I really wanted to like Steamers, especially because it has the feel of a local community spot, but the experience was surprisingly disappointing before I even got to the food. The reception at the counter was ice cold. My order was marked as ready, yet I watched what turned out to be my food sit in the window for several minutes before finally asking if it was mine. No welcome, no thank you, no "sorry about the wait" or acknowledgment that it had been sitting there. Unfortunately, the order itself felt just as thrown together. The fries were cold and mushy, the barbecue sauce somehow ended up with the gyros, and very little seemed organized or thoughtfully prepared. They didn't appear especially busy, which made the whole experience harder to understand. The saving grace was the ribs. These were genuinely good: tender, flavorful, smoky, and the kind of ribs where you keep going back for one more bite even after the rest of the meal has disappointed you. The mobile ordering system asks for a tip. I'm usually very happy to tip, but this was one of those experiences where even the basics of friendly service felt missing. I hate to give a bad review to any place, but I'm doing this so that the business can improve on a few things. Just for reference our favorite barbecue place is Mission barbecue. We got the barbecue pulled pork sandwich, pulled chicken sandwich with a side of fries and macaroni and cheese. We were a little disappointed that there was no iced tea or fresh lemonade. usually at a barbecue place you would expect sweet tea / unsweet tea and lemonade. There was none of that just soft drink options. I did not like the BBQ sauce on the chicken. It was watery and not good. Would have been nice to have options of sauces on tables. The Mac and cheese has the consistency & taste of Velveeta cheese. Was not good. Not your typical southern baked Mac and cheese. The fries tasted like they were from a frozen bag and overcooked. Most were hard. My husband wanted the pulled pork with Cole slaw on top like NC style. He did that for us but charged $2 for a very small cup of slaw to throw on top. Ordered 4 hot dogs. The hot dogs were not cooked. I don't mean they cooled off during delivery. No, these were ice cold inside and had a texture inside of a hot dog straight out of the refrigerator. When i called the restaurant, I was greeted by a rude employee who insisted the hot dogs were just fine. He wouldn't let me speak, talking over me, very defensively. I ordered uber eats for dinner today and I got a double burger with grilled onions and bacon. I open up the container to find my burger swimming in grease. I went to put it in my plate and it too was swimming in grese. I work in the food industry in a restaurant kitchen and I know what they did the must have deep fried my burgers in the fryer with the bacon that I know for sure the deep fried that. For the price changed for a Texan Beef Brisket, I would have hoped to receive more than a few scrawny pieces of meat hidden under coleslaw. Also when you order a hamburger without the tomato and lettuce, they charge a dollar if you add onions. What about a credit for the removed items? Person at the counter was rude. We were very disappointed! I was under the impression it was a new restaurant with a new owner but even the bathrooms didn't change, same pictures since they were the Old Tony Steamers. Food was fine! Nothing great, but the prices were astronomical!! It cost $43 for two people literally a chicken breast with some lettuce / tiny salad and garlic bread and a barbecue pork plate. They up-charged extra for a mac & cheese side $2 but didn't say that on the menu. I would have much rather went to a regular restaurant for that price but hindsight is 20/20. If people are actually eating here owner is brilliant because he is making a killing on the profit margin!! Oh I miss the Old Tony's. Used to crave it and now 'Steamers' is just something convenient that isn't as bad as McDonald's. Thankfully prices are fair. Hotdogs are okay but hate the fries on top of them. I don't want all my condiments on the fries and don't get as many as before that way. I also do not want cheese all over fries to make them messy and mushy. On the side is good. Burger is nasty. Frozen patty, won't order them anymore and not worth the price. So, I've passed this place forever. Looking for a good two dog special place, this is it. But it's a sin to call that BBQ. Three thin cut pieces of meat they call brisket on a tough turano roll with Cole slaw and sauce ($16) stay far away. I've been coming here for many years. I now live in California and always made it a point to stop in whenever I'm back in town. I stopped in last week for lunch. Their special was bbq burnt ends so I thought I'd give it a try even though it was $16. The meat was grizzly and soaked in a nasty sauce covered with cole slaw. After he had enough of my honest opinion regarding this food he started walking away and said "I think you should leave" I said "are you serious is this how you treat your customers" and happily said yes while still walking away and after I tried to continue to see why he was so hostile and why so dismissive he continued to say "you should leave" even stated I should go before "it got bad" then shortly after threatened me with calling the police, not once had I raised my voice or had any malicious intent behind me, only time I raised my voice was once I was walking out the door I spoke up and said "have a good day" Let that sink in: I came in respectfully, as a paying customer, just to speak about a bad experience -- and he threatened me with the police instead of owning up to anything. Not a single staff member stepped in. No apology, no accountability, no professionalism. I feel sorry for what Tony's once-loved restaurant has turned into. I used to stop here. I'm way home from getting chemo at CDH. I love roasted chicken dinners and our favorite place. No longer uses Grubhub but this place does. So we ordered a four piece dinner tonight. The chicken was good and it was a thigh, a breast, a wing and a drumstick. We got a small piece of roll and a small cup of coleslaw and a wedge of potato and they don't sell potatoes or rolls or coleslaw as a side. I called to complain, the owner or manager I spoke with explained that they had bought the business about two months ago, and they hadn't changed the menu and I guess he didn't think there was anything wrong with it. I will never order from here again until I am assured they have a new menu but just giving everyone a heads up when you order the roasted chicken dinner. read more

