    Fried chicken, green beans, slaw
    Kelly M.

Fried chicken was room temperature and dry. Gizzards were over cooked, more breading than meat. Hush puppies were hot and fresh, however, not given at seating like normal. When asked, server said they didn't have a basket to serve them. Huh? Basically best part of the meal was the green beans. Probably won't be back. Heard new cooks, but still.

If you're looking for classic Southern comfort food in a laid-back, no-frills setting, Stephenson's BBQ hits the mark. I recently stopped in and tried the combo chicken and BBQ plate with French fries and green beans, and rounded it out with a side of banana pudding. The BBQ itself was tender and had good texture, but I found it could've used a bit more flavo, adding the table sauce probably would have made a noticeable difference but I didn't. The chicken, on the other hand, was pretty good: crispy skin, just the way it should be. Sides were solid; housemade French fries were hot and satisfying, and the green beans were nothing special but I love some green beans. As for the banana pudding, it was just okay. I never thought I'd say this, but there were too many Nilla wafers in the mix. A little more pudding would've balanced it out better and softened those crunchy cookies. Service was warm and welcoming, and the atmosphere is what you'd expect from a true Southern BBQ join, unpretentious and cozy. Stephenson's isn't trying to reinvent the wheel; they're just serving up straight-ahead BBQ with Southern charm. I'd come back, especially for that chicken, and next time, I'll reach for the sauce a little sooner.

"Tell me you don't know anything about eastern NC barbecue without saying you don't know anything about eastern NC barbecue." That's how I feel about many of the negative reviews about Stephenson's. Not that everything's perfect here but it still is a more than fair representation of ENC 'cue. Everything about the friendly service, seen-better-days decor, dirt parking lot, and clearly local fellow diners tells you that you're in the right place, although they really could stand to sand down the floors. The fried livers and gizzards were the stars, as far as I'm concerned. The hot, crispy coating was peppery and delicious. Had the fried chicken been any fresher it would have still been clucking but it was disappointingly underseasoned. The Brunswick stew could have been a bit warmer but it wasn't bad at all. The pulled pork was noticeably smoky and a touch too salty but was still good. The slaw was a little bit sweet due to the addition of relish and the boiled potatoes were a little more highly seasoned than normal. These are matters of personal taste, though, not quality. All in all, the food is good and Stephenson's is worth a visit if you're in the area.

Great food! Friendly service! Highly recommended the large pig plate with green beans and the hush puppies are always amazing

Three of us dropped in for a late lunch, and the food was so good that we ordered still more food to take home for dinner. We started with a pork platter with sides of coleslaw and collard greens, and two mixed plates of pork and Brunswick stew, with sides of french fries, green beans, and more coleslaw and greens. Hush puppies came with all 3 plates, and the lightly crusted, moist and chewy NC staple proved so good that we ordered two dozen more (at 14 cents each). The Brunswick stew has terrific texture and taste, and the East Carolina style pork worked well with the vinegar sauce on the table. We added vinegar and a splash of Texas Pete to the greens, which made them very, very good indeed. The coleslaw worked well with the pork, and the house cut french fries were fresh and hot. Only the green beans failed to impress. A not overly sweet, well balanced banana pudding provided a smooth finish. We got 3 more, and another dozen hush puppies for the road. For $50.13 including tip, this was good eating!

I had no clue what to expect being a first time patron. My spouse had been here several times and was always raving about how good it was. The stars aligned and we finally made it during a meal time. We came in and ordered and paid at the counter, found our seats, and then waited while our food was being prepared. There's something to see on every wall, and you can tell they know what they're doing with all of the trophies on display that they've won throughout the years. The indoor seating isn't too ample, so don't plan a family reunion, but it can hold a few families at dinner time. There's not a bad meat on the menu. If you're a vegetarian, this is not your new favorite spot. We got their brisket, chicken leg, and smoked turkey. The sauces at the table were tasty, and everyone found a favorite. We were thankful for the ample supply of paper towels, because our littles chowed down and needed to be wiped clean. This Redneck BBQ Lab knows what they're doing. On this particular night, they had too many leftover chicken halves towards the end of the evening, and were selling them half off, so we ate our food, and then got chicken to go for a future meal. Stop in and try it sometime.

