This was just good old fashioned bbq. This place has the soul that Daynes was missing. Classic meats, well done, classic sides, good portions, and affordable. What more can you ask for? Is this up there with the great bbq places in the state? No. It's not trying to be. Hint hint daynes. Its a cafeteria style, you pick your meal, you go down the line, pick you sides and sauces..and your done. We had the three meat plate, and brisket sandwich plate. The meats on the plate were brisket, jalapeño sausage, and turkey. The sides on both plates were spicy pinto beans, Mac, and green beans. We had regular and spicy bbq. All the meats were good to great. The brisket was good, but missing that bark we like. The turkey was not dry. The best thing here, is when they say spicy, they mean spicy. Like runny nose spicy. Man it was good. The spicy bbq sauce was especially great. So just be careful because the beans were bordering on too spicy. The sausage was what daynes wished it could be. I know I keep ragging on daynes, but come here first, then go there and tell me if daynes belongs on any top list! I would pick still smoking any day! The Mac was delicious. The green beans were out of this world. Why not a 5? Well let's be honest, once you tried the true best in the state, it's hard to live up to it! I ordered the rib plate which is about $12 along with potato salad, jalapeño beans and a side order of pea salad along with a slice of carrot cake. Everything was perfect. Everything is homemade nothing is a Sysco product. The rib plate comes with about six very nice baby back ribs and the barbecue sauce is excellent bones have lots of meat on them and they were properly smoked and overall excellent The store is spotless as are the bathrooms, the serving line and customer service is spot on. If you're a truck driver like me this particular location has truck parking which is very convenient. Great find on our way back to Dallas from San Antonio! My husband literally said "I'm craving BBQ" and then we immediately saw a sign on the side of the highway that said "BBQ NEXT EXIT" lol so we just took a leap of faith and went for it. It's a small family run place where all the food is made in house. We did brisket plates with spicy BBQ sauce and for sides we had Mac n cheese and potato salad. It was all really tasty! The Mac n cheese was on the bland side but our kids loved it! Wish we had dessert too but we decided to avoid eating a lot of sugar. My oh My, the nice sized Chicken was unwrapped, and the meat was moist & had a great smoke flavor, no odd spices, guessing salt & pepper. The spicy sauce had a great flavor, yet didn't over power the meat. The greens and spicy beans were perfect, & the tea was also good. Surprisingly good for a small town BBQ place that's not participating in the trendy BBQ trend. I came up here on a Saturday afternoon with a couple of coworkers who swear by the place. I tried their Texas Trash, which is their version of brisket Frito Pie. The chopped beef is chopped to order unlike a lot of places where the chopped beef is pre-done and swimming in sauce. While there were a few pieces that were gristle, the meal was pretty good, especially with their spicy sauce. The spicy sauce actually had some kick to it. I also ordered ribs for the simple reason that the menu mentioned you could order a few ribs with any other item. The ribs were on point. The meat came off the bone easily and was cooked to perfection. I also appreciated that they were "old school" enough to serve Texas toast with the BBQ. In fact, they make the toast as you order it. I also appreciated how, even with the pandemic, they were thoughtful enough to have a wide variety of single serve condiments available. All in all, a pretty decent option if you're in the area and hungry. read more

