Went to get a shake yesterday, and it had a burnt chemically smell. It tasted awful like it was burnt and had some kind of chemicals in it. Almost like the machine was burning and putting out fumes. Terrible service and unhealthy employees.... After ordering from here and going to the restaurant. The employee that made our milkshakes stirred it with his bare hands and touched the cherry with his bare hands as well. Not to mention forgot my son's food and then refused to refund me. It was 11:30 at night and I was told the store was closing, online says 1am. Make that make sense. I then had to drive around and spend even more money on food because this establishment can't do their due diligence. Update: Jan. 1, 2021: Came here with my husband and 3 kids for lunch. I'll keep this blunt and to the point. We were seated at a dirty table. Someone promptly came to clean it though. Our server got everything wrong - probably because he wrote it on his HAND instead of paper. Ordered 4 milkshakes. Got 3. Never got the 4th. My husband burger order never got turned in at all, so our food was cold by the time his came out. My daughter didn't get cheese on her CHEESEBURGER. When asked about it, instead of bringing her a fresh cheeseburger, he brought out a cold slice of cheese on a saucer. My husband and I both asked for the regular Steak & Shake seasoning on my fries, and I specifically asked to make sure it was the regular, NOT the Cajun because it's too hot and burns my lips. He brought fries covered in Cajun seasoning anyway. When we told him it was wrong, he brought us a small condiment cup of the correct seasoning - what are we supposed to do with that? Put it on top of the Cajun kind we specifically said we didn't want? I had to ask twice for new fries before he finally reluctantly brought them. My husband never got the correct fries. My daughter asked for chocolate milk. He brought her a milkshake. At some point during our visit, he just left and went walking into Walmart parking lot. I had to go to the counter to get refills for three of us, at which point I asked to cancel the milkshake that we never got. When we got our ticket, the milkshake was still on there. Seriously. We use to love Steak n Shake. But the last several times we've visited have been disappointing. This will be our last time. The place is generally unclean. But the biggest issue is the fact that servers wear their hair literally hanging in their eyes (several of them). And we actually saw a worker digging in his nose. Last time I've been to one of these was during my childhood in my hometown. This one surpassed my nostalgia I had for it. I used to only get milkshakes as a kid, but the food was amazing too. My husband and I brought a group of teens and kids to eat after a movie. Group of 11. They were excited to be at Steak 'n Shake. It's a family favorite. We sat for 15+ minutes without being greeted or given a menu. One of our guys got us menus since we are regulars. Then we sat and picked our orders and waited. We watched 3 other smaller groups come in one with 5 people, one with an older couple, and 2 or 3 guys in work clothes be served and get their food after we arrived. We got up and left. From the parking lot we watched a girl immediately serve the family that sat in our booth as we left. The restaurant food smelled great. The tables were clean. That's what 2 stars are for. I give a zero to service and managment. I've worked in good service years ago. I think this is a fair score. We were clean, dressed nice, not overly loud, we were not rude to anyone upon entering or while waiting, and are also a diverse group. Not sure why we were treated badly. Went to the drive-thru with my wife. We have not been to a Steak n' Shake for years and were looking forward to it. The fries were cold and greasy, the burgers had NO similarity to what appeared on the screen and were cold. I've had quite a few good dining experiences here, the 4 dollar burger menu is such a great business move for these guys that it keeps drawing me back again and again. Thus far I've tried quite a few of the burgers on the 4 dollar menu and even one of their great chili dogs. Good burgers, and a healthy pile of fries for a good price. I always leave full but not overly stuffed. The Garlic Burger, the Bacon Cheese and the Royal something or other are all really tasty and juicy burgers. But breakfast is where they really earn my money!! I am hooked on that Country Skillet. The whole thing is beyond delicious, is comparable to skillets at places like Denny's and IHOP, but are MUCH more reasonably priced. Steak and Shake has become a favorite local hangout.