If yer like me, n want leftovers for late-night tv watchin', or t'take to work for lunch t'marra, go ahead n order a half pound. I ordered brisket, which was so tender it fell apart on my fork, n sausage, which was already cut in slices for me but dripping juice anyway. (They serve it right here, too, obviously). You git yer choice of their house sawses. Their Grand Champion Sawse, which is a smoky-tangy-sweet, or Competition Sawse, which is "tangy-sweet w/a little heat" (I didn't find it "hot" but I'm used t'eatin' jalapenos) or the North Carolina Sawse, which is yer Tarheel Vinegar style. They're all good, and I et a bit o each, but the Competition Sawse is prolly my fave. The food is very reasonably priced, especially for bbq, and you won't spend n arm n a leg if'n ya eat here. We love their vittles, n plan t'ask 'em about catering our anniversary party t'add a touch o class t'the occasion. Recommend highly!!!

Big Foot makes what old timers sit around and talk about when they discuss their archetypal pig-pickin', that is to say: slow-cooked (locally-farmed) whole hog, on charcoal and wood smoke, served chopped with plenty of bark, with sides that make sense. The ribs are country-style: thick, still juicy, with a bit of snap, and with a perfect bone-to-lean ratio. They do bird, too, and do it surprisingly well. Their smoked chickens are moist and delicious, and perfect for Sunday dinner. Want a real treat? Try their smoked chicken salad on some Strong Arm focaccia one afternoon. Sauces vary to please the discerning BBQ palate, but there's nothing over-the-top. This isn't competition barbecue, it's barbecue that people line up for on Sunday afternoon, it's the kind of barbecue that people seek out when they are driving through Granville County on the way home from Virginia, because if you know, you know (and want). Kelly and team sometimes go off piste with some more creative sides, but again, they make sense, like the barbecue/collards/sometimes Mac-and-cheese egg rolls that show up in a catering spread. You should always choose their fantastic string beans (get anything green on the side, for that matter). Big Foot pops up in the Triangle, so be on the lookout- it's authentic, pork-and-smoke-forward North Carolina barbecue, a whole-hog experience that will not disappoint. Until there's a brick and mortar, you can find their next service on Instagram and Facebook.

The outdoor seating has outdoor fans and table fans for bugs and the inside bathrooms are super clean and sleek with mints and toothpicks! As I said very thoughtful! Came by on a Thursday a little after opening and waited maybe like 30 min or so to order; pacing was pretty fast turn around for how many people were already here. Customer service is great and there are workers that make sure that you have all you need. They were also great handling a dairy allergy for my kids! So service and ambiance 5/5 The food! We got a bit of everything. Moist Brisket: 4/5 it was very tender for the most part and was great flavor, a little tough in some places but really good overall! Cheddar Jalapeno sausage: 3.5/5 about average but slightly better. Could use more kick (but my wife thought it was spicy) The casing was a little tough in my opinion, but the overall flavor was pretty good. Beef cheek (this was a special for Thursday): 5/5 SUPER TENDER and great flavors. It was similar to a burnt end texture on the outside but the inside was amazing tender. Was great! The ribs! 5/5 This was honestly the star of the show. It had a great bark crust flavor and amazingly tender, wow, it was amazing and I don't say that lightly. Would 100% order again. The pulled pork:4/5 how do you say this is an average pulled pork feel like it's kinda hard to mess this one up, but it was pretty good. A standard pulled pork! As for the sides, they were okay if I'm honest. The baked beans were pretty good. I got it only because someone recommended it, but I normally am not a baked beans kind of guy. It was a little bit on the sweeter end but not bad at all. The mac & cheese was an average mac & cheese. Nothing super amazing or great but good enough I guess. My kids didn't devour it as they would have in other places so I guess that goes to show that it was just average. Overall, I would come here for the meats because that is what they're known for!
