You can't go wrong with a burger and shake. They have a new kiosk concept like McDonald's. You order at the kiosk and then they call out your number to get your food. They have QR codes receipts that you scan in order to fill your soda. I'm not sure if you actually need to scan your QR code because it looked like people were able to fill without scanning anything. I would say you should keep your ears perked when they call out an order because sometimes they call out the item and not the order number so someone else might think it's their food. Overall, we loved our burgers and the shakes. Lots of seating area, for the most part clean. All the workers are busy making meals so I wouldn't count on any assistance. Machines and snotty employees ruined my wife's lunch today. steak 'n Shake had zero customer service and the bill was over $40, ridiculous.

My wife and I stopped in for dinner on a Friday night! We hope this location stays open for a long time! A sign was on the front door stating the shake machine was broken! Definitely a bummer! We haven't been to a Steak 'n Shake since they went to kiosk only ordering for dine-in/carry-out. We ordered 2 double steak burger meals. 1 with medium fries for an up-charge and 1 with onion rings for an up-charge. The meals don't come with drinks. The meals start at 4.99 each. The burgers were great and the fries and onion rings were good too! Our order took a little while to receive but was worth the wait. The dining room was dirty and definitely needed cleaned! We took our order to go. We will come back when we crave a steak burger. Next time we hope to get shakes too! read more

Stopped for a late lunch at 1p today - hoping that the newly reopened S&S had improved. Easy to see why the restaurant is in trouble! Ordered a simple cheese burger with bacon and a soda trying drive through. The cheese burger was almost cold aided by a large slice of cold tomato. Fries were partially cooked, unsalted mushy cool at best. They did a fine job with the diet soda. S&S fries used to be the high light of the meal now poorly prepared and unsalted. And we quickly realized why we'd noticed so few cars parked around a restaurant that once had lines of folks waiting - Steak 'n Shake has gone "fast food." *You order at a kiosk. *There are NO servers. *Your number is called and well, you get it yourself. And, after receiving your order, should you need anything further, you get up and go to the counter. Well, Steak 'n Shake, this so completely and totally sucks, and I won't return. I'm done. One of America's iconic restaurants! What's really curious is you guys gave up on one of your biggest draws; that old-school diner-style atmosphere! We saw the dinning room open sign and decided to have lunch at Steak n Shake in Morton. As we entered we saw a new setup where in the past you were greeted by someone at the counter, now you are greeted by a kiosk. To place and pay for your order you need to use the kiosk, and they do not except cash. I ordered the classic double burger and onion rings. My guest ordered a Frisco Melt with cheese fries and a side order of chili. The guest also ordered a milk shake and was happy to see that they again include a cherry on top. All items were fantastic. Avoid the Morton, IL location. Something has changed. Had a really bad experience here today. I ordered food in the drive-thru, got the wrong order, and asked them to correct it. Without a word, they took it back, made a new one, and shocked everyone in the car when they pretty much threw it out the window to us. I called to speak to the manager, got put on hold, and disconnected. I called back to share the experience with the manager, after which she lectured me for calling back and hung up again when I asked her name. Long story short, the people who work here hate everything and everyone, and the food tasted really off. Not typical for this type of restaurant. Steak n Shake is the typical corporate run food spot that's often understaffed but i still maintain it is one of the best budget restaurant chains. Sure the staff can be slow and get orders wrong like fast food places do. But knowing what to order can make things a lot better. I have never gone wrong ordering the Frisco Melt, Jalapeno Crunch Burger, or Royal Burger. Frisco Melt is tempting a heart attack but worth it. The Jalapeno Crunch is a cheesy heat bursting with flavor. The Royal is a full on burger with an egg - sounds weird but cow and chicken make a very tasty deal. Speaking of deal, with the frequent coupons available in the mail and online, these three can be had with fries for $3.99-$4.50. Go during happy hour and get a shake for like $1.70 - that's a solid meal. My favorite are the Winter Seasonal Shakes (White Chocolate and Peppermint) and the Cookie Dough and Mint Oreo & Cream. Steak n Shake provides a great menu with many American sugar/fat/salt classics, shakes, and burgers 24/7/364 (not Christmas) under $5.00 at over 500 locations nationwide. I don't know any other restaurant with that claim. My only issues with Steak n shake besides the already mentioned staff shortages and sometimes questionable orders would be that the french fries are not quality as are the burger buns. I'd really like a wheat free bun and a milk-free milkshake (coconut milk please). I should add this is all my own unbiased opinion - no Steak n Shake employees in my family or anything like that. I'm just seeing a lot of negatives on the reviews. I relate with many of those negative reviews but there's still plenty of good reasons to overlook them. read more