Stopped by to try out this place, so I started with a jumbo hot dog everything on it. The jumbo hot dog was close to 6 bucks and it came with fries. The pickle was soggy and it also had cucumbers with celery salt. The dog had a different taste from what you would eat at Portillos or a hot dog joint. Not sure I can't describe the taste. It was pretty empty when I was there and it seems like a family restaurant although the have beer on draft and pitchers for 12.00 bucks ain't bad. They have a fish tank by where you order your food and the supports are two dirty cylinder blocks. I recommend removing them blocks because it makes the restaurant look dirty. read more

My last review for this restaurant was not as positive as I would have liked it to be. So I thought I would give them another chance by visiting several times and basing my updated review on that experience. I last reviewed in August and I have visited about 4-5 times since. Keep in mind I have been a patron for about 20 years. They have been in business since 1981. Today I ordered the Gyro Plate, (they actually upsold me from my original request of just the sandwich, I like that!) much to my surprise it was as it had been in their great past days of Gyro making! Well stocked with plenty of meat and toppings. The meat was fresh, moist, tender and tasty! The plate comes with a nice portion of Greek olives, feta cheese cubes and fries. I do have to mention that my fries were not hot. This is a reoccurring issue. But all together it was yummy! Service was fast, friendly, professional and COVID safe. I still don't like ordering and waiting outside however. And the guidelines currently in place do not mandate this practice. So loosen up folks! I am wondering if this joint is trying to confuse people with STEAMBOAT BBQ in Wheaton, IL. STEAMBOAT BBQ has excellent BBQ while STEAMERS does NOT. Here are some facts: 1. When I walked into STEAMERS, the place was dead. That should have been my first clue that STEAMERS is not popular. 2. STEAMERS only offers one flavor of BBQ sauce. That's just plain arrogance to think that people will all have the same taste buds. All of the BBQ places I know offer several types of BBQ sauces to cater to the individual person's taste buds. 3. Most BBQ joints offer potato salad, but NOT STEAMERS. 4. They place the cole slaw on the sandwich, not separately in a container. YUCK! I had to scrape it off. 5. STEAMERS menu states that the brisket sandwich is served on Texas Toast; Texas Toast is bread that is about 1 in. thick. I was served the brisket sandwich on a French roll. 6. New owners Sophia and Saul (maybe others) have SO upgraded the interior and the menu! It is fantastic, flavorful, friendly and quick. Our whole family goes there now about once a week. And their soups! Homemade, not from a can, are thick and full, FULL of flavor. Pork, brisket, thick juicy hamburgers, hot dogs. No pretense, just good food in a comfortable space. Was with my partner and her brother doing a trip down memory lane in their home town. They used to go to Tony's on their lunch break back in high school. Let's get down to it: Hot dog-excellent! Streamed Vienna beef dog on a soft poppy seed bun. Corn dog - I think this was a State Fair Hot brand hot dog-it came in a branded sleeve. It was fine. Wow have they changed. And honestly not in a good way. Tony Steamers was a staple in my family from back when I was a kid in Winfield in Action. That is no longer the case. The atmosphere is about the only thing that I like. But the crowd has changed, the food definitely does not taste the same and prices are sky high compared to Tony Steamers. The food does not taste great. It's sub par compared to what Tonys had. Not even sure they are helping support Winfield in Action as they took down all the pictures of the teams. After today, I won't be back. They have turned into a mainstream restaurant instead of a hangout spot. Extremely disappointing. I wish Steamers well! read more

Tony retired after 37 years in the Winfield location and SOLD "Tony's Steamers" around June 2024. Out of respect for Tony Vassil, I would like to see "Tony's" removed from the name/sign. Let the new owner make a name (and reviews) for himself. I want "Tony's Steamers" to retain the high reviews, and let the new guy earn 4.7 stars. I have been going to 'Steamers for many, many years and especially loved the Vienna beef hot dogs, the hamburgers and the fixins. I will miss seeing Tony and his sister.
