My mother has been a loyal customer of Stewart's Ace Hardware in Clinton for over 7 years. She recently purchased a $900 Weber natural gas grill (Spirit S-425), believing it was fully stainless steel like her previous Genesis model. There was no floor model to inspect, and she trusted the store's description and history. When the grill arrived, it had only stainless trim, no wheels, and was clearly not the heavy-duty model she expected. She declined delivery politely and even offered to pay the price difference or use gift cards to upgrade to the better model. They refused. Instead of working with her, they issued a refund--and then left her a voicemail telling her never to shop there again. Their own voicemail admitted it was a "snafu" and they "don't normally sell natural gas grills," but punished her for not accepting a downgrade. This wasn't about being difficult. It was about being fair. After over 7 years of loyalty, this was their response. If this is how they treat long-time customers, I encourage others to think twice before shopping here. read more

I shop here often but no longer. I called the store and requested a gallon of mixed paint that I would pick up within the hour. The store can mix at their convenience and I avoid the long lines waiting for them to mix. I offered my credit card over the phone in advance. They said no that I had to come in, order and wait in line. Poor customer service! I do this often and other stores accommodate. What a great hardware store. As soon as you walk in, someone greets you . I ask the person about a item that I needed and he took me to the item and helped me pick it out. The place had numerous employees around the store to assist you on your needs. At check out, as soon as a few people were in line, a second clerk start ringing out customers. The exceptional customer service I received was not just a one shot deal. I had to return later to get something else and I received the same service. Pillars and paint Ace Hardware was started back in 1924 and although many people think of their local Ace Hardware store as a small and quaint type of place, Ace is actually is the largest hardware company in the world with almost five thousand stores in sixty countries. And of course they rake in billions of dollars annually. This particular Ace in Clinton, Ct is pretty typical, smaller than some but larger than others. Like many Ace's, they put a whole bunch of stuff out in front of the store which kind of gives it a casual and old fashion hardware store look. Inside the store they have a whole lot of stuff, some of it a total mystery to me. We came there for the paint and they did indeed have paint, Lots of paint. Just amazing how many different shades of yellow or brown that they have, each one with a cute and whimsical name. Someone must have a whole lot of fun thinking up all these names. Like most Ace's the employees are friendly, efficient and know exactly where everything it. Ask for the most obscure thing and they'll take you right to it and tell you exactly how to use it. Huge warehouse hardware and appliance stores seem to be proliferating in many places but as long as Ace keeps giving it's friendly and personalized service, there will always be a place for it. read more

I needed a large item delivered, and I needed it right away. Instead of Amazon or a big box store, I decided to go to a local retailer, and I'm so glad I did! They picked up the phone on the first or second ring, explained the whole process, and charged a very competitive price for exactly what I was looking for. Fantastic little hardware store in Clinton. Has pretty much everything you'd need to fix up your cottage and lots of staff to help you find things. Why not five stars? Those are pretty much reserved for the crusty old hardware stores with miles of cabinets filled with hardware and tool arcana, that you could easily spend a whole day in. This isn't that. What an incredible asset to the Town of CLINTON, CT. The staff greets you at the door and either directs you or walks with you to your shopping destination. I had a relatively new porch umbrella that had a broken main pole caused a severe wind storm. That was no problem for the crew at Steward's Hardware. Always a pleasure! I found Stewards Hardware during an open house shortly after they opened. I've been shopping there pretty much exclusively ever since. I'm a big 'do-it-yourselfer' and family guy. It's like this store was built for me. It's a family owned business and they treat my family like their own whenever I'm there. They are always quick to offer help and suggestions for the projects I'm tackling. Even the employees who may not have the answers know enough to check in with someone who does. Their prices are always right in line (or better) with the 'big box' stores. And typically when everyone else is sold out of something (generators, pumps, flashlights) they somehow are always ready to restock. I can't speak highly enough about them and absolutely never hesitate to recommend them to family and friends. read more

I want to take the opportunity to express my deep gratitude to Alex, Tom, Ben and the ownership at Steward Hardware in Clinton. My car would not start and had an alert that no Key was Detected..I turned to them and Ben, who to his credit said have it towed to the store and they would program a key. I understood that such a request and suggestion was highly unusual but it is a credit to Ben and his desire to provide the utmost in customer service. I had the car towed to the store today and Alex jumped right on the issue and attempted to program a key, however, for some reason it didn't initially work. Alex called Duracell twice to address the problem. After several hours of effort, Duracell suggested it was perhaps a fuse for the security system. After I replaced the fuse, Tom allowed Alex to try one last time. It worked!! The level of customer service provided by Alex and Tom goes above and beyond what you can expect from a hardware store. In this time of dire times in dealing with the Covid 19 virus, it was refreshing and encouraging to find people who were to go above and beyond, to go the extra mile and help someone in need. The demand of the time on Alex was significant but it's a credit to the management of Stewards to hire such compassionate people. It's heartwarming, in a time of strife like this, that people are willing to put aside that extra dollar and assist people in need. All people should take an example from Alex, Tom and Ben and the ownership of Steward, who showed compassion and were willing to put profit motives and shown that human compassion and dignity matter more! I have always been treated very well by everyone working there. I had purchased a generator just befor Hurricane Sandy hit. It died 30 hours into the storm. Stewards loaned me a back up untill mine was fixed. Who else would go that far, Home Depot wouldn't. I will always shop at Stewards. read more

Absolutely terrible. I was treated like garbage by the manager when I asked her recheck a size of plexiglass that I was ordering. After trying to explain my situation multiple times she was still sitting there yelling at me in front of customers. I highly recommend to use any other hardware store in the area. read more

This store is awesome. From the moment you walk into the store you are presented with great service. Their prices are good, their hours are long and their open seven days a week. The shelves are fully stocked and very very clean. I have always been able to get what I was looking for in the store, and if they don't have it, they have always been able to get it for me in a couple of days. I love this place! Very clean store with friendly and knowledgeable staff. You walk in and there is always somebody to help you find what you need.Great selection of hardware, gardening tools and household items. What's great too is that you can walk in there and buy just the one screw you need. Try doing that at Lowes or Home Depot! The location is very convenient too with plenty of free parking out front.
