First of all, I want to say we will be back, and I really liked the service. It seemed like a small, family-owned business, and I genuinely hope it continues. We bought two meat plates and the BBQ potato. The potato was by far the best meal of the day. Nailed it. Portion sizes were great overall! The meat plate BBQ was alright. The issue we had was with the sides. I had mac and cheese and the potato salad. I will say, everything felt and tasted homemade. However, I feel like the chef is trying a little too hard to get authentic flavors. Let the BBQ be the star and give us some old-fashioned mustard potato salad and normal mac. Both of my sides tasted strange. They had a weird aftertaste, kind of sour or old, not sure. I never throw out food, but I didn't take the leftovers with me. My last critique is the actual BBQ sauce. It also tasted original and homemade but seemed to be trying too hard to be different. It almost felt like a tangy, sweet salsa or puree. Keep it simple, or perhaps offer choices between a general sweet traditional BBQ sauce and your homemade version. Giving it 4 stars until we visit and try again. read more

Food was amazing. Served by the family who kept checking on us and were so kind. Hospitality was spot on. So was the food. We had sliced brisket sandwiches which were stuffed with delicious brisket, perfect edges and tender. No BBQ sauce needed. First BBQ place that loaded my sandwich up with enough onions, pickles and jalapeños. We each ate our entire sandwich, it was huge but so good. This Wife/Husband duo is the Real Deal!! We realized we had passed it up too many times on the way to our weekend lake house. Sent hubs back for lunch...he didn't come back for an hour...so I knew what the problem was...he liked the people & he was visiting too much! Barbecue...as good as Terry Blacks in Dallas...no question. We called back and asked (wed evening)...if we could still get a 4 person thxgiving meal for thur....Such Amazing people! Went to a renowned chain new to downtown Waco previous weekend just to try a good BBQ sandwich & it was a bit salty, & although ok, not 100% on taste. *THEN* went to Bar-B-Que Chef's Smokehouse the next weekend on recommendation of a good friend in Whitney, TX, & it was really, REALLY good. Sliced brisket, pork ribs, jalapeño corn, mac & cheese (nice large shells), potato salad, & cole slaw (nice mildly seasoned) -- an hour round trip from us in the city of West, TX, but well worth the trip. If you want high dollar ($15) sandwiches & high-end tourist crowd, go to the Magnolia area in Waco to the nationwide chain newly installed in that area. But, if you can make it out a bit off IH35 to Whitney, Bar-B-Cue Chef's Smokehouse is highly recommended. With the obligatory white slice bread and pickles/onions (& really good BBQ sauce). We stopped here on a weekend trip to Lake Whitney. Wow! Great food, reasonable prices, and the best hospitality! Brisket was so tender and full of flavor. We also had the pulled pork, which made the bun wet according to the one that ordered in our group, but had good flavor. We also had brisket Mac and cheese, which was awesome. We also ordered jalapeño popper dip, which was a huge hit! They have a few picnic tables, but no indoor dining fyi. Great place. Great hosts. Give them a try if you're in the area. read more

This is easily the best barbecue place that I've ever eaten at. The turkey was amazingly juicy and the brisket was popping with flavor. The owners were very generous with their hospitality and were the kindest people I've ever encountered. Barbecue Chef is the best. We have always received the tastiest and very moist meat from here. The brisket has been perfect, some fat but not too much. The sausage is delicious. The smoked turkey is awesome. Plenty of good meat on the ribs. We like their choice of sides. They only open on the weekends. If you want to eat there, it's picnic tables under the trees. No inside dining. Little off the beaten path but close to Lake Whitney, Cedron and McCown Park just east of the KT bridge over the lake. read more