We only discovered this place because the lines were insane (I stopped counting after 20 people) at Slovaceks and Czech Stop. An exit north, in Abbot, we saw signs for BBQ looming, oooohhhhh! The signage is pretty clear, but you can't really miss it as there are a bunch of windmills out front, I think they sell them. When we entered there was no one in line and I wasn't sure what to think about that. We walked to the end, where the dessert case was, and had a good view of the menu, which was easy to read. We each decided to get a small BBQ plate for $7.99. It's set up cafeteria style. Grab your tray and you'll be asked about your meat choice (we each went with fatty brisket) and then another gentleman will ask if you want spicy or mild BBQ sauce (he got spicy, I got mild), you help yourself to sides until you get the register. We were offered drinks, which are self service with unlimited refills. They have cookies and brownies at the register, but if you're me, you're asking what's good (pie vs. banana pudding) after getting the meat. They brought me a banana pudding from the dessert case and we paid. I noticed there was a separate dining area with larger tables, but we chose to stay where we were since it was near the entrance. Those tables are smaller and the two trays barely fit, but it worked out. My husband got a soda and I got a sweet tea, then we got down to business so we could chow down and get back on the road. I have to say that sweet tea is awesome! I emptied half my cup in one sip, it was so good and no, I'm not exaggerating. All you other sweet teas need to pay attention here, this was everything a sweet tea should be: bold, sweet without tasting over sugared, freshly brewed, refreshing and addictive. If we weren't headed back home to North Texas, I would have emptied out their supply and it would have only been for $1.69. It was delicious and I highly recommend! The brisket was very flavorful and we each liked our sauces. I felt the brisket was a little chewier than I like, so I would go for the lean next time. It was still very good. They don't skimp on the sauce here and I'm not much on sauce, so it was a little heavy handed for me, I would ask for an easy serving of that in the future. This is of course dependent on preference as after the first bite, my husband said with his mouth full that this was some good brisket. He really enjoyed his sauce, so if you like spicy, get that one! There was a huge selection of sides to choose from. I was under the impression that I could only get two sides, while my husband got a little bit of everything. I honestly can't recall if I was following the rules and they were just nice to my husband by not saying/charging anything, or if I made an assumption off every other BBQ place I've been to. Moving on, the sides were good. I really thought the parsley potatoes were amazing! They were so soft and tasty and I would keep going back for those! The potato salad was above average and executed properly. At this point I was given goodies from my husband's plate and I do not like okra, but I liked this okra. Wasn't too impressed with the cornbread salad, but I can't recall ever feeling that way about cornbread salad. The fried squash was outstanding, super crispy and savory, and I want some more of that! The banana pudding was really delicious! There was no skimping on the nilla wafers and the texture was perfect with a good amount of whipped cream. I enjoyed this a lot more than I normally do, so I have to give this a big thumbs up and recommend you get some banana pudding! It's worth every bit of that $2.99. The staff was so genuine and friendly. They were not only helpful with suggestions, but they cleaned behind each customer going through the line. After we sat down, there was a steady stream of people, many getting to go orders, and this was late in any lunch rush, so my initial concern was way off base. They also chatted with a lot of people and there was just a feel good vibe about the place. I'm kind of jealous of the locals. It's difficult to find a good BBQ place with great sides, and this place has an abundance. The sweet tea won me over before I even ate anything and the banana pudding can only be described as fantastic- great way to end a meal! Prices were very reasonable for the portions and taste, I was happy with what we got for the price we paid. While cleaning up our trays I asked what Texas Trash was and it sounds like a frito pie on BBQ crack, so I'm tempted to try that next time. We had a really great experience here, it's worth returning to and I enthusiastically recommend! read more

Make the drive! It is worth it! I stopped by there 2x while on my way to Dallas. I ordered the brisket with potatoes and green beans! As far as the sides--they lack flavor--- so I am not a fan. The ice tea was perfect and not too sweet. I really enjoyed it. The brisket was perfect-- well flavored. I don't eat a lot of salt but I know it's because my taste buds aren't used to it. I also enjoyed the bbq sauce which created a nice balance between the salt and the meat. The browny is really good! I enjoyed the meat and will return whenever I am in Texas. I decided to stop this time since I love me some BBQ, especially good, flavorful bbq. When I pulled into the place, there literally were no cars in the parking lot which had me worried. I decided to go inside anyways and the people inside were very friendly. I got the 3 meat plate which was $12.98 with tax, not bad. The dining area is fairly large so there's not issues in finding any space to sit down. Ok...the food. So the first two things I noticed was the lack of smoke ring on the brisket and the dryness of the brisket. I honestly was not impressed with the brisket, ribs or sausage. The sausage tasted extremely dry and parts of it were very hard due to how over cooked and dry it was. The ribs were ok but were small. The sides were average as well. Nothing really to brag about. Sorta like a moment in my life that I can say I tried it and won't be going back. Maybe I just caught them on a bad day. Idk. Anyways, I gave it 2 stars for the friendly service and cleanliness of the dining area. read more

Excellent food, the friendliest staff and the sides bar is so versatile. Nothing is bad here. We live in Dallas but have been coming here for years anytime we head south. We'll go off route just to make sure we stop by. My only complaint is my annoying kids, who wouldn't allow us to eat in peace but... that's not really their fault. We tried leaving them behind at the restaurant but CPS was all, "You can't do that", and "You're breaking so many laws, sir!" So anyway, I recommend the ribs. Been here for years. Love the selection and the sides are wonderful. I love their baked beans..and the ham is wonderful.. In the past the smoked chicken was always yummy.. But this time got a mixed plate of smoked turkey, ham and brisket.. All were yummy. Also save room for the deserts... They are open late and worth the stop. read more
