They get a nice mix of old/young patrons and the vibe is laid back.

    Pitt Dip

I ordered the Pitt Dip and really enjoyed it! Truly the taste of Pittsburgh with your sandwich topped with French fries. It also has provolone cheese, fried onion straws, and garlic aioli to add a wonderful combination of flavor. The roast beef is tender and not fatty, easy to eat and enjoy. On the side is au jus, which adds to the flavor and freshness of every bite when you dip your sandwich in it. As a side I got french fries. Which were crispy on the outside with a soft center, seasoned nicely with salt and pepper. Atmosphere is relaxing and welcoming. The staff is friendly and quick to get you your meal exactly how you ordered. Prices are reasonable for the portion sizes and quality of food. Definitely recommend checking this restaurant out. They have a large menu with plenty of options for everyone's preference and whatever you're craving, from salads to pizza to mac and cheese to burgers to sandwiches and wraps. Also a pretty good draft list of local beers to try.

    Monte Cristo

I am simply amazed as to how many restaurants there are along McKnight Road. I wasn't familiar with this place so we decided to see what it was all about. It's located in one of the older plazas along McKnight and it is almost hard to spot unless you are really looking for it. It is located in the same plaza as Lasik Vision. The place is very spacious, almost too spacious because the layout seems to be off balance or something. Large wide open dining room on one side and a separate bar with some tables throughout in the other room. Our waitress was in training so we had two servers. They were a cute team. Between the two of them we were thanked at least 25 times during our meal. Speaking of the meal, I did something I normally don't do - I ordered a sandwich that I absolutely had no real desire to try but I just had to order it to see how it would turn out. I ordered the Monte Cristo. The menu describes it as such: Ham, turkey and provolone. Battered and deep fried crispy and served with a side of roasted red pepper aioli. It looked liked fried chicken when it was served but I must say it tasted better than I thought it would but it was way too heavy to finish it myself. It would be something fun to order and share with a few people. The aioli gave it a nice zing. The menu overall offers grilled sandwiches, pressed sandwiches, wraps, hoagies, burgers, pretzel sandwiches, salads, 3 kinds of mac n cheese, homemade chips, homemade soups made from scratch, regular and specialty pizzas. My friend ordered the Stokes pick two which is a side salad or cup of soup with a half sandwich for $ 8.00. I look forward to another visit to Stoke's Grill.

Yes, it's a strip mall, but don't let that fool you. Allusion is a beer oasis tucked between life's greatest challenges: renewing your license and resisting discount snacks. Inside, it's clean, cozy, and no frills, which is exactly what you want when the beer is doing all the talking. And let me tell you, the beer has a lot to say. We tried the 1810 Oktoberfest and As You Wish (which made me feel like I was being serenaded by Wesley from The Princess Bride), and both were excellent. We also grabbed a Buffalo Chicken Wrap and a Reuben, each paired with a cup of clam chowder that was creamy, comforting, and possibly made with magic (or butter, which is basically the same thing). The proprietor was friendly, knowledgeable, and doing everything short of brewing the beer mid-conversation. Honestly, if he'd started juggling pint glasses, I wouldn't have been surprised. Long story short: the beers are top-notch, the food hits the spot, and the vibe is low-key awesome. Allusion has earned a spot on our regular rotation, and possibly a spot in our hearts.

