An absolute MUST STOP along I-35 and now my second visit to West, Texas (not West Texas, which is completely different). I've been to the other one and now I am here. And while the other one is great and fabulous, this one is one star better. A huge selection of baked goods, coffee, decor, clothing, drinks and more. The Kissing Pig Cafe has so many food options, too! Mrs. K. has not had a kolache in years and she's now pescatarian which presents certain challenges. It would be awesome if they had some kolaches with just cheese or were sweet, so while I had one with ham and cheese and one with sausage in cheese, she was at least able to enjoy a strawberry and cream danish as well as the always awesome poppyseed kolache. It's possible that a pecan square was purchased for later consumption, too. But I still get it at various restaurants and have to say that it was a five dollar sandwich for thirteen bucks. This has always been a tradition to stop by in West, when we are traveling by. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The new location across the street is awesome. My family was in the restaurant business for over 75 years in the Dallas area so I like my BBQ a certain way. Smoked, a little fat for moisture and flavor. Sauce that adds to the meat flavor, not overwhelms it. I've been to Slovaceks twice in the past 6 weeks and had a sliced beef sandwich that did not disappoint. There isn't overpowering "rub" on the meat!!!! Yay!!! If you smoke a brisket the right way, you doesn't need anything else. The sauce was delicious. Placed an order to last us for our three-day vacation. The bread part of the kolaches didn't fair well after 24 hours, should have planned better. Shopped-12.21.25: 1st time here on the drive to Waco. They carry a variety of baked loaf sized cakes and a variety of Xmas decor for sale. They carry Xmas decor year round & even have a BBQ'd meat counter where freshly cooked meat is sold. The kolaches are the best I've had so far. Tried the spicy jalapeño, w/sausage & cheese....it was DELICIOUS w/ a nice kick. Leaving Texas and Slovacek's was on my list... so we had to stop. I was not prepared for what was inside. Definitely not just food and gas.. large variety of odds and ends. Funny socks to an array of Nutcrackers. Antiques to a full meat market with sausages and game meats. BBQ spot to multiple Kolaches. And everything in between. Everyone there was very friendly. Seemed to enjoy their jobs and you can tell their bakery items and kolaches are made with care. My son got a breakfast burrito even though it was mid afternoon- he said it was one of the best he has had because the sausage tasted homemade. I assume they use to house made sausage. As we were leaving we saw that next door was an entire other store that said Slovacek's Furniture with a large array of outside decorations before entering. While it isn't buc-ees, it's a great alternative. First, they have a bunch of pumps and have Exxon gas. Exxon is a top tier gas and personally think it's the best. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Restrooms are clean. Got to walk around and see lots of wacky items for sale. The line for the baked goods was long but moved quickly. Lots to choose from and I had 2 brisket kolaches, a sausage and pepper jack one and two sweet raspberry and cheese. Also had a 2 meat plate with sliced brisket and some ribs. Baked beans and loaded mashed potatos. Every thing was ao good and fresh. Grabbed a loaf of white bread to toast up with breakfast the next day and it stayed moist and soft. 100% recommend this place read more

Quick review. Each of these places in West are top notch. They each have good service (even though they stay busy), good food, and tons of selection. It is purely a personal preference on which store you like most. Slovacek's is unique in that it is renowned for its sausage. It is the best "German style" (I know, that's heresy) sausage I have ever eaten. The Pork and Beef is my goto flavor. I have 10-20# of it in my freezer at all times. I like Slovacek's. The store has a lot of things to check out. The service is very helpful. Only thing is - the kolaches don't match up to my memory of stops in West when I was a kid. I stopped on a Saturday afternoon and there was still a good selection but there was nothing ethereal about the kolaches like the ones we used to get in town. I only had a few of the raspberry and cottage cheese ones. I know - cottage cheese sounds weird but these were ridiculous back in the day. Now they are just not the same. My wife argued with me that they were never that great (she never tried any from back in the 70's and 80's) but I verified with my siblings that YES, they used to be amazing and NO they are not as good anymore. I'll still stop at Slovaceks for the excellent restroom and I'll need to try the sausage which sounds good. If I was just rating for the kolaches alone I would have gone with 2.5 stars. Pulling into this location, there are two buildings. The large Christmas store and the fuel station/gift shop/kolache kitchen. We went to get kolaches and it didn't disappoint. The store area, inside the gas station side, is large, but very full of merchandise. We saw a cabinet full of out of country nutcrackers, all very nice and well made, and all very expensive. Ranging from $68 to $1000 plus. So cool to look at, protected by the cabinet. The kolache area is a large glass cabinet with so many kolaches and sausage rolls. I don't recall what they are called, but a Kolache is a pastry, not a sausage roll, and they have a sign that very much says that. Staff was so helpful. The line isn't static, as several folks were like us, trying to look and take it all in as first timers. The staff was very patient with us, as well as others. They help customers as the customer is ready. The rolls are very good, the kolaches absolutely were not disappointing. Thick pastry with yummy sugary jelly in the middle. So good warmed up, as they will gladly do. Not disappointed at all. We will be making this a regular stop on our way south. read more

If you find yourself driving down 35 between DFW and Austin, you need to stop at Slovacek's and get kolaches. Slovacek's is also a gas station so you can stop for gas and get a snack, or just stop for the snack. The spots right up front can get full, but they have plenty of parking beside the building. When you walk into the store, you might get overwhelmed by all the souvenirs and trinkets they have, the store is a decent size and they really pack it full of stuff. Now if you are there for the kolaches, you'll want to walk towards the back. They have a few cases full of kolaches. They have meat ones and fruits ones, and they also have other baked goods too. They usually have a line for the kolaches but it moves fast. I recommend standing behind the line and looking at all the different flavors they have before you get in line. Last time I was there I got the pepperoni and peach with cream cheese, and both were phenomenal. You can get other things from this store, but to me the kolaches are the reason to stop. read more

Everyone knows that Texans love to talk Texas. I'm no exception, and something I love explaining to people who haven't been to Texas is that it's way more diverse than you think (topographically and in population). Central Texas has historic German and Czech communities/towns, for example - and it's something that a lot of people (even Texas) may not be aware of. West is a historic Czech community - known as the "Czech Heritage Capital of Texas" and the home of the kolache. Whenever I'm in the area, I always want to stop for a kolache, which is a Czech pastry of yeast dough and various fillings (sweet or savory). There are lots of places you can get kolaches in West (and even in most Texas cities - I used to eat a less traditional version growing up in Dallas, where they were sold next to donuts at donut shops), but Slovacek's is an amazing option and well worth a stop. I was driving from Dallas to San Antonio with my brother earlier this month, and we made a point to stop at Slovacek's. (It's also a gas station, so two birds one stone!) The kolache counter is something special - so many varieties! I panicked and ordered the first four that called to me (brisket; sausage, cheese, and jalapeno; apricot and cream cheese; and prune), but while those were being warmed up, I saw so many more I wanted (how could I forget to get a poppy seed!??!?! Next time!). All four were great. If you're in the area, you should definitely stop by Slovacek's and try one of their many kolaches. It's a special Texas experience. read more
