    Sweet and sour cauliflower
    Vee V.

Love this place, design is welcoming, modern, cool. Our server was fast and efficient, and food was excellent. Full package. The sweet and sour cauliflower is a winner. I had some to take home and it will definitely be served with rice. I'm on the hunt for a new favorite burger spot in the twin cities, the cooper was damn good, it's a contender for sure. I'm a classic burger gal, it has to be hot, juicy and salty beef, gooey cheese, perfectly crisp and crunchy pickles, sauced right, on a soft bun. The pork belly and coconut rice dish was very good as well. The kimchi was the star for me, it had a horseradish flavor and kick to it, which was phenomenal. I want a jar of the kimchi. I can't wait to return to try the wings next.

Stepchld was beyond delicious tonight for dinner with my friend! Starting out, the waitress was so friendly and helpful with giving suggestions to a first timer. I started with an orange wine, which I didn't even know was a thing. So yummy and dry - just like I like it. We shared the brussel sprouts and sweet potato fritters. The goat cheese and honey is such an amazing combo - melt in your mouth and close your eyes good. I had the spicy shrimp with bread, and even being lactose - I fought thru all the fabulous butter and it was 100% worth it. My friend had the burger and said it was so good as well! The natural lighting made it so beautiful tonight - the vibes were vibing. Ended with a little tiramisu for the perfect dinner in Minneapolis

I finally made it to this place--one I'd heard about in passing, always meaning to try, but never quite getting around to it. Now, with news that it's closing, I made the trip. I wish I'd come sooner. I tried the burger, wings, and two appetizers--carrots and fries. The burger was juicy, with a soft bun. The wings came coated in a dry rub that hit all the right notes paired with a crisp skin that gave way to tender meat. The carrots were cooked just right, warm with a slight bite left to them, and the shoestring fries came out golden and crisp, the kind you keep reaching for without realizing. I'm a huge garlic fan and appreciated the minced garlic on the fries. We finished with the tiramisu, split four ways, though I could've easily polished it off myself. Light but rich, creamy with just enough coffee to linger. One of the better versions I've had--no frills, just done incredibly well. It's strange, discovering something worth holding onto just as it slips away. This was my first visit, but not my last. I'll be back before the lights go out for good--not just for the food, but for what it made me feel: like I'd stumbled into something meaningful, a little too late.

So unfortunate to hear about so many restaurants closing, including this one (closing in Aug). We were looking to stop in over the past weekend but reservations were booked out until Monday night. We were able to get 8:30pm for a group of 3. Which worked out because parking was pretty open in the area. We arrived right at 8:30 to check in and they weren't quite ready to seat us so we had to wait a few minutes. Once we were given a table we had to wait a bit longer before meeting our waitress. The waitress was very nice and answered all the questions we had about the restaurant, drinks and food. We ordered a round of drinks to start, I got the coffee martini, which was my first time trying a "espresso martini" it was really good and smooth. I seen a lot of the drinks had bitters which I don't personally care for. My friends got the marigold mule mocktail and added tequila. Originally my friend got the margarita but didn't care for it, they were very accommodating with letting her switch the drink out. Later on I ordered the "it's been said before" cocktail- it was different. We ordered the sweet and sour cauliflower and magic dust wings for appetizers. The cauliflower was definitely an impulse decision, so I'm so glad we got it, it was so GOOD, the strawberries were an interesting twist but it worked so well! The wings were seasoned well and generally good, I just wish they were a bit crispier. For entrees we tried the cooper burger (I got mine w/ impossible meat), pistachio pesto orecchiette and lavender nori shrimp. The food was generally flavorful and good all around. Smaller restaurant so I definitely get how it books up quick but for sure worth checking out before they close the doors for good. The vibes were good all around despite the fate of the restaurant.

I could have sworn I wrote a review for here... I have tried the entire menu and I love everything here. The stand outs are the sweet potato fritters which are a sweet and savory crispy yet soft fritter that is great as an app and as a dessert. The wings are crispy, meaty, and flavorful with a nice clean fresh ranch to dip it in... The pesto pasta is to die for. It is light, fresh, green, with a hint of lemon and a beautiful light shell pasta... The shrimp nori is a personal favorite. It is a little warm and spicy with beautifully poached shrimp and shreds of nori and a creamy sauce served with some amazing warm grilled sourdough bread.. another staple. A new addition to the menu was a seafood paella.. wow.. that flavorful, fresh, light with some great seafood and a gorgeous rice. This place NEVER disappoints. I love the energy in here, I love to sit at the bar personally because the tables are a bit small. The wait staff is always amazing and helpful and we never experience any issues. This is a staple !

This restaurant is lovely and has an excellent, intimate vibe. We sat at the bar but were quite comfortable. The staff was friendly and attentive. I am not sure if they are responding to dry January or if this is a regular feature but two mocktails are on the menu. The blueberry Juniper is a tart piney delight. The food itself was fine. The concepts on the menu were really Interesting but the preparation was not very tasty. Much of the flavor was in the toppings and sauce that accompanied the items. We started with the sweet potato fritters. The flavor was reminiscent of sweet potato pie, but with a hint of heat. The goat cheese added an interesting complexity. The mushroom tacos were okay. I love mushrooms but these did not have the depth of flavor I was hoping for. Those are all I would describe it as an OK experience. I just really had been hoping for more.