Trivia and live music are sometimes available for entertainment. In the past few years, my husband and I have eaten at Wheelfish a few times. For our meals, the hostess and waitress promptly and politely served us. Here are my reviews for the foods: Pretzel bites - 4.5 stars - This appetizer was a large size. We really liked the flavor of the pretzels and the honey-mustard dip. We thought that the cheese dip was OK. Pulled-pork nachos - 5 stars - This appetizer of nachos was huge! Many tortilla chips were topped with gooey cheese, pulled pork, jalapeños, sour cream, and pico de gallo. Fried deviled eggs - 4 stars - The egg white was breaded and fried. It contained a yolk filling and was topped with a spicy jalapeño. We prefer traditional deviled eggs, but these ones tasted good. Mix-and-match soft tacos - 4.5 stars - The pulled-pork taco contained pulled pork and vegetable toppings that were very flavorful. For the brisket taco, I enjoyed the flavor of the brisket and toppings, but the juices made the tortilla soggy and caused it to fall apart. Shrimp tacos - 4.5 stars - These were on sale on a Thursday. The shrimp were breaded, and the toppings of napa slaw, mango salsa, and chipotle aioli tasted very good. Meat entrees - 4.5 stars - My husband liked the smoked chicken the most (5 stars), and he described it as being "delicious." We also ate ribs (4.5 stars), kielbasa (4 stars), brisket (5 stars), salmon (4 stars, needs more seasoning), and pulled pork (4.5 stars). Macaroni and cheese - 5 stars - My husband said that this macaroni was the cheesiest thing that he has ever eaten. He described it as "delicious." I ate some of the macaroni, and I agree that it was extremely cheesy. French fries - 5 stars - These fries were perfectly crispy and salty. Grilled vegetables - 4.5 stars - I wanted to make my meals more nutritious, so I chose a side of grilled vegetables, which are seasonal and included peppers, corn, squash, and zucchini. This mix of veggies had a very good flavor. Side salad - 4 stars - This salad contained a lettuce mix, some tomatoes, some pickled onions, and my choice of dressing. It was fresh but was slightly plain. Pork 'n beans - 3 stars - My husband ordered this side. He ate only a small amount of the beans and sauce, and he thought that they tasted just OK. For drinks, we had iced tea, diet Pepsi, and water. The waitresses brought refills.

It took them over a year to renovate it and they still aren't done in the back and the parking lot is a little rutted but the inside is very nicely done. There is a huge bar and some high and low tables scattered throughout. The clientele is mostly locals and lot of laborers grabbing a drink and a bite to eat after working hard all day which was great to see. It's super casual and very open inside. We had a few beers and the bartender was good. She was attentive and was waiting on 20 folks at the bar as well as table drinks. The manager was able to help serve some food to help her out but never once asked us how everything was. That was a little bit of a missed opportunity in my opinion for a new business. We ordered a breakfast burger that came with some hashbrowns on the side. I assumed, which is my fault totally, that the burger would come with lettuce, tomato, etc. but it truly was JUST a burger, egg, and cheese and absolutely no other toppings. That was disappointing and I really wish the bartender would have asked if I wanted anything on it. I ended up using ketchup for moisture since she was so busy and I was hungry. :) The hashbrowns were frozen and fried so they were nothing special. I think this place has tremendous potential. We'll be back to try something else. It seems busy so that's a good sign.

However, they were gracious enough to make it for me cold, with Mayonnaise and a slice of cheese. This is unlike another place down the road (RI) from them that wouldn't adjust items on a sandwich for me last week. The waiter/bartender was super chill too, easy to talk to and basically good at his job. Our refills came quickly and without asking. He followed up to see what we wanted a couple times and the food arrived in a reasonable time (not much waiting at all). This was so very different from that same day where at our usually spot (another old bar/restaurant further down the road, "SJ") we had to walk out just after ordering lunch due to getting attitude from a mouthy waitress. Glad we decided to try this new spot! Great job! I think we found our new local "go to" bar/restaurant. Looking forward to it and to soon trying breakfast there on weekends too. Most often we have gone for live music. This time we were in the area and just wanted to grab a drink. They did have a DJ though which was fun. It was also a great choice because they stay open late when so many local places close early. They do have a limited food menu but I have never eaten there. They have a variety of drinks ranging from non alcoholic to beer or wine, even cider. The cocktail menu is where it's at though. There are so many choices and some unique combinations. It's been fun trying so many. I think my favorite drink on the menu is Galeophobia which comes in a fun shark glass. It's fruity without being too sweet and the macadamia liquor adds just the right amount of nuttiness in the background. I seriously could drink several of them. The Spork House Punch is another favorite. Immediately *pinkies up* with the fancy little crystal mug. The pear and lemon gives such great flavor and it's well balanced and an easy drinker. It also feels like a good value with the amount you get. This time my fiancé tried Elvis' death and loved the toilet mug. He said it was tasty but a bit expensive for what it was so he probably wouldn't order it again. Fun bartenders, great drinks, good atmosphere, enjoyable entertainment.. what's not to love?