Much improved with the new business model. I used to not enjoy this Steak n' Shake location and consistently used to say how I wish they had a business model like Culver's or Freddie's. Now they do. You simply order at a kiosk, have access to a fountain machine for refills, fresh food ready at the counter at the call of your number. If you're the type of person who wants to be waited on hand and foot for a $4 burger and complain about not being served, then I'd suggest you try Applebees. I'm only leaving four stars because the menu is much smaller and some of my favorite items are no longer available. Great improvement to this establishment. read more

Morton, Illinois location - Horrible service! Manager needs serious re-training. I wish zero stars was an option. Not a single customer vehicle in the parking lot at 5 PM on a Wednesday. No one in line to order at the drive-thru. I pulled up and heard, if you want to order food it will take at least 20 minutes. I questioned it since there was no one waiting to order and the dining room was completely empty. I almost didn't stop at this location because I tried it a month ago and it took 22 minutes to get food AFTER I had already paid. I figured I would give them a 2nd chance; that was my mistake. I said "that's ridiculous; there isn't even anyone here". 'Manager' went off about how I shouldn't come at dinner hour and they had lots of online orders. "Don't tell me MY restaurant isn't busy! Leave now! You're trespassing!" I pulled on around the building and slowed to try to see the contact info that is usually on the window, but I couldn't see it. As I went on around the 'manager' ran out the front door recording with her cell phone and yelling. I pulled on around the building to park and take a picture of this person from my car and through the window so she could be identified. She noticed and came running out again to take more pictures. AVOID THIS LOCATION AT ALL COSTS! By the way, I was there less than 3 minutes. I drove to another Steak n Shake in Peoria, went through the drive-thru, and had my food in less than the 20 minutes they said it would take just to get food in Morton. And the fries were hot, and both the person who took the order and the one who handed it to me were pleasant and friendly. I RECOMMEND if you need a Steak n Shake fix go to the location near Walmart on University Street in Peoria. read more

Beware of this place. I went through the drive thru and ordered 4 large drinks. When I got to the window, after paying, one of the male workers started to hand me one of the drinks. I asked if it would be ok to get a drink carrier for them and asked if he could put 2 in one carrier and the other 2 in a separate carrier. Normally each carrier holds a total of 4 drinks, however, the large drinks are so tall and heavy that it will cause the carrier to break if not supporting the bottom. The worker explains to me the drinks are too tall to fit in their carriers, yet I explain to him I come here quite often and they always put 2 large drinks in a carrier. Well he storms off because I asked this simple request. Next I hear a woman, who turns out to be the night manager ask him "what's wrong". She then proceeds to the windows and and greets me asking what is wrong. I go to explain exactly what I had told the male worker and she replies the same response about the drinks being too heavy for the carriers. I explained to her that if they put 2 in a carrier that it works just fine and then told her that I come here a few times a week and that's how they have always done it for me in the past. Apparently this made her mad as well because she grabs another male worker to help her start putting the drinks in a carrier. However, I see that she is putting all 4 large drinks in a carrier when I have already kindly explained that putting just 2 in the carrier will not cause an issue. So I pull open the window to get her attention, to let her known not 4 drinks but to place only 2 in there and she goes OFF!!! She starts yelling at me saying " DON'T OPEN MY FUCKING WINDOW"!! and she yells this several times and then shouts she is canceling my order and giving a refund. So I see her go to the register and I hear her ask the male worker if I paid cash or with a card. She then starts, I assume giving me my refund and walks away from the register not giving me proof that a refund was issued. I wait for 5 more minutes in the drive-thru and she comes back telling me I need to leave or she is calling the police. I ask for my refund and she says she already processed it without ever showing me a receipt. I ask for her name, because she wasn't wearing a name tag, and she says "I don't owe you my name tag"! Just horrible horrible service and a perfect example of a Karen if I saw one. She was wearing a black button up shirt, she is a bit heavy set and wearing glasses. This happened Dec 29th around 8:30 a 9:00PM. This Stake n Snake apparently is not corporate owned so not sure how much this will help but I hope no one else runs into this lady and hopefully she will be shown the door soon. read more

We dined in for Father's day. We were seated at a just thoroughly cleaned table quickly. We had a party of five. We were treated by our friendly waiter and given our menus. Shortly, he came back and got our drink orders. After a reasonable wait we placed our orders. The drinks came back quickly, and was soon followed by our food orders. The food was the best I have had at a Steak n Shake in a while. Hot and crispy food, full of flavor. My milk shake was wonderful with what seemed to be extra chocolate, creamy whipped cream and the cherry on top. It is so nice getting the milk shakes in the glass parfait. Seems like old times. It was a good experience in a very clean store with friendly courteous staff. Seems like the people in Morton give a little extra in what they do which makes it worth the drive there. Last time I went there we were seated and given menus...and sat...and sat...and sat. I saw someone come to the takeout counter, order, get their food and leave while we sat and waited for someone to come take our order. They also have hand dipped shakes that are light years better then anything you'll get at a fast food restaurant. As for the Morton location... We eat there fairly regularly and service is generally good but when you have teen age waiters and waitresses you get your bad visits from time to time. read more
