We had never eaten at a Steak & Shake and now I can say we probably will never go back. I should have taken the sign that no one was at the restaurant. But, my husband wanted to try it out. Nothing that we had was good. He ordered garlic burgers and onion rings. He ate a few bites of everything and couldn't stand them. My burger was ok and my Oreo shake was ok. Nothing special! I selected this Steak & Shake so we could have lunch near the center of the Total Eclipse and timed it so we could watch the Eclipse right after we ate! The plan worked exactly as planned! I had purchased a Groupon for Steak & Shake a $20 value for $10 that we were able to use as well. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the parking lot as well as the restaurant were not too crowded; we had stop and go traffic most of the last 30 miles to get there because of all of the interest in the Eclipse and I wasn't sure what to expect. We entered and were seated immediately. Steak & Shake is not known for health food but my wife decided to order a Grilled Chicken Salad with Honey Mustard Dressing that turned out to be very good. I stayed traditional and ordered a Double Avocado Burger that came with Thin Crispy Fries that was quite satisfying. Service was also attentive and efficient as well as friendly and helpful in answering questions we had about the menu. We also had Iced Tea and Diet Coke with our meal and then a Strawberry Shake to go for watching the Eclipse from the parking lot. I love when a plan comes together! read more

I've loved Steak 'n Shake since I was a kid. This location reminded me of a prison movie - as soon as we walked in the door a gruff voice told us "you have to order at the kiosk". I dont think we have to take orders from anyone, but entered our order anyway. Floor was dirty, no one in dining room and most of the lights were off, so we ate outside in the car. The food was ok, and no complaints beyond these. Unfriendly, rude, unkempt restaurant. No wonder there were no other diners at the noon hour. Standard Steak 'n Shake experience. I got the Frisco Melt. Whoever made it put American Cheese on it. That made it 90% less enjoyable. I got seasoning on my fries. Some fries had a lot of seasoning and others hardly had any. The server was great. She was very friendly and attentive. I think her name was Brianna. This ties in to the last issue I had. I went to the register to pay. Some older lady was running the register. I swipe my card. I assume the the screen would offer me an option to enter a tip. Nope. I thought maybe I could write in a tip on the receipt. Nope. I said something to the lady. She said that it had to be entered before paying. Instead of admitting she didn't ask if I'd like to include a tip....she tried to word it as if it was my fault! Luckily, wife happen to have cash in the car. I went out to get it and bring it back. I haven't been in here for over 2 years and left in a huff the last time because after 30 minutes we hadn't had anyone come by to take our requests or even give us a glass of water. I'm giving them a shot today because my grandniece loves Steak & Shake. 3 minutes to get seated is reasonable, they're busy (not so on my last visit). 5 more minutes for someone to take out requests, okay, they're busy. 5 minutes later our water arrived. At 35 minutes in the door we get our food, tasty, but only warm, no milkshakes yet. 47 minutes our milkshakes arrive after seeing them come out the window 5 minutes ago. The staff is friendly and courteous even though the service over is horrible ! If I could give this store negative stars I would. Traveling to MN from TN and had a craving for a shake. Decided to get the number 10 with cheese to split between me and my husband. Made it a meal plus requested the free fries. Got our order, both orders of fries were stone cold. Triple cheeseburger was missing the cheese and our peanut butter cup shake ONLY had crumbled pieces of candy on the whipped cream....the rest of the shake was plain vanilla with nothing mixed in. Did not even warrant one star. From the moment we entered it was horrible. The cook was yelling obscenities at the grill at other staff the place was dirty, they had one waitress there who was in my opinion too old to be handling this much of a crowd. Food was slow and when it did come some was either missing or not done properly. And not once did we see a manager in this place to stop the cursing from the staff. I had kids with me and did not want them to hear all that. I wont ever return to this place again unless they get better service and managers at this store. I am calling the corporate offices as well to notify them of the unclean and unprofessional working and dining environment. The first time I have eaten at this steak n shake since 12/20. I have got to say the atmosphere has changed. They no longer have server's just a self service kiosk. Employees were friendly and the triple burger and fries were to die for. With COVID we lost so much, our poor restaurant's and employees have been replaced by machines. On my trip to the midwest, trying Shake n Shake was top on my list. Only cus Marc Summers claims it "best burger" he's ever eaten, in an episode of "best thing i've ever eaten" on food network. So my perception of this place was wrong, I thought it more like