Overall: Some of the food was great, some so-so. It's a small dining room with a long stretch of bar seeting, a beautiful brickwork bar, and colorful murals. They were out of a bunch of items when we went in on a Sunday night. (One of them was cauliflower and another was a carrot dish, and I am unsure how you run out of those by 6 pm, unless you just didn't... buy enough vegetables?) All told, they were out of 3 apps and one main, and the menu isn't that big to begin with. The Brussels sprouts with apricots and almonds were AMAZING. I would go back just to eat those. But that starter was the best thing we had. The starter wings were good. The bierra tacos were good, but not mind blowing. The Baja salad was uninspired in terms of flavor- I added shrimp and that was tasty, and but I didn't think the dressing had a lot of flavor. Maybe that is why there were jalapenos in the salad, but I didn't want that many raw jalapenos because then that's all you taste. Points were given for having yummy N/A beverages. However, they also cleared the whole table while I was still eating, so I didn't love that. Unfortunately wasn't super impressed (except for the brussel sprouts) so 3 stars.

Amazing flavors with each dish. We absolutely enjoyed the sweet potato fritters, tiger from Burma salad and birra tacos. I made a reservation online. Parking is on street. Was seated immediately upon arrival. Our waitstaff was friendly and just right attentive. The pots de crème had the consistency of banana bread batter and explosion of banana flavor. Maybe not quite right for me but we also ate it all?!? The bathroom was extremely clean but also extremely cold. The downfall of an exterior facing wall in a closed door room...

Visiting Minnesota for the first time, and in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, we wanted to at least have dinner at one restaurant in downtown Minneapolis. Stepchild more than fitted the bill with a wonderful seasonal bar menu in a lovely interior with bamboo woven seats and black leather booths and awesome glass art lighting. While they didn't have their liquor license yet at the time we visited the location, the experience was still deeply satisfying. For drinks, I settled on their Pomalo Methode Ancestrale Debit sparkling wine made in Croatia. It was delicious sparkling wine to where I ordered two glasses. For dinner, my wife enjoyed the pork belly and ginger coconut rice that was served with Kimchi, sesame seed, gochujang aioli, and lime leaf curry. Since my wife is celiac, we had the aioli served on the side since that had gluten. It was absolutely magical and savory. Additionally, we enjoyed the Ethiopian Birria tacos that were also gluten free, made with berbere spice, Monterey Jack, corn tortillas, white onion, cilantro, pickled red onion. The Ethiopian Birria tacos were the bee's knees; so savory and delicious. For dessert, the miso caramel pot de crème was fantastic (also gluten-free) made with Banana Chantilly cream and toasted pecan. It capped off an amazing meal from an amazing restaurant where we were served well by the man who ensure we had what we needed.

Delicious crafty drinks, tasty burger and fries. Cool ambiance and friendly staff. Highly recommend a reservation. Street parking with a lot at the other end of the block.

    Sweet Potato Fritters ($18)

Came by on a Wednesday night after seeing them advertise an "off-kilter concept" and "exploratory menu" and was barely able to get a seat at the bar. Would definitely recommend making a reservation due to the smaller capacity. Started off with the Maitake Mushroom Tacos ($18), which were certainly flavorful but nothing elevated or different. The main course of the Pistachio Pesto Orecchiette ($18) was disappointing, as the pasta barely had any flavor to it. While the Sweet Potato Fritters ($18) are technically an appetizer on the menu, my server suggested I take it last due to the sweetness. While the combination of the whipped goat cheese and maple syrup wasn't my favorite, I at least appreciated the unique blend of flavors. Overall an okay experience, but far from advertised.

Even with StepCHLD closing at the end of August, this was still a great place to try delicious food, experience impeccable service, and people watch. Everyone was incredibly friendly, and people were talking to one another to ask about menu options. It was a very friendly and warm environment between the staff and its customers.

Shrimp Nori, in a delicious spicy cream sauce

Yum! I came to a conference in Minneapolis. The conference leadership had this restaurant on their list of recommendations. I whole-heartedly concur! We came 5 strong. All of us had the Ethiopian Birria Tacos, 3 full plates, and 2 a la carte. Three of us also got the chicken wings; two raved, and one said it was nothing special. Another got the mussels, and another the Shrimp Nori. We all delighted in our meals.

The wine list is really thoughtful and leans toward smaller, lesser-known producers and unique regions. Even if you know wine well, there are still plenty of interesting picks here. Just note that by-the-glass options are limited, so it's more of a place where you end up ordering a bottle. The space is beautifully designed. Very minimal, clean, and intentional. It feels elevated without being overdone. It is definitely expensive for what it is. Both the wine and food lean high in price, but you're also paying for the atmosphere and overall experience. The menu is also a bit different in a fun way. The tinned fish selection stands out and isn't something you see often. The radish butter and bread was a highlight and absolutely worth ordering. Service is a little unconventional since you order at the counter, which feels a bit off given the pricing, but everything still runs smoothly.

We wanted a recommendation and the wine picked for us was excellent. Went with the Plavac Milos. The food is honestly incredible! The carrots were my favorite. Someday I'll get enough courage to try the tinned fish. I wish seating was a little more comfortable for the whole "drink a bottle and stay awhile" vibe. It also can get pretty loud when it's busy in the tight quarters.