Red Robin, or Applebees, but actually its part restaurant/ diner (ala johnny rockets), and part drive thru. Naturally, prices are cheaper than Red robin, or applebees, and that's fine with me. It was packed on a Tuesday night, so it says something right? I tried the wisconsin butter melt- this butter-soaked buns, topped with carmelized grilled onions, double patties, cheddar (what else), all to make sure you clog your arteries and get fat, like those wisconsin residents. LOL. The buns could not have used the butter, and the burger would have been awesome. instead, it felt too greasy and soggy. Patties are thin, not my favourite (i love thick patties, having been spoilt by Father's Office's "best burger ever", Islands, and The Counter;s burgers, in CA), Also, i keep comparing Steak'n shake to In -n-Out. For variety, Steak wins. Freshness, value and flavor, slight bias for In-N-Out. But they are pretty close. And any place than can fill the in n out burger void in me, I likey. I also tried their fries- Shoestring style, their Onion Rings, Both good, But here is where my solid 4 stars gets cemented: Their shakes! I tried the cookies n Cream, and Double fudge chocolate. The Steak 'n Shake in Marion IL has had poor service the last two times my husband and I have been there. The first time we didn't receive napkins/silverware and one of our side orders. We decided to give it a second try, well the service was worse! No silverware or napkins, I had to go wait at the counter to get them, my husband ordered a milkshake and he never did get it until we asked for it when we paid. We don't frequent Steak n Shakes but after 5 hours in the car we wanted that sit down / fast food mix. The Steak n Shakes in the Chicago are are very slow to respond...getting a table getting service, getting food. Not this one!!! I walked in, the waitress seated me right away, asked if I wanted something to drink while I waited for the rest of my party which was walking in the door which then she got all of our drinks. In only a few minutes, we got our drinks and Latricia was taking our order. Very friendly service. We were only waiting about 10 + minutes then the food came with a drink refil. Normally at a Steak n Shake you'll wait 20 - 30 minutes, which is why we don't frequent. Awesome service for this place. The lady waiting on us is really nice but everything else is horrible. 15 minute to be seated and the guy with the tie( i really hope he's not the manager ) just ignored us. It's been almost 30 minutes now and no food. Having an open kitchen you can watch the circus and it's not amusing. A district manager needs to get in here quick. Went in there with a lot of people, as we were on a trip to Florida and our four buses stopped by the restaurant area. So I'll give them a little slack for it being busy. some of the wait staff looked less than pleased, and I understand that they were stressed. BUT i felt like they could've been a little nicer and make customer service a priority. When we ordered, many people in my group (about 6 people at the table) just ordered milkshakes or milkshakes and a burger. We told them up front that we were in a rush, and would like our orders out in about 40 minutes, which they were happy to oblige. But, it was 5 minutes until we had to leave and my swirl milkshake, as well as everyone else's order had not been delivered. Have breakfast here most weeks with my grandma. The scrambled eggs are more like an omelet, as they're scrambled in a bowl but untouched on griddle, so they're whole. Bacon is usually crispy. Biscuits are good and gravy was good but lately tastes like a mix. Hash browns are good--true diner hash browns. Pancakes are also good. Burgers are tasty but greasy. This doesn't even deserves a star, I was here Sunday night arrived around 11:10 there was a total of 8 people dining there(4 different groups of 2) all(White) had their food or finished and conversating with each other when I arrived I stood at the waiting line for well over 10 mins when it was slow the waitress by the name of "Breanna H." who saw me walk in and didn't even greet me eventually approached me and asked if I wanted to sit in a booth, I told her that was fine so she brought me to a booth that was secluded away from the other customers, I then saw two more people walking in a younger white couple, who didn't wait long as Breanna was the one to approach them and quickly greeted them and actually sat them in a booth closer to the rest of the customers, I was the only black male there and I was still very respectful regardless of the terrible service I received, at the end as I was trying to pay for my meal I believe a supervisor was trying to ask me how was the service, I just shook my head and told her I wasn't pleased so she put me on the spot where everyone could hear and I didn't feel comfortable discussing my experience so she asked a fellow worker of hers a gentleman and told him I wasn't satisfied with my experience, at that point I told them I just want to pay for my food so I can go and asked for my receipt back so I can remember the name of the waitress, I pay very close attention to detail and I would not recommend going here especially if you are a person of color, not making it about race but take it for what it is and this was my experience. read more
